Not sure about the ratings from others, but I really enjoyed lunch at Pollo Campero. I am very picky about chicken and not impressed with a lot of chicken spots, and generally skeptical. I took a chance and won. The staff were very friendly and pleasant as well as helpful. I decided to go with nuggets which were real chicken and not ground up by products and other weird ish. I had baked beans for the side dish, but they were just OK to me, but baby, the empanadas were delicious. Outside of my empanadas, these were some of the best I've had outside of my home. And I was really impressed and like the idea of refills on Horchata! I felt like a real winner with that alone. Also, after ordering, I was told to find a seat and that the staff would bring my food to the table. I thought that was a nice touch as well as the plating they used, which made it feel a little more special than fast food. The chicken has flavorful taste and perfectly matched with the complimentary sauce, the coleslaw has a distinctive taste that fits to perfection and they have the best plantain I have tried. Fried had less spices but still quite flavorful. Not as salty as other popular fried chicken franchises. For sides, I chose yuca fries and plantains. Yuca fries were really good. Not greasy at all. I love yuca in general so these were delicious even eaten alone. Plantains were ok. Mostly a filler. Tortillas were terrible. Very gritty and broke apart. But practically free ... We tried 12-Piece Family Meal with half grilled chicken & half fried chicken this time. The grilled chicken was so tender, juicy and flavorful. It's much better and worth to order than the fried chicken. The family meal came with 3 sides and tortilla or dinner rolls. The corn salad is our favorite, appetizing and healthy. I'm so glad that I accidentally discovered this gem of a restaurant. This store's roots first began in Guatemala and I'm so glad that they decided to expand their business globally. There are several stores located throughout NY and NJ and several others located throughout the USA. This is family-owned business that is still owned by the patriarch of the family and has been in business for over 45 years. This is my third visit to Pollo Campero. I can be completely honest but I didn't think that the food was going to be as good as it was. They definitely set me up because it was delicious and quite flavorful without being salty. There are many sides that they offer with the meals. I've tried the beans with sausage, fries, corn salad and mashed potatoes which were all scrumptious. The fried chicken, oh how I wish that I had the secret recipe for this flavorful and tasty chicken. I love good fried chicken and this definitely suits my palate and made my tummy extra happy. The citrus grilled chicken, oh me oh my, simply delightful. You can either takeout or dine in at Pollo Campero. If you dine in, you are asked to take a seat and your order is brought to you. The employees are very kind and helpful. There is music playing at a decent level. The atmosphere is quiet and comfortable where you can enjoy your meal and savor the food. I slept on giving this place a review here on Yelp. This has become one of my more favorite spots...if not, my favorite chicken spot, better than KFC, Popeyes and slightly over Jollibee. Fried or Grilled you're gonna get the best out of their chicken, their sides are delicious, my usual favs are the Campero rice & Plantains and I also recommend their special drinks from Mango, Guava to Horchata, it has that authentic Latin feel as opposed to your usual soft drink. I stumbled upon this chicken place, never heard of them seems to be a lot of them around. I ordered a grill chicken sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy. I have to say it tasted pretty good well seasoned and nicely charred. The mashed potatoes were piping hot the way I like it, and good as well. They have a selection of fried chicken, buffalo wings, crispy chicken sandwiches. A good amount of sides rice, potatoes, mac &cheese, fries etc.. I have a LOVE/HATE feeling for this place. SERVICE: Very average. Pehaps the place needs a manager to oversee the execution of the food. Or maybe a chef OR a very good cook. FOOD: the flavors are there, roasted chicken has an amazing taste, the fried one, of course not a fan, but it does have good flavor and texture. However, few times i have gotten my order wrong, that is how I know the fried chicken taste good despite being too oily for my taste. I can make my peace with that. Most of the times the roasted chicken looks great on the outside and salmonella RAW in the inside. Few times it's almost charcoal burned but still bit raw inside, have only eaten the top side. I have come to this place more than a few times, but it's time to say "sayonara! Adeui! Chao! Goodbye." GREAT flavor but serious