Look can be deceiving! This is my go to for barbecue and I'm in the restaurant business.Barbecue sandwich, Keylime cake and sweet tea. If you're in the area this place is a must.

Easily the worst BBQ I have had in a long time. I passed up a BBQ joint in Wrens to come here because of the better reviews on Yelp. Grocery stores have better BBQ than this. The BBQ: The BBQ is chunks not pulled and has no smoke flavor. There was lots of fat & gristly parts on the meat. Although the meat had the mild sauce on it, the overwhelming flavor was unseasoned, unsmoked pork. Not a good thing. The Hash: Pretty much tastes like opening a can of stewed tomatoes. The Baked Beans: The baked beans are canned not homemade. The Slaw: The Slaw was course chopped, sweet, but has a relish kick too. It was OK but not how I like my slaw. The Service: About like going to McDonald's. Nobody acted happy to be there. Don't expect a smile. I was hoping for some good BBQ but left disappointed. I hate spending money on bad food. Don't expect me to come back. Foodies keep looking.

Chopped pork was moist & flavorful-Rib tips were amazing. Will definitely stop again on our next trip to Augusta. Definitely a well-kept local secret. Worth the drive from Augusta...hole in the wall that I might have had second thoughts about had I not read the other reviews. Family run business that knows BBQ....try it - you won't be disappointed..

Any questions about this being "TRUE" BBQ?

to cook (food) on a barbecue : to broil or roast (meat, fish, etc.) over hot coals or an open fire...this is the definition of BBQ according to Mirriam-Webster. I have spent the last 4 years as a KCBS Certified BBQ Judge. Traveling to different states to judge competition BBQ is a treat and an honor. Finding BBQ in the Augusta area has had its challenges and its rewards. But traveling outside of Augusta, in this case a trip to Thompson led me to Poppa's Finest BBQ & Catering. Everybody takes pictures of the plates of food they are planning to review...I on the other hand submitted a picture of the devastation that was created by my wife and I at lunch. I ordered the small (I use the term loosely) BBQ (the term in these parts for pulled/chopped pork), the rib sandwich and the chicken sandwich. For those of you not familiar with the concept of "sandwich" in a true BBQ place its the meat and two slices of WHITE bread...and, of course, a bottle of sauce and a roll of paper towels. In my case it was chopped pork on a white hamburger bun..and I should have stopped right there. Buy, the three ribs and the 2 pieces of white bread could not be passed up. Next came the chicken. For me this means dark meat (in this case a leg/thigh)...it is what is always presented in competition in the chicken category because of its moistness. I can only speak from my experience on this day, but, hands down, this is the best BBQ outside of competition that I have had in the 2 years living in Georgia and eating at EVERY BBQ place that I have been told to go to. As far as the comment about "smoke" not on the food, I ask you to look at the picture I have posted from sneaking around the back of the building when I left to talk to the pitmasters. I did not take a picture but they had 20 whole hams skewered over the open pit for a catering job. They were adding fresh coals from a chimney full of split oak as needed. The smell was heavenly. This is where their meats are smoked...over coals or an open fire. This is NOT the only BBQ in the area or in the Augusta area. Each BBQ place you visit has their own spin on BBQ. I have eaten at establishments with huge clienteles that that cook their meat using propane and a large oven...NO SMOKE at all. Being a competition judge I will always opt for wood smoke and fire. whether I am eating in Kansas City, the State of Texas or the Carolina's. It does not mean that I am opposed to trying others rendition of BBQ. It is what makes eating at different places fun. If it is not to my liking, I simply make a note not to return. I hope you will give Poppa's a try...it is a little bit of a drive from the Augusta area, but it is a pretty drive out in the country and folks there put out some delicious food.

Eating meat is rare for her;)

Meatiest ribs I have found since moving to this area in 2014. Juicy, tasty and just the right amount of taste from open flame and seasoning.

Went here based on other reviews, but food was so bad we didn't finish it. Wasted $30 dinner and left and went to Subway.

