I was in the Fairmount area and have been wanting to try this Mexican restaurant with the viral soft serve margaritas! It's quite a bit off the beaten path even from West Genesse Street. I arrived at 5pm on a Friday evening. After examining the menu it was only a very short wait to order at the counter. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and Mexican platter to go as well as the strawberry berry twist soft serve margarita that is served with a little ducky and a shovel on top! Love it! It seemed more like I was having a soft serve ice cream than a margarita, very sweet but good nonetheless. They do also offer Margarita soft serve flights as well! Fun Mexican themed ambiance, seems like a majority of to go business as it is not a sit down restaurant situation. Food and margarita were ready in a short wait time. Total was $49. I would recommend adding more toppings to the quesadilla for the $15.50 price. The Mexican platter I took to go and after a nearly 40 minute drive was leaking and somewhat liquified. It was still tasty enough. I basically just mixed it all together. I was happy to have made the trip and look forward to trying other flavors of Margaritas and menu items! My girlfriend and i went for lunch on a weekday. Plenty of free parking. The place was empty but it was early. Modern decor maybe even sparse. Server was lovely and took our order promptly. Ordered chips and salsa. And a side of guacamole. I was SHOCKED when the bill came we had to pay for chips and salsa! Whaaat?? Ordered a soda and a tea. Also shocked when we got the check drinks were a whopping $4! We each got a lunch special. Mine was Birria quesadilla. It was okay but not fabulous. Just good enough. The salsa was AMAZING and very fresh. However when was all said and done, our lunch cost us $65!!! $65 for chips, salsa, guacamole and two lunch specials. Nope won't be going back at that price. We ordered a burrito, a quesadilla, and their notorious Super Loaded Nachos - I don't even know how they got the container closed! Came on Cinco de Mayo and the line was very long but moved pretty quickly though. When I got my food, was blown away by the portion size. I do wish that the platter came with additional tortillas without extra cost. For the amount of toppings you get, two tortillas really isn't enough sadly. Ordered off of toast so I could pick it up on my way home from work. Said it would be ready in 35 minutes but was probably ready within 20 min. The store has a lot of space to sit down and eat and this is a much better version of Moe's in my opinion. They even have picnic tables outside under a large tent, great for a nice warmer day. Now the food is absolutely delicious and the portion you get for the Mexican platter is absurd!! This definitely could've been divided up between 3 but I demolished it because the flavor and all the toppings are amazing. The chipotle chicken is so flavorful and the sauce is yum!!! I got the jalapeño heat salsa states it's extra hot but I found to be more flavorful with small spice than hot. This is a popular place as evidenced by the line out the door on a Friday night. It was well worth the short wait. The staff are just lovely, and a young woman prepared our dishes as requested, and then stacked them near the register where we were checked out by who appeared to be the owner. That's where you can order frozen margaritas and a variety of beer. Again, the woman behind the register was so nice and made sure we had everything we needed, bringing the beer and chips to the table for us. The menu was a little bit limited, but that makes it easier to move the lines through. I got the Mexican platter which came with two meats, rice, and a choice of beans, and whatever else you wanted on the dish. I chose guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, and Cheese. The guac and sour cream came in this cute little taco cup. My husband got three tacos made specifically the way he wanted them. The food is fresh and tasty. We were so excited to finally make it to Boom Boom Mex Mex. I have heard many positive things and have also heard high praise of their food truck. Unfortunately my experience wasn't the same as others. We witnessed some female employees openly ice out their coworker behind the counter, and even bump into the poor kid and say "my bad" (it didn't appear accidental). Then there was the gentleman with the salt and pepper beard and glasses aggressively slamming folding chairs onto the tables surrounding us so he could close the dining room. We weren't sure what time they closed and I feared that we'd come in late and were rudely holding the dining room open. But no. They weren't closing for another 45 minutes, he just wanted the dining room closed. I felt like I had to hurry up and eat to get the heck out. It was the most unwelcome I have ever felt eating in a local restaurant. It was so disheartening. The food was ok. Not much flavor to the rice or the beans. The meat (chipotle chicken and pork al Pastor) was average. It's so hard to post a less than positive review. But I feel strongly that the owner should know how guests were treated. read more

After hearing / reading so many awesome reviews about Boom Boom Mex Mex, I was excited to have finally made my way to their restaurant. I would consider this restaurant more of a "cafeteria style" restaurant, which I actually enjoyed. It made grabbing lunch a breeze on a Friday afternoon. I recalled reading a review that mentioned their chipotle chicken quesadilla was amazing, so that's what I ordered along with a side of nachos and queso guacamole. The quesadilla was pretty tasty, filled with tender chicken and cheese. The chipotle sauce was also pretty good, not as much of a kick as I assumed their would be, but definitely a tasty quesadilla nonetheless. My lunch date ordered the mexican pork tacos, which he stated were delicious and filling. He also tried their atomic sauce and immediately said, "That's how you do a hot sauce!" He also proceeded to sweat just a little (lol) but couldn't stop adding the sauce to his tacos. The staff were all very kind, and the service was efficient and quick! I've been told I need to try their taco salad, so that's definitely next on my list. It's safe to say I'll be visiting Boom Boom Mex Mex again soon. read more

