After I secured free street parking on a Sunday morning, I went to my go to place for meats and was caught off guard when the staff told me they were sold out on what I asked for. They did have local spareribs but with our previous experience we found these spareribs to have excess bones and the meat quality not as good. I found myself going to other back up places only to find out the sparerib prices are 17% to 30% higher. I was tasked to pick up over 5 lbs so to keep my cost low, I found myself walking over to Oahu Market. I stumbled across Sing Hing Market (SHM), a meat stall at the corner of Kekaulike and N King Street. They had a large display of assorted pork cuts, along with Chinese roast pork and char siu meats. Immediately my eyes landed on the spareribs I was looking for and was delighted when the staff quoted me a price that was 16% cheaper than what I usually pay for at my go to place. I asked if they had 5 lbs plus as I had to feed a crew and the next thing I witnessed the male staff brought a whole bunch out and placed it on a scale that totaled over 5lbs. ***happy dance*** I advised the staff that I was making steamed spareribs. The next thing I witnessed, one of the male staff ran the sparerib slabs through the meat saw. It was then transported to the counter where the female staff chopped the spareribs into bite sized pieces for steaming. The staff had this process well set up where my waiting time was minimal. I also appreciated this stall's display as the layout of the meats were sorted in a way where it was convenient for the consumer to see what's available. Upon payment, I asked the staff for a receipt as I was getting reimbursed. I was impressed the female staff wrote "pork" along with the date and total amount paid. One of our employees marinated the pork and steamed it for lunch that day where it made a delicious meal. Several other staff also commented that the spareribs were delicious but the quality wasn't as good as where usually get them from. I personally felt the same way, too. Overall, SHM was a great find and came through when my go to place didn't have what I wanted. I'm willing to give them another chance as the sparerib price was considerably cheaper. Perhaps I didn't get the best quality but worthy for another try in my books.

Yesterday, we picked up a roasted 40 lb suckling pig from Chun's. It was our first time and…read moreeverything was great. From ordering over the phone, to picking up at 3:50 Friday afternoon (they close at 4), to the quality and flavor of the meal! I checked temp and it was only 110 when i got it home. And even though it was fully cooked, guidelines say it should be a minimum of 140 degrees when served, so I put it in a 250 degree oven to rewarm and didn't serve till it got up to almost 160 degrees. Only took 30 or 45 minutes. Everyone enjoyed watching me carve it up (which i only knew how to do from watching you tube videos) the meat was delicious, tender and moist, with crisp skin, in spite of the reheating process. All in all it was a great experience! We will definitely do this again.

Chun's Meat Market is located in the heart of Chinatown inside of Oahu Market, and it appears they specialize in Chinese BBQ meats like - Char Siu, Roast Pork, Roast Duck, Shoyu Chicken, Turkey Tail, & Five Spice Honey Combo Tripe. Service here was pretty fast & friendly, and basically this shop is a grab & go kinda joint. The day I came here I picked up half a Roast Duck, as well as a pound of Char Siu for my dad. What can I say about the grub? I did not partake in the Char Siu so I cannot say how it tasted, but as for the Roast Duck the marinade tasted on the saltier side. Although the price they charged for their Roast Duck was very competitive, the Roast Duck was not as meaty as the Roast Duck I would buy from other places I normally patronize. Overall, a pretty good Meat Market with great service.

The garlic shrimp, shell on, smoky grilled flavor besting any North Shore shrimp truck. $6.50 each. Skewers only. No sides. No carbs. It comes with a small container of gochujang sauce, mandatory IMO to boost the flavor profile. At first, I thought "Is this pineapple?" No, it's cubes of pickled radish. The dish lacked julienned carrots, bean sprouts, a fried egg, and sesame seeds but I didn't miss them. Bottom line: I liked this dish and would buy it again. That's a recommendation in my book. The Spicy pork was well seasoned, flavorful and cooked to perfection! It came with a delicious spicy tofu soup! The tuna kimbap was the best I've ever had! The creamy tuna filling to vegetable ratio was immaculate and each bite was well balanced. The price is reasonable for the amount of food you get and I am definitely going to be a regular here.
