Stopped by Plate for a late lunch today. A few tables in and outdoors, nicely lit, and a big chalk board with the week's special and their juices. My coworkers seem to frequent this restaurant and I've heard good things. The special of the day was a chicken or pork chop chop, I didn't feel like having that so I decided on the chicken pesto wrap with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes. There was a curry chicken wrap on their menu online, but I guess they discontinued it? The guy who took my order was constantly sticking his finger in his ear... Itchy ear? I don't know but I'm glad he wasn't handling my food... The food was ready quickly. I was not asked if I wanted my food to dine in or to-go. They just assumed it was for take-out and they brought it to me ready in a bag. But I actually planned on eating in... It was ok, a little bland. The wrap was quickly getting soggy by the liquidy sauce. I wanted to eat one half and save the other, but was scared it'd become a soggy and unappetizing wet mess. So I ate the whole thing haha. The Q-ban wrap was healthy-tasting, but didn't impress. The plantain in it definitely did help make the flavor come out (other stuff in it included bitter baby greens, brown rice, and turkey picadillo). The lean turkey sandwich was tasty - you get to pick between French, Cuban, or wheat bread. Nice touch. The orders don't come with any sides though so if you want more, you can order something else, In this case, I had the mashed sweet potato which was tasty. You could also customize your salad here. Coffee is well-priced (I would definitely make this a good place to chat). They even have soy latte for soy drinkers ($2). But really, I loved the sweet guava and cream cheese bread pudding - I would have that one consistently! There's limited seating inside and outside - which is okay since most orders are delivered. They have magazines and newspapers for your perusal. And you can bring your laptop here too as there is free wi-fi. Prices are really recession-friendly - most orders are less than $6 - so you could add sides or desserts to your meal. I would like to come back for their breakfast though, which is $3.99 or less. PLATE is a small but unique restaurant that serves great food and provides many healthy options. I've only been to PLATE in the morning for breakfast and it's amazing. Their food is always made to order. The only thing negative I can say is the fact that you come out smelling like the kitchen. This place is good for a quick, healthy bite. Prices are reasonable and service is good. I had the daily special last week (two soft tacos with a side of brown rice and house salad). The fish taco was better than the ground turkey, they needed a little bit more flavor, the whole meal was a bit bland (health conscious doesn't mean it can't be tasty). I can't say enough great things about Plate. They offer a variety of foods: soups, salads, sandwiches, fresh smoothies, all kinds of daily specials, breakfast.. I really like the daily specials because they are phenomenal and always changing. Yesterday they had a delicious chicken lasagna which sold out. They also have a bunch of sweet treats which ALL look tempting. Lucky for me they offer a free guava and cheese bread pudding the first time you check in. Stopped by "Plate" to grab a bite on the way down to Key Largo and I thought it was a great stop. Found it via yelp, of course. The owner Toto was super nice and friendly, and gave us the name of the best key lime pie in key largo (which we tried later and confirmed that was it was in fact very good). Anyhow, their special soup of the day was Crema de Malanga which is a family member of plantains I think? It tasted quite starchy but something that my fiance liked a lot. I enjoyed it as well, but I just picked out of his bowl. Toto was kind enough to let us sample some as soon as we walked in. Needless to say, we were sold. At least for one bowl. Just looking at the menu made me feel healthy! It felt great seeing they use wheat breads and brown rice as default, and fat free yogurt for smoothies! For that reason, I had to get myself a coral way smoothie (strawberries, oj, banana and fat free yogurt). I thought the smoothie was great and it made me feel less fat while drinking it hahah For food, I order the pesto chicken and my fiance had the pan con lechon. I ended up trading with him because I liked his pan con lechon a lot more. It was a drier pork sandwich, but oh, so tasty! Definitely a recommendation by me. The prices are very reasonable as well and I would recommend people to come here for a good meal. At the end of the meal, we also tried their bread pudding as well and it was a "thumbs up" from me as well. I just wish my stomach was big enough to eat the whole thing, but sadly it wasn't. Another it's fish tacos with cilantro brown rice and coleslaw. One thing is certain: No matter the day, the dish is delicious. The chef takes care each day to prepare the dish as if though you were coming over to his house. (The chef and staff are also incredibly friendly and treat everyone like Family...it's like a Cheers but for lunch.) Now healthy does not mean that it's low in calories and you'll drop pounds. It just means fresh, quality ingredients and choices (brown vs white rice). However, in moderation (as the dishes here are served) it can certainly help in any diet.
