I'd say Ponzio's is a half step above a basic bitch diner. I say this because there are a lot more options and it's a bigger operation than most. I have been here twice, and both times were not without their issues. First time was kinda late at night, but it's a diner so who cares! All I heard about from my friend was how great the bread was. Well, it might be great, but I wouldn't know because it was too late for bread baskets? If that's the case, offer a late night menu that doesn't mention anything about delicious bread. Oh well. Second time, I ordered tomato soup and a grilled cheese. Innocuous enough, right? However, I choked on a shard of plastic in my soup. The restaurant at least didn't give me any trouble about taking the soup off the bill. And despite the molten plastic, the soup was actually really good! As was the grilled cheese. I honestly don't understand the draw of this diner. I've been to 130+ diners in NJ, and this is one of the worst. I've given it a 3 chances and had bad experiences all three times. Once, I ordered the salmon and a side side with pears. The tiny portion of salmon was still frozen in the center when I went to eat it. The pears were canned and in heavy syrup. It was pathetic. Went there on 7/5 first time ever. Had delicious Liam bean soup and a cheesestk which was delicious however the fries were lousy. When I told the the waitress that I'd like an extra pickle she says well maybe you should buy a whole side of coleslaw if you like it so much when you serve soup you need to serve it with crackers I had to ask her to go get me crackers I had asked for a lemon in my diet soda which I did not receive I had asked for a steak knife with my cheese steak which I did not get when I told her that the fries were lousy she said well next time you won't order them she was a little Hasty but however I did understand her response being in the business for almost 40 years. I am absolutely impressed with this Diner. It is in a very busy location, and has plenty of spaces to park. When I went on a Sunday afternoon, it was super crowded. We ordered mac and cheese balls with the tomato vodka sauce and I never would have thought the flavors would go together but they do, it's SO DELICIOUS. I also ordered the french toast with strawberries and was surprised that the waitress asked if I wanted the french toast grilled or fried (I didn't know there were options like that!) I wanted to try the dessert, but was super full from Breakfast, I'll have to come back another time to try it! read more

My wife was at Ponzio's today for a meeting luncheon and the food as usual was great. She is not a lunch eater so she brought me home two huge salmon cakes rice and green beans with stewed tomatoes. Simply the best salmon cakes I have had. The rice was good and the green beans with stewed tomatoes were phenomenal. I would get those salmon cakes again anytime. We love the breakfast items! The selection is good but i always get one of the omelettes. I especially like that the food is always served hot! Diners seem to be all the rage in this area and Ponzios seems to be the place to go for classic diner fare so we tried it out. I probably won't go back just because I wasn't wowed by anything even though the early 80's motif was well maintained and reminded me of being a kid. My French dip sandwich came served on a small ciabatta roll cut in thirds, these things come on baguettes, not a dinner roll. It wasn't hot either. My fries were a little warmer than room temp. The sandwich was tasty but holding a French dip that's less than an inch wide is just strange. My wife had the chicken and broccoli rabe sandwich which was hot and tasty. Maybe a bit too much of the rabe as it is a powerful green that on some bites drowned out the other flavors. Her fries were also a little warmer than room temp. My sons meal won the day with a stuffed pasta dish in what seemed like a vodka sauce (it's a kids menu item so no booze for sure). It was a great portion and the sauce was awesome but it was over cooked so the noodles were incredibly soft but for a kids meal it was great. We did get dessert, a slice of their 7 layer chocolate cake that was tasty but the cake part was kinda dry. In a place that has this many desserts there should be a menu. There's no reason for the staff to tell you about 3 desserts and seem to forget there's a whole case of it out front and even though I knew there was carrot cake, our server didn't tell us about that, or the red velvet, or the cheesecake. I've been there quite a few times over the years, both before and after becoming vegetarian. There isn't an abundance of vegetarian options (most of the ones they have are in the appetizer section). Most of the food is decent but nothing to rave about. However, their broccoli is very good so would recommend as a side. Also it was a special but they do make pretty good fried green tomatoes so maybe keep an eye out and stop by when it's available. read more

