Well, let's just say, I eat a lot of Thai food. I was happy to be in town visiting my folks and was even happier when they agreed to have Thai food with me- beats Arbys... So on a scale of 1-10, or meal was prob a 5 or maybe 6. Which is a shame cos Thai food is damn good! I had soup, which was mediocre- (but I WAS happy to find it in LEX). Mom had some cashew chicken and dad had a meat dish that he was please with- even though he did have to send it back as they left some requested vegetables in. I have come to the conclusion that Planet Thai has 2 chefs. One that knows what he is doing and makes amazing meals while the other one does not even want to be there and literally makes rubbish. I absolutely love this place but it is a hit and miss. Their noodles could be too sweet one day, perfect the next, the rice over cooked one day and perfect the next. Been waiting to try this place for a while and finally got the opportunity. First I should have realized the way my experience was going to go...just by how close I was seated near a table that was LESS than a foot away from me when there were several other seats available. After 15 minutes, someone finally comes and says, "you ready?" We order the food and 45 MINUTES LATER it comes. Food looked and smelled delicious , so of course I eat it. BUT AMONGST MY FOOD , what was waiting for me you ask ? METAL SHARDS. Told my waiter & he just looked at me and said, "oh." Didn't seem phased or like he cared at all. Probably one of the best Tom Kha soups I've ever had. Also, the peanut sauce for the satay is excellent. Also, the Panang Curry with chicken was very tasty and just the right heat at a 3, on a scale of 1-5. Then there's the sticky rice with mango. Off the hook. Loved everything we ordered here tonight. With as few options for Thai food that you have in Lexington, it is nice to know that this one is actually very good. The deal you can get for lunch is such a steal--entree, egg roll, and a soup--so good. I highly recommend the drunken noodles here, and I haven't had many other iterations of this dish at other Thai restaurants that compare--I usually drizzle the plum sauce on it for additional flavor--but of course I have a sweet tooth. I had a lot of people recommended this place. I am from Louisville where they have AMAZING Thai food. I went with the chicken dumplings and shrimp pad Thai. Easiest way to put it - nothing special. I would give the dumplings a 5/5, but the pad Thai itself was maybe a 2/5. Pad Thai was just very bland... I was basically just eating rice noodles. A quick walk from the office, we end up here a lot. The lunch prices are very reasonable. For under $8 you get soup, a spring roll, and a main dish large enough to take half to go for lunch the next day. Can't beat that. My favorites are the Planet Thai noodles, the fried rice, and the drunken noodles. The service is generally good, but when really busy, empty glasses can go unnoticed and checks can take awhile to arrive. I much prefer to sit in a booth, as the tables are placed very close together. With the prices and the tastiness of the food, Planet Thai is my favorite lunch spot. read more

Always like the food here. I usually get the Drunken Noodles with Beef (spicy 2). Today I also tried the steamed dumplings. Food was very good and spice was perfect. We used to order all the time for work but they added $8 delivery fee which was stupid because we ordered from them a lot and I'm sure they made some good money from us. I love planet Thai. I've never eaten there. I usually order through door dash or pick it up so I can't speak on the dining experience but the food is excellent. I really like how you can choose your "heat" between 1-5. I usually will do a 3 or 4 but note there's a HUGE leap between those two so if you aren't a spicy person beware! My staple is chicken pad Thai and I'll add shrimp. I'm slightly disappointed that they don't sell Thai basil chicken. It's sooo good! But overall, I don't think you can go wrong with whatever you order. I've also gotten the crab Rangoon and it's really good. My friend gets the orange chicken and the flavor is excellent! The first thing I noticed when I got here was how uncomfortable the booths are, but hat's fine as long as the food and service is good. So I order Pad Phet and Salad Rolls. About 30 minutes later the appetizers come around and that's when they tell me they're out of salad rolls (would've liked to know that earlier to order something different instead I got nothing). It's rice paper and vegetables it's not really possible to be out of that so that means they come pre-made here. Another