This man is awesome, and so is his team. I purchased an apartment that had a front door that had CLEARLY lived through rougher times in uptown ('but, like, did you die?' it seemed to taunt) and the lock was janky as ever. In the time it took for the door to be manufactured, he replaced the lock in the old door so I wouldn't have any issues in the interim (free of charge!!) and then came and installed my new door as soon as he got it in (because he knew I wanted my door as soon as possible)! I have requested an additional bolt for the new door and I have the utmost confidence he'll source me something that doesn't affect the integrity of the sash, and he's also stated that if I feel that the door needs a sweep, he'll install that no issue. It means a lot to have someone you trust in the neighborhood with your security. There's a reason he's been in business in for so many years (30, I think), AND why every single person in my building or area I've spoken to has mentioned him as their go-to for locksmith. Don't hesitate, just go to Popeye's - heart this man!! read more

Great job. If you need air conditioners installed these are the guys. They came on Monday looked at the windows and gave us a price. They showed up today to do the job. It was fast, efficient and done well. These were 20 year old units that needed replacing. Written estimate and receipt were provided. Nice guys. Very straight forward. read more

Amazing neighborhood locksmith. Submitted a quote regarding my lock not working from the inside and Popeye called me within 15 minutes. He had someone come in the following day and fixed everything. I recently had an issue with my gate/entry-exit lock. I called Popeye's locksmith for the first time and they responded immediately. I sent them pictures of the damaged lock and they came to take a look . They went to the supplier and installed it was a quick turnaround. Problem solved for a reasonable cost. Will do business again very professional and friendly and fast. read more

Responsive, knowledgeable, nice guy, great lock. In the neighborhood. What's not to like?

I made a request online for a quote and was contacted within 5 minutes. We set a time for the same day and he was at my front door within the hour. It took only about 15 minutes and my front door locks where replaced. No peddling of extras or whatever and the job got done. I really appreciated the professionalism and promptness. I highly recommend Popeye's! read more

Extremely efficient and professional locksmith! If I ever need anything again I will definitely call them first. Very responsive and helpful team! read more

Needed to get a lock on my bedroom door and sent requests out to about 5 companies plus checked with a local one around the corner. Popeye was the 2nd cheapest (no hidden service fees!), and he was also the only one who called me directly when I would message or text him questions. He was able to come install the lock within just 48 hours after I sent my initial message, and less than 24 hours after I selected him as my locksmith. Notably, he took the time to be concerned about what kind of lock would be least likely to make my landlord take my security deposit away yet would still maximize security. Really appreciated that as many of the other guys were suggesting a far more invasive deadbolt. He was in & out in 20 minutes, and I'm very happy with the result! Thanks, Popeye! read more

My front door lock has not worked properly since they installed it last year. I contacted Popeye right away and he asked me to call back on another day. I called back and he said he could come by the following week and I should call again. I called that day and no answer. Then NYC locked down and several months went by until I could safely consider having Popeye return. I called him during the summer of 2020. He said "call back on X day." I called back and again- no response. Lock is unusable. He installed a window gate and basic lock in an interior room and those are fine. His lack of follow up and the state of my front door lock is extremely disappoint read more

This place is simply the best. I got 3 keys copied, one of which was one of those hefty Mul-T-Lock keys, all for under $14. Garnet helped me and though I forgot the card for the Mul-T-Lock key, he copied it and said if it wasn't right I could come back and he'd do it again, free of charge. I've had that one copied by itself before and been charged $25. So in my opinion, this was a steal!! read more

Popeye came within 1 hour of when I contacted him and fixed my damaged lock quickly and without a problem. He was reasonably priced and even threw in a few extra copies of my new key for free, which I really appreciated! He also happens to be a genuinely friendly guy, which is a nice plus when you have a stranger come over to do work in your apt. (Also, I am generally skeptical of trusting yelp reviews but the reviews here seem to be 100% genuine and completely in line with the positive interaction I experienced with Popeye). I would definitely recommend him if you need help with your locks. read more

Always dependable and efficient. It's been a pleasure doing business with them over the years

The best since the 80's. The BEST. Just replaced my door lock. Flawless.