Not my favorite restaurant but suffices when you are out with the family. Had crab fries, cheeseburger and fries for my youngest and a wrap and fries for my oldest son. This was yet another piss poor experience. Service is lacking, cleanliness is an issue, but worst of all the food is just plain awful. They use a good coffee (lacas) but serve it burnt almost every time. I ordered a waffle, nothing overly complicated, but it came out soft and dry on the bottom, and hard and dusty on the top. Ugh. Others at the table ordered omelettes and things like that, all came out pretty bad. Okay I'll be honest, key word is honest, this is not a 5 star restaurant, but let's examine what the place is and consider that in this review. It's a Diner, it's in the name. This is a no frills, barebones eatery. Do not eat here, or any Diner anywhere, if you expect the type of food that the highest priced restaurants in NYC will offer. And don't expect Diners to offer a warm atmosphere, this place is floor to ceiling hard surfaces. Diners do not offer fine wines, polished glasses or even stain-free ceiling tiles, my booth is located below two stained ceiling tiles. A Diner is simple food, simple & fast service in an atmosphere that welcomes you and a guest, or just you if you're like me, without questions and for a relatively low cost to you. So why the 5 star rating? I mean, my Greek salad was terrible. Okay, okay it wasn't terrible, but it was served with room temp. tomatoes and instead of crumbling the feta over the salad, they chose to offer me two huge blocks...not nice. And they chopped the lettuce (never chop salad, this is ridiculous) so small that my fork could not fork the food. I had to scoop my salad with my fork as if I were spooning soup and this Diner does not offer yogurt sauce for your Greek salad or a pita, in fact they don't have either in the building. Again, why the 5 stars? This place is honest. They aren't trying to be something great. They are simply here to serve you food, make it fast, make it good enough and get you on your way. The waitress was perfect. She was honest. She came over, smiled, answers my questions correctly, got me what I wanted and left me alone when appropriate. In closing, when reviewing a restaurant you should always ask yourself; Is getting exactly what I expected and wanted worth 5 stars even though it's not a "5 star restaurant?" To me it is. So apparently, Meghan C and I are now social pariahs, since we have a baby. We went to Ponzio's last weekend, because Meg's sister is OBSESSED with diners, and they don't have them in North Carolina. We get there, and they stick us in what's obviously the 'families with loud children' area. Since Paxton is only a month+ old, he's still in a carseat, and doesn't make much noise, but because of this, we needed a place to put him. The tables are too small to fit four people, plus a carseat, and we couldn't slide him onto the bench seat. The one table that had an extended bench was open, but wasn't cleaned, so they said we couldn't sit there. Fine. We perched him on a chair at the end of the booth. Five minutes later, the host comes over and says that we need to move, as we're a 'fire hazard' then he proceeds to put us at a four-top table, with no additional room to put the baby. Where did the baby end up? In the aisle, in the same 'fire hazard' manner as before. Whatever. Let's freaking eat, I'm starving. I ask the waiter for the lunch menu, as it was almost 11, and I don't like breakfast foods. He says that most of the food won't be ready, as they hadn't prepped the vegetables. Really? It's nearly 11 AM! You're a diner! Anyway, he says he'll bring the lunch menu, then never returns. When he does, the wife and I want Bloody Marys. We order, they come out, and I ask for the lunch menu again. He says he'll get it. We wait longer. He comes back and takes the order from Meg's sister and her fiancee, then asks me what I want. I tell him that I want the lunch menu. Now, he's got to go find one, which took another give minutes. It's almost 11:30, at this point. It finally comes, and I have three seconds to look over the menu before he bails on us again. I order a chicken club sandwich. It was terrible. At least my bloody mary was good. What I'm more annoyed about, and marking them down big time for, was the fact that they couldn't accommodate four adults with an infant, and we were hassled because we were a fire hazard. My girlfriend and I stopped by Ponzios Saturday (7/21) around 11 pm for a bite after a concert in Camden. We live in Ardmore, but I thought that it would be cool to visit the diner where I had a good deal of my childhood. We are ignored by the hostess when we arrived who was busy speaking with three male coworkers. Finally she just grabbed some menus and said 'follow me'. She led us to a both and I asked if we could sit by the window. She looked confused and directed us to a booth dropped off the menus and walked away. No one ever took our order or even said hello. After 10 minutes we realized that everyone was getting served but us and we left. No one was the least intersted in our business, For the prices the service should be far better. Once upon a time, Ponzio's was a fabulous place. I'd like to know where that Ponzio's went, please. I dispute their use of the word "diner" as, in my Jersey girl opinion, a diner is open 24 hours a day. Ponzio's is not. I went in for breakfast today with an old friend and while it wasn't terrible, it wasn't great either. The server was decent, but we felt like we were being tag-teamed. We had two people waiting on us as one went on a break. Maybe she left. I'm not sure what happened. The lady at the register was just downright rude and completely put out by having to take our money and give change. No smile. No "how was everything?" No personality other than what you'd expect from a miserable fast food worker. The food wasn't much to speak of, either and it was pricey. The food was warm, but not hot. The toast was burnt. The bacon was barely cooked. $12 for eggs, bacon and a cup of coffee? Really? For this I traveled 10 miles and passed how many other diners? No, thanks. Never again. read more

