Nobody is ever going to confuse Pok-E-Jo's with Kreuz or Franklin or even The Salt Lick, but it can be very good if you don't go in and order like you're at a meat market. Don't order meat by the pound, or even a 2/3-meat plate. Go for the sandwiches, some sides (a lot more varied than just your normal beans/cole slaw/potato salad), and a dessert if you save room. read more

Got the Thursday lunch special -- Turkey + 2 sides. Added drink. With mandatory tip it cost $14!!! Turkey was average. No way this was a $14 meal. And let's talk about that tip for a moment. I pushed my own tray through the line, carried it to a table that I had to clean before I sat down, got my own drink and refills, and cleaned up my tray when I was done. Why are restaurants making patrons feel like a tip is necessary by putting the tip line on the credit card receipt? If cafeteria style restaurants want a tip, put a jar by the door and I'll tip on the service I received or did not receive while eating. read more

I don't think I have ever received such exceptional customer service. I called in a order for my co-workers (it was a very difficult order). When I got there there was a man Matt at a desk doing paperwork and a few people in the line ordering. I didn't know if there was a pick up line, as he saw me looking lost, he stopped what he was doing to help me. I asked him if there was a pick up line and he said that he would grab everything for me. It wasn't quite ready so he helped me get all the drinks from the fountain, he got me a drink holder, loaded them up made sure to get me condiments and extra sides. From the outside it looks like nothin special, the inside decor is really neat. You feel like you're at a Texas BBQ. You grab a tray, and go through the line cafeteria style, and then pay at the end. I tried the turkey and brisket. I wasn't too keen on the BBQ sauce, not my style. I enjoyed my side of cheesy mashed potato casserole more than I enjoyed the meat. My coworkers and I go there all of the time. I don't get what all of the hate is all about. I think the BBQ here is quite decent tasting. I usually get the pork ribs, turkey, jalapeno sausage, and brisket. I like to get the fried okra as my side (not to everyone's taste I understand) and chocolate pudding, which altogether make up a complete and nutritious lunch. A.k.a. lunch for champions. I like this place. It's close to work and the prices are reasonable. I had the 3 meat platter with green bean casserole and mac and cheese with texas toast. For the meats I chose moist brisket, sausage and ribs. All were good and tender. Nice size serving portions -they didn't skimp on the amount. Nice decor and clean. This is the same price point as Rudy's but less crowded during lunch. Serving sizes are a little larger for what you pay though - heaping sides + more meat. I can't say much for the brisket or sausage (meh is about all I'll say), but the turkey was absolutely fabulous. Very moist, and very flavorful. Sides are a hit or miss. If you want some cheesy potato-ey goodness, definitely get the baked potato casserole. It's carb heaven. The green bean casserole is alright - it's not as creamy or tasty as the version I make myself. Coleslaw was bland and unmentionable. I would not order it again. I was a fan of the broccoli salad for some reason - maybe I was just craving something light, sweet, and vinegary, but it hit the spot that day. I don't know if I would be back if I wanted some serious brisket, ribs, or sausage grubbing, but I would hands down be back for some turkey. read more

I love this place. The food is generally fresh, tasty and the staff is so nice. The catering team is fabulous, I have called them for work events and they are more than responsive to your needs, they are lovely. The 3 stars is for my 4 sides dinner from last night. I was there right before 7PM (2 hours before closing) and the sides were all dried out like they had been sitting since lunch. Now lunch is a different story. I have bought lunch for my team and every side tastes like it was made just for me. I'm guessing that everything is made early in the day and perhaps dries out during the day. Worst food ever. We ordered a huge order for our office. It took over 2 hours to have it delivered, they didn't get our order correct, left about half the food we ordered off what they actually delivered and when they brought it back they didn't offer a discount off our next order or anything just some cookies. :/ The "vegetables" with the plate ordered consisted of greasy bell peppers, squash, and onions. That is not a vegetable side. The fries were undercooked, flaccid potato strips, and the chicken strips were so overcooked they were almost burnt and they were hard as a rock. My co-workers said the brisket was good, but the pulled pork was unimpressive. This place sure makes me glad I live in San Antonio so I can get Bil! Millers! Pok-e-Jo's catered my wedding this past month, and I am so glad that we decided to go with them! We had a fairly large wedding (270 guests) and the Pok-e-Jo's catering staff handled it without a hitch. The food was DELICIOUS- our guests couldn't stop raving about it! For cocktail hour, we had their Texas White Wings passed around on trays and well as the Chef's Table. For dinner, we had brisket and turkey along with mac n' cheese, pinto beans, salad, and baked potato casserole. To. Die. For. Alexis (one of their wedding catering coordinators) was amazing to work with. She was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and helpful. We wanted to "flip" the venue and have the reception in the same spot as the ceremony, and many other catering companies had stared at us blankly or freaked out when we mentioned this. Alexis didn't even bat an eye and worked closely with my amazing planner (Kathlee Akers of Beau Tied Events) to make it happen. Alexis even suggested doing a venue walk through with me to help figure out the best placement for the food and guest tables. We must have sent hundreds of emails back and forth talking about all the details, and she would always reply quickly and without complaint. I met with her three times in person- once for the tasting (which was amazing), once at the venue before hand, and once the week of to go over last minute details. So impressed by the amount of time she spent working with me! Loved Pok-e-Jo's! Go with them- you won't regret it. I've been coming here for years, and love, love, love the variety they have. My usual favorites are the pulled pork and lean brisket. For sides, they have the best cheesy potato casserole and black bean pico. Today, I overhead them say there was a new recipe for the banana pudding, so I tried it. It was AMAZING! Not that the original recipe tasted bad, but they now have a homemade recipe to get rid of the trans-fats in the original. Good move! I'll order it again. read more

Great assortment of sides and meats, I typically go on Friday and get the half bbq chicken plate which is the special and it's delicious! Creamy mac and cheese is always good and the slaw is crisp and fresh. I came here wanting To see what the hype was about. Unfortunately the brisket tasted as though it was cooked in oven. No smoked flavor at all. On top of that the mash potatoes were cold as well as the macaroni and cheese. The pork rib was good. But the green bean casserole was nasty. The sweet tea wasn't even sweet. All the meat is very good - but best bbq turkey I have found anywhere. The cornbread casserole rocks and the beans are not standard - they are yummy! (really) Reasonable prices, too! If you need catering for your office or anywhere I highly recommend them. Have been using them for years and they never let you down or make you look bad for using them. On time, all the food is there, it's wrapped very well so it's hot and it doesn't spill. Want something a little different than bbq? They will work with you and come up with something for you. This is not just your normal BBQ restaurant, they have awesome chef salads, baked spuds and top notch customer service. I am not one for leaving reviews, but after my families experience last night, I could not pass it up. From the line chefs that are making your salad, to giving us free drinks because we forgot to order one when we paid.