Kent's Drive-Inn -- Thomson's Best Since 1963…read more In the heart of Thomson, Georgia, there's a vibe you just can't fake ...the kind that makes you slow down, cut the engine, and take it all in. Fried catfish, sizzling chicken, country fried steak, and a banana split that could end a government shutdown. We're talkin' Kent's Drive-Inn and if you know, you know. Four generations deep, this isn't just a restaurant. it's a legacy. The kind built on soft gravel, hard work, and good food. The moment you pull in, you're part of the story. But first! you've got to pass the test. The Door of Resistance You don't just walk into Kent's. Oh no. You've got to earn it. That front door? It's the final boss of local dining. Doesn't care who your daddy is, how much you squat, or if you're wearing slip-resistant shoes. No man has ever strutted through that door on a first date and impressed anyone. It's humbling but once you're in, it's heaven on the other side. Alright, now let's talk food. The Buffalo Chicken Fingers You think you've had chicken fingers? Not like these. These beauties are drenched, not drowned, in the perfect buffalo sauce. Just enough heat to wake you up, balanced with that buttery kick that keeps you chasing the flavor. And underneath that sauce? Real-deal chicken. Juicy. Tender. Fried to golden perfection. The crinkle fries? Normally not my go-to until Kent's honey mustard hit the table. That dip could . Tangy, creamy, and just mysterious enough to keep you coming back for "one last fry" about fifteen times. The Club Sandwich Pure comfort perfection. Three layers of toasted white bread crisp on the edges, soft in the middle. Ham, turkey, crispy bacon, lettuce, and even tomato and mayo if that's your thing. Either way it's a solid selection. And Halfway through, you'll find yourself leaning back in silence, nodding in approval. Pro tip: Watch that toothpick on your victory bite this sandwich doesn't mess around. ‍ The Crew Kent's isn't just good food it's good people. The front crew moves like a well-oiled machine, years of experience and quick wit. They are absolutely wonderful! And back in that kitchen? Some of The best chefs/Cooks/GrillMasters in McDuffie County no contest. They're not just cooking; they're creating hometown classics, one plate at a time. You can feel the pride. Every fry basket, every ice cream cone, every plate... it's built with grit, laughter, and just enough strength to keep spirits up and stomachs full in Thomson. The Verdict Kent's isn't a restaurant you go to once. It's the place you grow up with. It's where first dates happened, high school games ended, and memories get made. In a world full of copycat menus and fast-food chains, Kent's stands tall. It's authentic, unapologetic, and absolutely lights-out fantastic. You won't be disappointed. KENTS DEFINITELY DESERVES A PERFECT 10/10! Excellent!

From the moment you walk in, you feel at home. The decor isn't just "there"; it's curated. With every turn of the head, you find yourself captivated by something more interesting than the last. It creates a cozy, intentional environment that sets the stage for the service. The Service: Shannon is a absolute delight and as genuine as they come. She has that "Momma's about to feed you, sit down and tell me what you need" energy, and it works perfectly. Watching her work is a sight to behold she handles three or four things at once with a grace most of us lack while just walking and breathing. You may enter empty, but you certainly won't leave that way. The Food: Have you ever liked one thing so much you haven't even made it to the rest of the menu? That's me. Their bacon, egg, and cheese would give any breakfast spot in Georgia a run for its money. I swear every time I walk in that I'll try something new, but the "usual" is just too good to resist. It's a difficult choice I look forward to making every time. Why they get a 10/10: My ratings of just about everything in life are based on three pillars that Camellia Cafe nails: 1. Kindness: They treat everyone with respect the moment they walk through the door, regardless of how they look or what's in their wallet. 2. Values: It's clear that while money is a reality of business, it isn't the only thing driving them. There is heart here. 3. Consistency of Character: You can tell the kindness isn't a "performance" for customers it's a reflection of how they treat their staff, their family, and themselves. Great Character combined with respect is what works here. I'll be back because of that and i guarantee that anyone else who takes the time to go in and dine. Yeh, they will definitely be back too.
