Pok-E-Jo's is definitely A-OK. My favorite of the meats is the sausage, soft and juicy. The turkey is pretty good, brisket is my least favorite, but not bad. The sides are great. Corn, Mac and Cheese, Beans. I have tried some of the others, casseroles and okra ...those are pretty good too. $31.99 for family pack: 2 lbs of meat and 3 big cups of sides. I keep forgetting about Pok-E-Jo's. They have some capable BBQ and an assortment of sides you don't always see. They fry the okra to order too. Top it off with a pickle bar and you've got something. Why three stars? It's kind of expensive. The freshly fried okra can still be a little dicey. The brisket is good, but not great. And they took pickled okra off the pickle bar. In case you don't know, I love okra. But if you're looking for somewhere you can get in, get a plate, and get to eating lunch, this is it. We did our wedding catering with Poke E Jo's last year and we got nothing but compliments about the food. We didn't have a chance to really enjoy the food. We were the center of attention and had to focus on photos and speaking to everyone. We wished we could've done really savor the food. The catering did an amazing job delivering the food. We both reminisced our wedding and talked about trying the food again. So we decided to show up again a year later to celebrate our anniversary and to relive memories by having the food from our wedding. The gentleman on September 29, 2020 around 7:45pm-8pm was very professional and took care of us to help us celebrate our moment. It made us feel special and we appreciated the above and beyond service. He deserves more recognition and a raise for his prompt and amazing service. Delish down home Texas BBQ! The dry rub on the ribs is just right, spicy but not over the top. The chicken is moist, tender and again, just enough spicy rub to make it mouth watering. I ordered the "big" sandwich,, what a rip off! About a half a link of the worst tasting sausage I've ever tried to eat,, the dog ended up with it. The potato salad, no flavor, no seasoning. I don't understand 42.00 for junk barbecue. If these businesses want to stay in business, i highly recommend they reassess what they are presenting to the people, especially right now when we are all stretching our finances as far as we can, but, trying to be supportive at the same time. In Austin, and everywhere we looked seemed to be a fast-food chain I asked a coworker to take us for some BBQ Texas style. He said he knew a great no frills place, but with a good BBQ selection, and it would be a good lunch meal. We get to Pok-E-Jo's and it's totally cheesy with all the random Southern chotskies from old license plates, to a toy train that motors around the top parameter of the restaurant with sponge bob as the conductor, it's rather amusing. You walk in and it's a cafeteria style, where you walk up to the "lunch ladies Or men" behind the glass and you point and ask for what you want. I decided on the Brisket, it looked rather juicy and like it would hit the spot. I had the sandwich and it was awesome! totally juicy, just enough brisket meat, and a side of macaroni! It was a definitely a Texas style meal, with it's 50oz cups! Haha! Literally these were monstrosity size cups for beverages. And overall it was a great price, all under $15. read more

I don't mind barbecue, I've just never felt the need to drive to Driftwood or Lockhart to eat it; and since the only thing I like to do at gas stations is buy gas, I'll concede I'm missing out on some really great barbecue from places I always hear about. With that said, I dutifully take visitors and prospective in-laws to either of the two County Lines in Austin, because it's the law. But for my own personal bbq fix every now and then, I come to this Pok-E-Jo's. I don't know the story about this company, but I miss the 5th Street location, I haven't been to the Parmer Lane place, but their Brodie Oaks location is larger and a tad more comfy for me than the Arboretum one. The bbq has been good for me at both Pokes. Apparently there are Round Rock and Hancock Center locations as well. Cool. If I'm low-carbing, it's brisket and onions--life is good. If I'm being normal, Poke does an exquisite made-to-order fried okra I enjoy, and their broccoli salad is scintillating. Banana pudding and sweet tea. Ummmm. All things considered, I don't know--driving outside of Austin to eat bbq strikes me as driving to Waco or San Antonio to catch a plane. If it's worth it to you, go for it. This is our go-to place for some take-out hot BBQ action. We typically order the same or similar things all the time and each time everything is pretty consistent. We'll do take out from here when we have a friend or two over and order the family pack with brisket and sausage. The brisket is good- not the best, but good. The sausage is definitely flavorful and always the first thing to disappear in our little styrofoam container. For our sides (for the meal deal, you get 3 pints), we usually get a mix of: -Macaroni and cheese (Good, kind of standard and not very WOWing) -Baked Potato Casserole (Very yummy!) -Baked Beans (Depends usually on how much extra pieces of meat show up in it) -Green Bean Casserole (Very creamy, but could use a few more crunchy onions) -Banana Pudding (Sometimes disappears before we're done with everything else) The amount you get is pretty good for the amount of meat- although sometimes we'll get more of something if we know it will go pretty fast. You also get a half a loaf of bread that you're definitely not going to eat in one sitting, so you can make yourself a sandwhich later. And the last thing- the sauce. The mild sauce is very sweet and good for a wide range of taste preferences. The spicy sauce is a more kicking version than the mild. It doesn't pack an "OH MY GOD MY MOUTH IS ON FIRE!" type of punch, but more of a "Oooh, that was hot, but yummy" kind of kick. I recommend getting a cup of each. Overall, very delightful food. I was kind of suprised, because Pok-E-Jo's had a veggie plate. It included four sides, and the nice girl behind the counter also said that a soda could count if i only wanted three sides. I tried the macaroni and cheese, and split some potato salad with my husband. I also got some fruit salad. She was really great to suggest all the nonmeat options. My husband had a combo #1 of which he is a fan, but I forgot what kind of meat he got. It was quick, which was exactly what we needed, and surprisingly okay for me. Thanks, Pok-E! I also ate here once for a rehearsal dinner. Their brisket leaves a lot to be desired - it's like it was cooked at too high of a temp, too quickly. The meat isn't as tender as it should be and the fat hasn't rendered, so it's still chewy. Pork Ribs and Turkey were decent. I found sausage to be their best meat. Good BBQ Sauce, pickles and onions. The sides I've had ranged from barely OK to not at all good. These guys are off my list unless it's simply a matter of convenience and sausage will hit the spot... read more

Okay i ordered a SLICED briscuit, moist cut and received this pictured pile. Ground off burned end pieces that were unchewable. When i explained my dissatisfaction and even demostrated by pulling apart tough burned shredded bits i was met with rudeness. Asked for a replacement and the manager was summoned. He wanted me to justify my dissatisfaction. I told him to just look at the sandwich. He didnt see anything wrong with the quality of his product. Sad! He sullenly slapped down a refund, shorting me a dollar. This is where it got funny. When i objected to being shorted he said that was what the sandwich was worth so i spread the money out and asked him to count again. Is it ever a good idea to argue BBQ in Texas? Probably not, but I'll attempt to anyway. I have a theory on BBQ restaurants which basically goes like this: Every BBQ restaurant cooks many types of meat (brisket, sausage, ribs, etc.), but very few can do many types of meats well. For example, if you want good brisket, you go to Rudy's. If you want good sausage, you go to Lockhart or Elgin. Well, Pok-E-Jo's does none of that extremely well, but they do a good job in just being slightly above average. The brisket is good but not great. The same can be said for the sausage. If you're just really craving some BBQ, I would recommend it. It's quick, reasonably priced, and this location hardly has a wait. The food is perfectly acceptable--it's just not the best BBQ you'll ever have. read more

I feel like I'm in the middle of a bad joke. I go into poke jo's with my daughter to have lunch today. She gets her plate and moves on down the line. I order a double meat brisket plate. The guy cutting the meat asks me to repeat myself and I say, "The brisket, moist." He says ok and cuts the meat. I step over to the next station to order my sides and the girl tells me two options I've never heard before. I ask her if the plate has changed and she replies no that the sandwich plate has always been that way. I smirk and say that I didn't order a sandwich. She then turns to the guy cutting meat and tells him. He looks at me and I say that I ordered the brisket plate. He then decides to start arguing with me saying that I ordered the number 2. He then mutters something unintelligible under his breath. I say that I did not even say a number while ordering and he continues to mutter then tells me that I did order the number 2. I just stand there staring at him wondering why he's making a huge deal out of it and he mutters something else about the number 2 vs plates. That's when I decided to leave. It isn't Franklins or any of the other big names in Ausitn, but boy, is this place dependable. First, you never have to wade through long lines or crowds of people to get your meal and get seated. Second, they have absolutely massive drink cups (to-go and dine in), which fuel hydration and make you forget the hassle of leaving your seat in the middle of a delicious, messy bbq meal. Third, they have really reasonable prices. Fourth, I am a huge sucker for their disgustingly creamy mac and cheese and their killer green bean casserole for sides. Fifth, their meat is great. The brisket makes for an incredibly solid sandwich, and their turkey made for the best home-cooked meal replacement I have ever had on a Thanksgiving away from home. Way, way better than I'd ever have expected. Your standard Texas meats and sides