Popeye was incredibly fast to respond to our request for fire escape gates. No fuss with coming by to measure and super fast to install. Great guy! Highly recommend! read more

The $275 lockset change out was still faulty and although, we are at a lost as to why the continued issue, instead of returning to provide assistance as he promised when he installed the new mechanism, during our follow-up phone calls to him, he became hostile and insulting. The acquaintance who referred him were shocked at his response and attitude - they we're on the last phone call to him. read more

Popeye replaced the main door to my apartment so I could use a key-less entry system. He listened carefully up front to exactly what I was looking for, then delivered as promised. Extra points for doing so during the lockdown. I highly recommend Popeye, as he is honest, fair, and gets the job done right! read more

Popeye is apparently doing just fine without you or me, thanks very much, and is not shy about letting you know it. In late May of 2013, I paid Popeye to replace a faulty upper deadbolt mechanism on the door to my apartment. He did the work himself. I was leaving within days for a year's employment abroad; he showed me how "well" the new lock was working, which I was dubious about, and then left. It soon became apparent that the lock, though functioning, did not work well at all. It sticks, and requires all kinds of "monkeying around with" to get it to lock properly (as opposed to the previous lock, which, though it did eventually fail, always worked seamlessly until it broke). Due to my impending departure, I had no time in my schedule to have Popeye come and make it right. Fast forward to a year later, and I visit Popeye. I should add that, owing to a guest in my apartment breaking the deadlock below the one Popeye did, and having it replaced by some anonymous locksmith who did equally shoddy work, to the point of it not working at all, I approached Popeye having in mind an offer of bonus work, which I of course expected to pay for, in hopes that he would correct his faulty work gratis. "Ohhh, sorry, no, I don't do that. I get too many people comin' in here, sayin' the work is bad long after it was done..." blah. Blah. Blah. I was being straight up with this guy, and I suspect, and it will have to remain a suspicion of course, that he knew it. Just couldn't be bothered. Do yourself a favor; NYC has about as many locksmiths as it does roaches - find one that is better than this guy. read more

I had to call Popeye's. AGAIN. GOD, GET YOUR LIFE TOGETHER, JAKE. Once again, the locksmith came lickety split and opened my door in a flash and this time with a (much deserved) talk about making spare keys. Nothing but good things to say about Popeye's! read more

Don't bother with the others... give these folks a call. I have been helped out in a very big way on two separate occasions. One instance was a late night lock out... locksmith was there in a matter of fifteen minutes to fix the problem. The other was a more routine installation of a top lock. Both times, incredible service. Very outgoing, fair prices, great products installed. Give them a call, you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended. read more

It's amazing the things you don't notice until you need them. I have walked past this store on so many occasions and never knew it was there. I needed a key copied and they took care of it right away. The customer service was FANTASTIC. I was not aware they were cash only and my key came up 3.25, I had 3 dollars in cash and instead of letting me walk to the ATM, he told me don't worry about it. Sounds like a small thing but it goes a long way! If I have any issues with my keys, this is where I'm going. I highly recommend this place to anyone .... read more

I called Popeye's last week to replace the locks on my new apartment. After dealing with locksmiths downtown, I was prepared to pay an arm and a leg for so-so service. However, I was floored when Popeye gave me the price - a fraction of what I would have paid on the Upper West Side! Popeye was great! He was very professional, on-time, and made sure I knew how to use the new locks before he left. He even asked me about window bars, but since I live on the sixth floor and there are no fire escapes by my windows, I feel secure. Overall a wonderful experience and I will definitely call him again if I need any locksmith services! read more

After we had a pretty scary break in at my apartment, a member of the NYPD's forensic evidence team suggested we call Popeye for the best service and price in the city. It was comforting to get such a recommendation from someone who surely sees these situations often, and we weren't disappointed. Popeye came to our apartment in a timely manner and got right to work. While he was installing our new lock and deadbolt, he took the time to instruct my roommates and I on the mechanism and how our old knob had been stripped by our intruder, which is really above and beyond, in my opinion. It didn't take him long to get everything installed, and he was so reasonable with us price-wise for the excellent work he performed. Five stars again and again. read more

