Worst service ever.!!!!!!Americans are not welcome here and by the way I am Uruguayan my husband and adult kids are American.Waited 2 hours to get our food, everybody that came after us were served before. Run out of pizza at 5:30 and this is supposed to be a pizzeria? When my husband asked the waiter what was the problem wiit our food she told him she did not speak English, the last time I checked Elizabeth New Jersey is in the USA, the least that they can do is learn some English. read more

Deliciousness! Uruguayan style pizza and classic dishes. All great and served by friendly staff! If you've never tried, do yourself a favor and go. Unbelievable how cruel people could be in this world you have someone work for you for 12 hours and pay them $110 that's $9.16 an hour, the minimum wage is $14.13 Per hour in the state of NJ, keep in mind this person worked in the kitchen so no tips are given to them and they pay under the table...very unprofessional of these people...not wanting to pay someone two days of labor that's 24 hours a person worked.. and then you tell them you won't pay them because they want to leave because you literally slaving these people so sickening read more

I would most likely skip many of their offerings other than their pastas or their pizza, though as that is where they shine the most. Uruguayan pizza is defined by it being served by the meter, with a light layer of cheese, on fresh dough. Offered are a variety of toppings, and often ordered with Faina (chickpea bread) to put on top of the pizza. Pizzeria Montevideo is arguably the best Uruguayan style pizza in town. My husband and I decided to come here because we have never had Uruguayan food before, and the reviews for Pizzeria Montevideo just made it sound like a great homey place for a meal of comfort foods. Our leisurely lunch here was everything we hoped. We made the trip out to Elizabeth on the back roads through Union, enjoying the golf course and Kean University sightseeing (drove past Lutz's pork store in Union and sad to hear it is closed!). Much better than the airport highway crawl. Between a Cuban and Colombian restaurant, the pizzeria sits on a little lot, parking in the back, with relaxed activity: staff making pizzas, drinking espresso and mate tea. We order in English at the little counter, a couple of beef empanadas, a slice of pizza suprema with chopped ham, olives, pimentos, and a steak sandwich with bacon, ham and cheese. Soda and water from the frig and this was a very delicious and satisfying special meal! It's certainly not health food, and not a place we'd bring our vegan friends, but everything was so flavorful and delicious, and it was like sitting in the kitchen of a friend's mom and having her bring out more and more home-made food to share, until we were stuffed. We took home the leftovers and a caramel roll dessert that was very tasty later. The whole feast was under $30. We were tempted by the pasta, mixed grill, and chorizo, but we will try these out next time. And maybe next time we'll have some espresso too. read more

Uruguayan pizza being -- what I would argue -- an under appreciated subset of 'Jersey pizza'. Uruguayans have been an active community in Jersey since the late 1970s, having their own entire 'niche'. Pizzeria Montevideo isn't Santillo's, it's not 'bar pizza', it's not your run of the mill Italian American pizza spot -- it's just Italian-influenced 'Rio de la Plata' pizza and meat-centric meals. It has its own charm. Carb heavy and meatopia (note: vegans turn elsewhere). Despite the name, the focus here isn't so much pizza as it is gnocchi, milanesa, empanadas, etc. The service is what you would expect in a working class neighborhood and the prices are reasonable. If you want something 'different', you owe it to yourself to visit Pizzeria Montevideo. read more

Delicious Uruguayan food, something I've never tried before. This was definitely a great introduction. I had the beef tongue entree and one of their desserts (the one they said was the most traditional). Both of them had unique flavors and were very well prepared, and the portions are generous (including the dessert). No one in my group tried the pizza, which is not like your typical American pizza. For one, it's made with chickpea flour, and I don't think it's a typical 8-slice circle either. Another Yelper should try it and let us know! read more

Being the food explorer I am I'm bound to find the best of every culture, i believe I have found the one here for N.J. ohhh and I can't finish this review without telling you about the pizza. Out of this world. not the pizza I'm used to from the Italians, ( which I grew up on by the way respect) this pizza is incredible. when my mother first said try it I said get out of here I only eat Italian pizza. what the heck we are here now let me see, Oooooo myyy every time we come down here we bring 2 pies home. Delicious and authentic Uruguayan food, but unfortunately serves small portions compared to the price your paying. We ordered Gnocci and the personal tray was barely half full. The pizza with mozzarella barely had mozzarella. They used to serve better portions, but recently they have become cheap.
