This man is awesome, and so is his team. I purchased an apartment that had a front door that had CLEARLY lived through rougher times in uptown ('but, like, did you die?' it seemed to taunt) and the lock was janky as ever. In the time it took for the door to be manufactured, he replaced the lock in the old door so I wouldn't have any issues in the interim (free of charge!!) and then came and installed my new door as soon as he got it in (because he knew I wanted my door as soon as possible)! I have requested an additional bolt for the new door and I have the utmost confidence he'll source me something that doesn't affect the integrity of the sash, and he's also stated that if I feel that the door needs a sweep, he'll install that no issue. It means a lot to have someone you trust in the neighborhood with your security. There's a reason he's been in business in for so many years (30, I think), AND why every single person in my building or area I've spoken to has mentioned him as their go-to for locksmith. Needed to get a lock on my bedroom door and sent requests out to about 5 companies plus checked with a local one around the corner. Popeye was the 2nd cheapest (no hidden service fees!), and he was also the only one who called me directly when I would message or text him questions. He was able to come install the lock within just 48 hours after I sent my initial message, and less than 24 hours after I selected him as my locksmith. Notably, he took the time to be concerned about what kind of lock would be least likely to make my landlord take my security deposit away yet would still maximize security. My front door lock has not worked properly since they installed it last year. I contacted Popeye right away and he asked me to call back on another day. I called back and he said he could come by the following week and I should call again. I called that day and no answer. Then NYC locked down and several months went by until I could safely consider having Popeye return. I called him during the summer of 2020. He said "call back on X day." I called back and again- no response. Lock is unusable. He installed a window gate and basic lock in an interior room and those are fine. This place is simply the best. I got 3 keys copied, one of which was one of those hefty Mul-T-Lock keys, all for under $14. Garnet helped me and though I forgot the card for the Mul-T-Lock key, he copied it and said if it wasn't right I could come back and he'd do it again, free of charge. I've had that one copied by itself before and been charged $25. So in my opinion, this was a steal!! read more

He was reasonably priced and even threw in a few extra copies of my new key for free, which I really appreciated! He also happens to be a genuinely friendly guy, which is a nice plus when you have a stranger come over to do work in your apt. It's amazing the things you don't notice until you need them. I have walked past this store on so many occasions and never knew it was there. I needed a key copied and they took care of it right away. The customer service was FANTASTIC. I was not aware they were cash only and my key came up 3.25, I had 3 dollars in cash and instead of letting me walk to the ATM, he told me don't worry about it. Popeye is apparently doing just fine without you or me, thanks very much, and is not shy about letting you know it. In late May of 2013, I paid Popeye to replace a faulty upper deadbolt mechanism on the door to my apartment. He did the work himself. I was leaving within days for a year's employment abroad; he showed me how "well" the new lock was working, which I was dubious about, and then left. It soon became apparent that the lock, though functioning, did not work well at all. It sticks, and requires all kinds of "monkeying around with" to get it to lock properly (as opposed to the previous lock, which, though it did eventually fail, always worked seamlessly until it broke). Due to my impending departure, I had no time in my schedule to have Popeye come and make it right. Fast forward to a year later, and I visit Popeye. I should add that, owing to a guest in my apartment breaking the deadlock below the one Popeye did, and having it replaced by some anonymous locksmith who did equally shoddy work, to the point of it not working at all, I approached Popeye having in mind an offer of bonus work, which I of course expected to pay for, in hopes that he would correct his faulty work gratis. "Ohhh, sorry, no, I don't do that. I get too many people comin' in here, sayin' the work is bad long after it was done..." blah. Blah. Blah. I was being straight up with this guy, and I suspect, and it will have to remain a suspicion of course, that he knew it. Just couldn't be bothered. Do yourself a favor; NYC has about as many locksmiths as it does roaches - find one that is better than this guy. read more

It was comforting to get such a recommendation from someone who surely sees these situations often, and we weren't disappointed. Popeye came to our apartment in a timely manner and got right to work. Last night, I was locked out of my apt while answering the building entrance door for a Parcel delivery. Our building's intercom/buzzer has not been working for the past 3 weeks. I've always been diligent to bring my keys with during this super inconvenient time; however, last night I was in the middle of cooking dinner and ran out as soon as they called, leaving my keys in the apt with the auto-lock on the door shutting completely on me. Thank heavens I had my phone on me! Stunned and betrayed by my own bldg., I quickly did a search for "Locksmith" on Yelp, and Popeye's was the first company that popped up. I dialed, spoke with Popeye himself, texted him my cell phone # and address, and within 10 mins, his guy was on the case, used a shim to basically shimmy into my door, and the whole thing was over within 30 mins. I have never felt so much relief! And he only charged me $75 bucks, to which I added a gracious tip. I had a follow-up call with Popeye, who will provide me a receipt to present to my landlord, to whom I will be billing for this 3-week unacceptable convenience. I highly recommend these guys...
