Egg roll
Aleeta P.

This Thai restaurant is within walking distance from Memorial Coliseum and serves authentic and tasty cuisine. We arrived around 6:40p on. Friday night. Even though they normally seat and serve immediately, there was a shortage of staff this night. We had to wait a good while before we were seated. Then, there was additional 10 min wait before we were served water or asked about drinks. However, once our order was taken, the food came really quickly and was piping hot. The vegetarian eggroll, filled with cabbage and carrots, was fresh and fried crispy. The outer portion was not too thick or hard, which is just the way that I prefer my egg rolls. Any much perusing of the menu, I chose the basil chicken with a "hot" spicy level. I also ordered a Thai Ice tea, which comes with cream. The cream helps to neutralize the spicy food. So that you can actually taste the flavors without you mouth being "on fire" from the spiciness. I really enjoyed my dining experience. I realize that our extra wait was because the restaurant was severely understaffed that night. I would love to try other dishes on future visits to Lexington.

The food was delicious and fast. They may have just opened for lunch. There was no wait. The menus are small to make sure you can have a peak at what you want and order. The set up is interesting. Good thing that it's good food. Because the location is under the actual little shopping center. Have no fear though. It doesn't give you a vibe that you will get accosted by a stranger lol. Then again I haven't been to this location at night. There is outside seating but it's inside but located outside if that makes sense. I did take a pic so you can see for yourself. I think a picture is worth a thousand words. But don't think your convinced stop in and see for yourself. I did like the dumplings I ate for an appetizer and my lunch was actually sesame chicken. Which was fresh and yummy. There was a honey infused soy sauce which I had not tasted before. That sat on the table to have with what you like. I didn't get the actual name of it. It may be something simple but it didn't have a name. So it may be something that they make in house. Either way it was delicious when you put it on your pot sticker and the rice that came with my sesame chicken. With that being said. Stop in and try this spot out. I enjoyed and you should as well. May the good food be ever in your favor

'Drunken noodle'
Mel T.

Ordered via DoorDash one Saturday afternoon. I had the "drunken noodles". I use quotations because they weren't really drunken noodles. They don't use the flat rice noodles. Instead, they use a regular, thin rice noodle. They also throw in little cherry tomatoes, so I think it's more like a 'use whatever we have in the kitchen noodles'. I know it wasn't a mistake because two of my friends also ordered drunken noodles, and received the same thing. The actual flavor wasn't bad but I just didn't care for the swap. If they ran out of the flat noodles, it would have been nice for a head's up, because I probably would have just ordered something else. But judging from some of these other photos, the other dishes don't look that great either.

"Yellow Curry"

The curry is more a broth that is over salted. Uncooked potato, mystery meat, cardboard minute rice. All for $13!

This review is based on my one time visit, and chicken Pad Thai was what I ordered. I'll try to make this one short. It was the only Thai place in town that I hadn't tried. It's on campus, but on a corner and easy to find... As long as you know to look for the awning and steps. It's sort of got a basement feel to it. I think it's been at this location for a while, the decor and atmosphere have an old feel to it, but they do have a 100% listed from the Health inspection. I always go for the Pad Thai on my first venture to a Thai place, so it was no different here. It was garnished with one carrot sliver, and five thin bits of chicken within the pile of noodles. The noodles weren't lacking in flavor, but they were dry... Like the times that I've had Pad Thai warmed up in the microwave the next day. So I added a dash of soy sauce to dampen it up a bit. It was still probably the worst Pad Thai that I've had in Lexington. My husband ordered the chicken cashew something or other, and it too was lacking the amount of chicken that it should've had. The portion was small for a dinner portion. But he seemed to enjoy it. We each had an egg roll prior to our meals, but had we not, I would note that even my portion was smaller than most Pad Thai dinner entrees elsewhere. But it was perfect sized after I consumed scrumptious egg roll. Note to the business: don't be skimpy with the main ingredient, if you want satisfied or returning customers, and turn the tv from Thai tv... at least during March Madness.

