My family and I are from Mexico City and moved to Plano, TX 8 years ago, it took us almost 2 years to find a real and good mexican family restaurant and we found it in El Pollo Salsa in Carrolton, TX, The food is real Mexican food, not strange texmex. What a great place. The salsa's all tend to be hot, even the ones marked Mild. But the food is good and served quickly. One thing I will say is they limit your chips, and only serve salsa in small little cups. Portion control seems to be how they keep prices low. Unlike just about every other Mexican place that provides limitless chips. But that's a minor complaint. I'll be going back soon. read more

Being from California I have been looking for a good carne asada burrito, like I used to get back home. I ordered the stuffed burrito with carne asada. When I got my burrito it was the wrong meat. I told them that I ordered carne asada and I was told that the carne asada was only for the fries. It did not start out great, with that being said my shredded beef burrito was awesome. Although, I had to drive back around the drive-thru because they sent me on my way with chicken fajitas the first time, so not the best first impression but still good. We have been going to Pollo Salsa for years and really love the place. The chicken is prepared very well and is very consistent. The beans are fabulous and the salsa bar is great. The first time we went here in May we ate in on a weekend for lunch around noon and thought it was okay - nice interior, okay food (although my chicken was a little tough and dry), a salsa bar, and seemed like someplace we'd eat at again, especially considering that it is very close by us. We were a little surprised that it was so empty at lunchtime though, and I would notice when I drove by that they never seemed to be very busy. The second time we got their food maybe explains why people seem to stay away. That time my spouse picked up dinner via the drive-thru on a weeknight around 6 p.m. At home when we opened the containers our food was just inedible. I got the chicken flautas and they smelled like a barnyard - literally! The smell was...chicken poo and straw. It was horrible - I gagged and my spouse nearly did after he confirmed that, yep, it smelled like manure. After the smell test it all went into the garbage! I eat a lot of grilled chicken. Mostly pollo Regio(no I do not work for them). This place is a knock off that is more expensive, non-refillable drinks, and you get three small portion cups for salsa. The chicken is cooked on gas, not wood or charcoal. Small portions of chicken, beans and rice. I have eaten here twice and nothing has changed. I asked the employee at the window to please make sure they gave me all dark meat because the last few times they have gotten my order wrong. I just got home and opened my order and it is wrong again. I also asked for some Pico de Gallo and was told that cost extra. Even though I paid $8.99 for 4 pieces of chicken. This place takes me back to the way El Pollo Loco (California) was before Y2K. They make chicken and they make it right. I've eaten there, I ashamed to say, at least twice a week since May 2009. It is basically a hit or miss venue. I had some of the best chicken and some of the worst all in one week. What I like about this place is the fact that they will give you what your ask for; you want moist chicken, they will provide. Great beans and rice, so, so everything else. Don't forget, they have all types of drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Sunday and Saturdays are their busy days (real busy after church) and weekdays between 2 to 5 pm are the slowest and, I think, the best times to go. They have a salsa bar that says mild, but it all taste hot. Deserts are good, but nothing to write about on yelp. Kudos to the staff, they are friendly and patient. I've only had breakfast there once and it was average. They make tacos, but most people come for the pollo, véale allí amigo. read more

The salsas (especially the brown one) are why I come back though. You can't get your own refills on sodas but I think if you ask nicely, they'll oblige. Not a bad value overall. My first and likely only experience with Pollo Salsa was a mid-afternoon drive-thru visit. I ordered a chicken burrito combo and brought it home for a late lunch. What makes it a combo? You get a drink. The burrito was there, with unimpressive spoonfuls of salty guacamole, and runny sour cream that had been laid down on a bed of tired, wilted, rusty lettuce. Surprise came when I opened the burrito to dress it and found beef (least I hope that's what it was) instead of chicken. Figured that was OK and proceeded to dine, but the meat had an off-flavor like it had been kept around too long and the sauce on it was too strangely seasoned and spiced to enjoy. Seems like there was a faint hint of oregano going on - nothing specific enough that I could curse it by name. The salsa was on the other end of the scale, smelling and tasting like immature green vegetables despite its bright red color. Ordered the 2 piece combo and the bf got the chicken enchiladas. The chicken was way too salty. It was like sucking on a salt block. I will say it was moist and well cooked but very heavy handed in the seasoning. That chicken must have been a preemie because the two pieces were so tiny. The fries were undercooked and over salted as well. Enchilada dinner did not fair any better. Guac was gray and lumpy like cottage cheese and the rest of the meal was just meh. The first time I came to this place I ordered a chicken fajita burrito. It was mostly fat pieces. I know some places have their bad day, so I decided to go again today. Decided to play it safe so I got a cheese quesadilla. How hard is that to screw up, right? Well it was suppsed to come with guacamole, sour cream and salsa. They forgot the guacamole, and my salsa tasted like it was old. Had a real sour taste to it.However the tortilla had a nice grilled flaky texture to it. I dont think I'll be giving them a try again. So damn good. I can't tell you how satisfied I was, it was a "you had to be there" moment. Taco shells were crispy and thick, perfect for meaty tacos. The beef was pulled beef, and was cooked perfectly. Usually I get sick from certain taco places beef' because it's too greasy, but this was not greasy or fatty at all. Their salsa was almost like a pico salsa. Guacamole was fresh, and their lettuce for their tacos was crunchy and fresh.