I got there right when they opened so no lines. I see that the new owners added a few new things to the menu which was nice(breakfast). I got one of my favorite a taco salad, the portion were what remembered, a good size . The pork al pastor had ok flavor, could use more seasoning(just my preference). I love the taco shell(my favorite part), flakey and a nice crunch not stale. It was pricey for a taco salad(but what isn't pricey these days). Love, love, love this place. I come here a lot. I love Mexican food; and, the food here is always very fresh and delicious. I have come here when it's very busy and also when I was the only one here. I'd recommend stopping by on the early side; it does get busy here. There are lots of toppings and sides you can add to your burrito here. I love ordering the chicken burrito with rice, vegetables, salsa and guacamole. You can sit inside, or you can sit outside here as well. I'm looking forward to stopping back here again soon. The ambiance is ok, as you sit on plastic chairs, so it's not really a place you linger in conversation or to spend loads of time with family. Last time I waste my hard earned dollars here. This place has went way downhill since the original Spanish owners left. Terrible staff. They once again messed up my order, due to the pushy, rude, Karen's-in-training that work there. I ordered three tacos and received a sloppy mess of ingredients that totaled one taco worth of food. They rush you through ordering and really skimp in the portions. my tacos had very little guacamole or sour cream due to the fact that the girl making them took one little scoop and slapped it in all three. they had barely any lettuce on them and kept saying, 'is that all'. I said cilantro and she interrupts, 'anything else?' And I said 'nothing.' She then said, 'onions?' and threw them on all over the tacos before I could say anything. I used to come here occasionally during my OCC days. Now that I'm back on the Hill I've been back for a few nostalgic visits. When I was a teenager growing up in a small town not far from here, a Mexican family moved to our town and started attending our church. They had moved here from another town in Upstate NY, where they had lived for many years. Nevertheless, in a genuine effort to make them feel more at home, our event planner Linda started a Taco Night (pronounced "Tacko" Night), which became one of our longer standing traditions. The vibe was exactly what you'd expect. They even kept a jar of jalapeños on hand for anyone brave enough to handle them, at which point the room would whoop and holler in awe of the bravery. I've never had Mexican food outside of Central New York, but of the places I have been to, this place is by far the most Tacko Night I've had since my church days. It's a great place to meet your friends when it's gotta be all the way up the hill. I'm sure I'll wind up here again just out of proximity and price. We've tried everything on the menu, making sure to include all types of meat and ingredients at some point along the way. In terms of quality of the food, we just weren't wowed by anything in particular. The Pork Al Pastor at least had a sweetness to it, which broke it somewhere into the "flavored" spectrum. The rest didn't even take me as far as the stuff I make at home with a single packet of Great Value "Mexican Seasoning". Their super loaded nachos are definitely the best buy. read more

Stopped in, finally, on our way home from Exolorinf at the University of Syracuse. Just 10 minutes from downtown Marcellus, this is a surprisingly good mex mex (get it) eatery. TLDR: Boom! The tacos are bomb. Go there now. I had hoped to be able to stop in over the past week and it worked out that it was on our way home today. Yay for serendipity and yay for our tastebuds. We both chose the 3 taco bundle and soft shells. I couldn't tell if the hard shells were house-made (the taco salad bowls were definitely made in-house) but I'll try those next time. The selection of proteins was wider than the typical taqueria and we had chicken en chipotle, perilla pork, Philly steak, and ground beef. He enjoyed each of his 3 different ones, ranking Philly steak and the chicken en chipotle tops. For me, the chicken and pork were tied and were *very tasty - flavorful and moist. I'm salivating thinking about them even hours later. Sometimes I shy away from pork because it can end up too dry but this was amazingly delicious. The food was made in front of us in a line in a way similar to a chain burrito eatery that you may know. The mild sauce was a sabroso addition on top of the cilantro, lettuce and cheese. Next time, I'll have a frozen margarita or Mexican beer. He wants to try a burrito and I will switch to hard sheep tacos. Other than that, I'll probably go street style with cilantro and onions...and salsa. For protein, I'll decide on the fly. Try out Boom Boom Mex Mex! After hearing about this place for years, my husband finally got me here. It's apparently under new management, but since this was my first visit, I had nothing to compare it to. For an assembly line fast casual Mexican place, this was delicious. I got the tacos, and loved when the girl behind the counter suggested I try 3 different proteins (no extra charge), so I went with the beef, the sweeter of the two pork options, and the poblano peppers and cheese. I mixed up toppings as well, and would get all but the poblanos again (I was expecting more of a green-based grilled pepper, and this was very tomato-based). Everything was great, and the servers were cheerful and helpful. Apparently it's also a BYOB spot, so we'll pack a few Coronas for our next visit (and there will be a next visit!). read more

It's been a couple of years since I have been to this place...not because of the food, but the pandemic...I forgot how great this place is...the menu choices are limited, tacos, burritos, salads, and a platter...but those items are exceptional here...the "new" owners do the old owners proud by pumping out their original recipes...everything tastes the same. They are light, flakey, and double shelled to prevent them from falling apart. With a wide variety of different meats/sauces you can satisfy your craving in a variety of flavors and creations. This is the by far the best mexican food in the Syracuse, rochester, and buffalo area. Do yourself a favor and stop by any day of the week for a Mexican treat.