My how the mighty have fallen. Bangkok House used to be a pretty respectable Thai option. Not the best in Lexington -- which has been and always will be Planet Thai -- but at least decent. Not anymore though. I should say that I'd probably give Bangkok House two stars except that it does not deserve (and never did, really) the 4-star average rating it has. Hence the 1 star. I went here this past weekend on a visit home to the bluegrass. We walked in around 8 on a Friday evening to an empty restaurant. I ordered Red Curry Pad Ped with beef. The beef was Taco Bell grade, and the curry was almost flavorless. Everyone of the 6 people in my party remarked that their portion sizes were rather small. Particularly if you were to order a seafood entree for upwards of $12, the portions did not match the prices, especially in comparison to other Thai restaurants. My poor experience this time around makes me long even more for the Skyline Chili that used to be in this location 20 years ago.

While out shopping, the movies, and enjoying a great day in Lexington, the Fat Man and his wife…read moredecided to get a late lunch. We swung into Southern Cookhouse & Bar. Southern Cookhouse features scratch-made dishes using local ingredients, a variety of burgers, pizzas, and classic Southern entrees. I started with the Chicken & Sausage Gumbo because I love soup and all soup-adjacent things. The gumbo had a good, rich flavor from the roux, with subtle heat and a sweet finish. The chicken had a nice flavor, a little saltiness, and it was tender. The Andouille sausage was cooked well and rounded out the flavor profile. The tomatoes and scallions added brightness and crunch. The rice had a few hard pieces, but overall it was good. I do want to mention that I did find a few chicken bones in the dish, just so people are aware. My wife tried the Dunwoody Cobb, made with Grilled chicken breast, boiled eggs, bacon, avocado, tomato, and blue cheese crumbles, with spring mix tossed in Dijon vinaigrette. The lettuce was crunchy and fresh. The bacon had a great salt level, crunch, and crispiness. The avocado added a creamy richness to each bite, while the tomato's acidity cut through the Dijon mustard's sweet and bitter notes. The star of the show was the salty, nutty, creamy blue cheese crumbles, which meshed well with all the other components. The chicken was cooked well and had good flavor, but it was dry. While I avoided it, my wife said the boiled egg was well-cooked and added it to the salad. I had the Nashville Hot chicken, which comes with spicy pickles, coleslaw & mayo on slider rolls with potato salad. The potato salad was mustard-and-mayo-based. The potatoes were soft but still offered some texture. The mustard and mayo balanced each other and added flavor. There were eggs in the potato salad, but they blended into the background and did not stand out. The sweet pickle relish added crunch and texture without being overly sweet. I'm not sure if it was made in-house or from a container; it was good nonetheless. The slider was fresh, soft, and nicely toasted. The slaw was medium-chopped, with a great mayo ratio and a good sweetness, tasting fresh, crunchy, and creamy without being so rich as to drown out the vegetables or the chicken. The pickle was not spicy, but a thick-cut bread-and-butter type with a little sweetness and a velvety, buttery flavor. The chicken was juicy, tender, and cooked well. The Nashville-style spices were mild to medium, just enough to know it was there but not so overpowering that it was all you tasted. It was not overly oily either, which often plagues sandwiches of this type. The entire sandwich worked well together. Southern Cookhouse has a full menu, but some items do rotate or are seasonal. The bar is fully stocked, offering draft beer, tea, and soft drinks. They offer counter ordering, and the staff is very friendly. The Fat Man says that Southern Cookhouse & Bar is Fat Man Approved with 2 chins.

