They tried to hit me with their food truck while I was riding my bike in the bike lane on Court Street then proceeded to swerve INTO the bike lane ahead of me and brake check me then went on a profanity laced tirade about how they don't stop for bikes and that I was a freak and a loser. Ponchitos lost a loyal customer today and I'm telling everyone I know to stay away as well. Also, this was the owner Frank Mignacca and his wife that did this to me. Based on how irate they were at me for literally just using the bike lane I was supposed to, I suspect that they were intoxicated, so if you have them cater an event for you beware they may show up drunk. I have called the state police and will be pressing charges on them for attempted vehicular assault. It just blows my mind that people could hate someone so much dor just minding their own business trying to go to work. read more

I had a chicken super burrito and it was excellent. The chicken was tender and chopped for my order. It was HUGE but didn't fall apart or make a mess. Good flavor. With Guac it was $17. Perfection again! Their burritos are massive, I can't eat it all in one sitting so I'll have a second meal later! The steak was juicy and tender. The pico de gallo is full of flavor. They make everything fresh and you can taste it! Delicious! The staff is nice and a bonus they had live music. It's nice it's a very casual place to eat. We had a large group of 7 there tonight and everyone loved their meal alongside being impressed with the large serving sizes. The floor is dirty and so are the walls. But the food and service and the general feeling of the place was just what I like. This is THE taco joint. They've got the freshest ingredients, the most tender, juicy, delicious meats, and the big hitter: Chicharonnes. Not fried to death pork skins in a bag like I know you're imagining, but rubbed and fried pork belly chunks that are to die for. I believe it is a South American recipe (possibly Peruvian) that is entirely unique to Ponchito's, and I make a special effort to get lunch here whenever I'm within an hours distance and not restrained for time Not that they're slow, by any means. I've waited for fresh Cheech to fry before, but they've always got the standards ready to go. I only eat tacos, having perfected my favorite combination, but I've had a quesadilla before which was massive and delicious. The burritos are huge and the super burritos are, well.... Insane. The two gentlemen that have literally always been behind the counter for lunch are amazing, friendly, and quick. This seems to be a Syracuse trying. The divier the place the better the food, yes I think I just coined a new word. Don't be fooled this is not an authentic restaurant of the Mexican kind, instead it is a top of the line Tex Mex restaurant. There's about seating for 15 inside and four picnic table out front. Not when you walked in the menus posted behind the counter but your best bet is just to go ahead and ask the food preppers what's good. That's exactly what I did and I walked out with a super burrito with chicken and some of the best chicharones I've ever had. You have three or four protein options, black or pinto beans, fresh salsa fresh guacamole and the rest of your burrito fillings. Just by looking over the counter you can tell how fresh the food is and you're getting stuff that's fresh out of the kitchen for your food preparation. The wraps are very fresh and don't burst when you're trying to eat. I would rather eat here than at any Chipotle. The food servers and service are great, helpful, cheerful, and really do make you feel welcome. Some of my coworkers had massive quesadillas that really would feed 2 I had a few slices and happy to report that they were great. It's a bit of a chore to find this place if you're from out of town but don't let the area deter you, as with all good food finds the most unexpected places always have the best food. read more

Good customer service and a giant burrito! I'll preface this review with the fact that I'm from the west coast so I'm used to really good taco shacks. Downside is it was a $13 carne asada burrito that wasn't really carne asada. It was a bland cut of meat that was more like stew meat than real carne. Salsa was a typical Tapatio out of a bottle and nothing to write home about. I would go back but with lower expectations and I would try something else the next time. read more