The menu said "breakfast served all day"... But no waffles til after 9:00 pm. What??? Aren't waffles a breakfast food? According to our waitress, they put away the waffle maker after 11 am and don't break it out again til after 9 pm, "because, you know, that's when the drunk people come in and want breakfast food." I've been loyal since 98', yesterday 9/3/16 was my breaking point. The disheveled bartender/server was obnoxious and rude - to the point of me leaving no tip (has maybe happened twice in 10 years) and writing her a note about how bad her service was. She owned the manager (whole different story) and made it a point to boss him around - running for coffee, clearing tables, etc. - all the while standing in service bar complaining about a pending baby shower that was due arrive and how she wasn't getting tipped-out for it. It baffles me that the management is so unaware of how bad this place has become, what's worse is the food is consistent and they run decent specials which are well executed. We came here based on recommendations from friends who said this place had pretty good pork rolls. We're from Cali and had no idea what pork rolls were, and from their description, it was a must try while we were in NJ. Our hotel happened to be close by to Ponzio's so we decided to give it a try. This place is comparable to Denny's and my boyfriend had to order their pork roll sandwich to see what all the hype was about. I ordered the corn beef hash with potatoes and eggs. When we got the pork roll, my bf was so disappointed cuz it's pretty much like spam, and he thought spam was better! LOL. Haven't eaten here in many years... But review of today's experience-waitress was very friendly and helpful. Service was a lil on the slow side, took a good while for food to come out! Waitress visits more sporadic after we got our food and needed more beverages. I am vegetarian, ordered hash browns with assorted veggies and cheddar cheese on top, and rye toast-it wasn't piping hot when served to me, and was a lil moist and not alot of potatoes& was served white toast, sent it back for the rye which also wasn't as hot as it should have been! As I kept eating the hash browns, I tasted something that surely was scrambled egg, and saw more on one side of my dish. I specifically asked for no eggs, and when I told waitress she showed me what she wrote and she asked chef if there was egg in my dish and chef said no! So my conclusion is, while making my hash browns, the cook scrambled eggs to close to my dish, and some got into the hash browns! I couldn't eat anymore and stomach was queasy for most of the afternoon/evening after eating it! They ended up comping the meal! Thank God I wasn't allergic to eggs! My fam didn't complain about their food too much. Bacon could've been crispy, fresh toast was heavy/on the greasy side as it is deep fried as per waitress! Overall, not a bad diner experience... This was our 2nd visit to Ponzio's. My brother came into town and he wanted to eat at a diner so we went to Ponzio's. Seating was fast because it was around 930pm. However, right off the bat, it was going to b e one of those nights. The Hostess sat us at a table and my wife wanted a booth. When she asked the Hostess if we can move to one of the many empty booths, the Hostess stated no because she cant be skipping waiters for the seating. Well, we stayed at the table anyway and looked over the menu. Prices are high for a diner but the food isn't that bad. We placed our order and then waited. We waited some more. We waited for quite some time before our super slow waiter came by with the food. Keep in mind, we got there around 9:30pm. It was 10:30pm before we got our order! This was the order: Omelette with cheese, homefries, wheat toast, lentil soup, slice of coconut custard pie and scoop of ice cream, kid's mac and cheese. As you can see, NOTHING on that order takes very long to prepare considering that half it was already pre-made! Yet it took an hour to get the order. The food is ok. Have you ever fallen in love with a bowl of soup before? I hadn't, either. Then I met Ponzio's crock of creamy tomato soup, which I can only describe as a religious experience. It's a proper french onion crock full of magic tomato soup - perfectly smooth, perfectly creamy, unbelievably tasty - covered with garlic croutons and melted cheese. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. The grilled cheese that came with it was also spot on - perfectly crispy, not greasy. NOT GREASY. (Y'hear that, Bobby Flay yelling grilled cheese places a few towns over? NOT GREASY.) We also ordered a French Dip sandwich that was positively life affirming, served with an au jous that was flavorful and, again, miraculously, not grease-tastic. Crab fries were not just perfectly seasoned, but the fries themselves were that magic combination of crisp but not burnt and not greasy. (I would put them on par with, if not maybe even edging out, Chickies and Petes. Yeah, I said it.) My black and white milkshake was average, and service was attentive but slow. On our way out, 15 minutes before closing, we noticed them cheerfully seating a couple that had just walked in the door. I can't stop thinking about this soup. I went on an adventure through New Jersey out of boredom with a friend and ended up here, never having heard of it. The food was good, honestly, I'd say it was typical diner food. I have no complaints, my steak was fine, filling, and cooked to my specifications, but there was nothing exciting about it. It was just a meal that left me content. The service wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything over the top either, sodas were filled around the time they were needed and the food didn't feel like it took 5 years to get there. The best part, in my opinion, was the BAKERY. I would come back for the bakery alone. I plan to come back soon, actually. They had penguin shaped cookies and chocolate covered rice krispy treats and all sorts of other cookies and cakes and sweets. We went here, because it was my friend's father's favorite place to eat. This is a classic style American restaurant. Not the kind of chef-driven farm-to-table place that I usually choose, but tonight was for the history and nostalgia. The restaurant is huge! Very large bakery counter with cookies, cupcakes, cakes and cheesecakes. Large "diner" area with counter and booths, several dining rooms and a large bar area. We waited at the bar, intending to get some drinks before our complete party arrived, but service was so slow, no one ever asked us for our order before the rest of our party arrived. Once we were all assembled, our party of six was seated in the Garden Room at a four-topper with leaves extended and seating arranged for six. It was a bit tight, but we were able to all eat without knocking elbows too badly. The portions here are HUGE and the prices are a BARGAIN for the amount of food that they serve. Each meal could have easily fed two people. I've not seen so much uneaten food go back to the kitchen in quite some time. All of the meals that we ordered came with bread. Their bread basket is a mix of breads that they bake in house daily. There is a lot of it, and I was able to take home a couple pieces of cinnamon bread which I toasted for my breakfast in the morning. For my meal, I had the broiled salmon. The meal came with bread, a side salad, and two vegetable sides. I was pleased when they said they could could it in extra virgin olive oil instead of butter. I got both sides as broccoli, and had almost the equivalent of an entire head. The fish was perfectly cooked, with a good sear on the outside and well cooked all the way through. The portion of salmon was huge! I'd say it was at least two servings worth, if not more. The broccoli while generous in proportion was a bit overcooked, but still quite edible. Service overall was just "ok". Our waitress wasn't able to keep track very well of who had ordered what, and we kept having to ask for missing things to be brought to the table. Another man also kept checking on our table, someone who had worked there since before the current building was built, and he was extremely charming and welcoming to us. On the way out to pay for our check at the counter, we got some baked goods to go. All and all this was a great classic American diner restaurant experience. Service could have been better, food prep could have been more refined, but I need to remember where I am. 4 stars, because it's a diner. It is what it is. A good classic experience. read more

We recently visited this once amazing diner in Cherry Hill for the first time after over a year. Unfortunately things have changed IMO. As mentioned before the menu has been reduced to a very light version of a full-scale diner. We frequented this establishment for breakfast, and much to our surprise the breakfast menu had very few items on it. I decided to have the sausage, eggs over easy and potato pancakes. Our food arrived within minutes of our order. This may be an advantage to some, however there seemed to be enough time for a wait staff to go to a chafing dish and plate our food. From the looks of the dish when it arrived, I believe the only thing that was cooked fresh where our eggs. Although edible with good flavor, the portion size and brevity of service left much to be desired. Our booth, leaned on a slant causing our beverages to slide towards the aisle. We had to position other objects on the table in front of our beverages to stop them from rolling into the aisle. Our server was amazing, however the cashier upon leaving must've had the worst day of her life since she couldn't even tell us the amount of the check, pointed to the screen for us to pay, and obviously found the words "thank you" to be a foreign language. This mighty giant of an establishment seems to have fallen from the heights of infamy to the normalcy of other sub-standard diners and restaurants. I can dig. Solid bloodys. Solid mimosas (which can be megmosas because they give you a little bottle of champagne so I can do my preferred 7/8 champagne to 1/8 OJ). Eggs benedict are very good. The only thing I don't like is the service. Sometimes it's great, sometimes we catch an attitude for absolutely no reason. When we go to pay, it's almost always a fiasco. If the server doesn't write their number, it's 10 minutes to find them and get it all documented - guys: ring me the eff up and figure it out later. Or, there's someone trying to pay who clearly left their frontal lobe at home. The bakery looks amazing but have never had any reason to buy anything.
