Poke Dot - Another Pokinometry wanna be. Same concept. Same price as all the other Poke places. Same parking problems as Pokinometry. Same long line as Pokinometry, actually, the line here may longer because people who work in Irvine have no where to go for Poke except for this place. Pick you base, pick your protein, pick your sauce, and pick you toppings. In addition to the usual toppings that everyone offers, they also offer cilantro, jalapenos, and tempura crumbs as toppings. I wasn't impressed with the bowl they made for me. The tuna was pink. It just didn't look right. The fish was full of sinew. Their scoops of fish is smaller than the other poke places I've been to. Their original spicy sauce bordered on having no taste, but, it tasted a lot better when I added soy sauce to it. Where was the spice in my spicy sauce? Too bad they aren't the same. The idea of being a copycat was good. But, I'd rather go to the original. read more

Let's be honest - this poke trend is here to stay as new places are just opening up throughout SoCal. Nevertheless, my eyes still sparkled when I saw this new place so close in my area, making it easy to get my poke fix or even just a quick lunch/dinner if I'm feeling lazy. Just under $10 for the medium size, so not bad for Irvine/Newport! By now, you know the drill of these Chipotle-style bowls that give you so many ways to customize to your liking. I ordered mine to be Half & Half (Salad and Brown RIce) with 3 scoops of fish. I had my default mix - spicy tuna, salmon, and yellowtail - along with cucumber, imitation crab meat, onion, and avocado and toppings like sesame seeds, seaweed flakes, masago, and green onion, in which ALL of this was included in the base cost (awwww yeeee!!!) I opted for the medium spicy, and although it tasted more like mild to me, I was content with that level so that I can actually taste the fish without it being drenched in sauce. FYI, the spicy mayo actually does pack some heat, so don't get caught off-guard! Brown rice could be cooked a little better - a little on the dry side, but not a dealbreaker for me. The medium size left me pretty content and stuffed, but not to the extent of a full-blown food baby. The fish was decently fresh for what you pay for and the service was really friendly. It's one of the few places still open "late" aka after 6pm, so it doesn't only cater to corporate business hours like its neighbors, Croutons and Flame Broiler. When I come back next time, I'll definitely try the Wrap instead of a bowl and see how it compares to Sushirrito in NorCal :) Off to continue on my poke adventure...! read more

Similar to many poke places but they have big pieces of fish! They didn't give very much of the toppings such as imitation crab and masago, which most poke places usually give a good amount! Another thing, many other places give you a LOT of rice if you order the large portion but they gave the same amount of rice for both regular and large. Not bad not bad. Think of like a Chipotle meets poke. Comparable to Calipoke in the The Lab in Costa Mesa. Same concept... pick your style: big bowl (~$10), small bowl (~$8), or wrap (~$8), pick your rice, salad, or combination of both, pick your seafood, and lastly pick your toppings and sauces. Guac doesn't cost extra! Yay! Line was relatively long when we showed up at 1:15pm on a warm Thursday afternoon, BUT it does move quite swiftly so don't get discouraged from giving it a try! So why only 3 stars? I think quality of poke isn't quite up to par with a Bear Flag Fish Co. or Calipoke. Portions are a tad smaller as well if my memory serves me right. Either way not bad and a great addition to this corporate plaza... Can't complain too much. If dining outside, beware of birds. They will try and swipe at your freshly made bowl if not looking. 3.5 stars I was holding off on this review until I tried another poke place in order to have an accurate comparison. I've been going to this place for the past 1.5 years but after trying Uroko this past weekend...I'm going to have to vote for Uroko Cafe. PARKING: Plenty of parking spots in the front and the back. SERVICE: Quick! I've been here during the lunch hour and the line is long but it moves quickly. FOOD: The comparison to Uroko is centered on this section. I remember the quality of the fish at Poke Dot was better back in the day. I usually order Salmon and Tuna - they are cut in HUGE chunks. Would like it in smaller cubes to have more fish in my bites. Uroko is more generous in their portions for both their sides and scoop of fish. I legit weighed my Uroko Bowl because my first reaction was OMG this is heavy - check out my Uroko review for the pics! I was very excited to try and I stated it was my first time there, but hardly any response or helpful insight was given from the 2 girls behind the counter. Like so many of these places popping up all around wanted to get in and give this place a try. Located in the corner of the shopping center it's in but what I like best about it is how close it is to the airport. I have stopped d by here now a few times either coming or going.... Food here is very good and what makes any poke is fresh fish and a good selection of other toppings. On my visit I had the large salad as my base with all tuna and salmon topped it off with some cucumbers, carrots, edamame, ginger, and some of their sauces. Very good! Poke Dot is located near John Wayne airport in the "Square" plaza. I got a medium bowl (3 scoops) for $8.75 which is a bit cheaper compared to other poke places. I got salmon, tuna, and yellowtail with brown rice and all the toppings. The fish was fresh and I liked the toppings such as the tempura flakes, avocado, and crab meat. It was a filling bowl, although mostly because of the amount of rice. They gave too much rice and too little fish. Also, my friend didn't like their rice, he thought it was below average compared to other poke places. With so many poke places around the area, I would rather go to them instead. In retrospect, it's a great poke place if you're looking for poke nearby, but if you don't mind driving a bit farther, there are better poke places than Poke Dot. read more

