What are pupusas? From the Nawat language meaning fluffy, these are masa dough cakes crossed between tamales and quesadillas filled with meat, beans, cheese, or vegetables, then griddled until golden brown and crisp. They are popular, especially in Salvadorian and Honduran cuisines. Located on East Linden Avenue in Linden, some of my colleagues placed an order for takeout at Los Barrilitos (little barrels) yesterday. Their online menu, primarily in Spanish with some English, consisted of a variety of breakfasts, appetizers, sandwiches, empanadas, dinner entrees, desserts, and specials of the day. As first-timers, it would have been great to have a picture of the meal on the menu to get an idea of what's being offered. We decided on small chicken soup, maduros (sweet plantains), bean and cheese pupusa, rice, and pupusa special consisting of meat, bean, cheese, and loroco flowers. Upon arriving at this family-owned establishment by the Carbajal brothers, Marlo and Jose, parking could be a challenge depending on the time of day, as it's small. The interior has an old-school vibe. We were welcomed by one of the staff, and our order was ready. The pupusas were pretty big in size, tasty with the right flavor, and not too greasy. They were traditionally accompanied by a vinegary cabbage, carrot, and onion salad called curtido. The salad is typically lightly fermented, kind of like sauerkraut. The price was economical for the amount ordered. Overall, we enjoyed our meal, as they are a popular, affordable meal perfect for a family feast but also quick enough for a snack, lunch, or dinner on the go, which we can recommend. read more

We'd never been there before but figured why not?! The place inside isn't much to look at but we had planned to take our food to go anyhow. We ordered steak n onions with beans n rice, n then I got flan n maduros n crossed my fingers (I was hoping it was sweet plantains but wasn't sure cause she wanted to put sour cream on it n I'd never seen that before). I'm not Spanish n she was working her best English n I appreciated it. The whole drive home smelled amazing n when we got home everything was what we had hoped. Each item had great flavor, serving size was good, prices were good n yes they did turn out to be the sweet plantains I love. The only reason I don't give this place a 5 stars is because it's not a very fancy place as far as ambiance. But..... The food here is amazing! Affordable! It's a local spot for my family and I and we love it! Never fails we have tried almost everything once! Our faves are the pupusas and the tacitos. We have ordered the bandeja paisa to the simple steak encabollado. Everything is great. Service is good. Today we ordered for delivery. I looked up the menu online and ordered the Catracho breakfast to go. They said it'll be ready in 15, did not get my order until 30 minutes later. The prices on the menu online are false. My family and I order delivery a lot from here but after this terrible experience I will convince everyone I know to not order from here. Food was decent but due to the service it made it worse. She did not follow up to ensure if we wanted refills , check if our food was good , see if we wanted anything else (which we were gonna place a huge take home order) . We tried so many time to get her attention , but she just stood near the kitchen joking and laughing with her co workers . There were only 4 tables being used ,so there was no excuse to not tend to the customers. Order took 1 hour and 5 minutes to deliver. I'm located 1.6 miles away. Food was delivered eventually but my order was cold. The Burger was cold. It is a frozen patty you buy at Shoprite. Tastes like a frozen burger, especially served cold. The fries were OK but again they were barely warm. From their taste and texture I feel like they could be pretty good if received fresh. The Papusas were on the small side but were decent. You can find these pretty much anywhere papusas are made. Nothing special.
