For years I've clowned my brother about his reliance on Sweetgreen. Having worked in NYC and Jersey…read moreCity for years I am intimately acquainted with salad spots that cost the equivalent of college tuition and still leave you wanting. However, as I was a guest in his home and his wallet I was down to give it a try over the holidays when he suggested it. Based on my experience, I'm a believer - to a point. I started with the steak hot honey base and from there went HAM. Just my salad came in around $24. That's atrocious. However it was also delicious and packed to the brim with flavor and texture. I was pleasantly surprised. I think if I ordered as is I would have been disappointed - but being able to DIY was clutch. All that said, I FIRMLY reject the designation of places like Sweetgreen, Chipotle, and Cava as "slop bowls." In a time of rising economic and food insecurity, I actually find it incredibly disrespectful. Related but undeveloped thought - I also have issues with how items that contain "soft" ingredients like rice and beans - staples in countries with large populations of non white folks - get ridiculed as "slop." Is it the price that offends us? The preparation? Or the thought that who is eating it - (white) white collar workers - "deserve better?" We should unpack that at some point. -------- Overall Verdict: Yes. On someone else's dime.

Will definitely be coming back to try other items on the menu. The service was OK. Seemed like they were short staffed. Or fully staffed with three people.

From the food and ambiance to the consistently outstanding service, everything is truly top-tier. This visit was just as exceptional as every one before it. We shared the Sweet Corn Hummus, Spicy Whipped Feta, Brussels Sprouts, Crispy Wild Mushrooms, Crispy Potatoes, Grilled Chicken, and the Lamb & Beef Kefta. Every single dish was outstanding. I wish I had taken more photos, but we were too busy enjoying the food as it arrived at the table! For drinks, my sister loved the Strawberry Rose Paloma, and I enjoyed a glass of Kir-Yianni Sparkling Rosé, which paired beautifully with the meal. The warm, seasoned pita deserves its own recognition. It's soft, pillowy, and absolutely addictive. Honestly, it's hard not to fill up on the pita and spreads before the rest of the meal even arrives. Our server struck the perfect balance between friendly and attentive, without ever feeling intrusive. We usually make room for dessert, but we were completely stuffed this time. In the past, though, I've loved both the Warm Sticky Date Cake and the Frozen Greek Yogurt, and I'd recommend either without hesitation. I was secretly hoping for a tiny scoop of frozen yogurt as a birthday surprise, but my server didn't mention it and I didn't remind him of the celebration (and honestly, we were way too full anyway ). As a huge Top Chef fan, it's always special dining at Chef CJ Jacobson's restaurant. I had the opportunity to meet him during my very first visit to Ema, and he was incredibly gracious. His creativity and attention to flavor are evident in every dish. Ema continues to set the standard for what a great dining experience should be. It's the restaurant I recommend most often when people ask me where to eat in Chicago, and it remains my go-to place for special celebrations. I can't wait to come back again soon! #ImNotAFoodie #ImJustAGirlWhoLovesFood #YelpEliteSquad PS: the hotel next door no longer provides parking validation.

At what point does a salad stop being a salad, and start becoming legally eligible to be classified…read moreas rabbit food? I don't have a good answer, except to say this: wherever that line is, I felt as though Just Salad crossed it. All this, with a price point greater than 5lbs of 'actual' rabbit food. I'd ordered a Maple Crispy Chicken Salad. I feel deceived by the photo on the menu, for it felt as though it were mostly spinach and arugula, with everything else being as if an afterthought. The cheddar, almonds, cranberries, corn, and carrots were in amounts too small to offer a balance or contrast to the greens. Meanwhile, the amount of chicken was straight-up laughable. It felt like a little treasure hunt for a little protein! Now, drumroll please... A bowl of mostly greens and a meager amount of extras for right around $15 before tax... eep! Severely overpriced if you ask me. I will give them points for the ingredients being fresh, and not seeming like they'd been sitting out for too long. I'd also like to give a shoutout for the fast service, though to be fair I did stop in just before the lunch rush. With all of this, I would ordinarily award two stars. However, a month or so again had a Spicy Chicken Caesar Wrap, which didn't suffer from my qualms with the salad. This one was well balanced, and not simply greens in a tortilla. While also overpriced in my opinion, not as severely as the salad.
