Pop's Sunset Grill was absolutely amazing! We went to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday and had the best experience from start to finish. We were seated right by the pier with a stunning view, which set the tone for a perfect evening. We started with piña coladas, and they were a solid 5/5--perfectly balanced with just the right amount of rum and not overly sweet. Our waiter recommended the shrimp rangoons, and wow... easily some of the best shrimp I've ever had. They were incredibly fresh and savory, and the combination of the sauce with the cream cheese was unique and delicious. For dinner, we ordered the Marker 10 tacos and the fresh catch of the day, which was grouper. The tacos were made with mahi mahi, which I asked to have blackened, and they were packed with flavor. I chose onion rings as my side. While for the price I do think an extra taco would've been nice, the freshness and quality of the fish definitely made up for it. The sauce on the tacos was spectacular--seriously so good. The grouper was the true star of the night. It was unbelievably fresh, full of flavor, and literally melted in your mouth. The coconut rice was rich and flavorful, and the vegetables were perfectly savory. We ordered a LandShark but received a Corona instead, but honestly, no complaints--we still enjoyed the beer! Very fun place. Food was okay - I had the chicken breast sandwich with sweet potato (those were delish) - it was blackened but the sauce was sweet on top so a little bit of a conflict of flavors. A Tiki Bar. This is the second time I've driven 140 miles round-trip for brunch. There were six of us, and we scored a table by the river. For weekend brunch, they have two different kitchens. One does breakfast, then the other does lunch. My order came from the lunch side. I ordered a Swiss cheese burger with fries. Mrs. K ordered "The Joe" 2 over-hard eggs, American cheese, bacon, and mayo on toasted sourdough. For whatever reason, I wanted oysters. So I ordered six, and they tasted wonderful. I was totally surprised to find this huge restaurant and gift shop tucked behind a marina in the tiny town of Nokomis. I was also totally surprised to find that the food has a high-end chef finish. My hot honey chicken was cooked to juicy perfection and the flavors were delicately balanced. My friend got the avocado toast which looked artfully arranged with lots of deluxe toppings. The prices were reasonable for the generous portions. We sat under a tiki woven grass roof overlooking the intercostal on a warm day and it was so pleasant. Our table has a built in fireplace in the middle of it, so I'm sure it's nice and cozy on a cool evening. The live music was a nice touch. When we first arrived at pops, we requested a table by the water. The wait for our table was not too long because we were entertained by their very expensive gift shop. We had to switch our table because the first one we found was in a hot ass room.. we finally got seated and ordering was a breeze. Food took around 15 minutes, which is amazing considering how packed that place was. I got the black bean quinoa burger with onions and American cheese... SO good! hell yes MUST TRY. It did fall apart, but that's a skill issue. Onion rings were tasty but I was not a fan of the sauce they came with.. ranch is better. The sweet tea was scrumptious.. only thing missing is some dessert. We looked on their website multiple times and it said there would be live music at 6. Never happened, at least where we were seated. Not happy about that. I give this place a 4/5 because the food was really yummy however, the seating, lack of live music, and small amount of room in that place has made my rating go down a little. read more

I am a local and hosted a dinner tonight with colleagues from out of town. I choose pops because it's a place we go frequently to have a drink and apps. The service tonight was terrible. I asked for water 4 times. And never got it. Food n service was slow. And when my meal came out wrong the manager corrected it but it came out after the entire table was finished eating. I will not go back. No concessions were made and we were seated by a large fan that made the dinner less than enjoyable. Very disappointing experience. He was very friendly and made conversation with us throughout our time there. We both had delicious drinks and ordered two of their salads. I had the Casey Key salad and added blackened salmon. For $28, I was worried that I'd be disappointed. The greens were fresh, there were plenty of toppings, and the blackened salmon was moist and flavorful. I left comfortably full. Asked for onion and pickles, which arrived 10 minutes later, which meant my sandwich cooled considerably. Also received some French fries. Imagine my reaction when the bill showed $32 for a skimpy sandwich to which the waiter simply said I don't set the prices. We stopped at Pop's with some friends for lunch. Most seating is covered outdoors with nice water views. Known for their seafood, that is exactly what we ordered. When in Florida I cannot get enough grouper. My grouper sandwich ordered blackened and was perfectly cooked. My wife also ordered grouper grilled. We both loved our lunches. In our month's stay, we probably had grouper another dozen times either for lunch as a sandwich or as a dinner as we ended up on the Atlantic side of Florida. Can't get enough of this wonderful fish. Went back to Pop's after a two-yr absence. I have to admit I was very very disappointed. It seems that Joe the owner has taken on investors or has sold part of the business and I have to say, not impressed with the Food or the management. The wife and I ate there twice while on vacation and was so disappointed. First meal Mango shrimp. Pretty bad when the shrimp are supposed to be grilled but came out boiled? Sorry to say the rice tasted better than the shrimp. All drinks are now measured. They seem to have lost that down home atmosphere. What used to be an eight-dollar drink is now 12 and tasted pretty watered down. Talking about POP's Punch. Breakfast another day was even worse. Had to send the wife's food back, because poached eggs were overcooked? How do you over cook poached eggs? You don't pay attention that's how. That don't count on the food being cold both times. Very sad to see this. Now let's talk about management on a Veterans discount. Our waitress was asked if we were a local couple, in order to get a veteran's discount. What the hell, Joe, when did you start asking if we were local vets or not in order to get a 10% discount. You know manager I am talking about too. As for the atmosphere in the place. Joe, you lost it when you took on investors and changed the atmosphere in the place. Good luck to ya, but I will not be back. Just another tourist trap. read more

Still thinking about the casey key salad and blackened salmon days later. The blackened salmon bites were so delicious I could have eaten a hundred. The salad was one of the best salads I've ever had, it was so flavorful and refreshing.I regret not getting the blackened salmon on it. The buffalo shrimp weren't my favorite. To me they had a bit of a parmesan taste which threw me off but they were still good. Definitely coming back next time I visit. read more
