I have grown up eating at pollards. They have great food, so I'm sure your wondering what's up with this one star review. My husband and I ordered food to take to a friends for the super bowl, when I went in the young girl walked away from the front counter without greeting me to her cell phone that was on the ice machine. After about 2 minutes which felt like a lifetime she came back... no greeting and asked me what I wanted. After telling her I had a Togo order she seemed confused and asked me the name it was under after telling her she said she didn't have my order. To make a long story shorter... she made no effort to help find my order even after telling her what we had ordered. Come to find out she had put it under the wrong name. She had an extremely horrible attitude the entire time, at no time in my visit did she say please or thank you, she was not accommodating and it put me in a really bad mood. This absolutely ruined my experience here, I will be staying away until they make some major staff changes, she was obviously under someone's supervision which is even worse that they allowed this behavior. read more

Thought I'd try Pollards since I was hanging out in Norfolk. I had the three piece dark with baked beans, tater salad, and two puffs. Once my food came out it was delicious. The chicken was seasoned good with a lighter coating than KFC or Popeyes. The sides were good too. Overall I thought this hometown chicken joint is worth another visit. read more

Ever since living in Atlanta five years ago, I've had a hankering for Southern food. I saw this place after moving to Norfolk and knew that I had to try it. Let's just say I was not disappointed! My husband and I ordered one of their value meals for $5.50; it came with two pieces of dark meat chicken (extra for white), vegetable, puff, and drink. We both got fried okra, which was the only slightly irritating thing for me since there is an extra charge for ordering the okra (really?). The fried chicken was so good, and the puff was delicious as well. Make sure to add the honey to it for that extra special melt in your mouth flavor. Just ordered a 12 piece and substituted breasts for wings on the order and paid for it. Drove home, opened the chicken, there were NO breasts at all in the order. So I called Pollards to let them know, they said to bring the entire order back and they would give me a refund or give me the chicken. we were all starving and the manager of the store was rude, and the General Manager wasn't rude but offered little assistance in resolving our issue. I was warmly greeted upon arrival and they were very patient while I scoured the menu since this was my first visit. I chose the 2 piece snack meal with okra. Always fresh and always friendly. This restaurant is a real treat. Right from the get go you have friendly faces welcoming you in. The food is always hot and never old. Some times you may have to wait for the food, but it's definitely worth the wait. They have many options of sides. They also serve chicken (obviously) and fish in many different ways. This place is the real deal! First time customer and from the time I opened the door I was impressed. The aroma of fried chicken is immediate and gets your stomach rumbling. Stopped in for a late lunch with the family. It was a good time as it wasn't too busy. I ordered a 2 piece fried chicken meal (dark meat) with puff, cinnamon apples, mashed potatoes & gravy. My husband ordered a 4 piece fried chicken meal (white meat, extra charge) to split with one of my sons, with puff, fries, mac & cheese. My other son had chicken strips. They had fountain drinks and some bottled drinks. As other reviews said, the chicken is cooked to order so we waited a little while. Our food was brought out by the same girl who took our order, she was very friendly and helpful. Everything was hot, especially the chicken and puffs, so we had the kids wait a minute so they wouldn't get burned. The chicken was delicious! Nice and crisp breaded outside and juicy on the inside. The strips were great, very tender and juicy inside, but I preferred the regular fried chicken - it's messier to eat but has more flavor. The cinnamon apples were good (my son ate most of mine but I got a couple). The mac & cheese was okay, nothing special. The puffs were yummy as only hot fried dough can be. I wish they had butter and real honey instead of the packet syrup honey that is mostly corn syrup, but they were still good. The mashed potatoes and gravy were okay. A little bland but it was balanced by the crisp salty chicken. After we got our food it started to get busier, then one of the workers announced they had a large church order in so there would be a delay after that. Next time we might call ahead or go at an off peak time again to avoid a long wait. I guess we were lucky and came at a slow time. The bathrooms were a bit run down, like the rest of the restaurant, but seemed clean. Lots of parking. Tried Pollard's for the first time since living here for 8 years. The girls are the register were really sweet. The chicken was ok, not bad but def not the best I've tasted given that this place has so much hype behind it. Prices good also but nobody cared for the puff things and would have rather had biscuits which I didn't see on menu. They initially forgot my puffs so I had to drive back to get them, if I knew what they were and tasted like I would have just said forget it. Worst customer experience I truly have ever had. Called in my order and was told it would take 15 minutes. I arrived 20 minutes later and paid for the order. The girl processing my card apparently charged 0.16 cents to it instead of $16.54. After a couple of minutes fumbling around with the register she asked if I had another card since she couldn't figure out how to ring it up again on the same card. After this ordeal she quickly ran to the back and i sat down assuming my order was not ready. After 45 minutes of waiting and seeing newer people arrive, order, and leave with food I then asked for an update. Apparently my order had been sitting behind the counter the whole time. I'm not giving it a 1 star bc of their food, but bc of a rude manager name Renee. This chick has no mannerism and really needs to be retrained on how to talk and deal with people. She need to take notes on the her fellow staff members and other manager name Antonio who is great with communication, professional, mannerism on point, and customer service is outstanding. Wow, where do I start? So we have seen signs all over the area about how Pollard's has the best chicken in Hampton Roads and we finally made time to go in. First things first, it was $20 for both our meals with drinks so it better be delicious! I got chicken tenders, my husband got a 2 piece meal. Disappointed doesn't even cover it. The tenders were soggy and frankly, nothing special. The same could be said about my husband's chicken. I ordered macaroni and cheese, it was just generic macaroni and cheese. My husband got fried okra and mashed potatoes. The gravy on the mashed potatoes literally smelled and tasted like condensed Campbell's soup. He said the fried okra was acceptable. The worse part, was my second side. Corn. Like... How can corn get screwed up, right? Idk if it's the heat lamps or the way they store them or the preparation method or what, but the corn literally tasted like nothing. Like I made my husband try it to make sure I wasn't going crazy, it was like eating fake corn on the cob. I really don't understand how this mediocre establishment is considered best of anything. I visited the Pollard's Chicken on Tidewater Drive a couple of Saturday's ago with my mom,brother, and girlfriend and while I was pleased with the food, the lack of maturity and professionalism needs to be worked on. As soon as we all walked in, it was quiet and then a loud burst of laughter coming from the back and then stares. It definitely makes me rethink ever revisiting this establishment again due to the uncomfortableness we all felt. I had fried chicken with 'collard greens' & macaroni. I visited because I was told by a friend that this was a souls food spot and that it probably the reason I expected much more. Macaroni and cheese was gross. It was baked like I expected. It was normal yucky fast food macaroni. My collards were like spinach which I don't eat so I didn't eat these either. The chicken was okay and I ate two of the wings and ended up throwing away the third wing with the rest of the food. Even my sweet test tasted funny. I know this may sound weird but it tasted dirty like maybe they don't ever clean their tea urns. Needless to say it was a waste of money for me and I won't be going back. I went to get there two piece chicken lunch special with a side of mac and cheese, and there little puffs. Where I'm from we call those puffs ( johnny cakes). But they were pretty good.