My apartment was broken into and I had newly moved into the area. (Welcome to the neighborhood, am I right?) I was very upset and distraught and Popeye assured me he would take care of it. I replaced the bottom lock and added a second deadbolt lock. He also checked my fire escape gate to make sure it was secure. He was prompt, fast, efficient. And true to his word, the prices are fair. I felt like I was in good hands. Would definitely recommend this business!! read more

Last night, I was locked out of my apt while answering the building entrance door for a Parcel delivery. Our building's intercom/buzzer has not been working for the past 3 weeks. I've always been diligent to bring my keys with during this super inconvenient time; however, last night I was in the middle of cooking dinner and ran out as soon as they called, leaving my keys in the apt with the auto-lock on the door shutting completely on me. Thank heavens I had my phone on me! Stunned and betrayed by my own bldg., I quickly did a search for "Locksmith" on Yelp, and Popeye's was the first company that popped up. I dialed, spoke with Popeye himself, texted him my cell phone # and address, and within 10 mins, his guy was on the case, used a shim to basically shimmy into my door, and the whole thing was over within 30 mins. I have never felt so much relief! And he only charged me $75 bucks, to which I added a gracious tip. I had a follow-up call with Popeye, who will provide me a receipt to present to my landlord, to whom I will be billing for this 3-week unacceptable convenience. I highly recommend these guys... They're fast, on time, and open late. 5 stars! read more

Popeye's locksmith did a fantastic job, end-to-end! They gave me a 2 hour time window and then called me before heading over so I was able to plan my day without waiting around for no reason. Their prices were also super affordable and they did a really thorough job! The lock opens and closes very smoothly, and they let me test it while they were there to make sure I was satisfied. Very professional and would definitely use again in the future. Highly recommended! read more

Call Popeye because a reliable and helpful locksmith! I had my second lock installed about a month ago. I called him in the morning and he came a couple of hours later. He finished the job in an hour. Unfortunately, the lock was broken a week later and my husband and I couldn't enter the apartment. We immediately called Popeye. Because he wasn't in the city, he sent a guy to get us in the apartment. This shows how professional and helpful Popeye is! He came two days later to fix the broken lock and it was free of charge. Thank you, Popeye! read more

I gave Popeye a call on a Saturday morning with a no-rush request to replace a lock on my apartment door. Within a half hour, a very friendly Luis showed up, replaced the lock (with four new keys), gave me a thorough consultation on other security measures that I could take, and charged me a very reasonable fee for his service. Problem solved from start to finish in under an hour. That's pretty impressive for a Saturday morning. read more

It's freezing cold, Friday night and I'm supposed to leave town in the morning my front door lock breaks. Popeye takes my frantic call, shows up to my house at 6 p.m. (within 30 minutes), calms me down and gets my door back in shape for me to leave town tomorrow on schedule. Highly recommend. Really night guy, too. Make sure you have cash...he doesn't take charge cards. read more

Popeyes came on a Sunday to install a deadbolt on my entrance door and gave me a fair price. He did a good job and took the time to explain the difference in the old vs new locks. Very professional and respectful - would hire him again for any security and lock issues. read more

Slept in this morning, and when I got up, I remembered that we were out of milk. Quickly got ready, then stepped out of my apartment and BOOM--door shuts, locks, & my keys are inside. After I tried a few other options with no luck, I called Popeye, gave him my info, and he quoted me a price and said he'd call me back with details. He called back in 2 or 3 minutes, and a locksmith was at my place in another 10. All and all it was about 20 minutes from my call to being back in my apartment on a Saturday morning. On top of that, they were upfront and fair with the price. I think that ticks all the boxes for a good locksmith. read more

Popeye's Locksmith will be taking care of all my security needs for as long as I live in Washington Heights. I decided to roll the dice with Popeye's after having some serious issues with the lock on my apartment's front door. I wanted a brand new deadbolt installed, and everything from setting up an appointment to the installation was a breeze. I've had problems with the lock on my front door since I first moved into my apartment and I have dealt with it for nearly a year and a half. Add on top of that the most incompetent of supers -- I had a real problem on my hands. The owner of Popeye's did the job himself in under 30 minutes for an incredibly reasonable rate when considering how quick, precise, and adeptly he installed the new lock and showed me how to use it. On top of that he was polite, concerned, and very help with offering me advice on security and safety. Look no further -- this place is the best. Popeye's really knows what is going on! read more