Heard about this from some colleagues after complaining to them that I have yet to find any solid Mexican food in the area. They referred me here. This place is a stand alone shop and not very flashy. When I went, they had run out of their carnitas, which was a huge bummer. I ended up getting 3 tacos, 1 chicken and 2 steak. Their steak is seasoned very well and juicy. Their chicken was a bit dry. The tacos themselves are topped with meat, lettuce, hot sauce, and their version of pico. More of the Mission style burrito idea (aka burritos for gringo San Franciscans...), but for 8.25 a nice sized torpedo. Your pollo burrito has a whole diced chicken breast, arroz blanco, beans (pinto or frijoles negros), fresh salsa, queso, and a warmed tortilla, and some salsa fuego. They keep the Tapatio, Valentino, and El Yucateco on the tables if the heat isn't sufficient. They also have pork or beef options which are both quite good. Fresh tortilla chips are an extra side...they also have Jarritos in the fridge. This is a nice little compact place in an pretty nondescript North side area with a few small industrial shops on New Court Ave. in a city of overall industrial desolation...aka it ain't pretty (most of Syracuse isn't). I had to stay at a hotel out by Carrier Circle for this business trip...one look around and you'll yearn for the 1960s when all these abandoned factories were humming. "Owned and operated by well trained gringos" is the motto of Ponchitos, a tiny Tex Mex place, that now has a second location, that originated in the Lyncourt area. The original location here on N Court Ave is definitely aimed at a more American style Mexican dish, but their portions and flavor a still great. I usually go with a super burrito, which used to be around $6, but have since been upped to around $10 with their expanding to a second location. Their portions are still more than worth the price. Their Burritos are about the size of your forearm. They'll definitely fill you. Their Dr Pepper wings are awesome, as well as their breakfast Burritos. They open at 7 AM most days, and tend to have varying closing times. The original location is a small, white unassuming building. You'd miss it if you didn't know it was there. The service behind the counter is usually good, the guys who make the food tend to be polite and personable. The girls who ring up the food, on the other hand, tend to be somewhat rude or indifferent at times. A lot of people seemed to have criticized their flavor going downhill since opening the second location, but I recently went back after not eating here for 4 years while living in a different state, and while the prices changed, the portions and flavor have not. Yes, I admit that I had the courage ( OK, I jest !) to intentionally drive to and park at Ponchitos. It's a bit drab on the outside and it was absolutely worth the trip !! This is, first and foremost, a Tex-Mex or simply an Americanized interpretation of Mexican flavors. They have a very basic menu offering burritos, tacos, and nachos but, there is quite a healthy variety of combinations you can have uniquely made for you. I went for their burritos. When I entered, I was greeted by a friendly staff and immediately got to view their selection of meats: pork, chicken, steak, ground beef. The meat is fresh chopped, except the ground beef, right before you. Of course there were black and red beans, guacamole, pico de gallo and I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a few things! They also offer chicharrones. Sadly, they did not have any available on the Monday evening when I visited. So, I ordered a pork, black bean, guacamole, pico de gallo, rice, cheese, sour cream super burrito. It was $7.99 which is more expensive than I thought but, once I saw them preparing my burrito, I understood...they started with a huge portion of a whole chunk of tender pork and chopped it, not mincing it, into small pieces. They continued to add the ingredients at my request. By the time they wrapped the burrito around the ingredients, I thought how the hell will I eat something this large??? Not to mention, I had also offered a soft fish taco ! So, the burrito was enormous and easily weighed over a pound. It was neatly prepared and when I took my first bite, I realized that this would be a challenge to finish. This was fresh and delicious and while the flavor was a solid Americanized burrito. The soft fish taco was prepared with my choice of grilled fish (fried is also available), for $3.99. It was a medium size taco and the freshly cooked fish was white, firm and tender. I really preferred this to the burrito because I love seafood. It was simple...fresh grilled fish, pico de gallo, guacamole...simple and delicious. Don't be discouraged by the appearance or location. I see there is many mixed reviews on this spot so I wasn't sure what to expect. Their location near downtown is adorable and modern but do not expect that at this location. Def a takeout location and more of a hole in the wall (which is totally fine :) ) I got the steak super burrito and the burrito was huge and the steak portion enormous. I didn't have any issues with the seasoning, was not bland and the pico I got on it was quite good however they put cold shredded cheese on at the end and after the other cold toppings so the cheese doesn't melt and wasn't good. I was only able to eat a third of it and did smother it with verde and hot sauce I had at home bc it was kinda dry. Sure I would try it again however wouldn't rush out to get it or be someplace I would crave and tell my friends about. read more

If you are super hungry, like eat-a-horse-hungry, Ponchitos is the place. The Regular burrito is massive, its probably the size of a small woodland creature. If you arent eating for two, i have heard the way to go is to get 2 of the smaller tacos. (update: i had the tacos, 2 are a much more appropriate portion size, and they are FANTASTIC!) Good burritos, maybe not the freshest ingredients picked right from the farm, but still good. Their carnitas are my FAVORITE- so tender and flavorful. I also love the steak. My boyfriend loves the ground beef. It's super casual, there is dining but it's small cafeteria style. We always get our food to go. There's nothing fancy about this place but if you're looking for straight up delicious tacos, this is where you go. Ponchito's is a great spot for the E.Syracuse lunch crowd or for those looking for some good Mexican takeout. What Ponchito's lacks in looks, it makes up for with great food. The serving sizes for burritos, quesadillas, tacos, etc are BIG - so come prepared to eat or to have leftovers. I have had a few things on the menu now and can say that I've never had a bad meal here. Chicken quesadillas are made with slow roasted pulled chicken that they dice up while you wait and burritos are loaded to near capacity. They offer chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, and veggie for the meat/veggie choices, so there is something for everyone. Their "chips" that they make are great - they are crispy and kept piping hot under a heat lamp before being served. Warning to those who choose to eat there - you will come out smelling like fried food. The place is just too small and there are too many fryers going at once for this not to happen. I recommend getting in, getting out, and then enjoying your food elsewhere. Can't beat this place for quick, tasty Mexican. Price is ok - but with their serving size, hard to complain. read more