I have never been to a pokey place, so this is the first time and yes I'm popping my cherry. I have to say I didn't know what to expect or how to actually order these pokey balls. I looked around and try to see what other people were doing and they were staring up at the menu. There is an order process and how this is done and the people putting it together actually help you through as well. So you get to choose from rice or salad then you get to choose do you want crab on it, do you want avocado, and then you choose your proteins, then you choose your sides your sauces and when it's all said and done you have this amazing healthy bowl of stuff! It is very filling, and the portions are quite large! I was surprised at how much I tried to eat and the little dent that I made! This place is clean, orderly, and fast. There is outside seating to enjoy the weather and inside tables if you're a vampire. The best part of this was the cooler of Hawaiian juices to choose from. I'm from Hawaii so I was super pumped! There are so many poke restaurants around southern california now and Poke Dot is not that different from the others. I chose to eat here on a Friday afternoon during lunch time and boy, there was a wait! It's located around some office buildings and of course, it's a newer restaurant around here, so the line extended out the doors into the patio area. Environment - Once you walk in you'd notice there are a lot of sealife drawings painted on the walls; I think this added a very nice touch to the place.. a bit homey. The counter where you order starts to the left of the restaurant where you then will walk down and tell the poke makers what you would like in your order. There's a substantial amount of seating indoors but if you'd like to opt for the fresh air outside, there are so many tables to choose from out there. Service - there's nothing to complain about here.in terms of service. The workers are very nice and no one was abruptly rude.. yay! The service is pretty fast so that means although there's a long line for lunch, you'll be out of there is 15 minutes top. Food - I don't think there's anything that stands out at Poke Dot. I saw that a lot of people got rice with the poke and here, they really load up on your rice. So I guess that's worth it if you really want rice with your fish. I, on the other hand, don't really like to eat rice with my poke because it takes away the flavor and enjoyment of the fish. I usually get a salad because it's a lighter alternative to rice. You can also get half rice and half salad too, which I would recommend if you're a bit hungrier. The large is not that much more from the regular... I love salmon so I got 3 scoops salmon and 2 scoops tuna. Sizes: - Large (5 sccops fish) $10.75 - Regular (3 scoops) $8.75 - Small (2 scoops) $7.50 All in all, I think that if you've had Pokenometry or Bear Flag, then you're good to go in your poke life. Poke Dot is my favorite poke spot in Irvine! I come here pretty often so I know that they're consistent with their quality. The protein is always fresh, the sauces are pretty good ( I like mixing House medium with spicy mayo), and the toppings are standard so they always have what you'd want in a poke bowl. Another thing I love is that they don't charge extra for avocado! Also, the staff are always really friendly ! This place is pretty new which I guess is why the line was super long. Words of the wise: you will need at least half an hour in store so plan accordingly. People also take orders for their coworkers and friends so it's not one bowl per person which takes longer. However, I think for the amount of people coming, their service was really good. It's located on MacArthur right near the airport in the complex that has a bunch of other restaurants as well. It's a great location for the business around and for UCI students since it's close by. There is ample parking as well! When I first saw the line I almost ended up going to the noodle place next door. But the line went relatively quickly. It's a normal Poké place. I would argue it's slightly cheaper. The regular size was pretty big and filled me up for lunch but they also have a large where you can have five scoops of protein. The fish was pretty fresh especially the yellowtail! I normally LOVE salmon but after eating the yellowtail, I really wasn't feeling it with the salmon. It had so much flavor. But it's seasonal so I'm not sure how long it'll be there for. They have both brown and white rice. And I like that they have a lot of spicy options. One thing I had never tried with my Poké bowls was avocado. I love avocado but I think in this case, it definitely made the bowl a lot heavier in appetite for me. I also thought the "crab" meat was a bit too sweet for my liking but I never liked crab meat much anyway. I tried the spicy mayo sauce but next time I'm going to try the cilantro twist. Overall, the food items were all really fresh and I was pleased with them. I'm definitely going to come back here with my friends and I recommend it for anyone who wants to satisfy their Poké cravings! read more

I've been here twice for lunch; first time during the weekday, second time on a saturday. The line is super long during weekday lunch time from all the business people and parking in the Plaza is a bit limited although I was able to find parking fairly quickly. The weekend is definitely a better time to go if you don't want to wait in line. The regular sized portion is definitely more than enough to fill a regular eater up, especially if you get any rice. The fish scoops are pretty much the same ares other poke places and they include crab meat, avocado, and masago for free along with other toppings which is nice since some other places will charge extra for those 3 toppings. One problem with poke places is that they tend to over sauce. I think Pokedot is a little better on that front than pokiometry, but i think I will still opt to get the sauce on the side next time. read more

Disappointed. Every time I come here, the portion gets smaller and smaller. Three pieces of tuna, I tsp of spicy tuna, a couple tablespoons of rice and a sprinkle of about 4-5 toppings made the small bowl come up to half of the bowl. 15$ for this? Never again. This is taking advantage of people just like the rental market is doing. Shame on you. read more