offered here competently and quickly, at reasonable prices. No, nothing here is going to win any state awards and I suspect this place isn't even on the cool radar of Austin's hipster squad. The brisket, turkey, and ribs all were enjoyable and really no complaints about them. The sides though were above-average and ...wow that is some serious mac'n'cheese....definitely needed a sunday nap after that. I did have an issue with the banana pudding -- whoo, someone got a bit too feisty with the vanilla flavoring. But the best thing is -- we were warmly greeted by a staff who genuinely seemed to want to help us and made sure to stop by and check on us. That sort of service is increasingly rare here. This place is great. It was our first time here. We ordered the Five Pack to go with brisket, pork loin, & sausage and the casseroles as sides, plus mac & cheese, and beans. With tip, it was close to $70. And we placed the order online in advance--ordered at 3 to be picked up at 5. When we arrived, I ran in to get it, and it hadn't been made. A tall guy behind the counter (kind of looked like the manager, but who knows) said it'll be a second, they accidentally gave me turkey instead of brisket but then I watched him put my entire order together right in front of me. Poor guy, I bet he hoped I wouldn't notice. I can understand how it would be easy to forget an order that was placed hours in advanced. Anyway. The funny part was when we got home. The 30+ lbs of food came in a large paper bag and my husband the genius thought it made sense to hold the bag by its two tiny string handles. Naturally, the bottom gave way and our food spilled out all over the driveway. He started cussing up a storm, cursing Pok-e-Jo's, saying it was all their fault and that he should sue. I tried so hard not to laugh because he was really furious. But I mean, come on, it was totally his fault. So a warning to all: don't do what my husband did! Use common sense! My husband and I wanted something to fill us up for lunch. We wanted to try something new. This is was our first time eating there. We had to take a few minutes to figure out what to order. We ended up ordering a 2 meat plate each $9.99, that comes with 2 sides and Texas toast. I got the moist brisket and beef sausage, Mac n cheese, potato salad. The guy cutting the meat was super nice and the guy who was on sides was great too. They gave me 2 sample sides: Broccoli/rice casserole, baked potato. Hubby got moist brisket and pulled pork. He said pulled pork was a tad dry, but he stole some of my beef sausage. He loved it. Mac-n-cheese was actually really good. It was cheesy and never dried out. Did a corporate event and wanted some BBQ for the meal. E-mailed the Pok-E-Jo's catering e-mail posted on their website catering@pokejos.com. Within 1 business day was provided a copy of their catering menu. We went with the 2 meat BBQ buffet. Was a great hit and tasted very good! There is a minimum of 15 people for delivery, and for less than 15 people you'll have to go to the store and pick up the food. We did pick up and was very impressed. They had all the food packed neatly, sealed, and in boxes. Had no spills or issues during transit, and they even loaded the food into the vehicle for us. Plus our event started at 11:00am, so they worked with us to allow us to get the food before the store opened at 11:00am. Was even more pleased to see that provided ice, sweeter, and lemons for the tea. Also provided the cute red and white checker table cloth and spoon utensils. Was a quick set up and clean up. Which is saying something for BBQ ;). There was plenty of food and it tasted great! We will definitely consider Pok-E-Jo's in the future. Thank you! read more

Had the food catered for a business event. From a quality stand point, I would give it excellent rating. The brisket is so tender, where you have no need to exercise your knife's rights! The sausage is as flavorful and tender. To top that, I give the peach cobbler excellent rating as well. This is due to its "just right" sweetness level. I am a big fan of the smoked meat. That being said, the only thing that brings me back here is the convenience. It's about a 2 miles closer to my office than the Rudys BBQ that lies just up 360. If I'm with someone else we'll definitely take the trouble to go up to Rudys. If I just want something to eat at my desk -- Pok-e-jo's will do. It's not that the food is bad. if it was bad it couldn't have survived that long in this town. But I find most of the meats a little lacking in good smokey flavor. I'm not sure what wood they use to smoke their meats -- but it doesn't appear to be very effective. I will say that the meat does tend to have an appropriate amount of moisture --depending on your cut. Ordering the brisket, the friendly fellow behind the counter always asks whether you want 'extra moist' (i.e. fatty), 'extra lean,' or 'a lot of both.' The smoked turkey and pork loins are decent, too, if you are into that. The sides are rather typical, sad traditional bbq -- overly cooked, overly prepared (i.e. salad or fruits drowning in sauce). They do have a few crazy delicious originals -- like their cornbread side and some of the desserts. read more