For the love of God, share one with a friend. The outside of this little joint is intimidating, but don't let that stop you from wandering in. Ponchito's ingredients are always super fresh and consistently have great taste. Yes, the food is very average Mexican, but it's priced cheap and get the job done. Try their homemade potato chips with the spicy ketchup, they're awesome. Quesadillas here are also tasty. Thanks to yelp I am now burrito-tosed. I found this joint on yelp while in town for work...not even sure how im writing this. Its a pretty simple menu....tacos, burritos, and maybe some other stuff. I went with the steak burrito. Dude behind the counter grabbed a boatload of steak...I thought he was making multiple burritos, nope just mine. I originally went with the regular burrito, but when I told him I would like the rice, onions, etc. It bacame a super burrito. No big deal only another dollar. This thing was ginormous! How he was able to wrap this thing is beyond me. When I saw they had el yucateco and some other hot sauce on the dining tables I knew I had to eat it there. Im glad I did, because it gave the burrito the extra kick and taste it needed. The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is because it was missing some flavor. My suggestion would be to possibly season or marinate the meats. If I didn't have the hot sauce I probably would give it 3 instead of 4 stars. Came back here for the first time in years! Definitely still has that classic Ponchito's taste. Although I did notice the portions are a lot smaller then when I had it, I understand times change and that certainly doesn't take away from the flavor at all. Everyone from the counter to the cooks are always super friendly which is always a big plus in my book. I used GrubHub to order for myself and my father, I got the ground beef quesadilla and he got chicken tacos and a ground beef tacos. Now I couldn't tell whether they don't have as many options as they used to but the "Extras" part of the menu seemed a little sparse. My dad mentioned that they used to have soft tortillas before, but there was no option for them and the tacos came in the hard shells. Maybe it was because I ordered online, but I got the distinct impression that there were not as many toppings as there used to be. And while I'm on that note, of the 7 or so Extras that were on the menu, 3 of them were listed as unavailable at the time. And then when I got into the place to pick my food up, they told me that the condiment I originally ordered was also out. So 4 out of 7 toppings doesn't exactly give you a lot of options. Final positive takeaway: the food was all set about 10 minutes after I ordered, WAY faster than the Grubhub estimate, which was nice. I walked in, skipped the line, paid, and walked out in about 2 minutes. Will definitely come back again, but maybe I'll try ordering in person to see if the options are different. read more

I thought I had written a review and realized to my dismay I had not. Well here it is GO TO THIS PLACE AND GET SOME FOOD! I have been to both of their locations for many years now. The one on the turnpike is small and gets very hot in there in the summer, so if you want to sit inside and enjoy your food, this is not the location. The original store on new court is awesome. The staff are always friendly (at both locations) and they are patient while you try to figure out what you want to try. To say the burritos are huge is an understatement. They must be about a pound of yummy goodness. I always get the carnita with grilled veggies (onions, peppers and zucchini) with rice, lettuce, pico de gallo, medium house sauce and cheese. I think I have only eaten the entire burrito ONCE. Its just so much food. They put so much of everything into it and I think the cost is just under 8.00! My husband orders the loaded nachos with ground beef every time. it is a hot mess to look at but he loves it. (salsa, lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, hot peppers). Our son usually gets a chicken or beef burrito with just cheese, sauce, and rice and his is almost as big as mine. I have seen the owner on premise many of times and he will be happy to talk to you or give you a nod. When we go, I think we usually pay close to $30.00 for 2 burritos, loaded nachos and 3 drinks. (for some of us it's 2 meals for the price of 1). The restaurants themselves are a basic table and chairs, with a kitchen over there kinda place. Maybe seating for 12-15, but they have tables outside last I knew. I do not think anyone cares about ambiance when the food is out of this world good! Ponchitos Taqueria is nothing fancy, basically a counter and a few tables. The tacos are great and they are large. They are also inexpensive. You have your choice of ground beef, carnita (pork), grilled vegetables, cubed steak or chicken and choices of toppings including hot sauce, sour cream & guacamole. The hard tacos are served on two freshly cook corn tortillas. The meat and toppings are piled on. This is messy eating but they are worth the messiness. I will return and try a burrito. read more