The…read morenew location was beautifully curated and had a cozy, but upscale vibe that we're used to seeing at OBC Kitchen. They even have cozy blankets available for their fireside, outdoor dining spots; a very cute and clever touch. The bar beautifully highlights their bourbon selection which is as expansive as you would expect being in the heart of The Bluegrass As expected, the cocktails were amazing! We tried a few of their seasonal selections, a classic cocktail, and a Four Roses Small Batch neat. All were fantastic! The gin cocktail "he who shall not be named" was well balanced, bright, and overall easy to drink-a crowd pleaser! The milk and sugar (classic cocktail) and the pumpkin espresso martini were coffee-forward, not too sweet options that made for a perfect "dessert" drink without feeling like you were drinking syrup. If you want a fun, new take on some classic cocktails- OBC is never the wrong choice! Now- the food! We had the Parker's Roll- they came out piping hot in a cute cast iron skillet, a cute nod to the KY Southern cooking that I grew up with. The rosemary had just enough presence to be different/modern but was not in your face, which was a bonus for me-but if you're hoping for super flavor forward rolls these may not be for you. Not pictured, my husband's caprese chicken- it was perfectly seared with just the right amount of crispness, the marinara and caprese salad on the side were the perfect amount of freshness and brightness to lighten up the dish. The short ribs and cheesy grits felt like home- a great dish for a rainy, fall night. No complaints here! We also split the hashbrown au gratin- it was yummy, the jalapeño was pepper first, heat second and had just the right amount of freshness and heat to make an otherwise "classic" dish just a little bit more special. SERVICE! While this is a new-to-us location, OBC is a well established, well executed restaurant and the service reflects their heritage. We were fortunate to be one of the tables that Rachel and Jake were working with tonight- Rachel was training but never missed a step and honestly, was a DELIGHT to spend the evening with. :) She was kind, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. She was not "pushy" and gave us plenty of time to just enjoy each course of our meal without being interrupted with ordering the next step. Jake (her trainer) checked in every now and then for feedback on how Rachel was doing, he was always polite and helpful but honestly, not necessary because she was amazing! We also had a few members of the bar team and "runners" check in/deliver drinks and food throughout the meal- they were all polite, timely, kind, and willing to help even if it was outside of their typical "role". Price point: for us, the meal was a little more than we would pay for "just dinner" but for a rare, parents-only, night out it was perfectly reasonable. We will probably reserve this for an "occasion" or a showcase dinner when we have friends in town BUT it is perfect for that! Overall, a great time, with great people, and great food! We're excited to have them on the north side of town!

Or maybe slip into the bar unannounced. Super friendly! As they've outgrown the Tates Creek location and are building out the new location, the website and Google conflicted on who's open and where. At the moment I'm here on TC. To make sure I knew where I was going, Grace called to confirm my reservation and the correct location. Bonus points! If you're reading this they've already moved to Turner Commons. Maybe the best fries I've ever had. Seriously! I love a fry. The thicker the better. These aren't steak fries but a healthy, house cut, seasoned to perfection. I could make a meal of of these with the dipping sides of smoked tomato ketchup (meh), lemon-garlic rosemary aioli (oh yeah), and a thai chili dipping sauce (B I N G O) $9 Cola-Braised Shirt Ribs were good. The greens with bacon, I mean, bacon, rocked better than other sides in the past. So there's a win. The scoop of grits were delicious and made for a perfect trifecta @ $33. Wanting something more refreshing yet still filling? I highly recommend the Heirloom Tomatoes/Watermelon/Burrata salad $22. You will think it's huge, and it is, but you'll clean your plate. Dessert? Well. That's bourbon, Son. OBC has an exceptional collection. Peruse options on the iPad to get hints of flavors, proofs, and costs. May I suggest the Stag Single Barrel? It's uncut, unfiltered, and a very limited batch from Buffalo Trace. It's a beauty and a beast. On a Sunday night, there was a wait, but we were able to snag two seats at the bar. The bartenders were great--I wish I remembered their names! They made some excellent food and drink recommendations and were very attentive. We started with a Caesar salad to share, which isn't pictured, and then ordered two pasta dishes that we absolutely devoured. Everything was delicious! The following day, we discovered that many restaurants are closed on Mondays, so we ended up at Carson's again. This time, we decided to check out the back porch. We were expecting a similar menu, but the back porch seemed to focus more on meat and fish options, while we were looking for sandwiches. So, we relocated to the main dining area at Carson's without a reservation. Thankfully, the hostess was able to seat us but let us know that we would need to be finished dining by 7 p.m., which wasn't a problem for us. Our server was great, and we started with the goat cheese appetizer, which was absolutely incredible! Unfortunately, my Buffalo chicken sandwich was drenched in Buffalo sauce to the point that I couldn't really enjoy it. My spouse and I also decided to share sides of the mac and cheese and smoked Gouda broccoli. I was pretty disappointed with both because they were heavily covered in truffle, which I personally don't like. Because of that, I wasn't able to enjoy my second meal here as much as I had hoped. Nonetheless, I would still recommend checking out Carson's. There are plenty of menu options, and our first experience was fantastic. Based on my two visits, though, I would strongly recommend making a reservation if you plan to dine here!