reviewer mentioned how bad they were so maybe it was for the best. About 20 minutes after that (50 minutes of waiting) the Pad Phet came and despite the pool of sauce it had no flavor beyond water and soy sauce. It was supposed to be red curry paste based! So, the food is pretty good. But I do have my complaints. I got the salad rolls to start. It's said it came with mixed vegetables- which means lettuce and carrots. The same price ($4) as normal ones which usually have shrimp and cilantro in addition. The vermicelli inside was dry so they fell apart really easily. My dish was supposed to have tomatoes, peppers, and basil. Instead it had carrots and peppers. It was still good, but I'm not a big fan of carrots. Also if you ask for spicy, they just put dried pepper flakes. The squid was nice and tender. Their brown sauce (that's in most of their dishes) is tasty. Service is pretty bad. I don't know who my server was but she reeeeally didn't want to serve me and another guy ended up doing most of the work. They've never really had good service but man, she shouldn't be a server. Went here for lunch with a colleague and we both thought it was pretty terrible. The complimentary hot and sour soup deserved no compliments. Why would we ever think we would find decent Thai food in Lexington, Kentucky? Being Thai, I would never recommend this place to anyone. I guess, if you've never had Thai food before, you might like it, but please do not think this is a good representation of Thai cuisine. It's not. The host must've been covering for someone. He was taking to go orders, answering phones, seating people and taking orders. When he was busy, no one else could help the poor kid out and answer the phone? He took our drink orders, but when we weren't ready to order our meals, he never returned. After a good wait (10 minutes) we had to flag another server to come over and take our order. My mother order Tom yum soup with chicken to start. It was flat tasting. Nothing fresh. It needed some fresh ingredients to brighten the flavors. How about some fresh scallions and cilantro? There were no pieces of lemongrass, galangal or kefir lime leaves. My daughter had the chicken satay. She liked it. It was pretty good, but the peanut sauce was so sweet and was maybe missing coconut milk? The cucumber salad was good. My dad ordered a noodle dish he normally gets in Thailand. He was disappointed when it wasn't what he expected. He ate it and said it was just ok. My mom order the three spice fish. She said it was ok, but not like she would get in Thailand. I ordered the drunken noodles. You would have to be kee mao (shit drunk) to choke this down. It was a very dark color and extremely sweet. There wasn't much basil or vegetables in it. I ate what I could, about ten bites, before I actually gagged. Maybe they should skip making Thai food and switch to Chinese. I have eaten Thai across the globe and all over the U.S. and this was the absolute worst. Tom Kha soup was sweet and had no sour or fish sauce to it whatsoever. Veggies looked and tasted frozen and canned, and then, over cooked. Same for the Green Curry. I think the Green Curry was actually thinner and more watery than the soup! There were barely any vegetables or meat in either dish. I feel completely ripped off. The Green Curry also had no flavor and was not even green because it lacked the actual green curry to make it such. I will never eat here again. It is not even good enough for a craving in a pinch. It is subpar, sweet and freezer burnt blandness. Also, I ordered a 3/5 for spice on both. I think Nacho Cheese Doritos have more kick than their medium 'Thai' spice. read more

Especially after the miserable experience at Thai Orchid Cafe yesterday, (where I had to give 1 star and basically vow to never return) Planet Thai is the best Thai I've tried during my stay in Lexington. First, I have tasted quite a few Thai dishes between here and Toronto, and I can take quite a bit of spiciness. This place has pretty good service and some interesting decor. But the food! The peanut sauce was like watered down peanut butter, both for the salad rolls and one of their chicken dishes. You can tell the difference when something is made with fresh peanuts or a jar of JIF. The salad rolls were okay. It's a fine choice for vegans as a lot of dishes have a choice for tofu/vegetable and menu items are made with coconut milk. I love curry, I tried the green curry but it was super watery and overly spicy. It had more heat than actual flavor and wasn't very coconutty. I've heard lots of good comments of this place, and I'm not sure why. read more
