What are pupusas? From the Nawat language meaning fluffy, these are masa dough cakes crossed between tamales and quesadillas filled with meat, beans, cheese, or vegetables, then griddled until golden brown and crisp. They are popular, especially in Salvadorian and Honduran cuisines. Located on East Linden Avenue in Linden, some of my colleagues placed an order for takeout at Los Barrilitos (little barrels) yesterday. Their online menu, primarily in Spanish with some English, consisted of a variety of breakfasts, appetizers, sandwiches, empanadas, dinner entrees, desserts, and specials of the day. As first-timers, it would have been great to have a picture of the meal on the menu to get an idea of what's being offered. We decided on small chicken soup, maduros (sweet plantains), bean and cheese pupusa, rice, and pupusa special consisting of meat, bean, cheese, and loroco flowers. Upon arriving at this family-owned establishment by the Carbajal brothers, Marlo and Jose, parking could be a challenge depending on the time of day, as it's small. The interior has an old-school vibe. We were welcomed by one of the staff, and our order was ready. The pupusas were pretty big in size, tasty with the right flavor, and not too greasy. They were traditionally accompanied by a vinegary cabbage, carrot, and onion salad called curtido. The salad is typically lightly fermented, kind of like sauerkraut. The price was economical for the amount ordered. Overall, we enjoyed our meal, as they are a popular, affordable meal perfect for a family feast but also quick enough for a snack, lunch, or dinner on the go, which we can recommend.

We decided to try this place since a friend recommended it. Now, we only tried the pupusas, and to be honest they were not the best for us. I don't know about the other items, but for the pupusas not my favorite. The horchata was pretty good though. I will do say though, the staff is friendly and attentive even tho the place is nothing fancy or anything. The location has a parking lot, so will not have trouble with that given that is a busy street.

Pretty good Salvadorian food. Not expensive and staff is friendly (and speaks English). Wish they had the pickled cabbage with the papusas

Beef taquitos. There were 4 in my order.

Have gotten papusas from here in the past and they have always been delicious. Added beef taquitos to my order this time and they were absolutely delicious. Looking forward to ordering from here more often to change up our takeout routine.

Used to have great pupusas but last time I went I had a horrible experience. Pupusas barely had any…read morefilling especially the cheese ones. Their cabbage was white not pink. Service was non existent. Overcharged us and it smelled like sewer and cigars. Never going back.

It's time to update my review considering my first review was based on take-out only and I've been…read morehere many times since. Um. Best pupusas in NJ? Yes. Still. And I've looked and looked and LOOKED. Every time I try a new pupusa place, I end up being disappointed with myself for being "adventurous" when I have already located the best. Best curtido too. Sometimes you go to these pupuserias and they have the pink curtido (what. is. that.) or they put jalapeños in their curtido (like, staaahhhp) - but not Willy's. Oh man, just talking about the pupusas here makes me want some and I'm currently on a diet, boo. But not boo for you if you're looking into this place because I'm telling you right now, don't think. Do. Now, as far as the dine-in experience, it's aiiight. Not amazing. The staff here doesn't speak English, so if you don't speak English, it will be difficult. On Sundays, they usually have Spanish karaoke going on in the dining room, so if you ain't into that - do yourself a favor and order pick-up. You will miss out on the chips and salsa you get when you dine in, though, and they are damn good. The staff isn't the most attentive and they can be a little fast - usually because they're also working as bartenders at the very busy bar on the other side of the dining room. However, I never felt completely neglected. Oh, they don't offer tap water and charge $3 per bottle. BOO. You're better off getting an agua fresca for that price (and it would be so worth it too). In my times here, I usually only get the pupusas, but the bf has ordered the churrasco and he loved it. OH! Also, the tamal de elote here is also the best I've had in NJ! Yummmmmmmy!