lack of execution on their food. I can also make my peace with the level of salt they add, because u can buy a small white rice from the Chinese store few doors down and sort of level it. Had been wanting to try out this place for a while. Finally got the lunch special they have currently, 6 for $6 (3 pcs of chicken, roll or tortilla, drink and a side). Chicken options are grilled, fried, or extra crispy. I hate giving bad reviews bc afterall, taste is subjective. Good, large enough portiin but the fried chicken was too salty for my taste. The Peruvian style lime infused chicken was tasteless. The fried chicken had a hint of seasoning but nothing to write home about. The empanadas were filled with grease. I thought I asked for chicken not oil empanadas. As soon as I bit into the empanada out comes a pepito pepper and three tablespoons of oil squirted out. The empanada was so oily that it overpowered the chicken filling. The plantains were just as oily. To the point that I had to pat them dry to get some of the excess oil off. Dont not eat here. My friend has been suffering from food poisoning from only eating the fries here. Thank goodness they closed early without warning or I would of gotten sick as well. I came here purely out of chance bc I was on jury duty and not much around to get excited over. so I see this what looked like a typical Peruvian chicken spot and when I got closer looks more like a budding franchise. They had a nice array of different Spanish dishes fried chicken of course and grilled as well. I went with the grilled chicken with a side of yuca fries (which were made fresh not frozen ) and I was very impressed with the chicken full of flavor not dry at all and the guava juice was very good not too sweet. I decided that there was no point in me holding a grudge against my local Campero store, where they treat me like a queen EVERY TIME I order which is way more often than ever (!) in spite of the behavior of Campero's corporate offices toward me (See further below about that).. The food is so good that I couldn't resist going back! It is even better than before! Last week, Yessenia, the Jamaica Store manager delivered my food to me herself and remembered me from when I visited the store at which time she prepared my order herself (with a smile and TLC (Tender Loving Care!) because she thought that the other staff were taking too long to do so! When Yessenia delivered my food last week, I gave her a beautiful white rose, for friendship, out of a lovely bouquet of red and white roses that I had bought that day. She hugged me in thanks. Also, I believe that like my roses that I kept, hers must have bloomed and opened even more beautifully as has my relationship with ALL Campero staff at my local Jamaica store, for which I am VERY gratified! Finally, in this vein, although I don't know why your headquarters staff treated me as they did, although I believe it was because they envy the range of my accomplishments and abilities as most people do, I believe that I am at least partly responsible if I inspire such behavior in others. May I know what I did to deserve you turning down trying even once my obviously excellent consulting services, the price for which also seemed right to me, and which consultations I've been repeatedly giving you for free in these surveys and on your Facebook page and for which your HQ staff praised the usefulness of very highly? Again, I think your HQ staff's behavior toward me was highly unfair. But thanks anyway, and your Jamaica, Queens, NY Store has won my heart completely in their behavior toward me, as I believe I have won theirs! I hope this finds you having a pleasant day! I tried this place one day because I was waiting for the bus across the street from it and realized that I was hungry abd didn't have anything at home that I wanted. I got a combo I think it was 6.99 came with a quarter chicken either grilled or fried, two sides dinner roll and a soda. The chicken is supposed to be Peruvian style. The flavor was just ok. What I didn't like was the texture. It was rubbery. I got the vegetable rice and the coleslaw with it. The rice was good, a good flavor and cooked correctly. The coleslaw would have been good if it wasn't too salty. I'm used to my coleslaw having a little bit of tang & sweetness. It was fresh though at least, so was the roll. They have some hot sauces on the side that are pretty good & add flavor. I guess for 6.99 you can't go wrong. Maybe the chicken will be better next time. Let me start by saying that they've done a soft opening. I believe their grand opening is the first week of June. That being said, they currently need work on their operations. Long wait times and wrong orders should be fixed immediately. As for the chicken, it was tasty with the green sauce. However, the size of the pieces were smaller than I had hoped.
