Visited La Cabaña for an early dinner on Sunday. It was pretty busy, with lots of colorful decor. There was salsa on the table, but no chips or anything. A waiter came by and took our orders. We got some carnitas and lengua tacos to start. The meat was very tender, and came with onions and cilantro on corn tortillas as expected. The tortillas were very good too, i was thinking they might have been freshly made. I ordered the steak chimichangas for an entree. It came with 3 well fried chimichangas, rice, beans, and salad. I wish the chimichanga had cheese in it along with the meat. But it didn't. Not my favorite, but OK.
My favorite parts about this restaurant were the ambiance and service. The ambiance is traditional, Mexican decor and the people working here are very nice. The food was good, but this wouldn't be my favorite place to get Mexican food; that's why I'm rating it a 4. For example, I normally don't need sauce or anything on my flautas besides what it comes with. I found them lacking in flavor so I added lime and salsa to each bite. I had a bite of my MIL's enchilada and the chicken was dry and didn't have much flavor. Enchiladas are slow usually drenched in green or red sauce and these only had it it on the bottom. Again, the food was good, just not great.
Authentic Mexican restaurant. Very tasty, friendly staff, noise level was moderate. Family friendly atmosphere. Margarita was good, sangria was good. Tacos were really good! The tostados were good but too many chips for me. If you're in. Elizabeth definitely check it out
A truly wonderful authentic Mexican restaurant. Food is super fresh and salsas are flavorful. The horchata may have been made from scratch but I didn't ask, either way it was great! My husband and I loved eating here and this has been the most authentic Mexican I have discovered since moving to the east coast four years ago. Hands down, a solid great restaurant.
This place is a true gem! We accidentally found it on our way to PA and it exceeded all our expectations. We are huge fans of Mexican food and culture, traveled to Mexico multiple times, and this restaurant is the most authentic one we've found around here. The food was fresh and absolutely delicious with great service and decor to die for. It's like you are instantly getting teleported to Mexico the minute you step inside :) Fantastic experience all around, highly recommend!
Some seriously authentic Mexican food that we stumbled upon, en route to Asbury Park. I opted for the barbacoa tacos (YUM) and the salsa that's on the table is pretty spectacular (we ended up putting it on everything). My partner and I shared the chilaqiles (solid), though his enchilada had the oddest sauce on it. Service is great, food is served fast and I loved the decor on the inside. If we happen to be in the area again, I'd want to try their horchata, which it seems everyone was ordering (except for us, alas, lol).
I came here recently and I Mom surprised that I didn't review it because I used to come her me many years ago when I used to be in the area more often I love what they have done with the place . The inside is painted and decorated with lively colors . It did not used to look like that like 7 years ago! But I used to pick up food there all the time and it was always really good This place is real Mexican food! Not processed or anything like that! My go to has always been the chicken enchiladas with green sauce! Comes with 3 enchiladas , rice and real refried beans! Yum. Very filing . They give you salsa , diced onions and jalapeños and also lime on the side! Perfect! Parking is street - metered and usually hard to find especially at night . Area can be sketchy at times around Elizabeth ave. If I'm in the area I will definitely stop by again! If you want Mexican and are in the area- come here !
*Somewhere in between 3 and 4 stars* Definitely authentic Mexican, no Tex-Mex here so if you're expecting that you'll be disappointed. Got some guac to start and it was good, some people at my table thought it needed salt but I liked it the way it was. To drink, I got a margarita on the rocks- tasted a bit low quality but nothing terrible. I got chicken enchiladas for my entree with no rice, double refried beans. The red sauce was like nothing I ever tasted before- it was very sweet and had some spices I didn't recognize for an enchilada sauce, but I thought it was decent. The refried beans had great flavor and were pretty thick which I appreciated because I hate watery beans! I normally always get dessert but for some reason I didn't so can't comment on that, but the Tres Leches looked good. Our server was nice, but service was slow. It's a small place and parking can be difficult (street parking only, no lot.) There's no signs indicating this but meters are free after 6 PM. Don't pay 25 cents per 10 minutes for nothing like I did :) Overall, I'd recommend it for authentic Mexican if you're in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back!
If you're ever tired of the manic shopping at Jersey Garden, and don't want food court food, try this place out. The authentic limited menu here is amazing. From the home made guacamole to the beef tacos, the chicken tropical all tasty and super fresh. We walked and felt like the only nine regulars. We were quickly greeted and welcomed. The staff is attentive and super nice. The decor is true Méjico and festive. Don't miss it.
Good taco place in Elizabeth, New Jersey. It's one of the best kept secret in Elizabeth. We ordered some pork tacos and another appetizer. It was well worth the food. This is a nice affordable and great tasting place. We also had the desert which was great as well. I wouldn't consider this place fancy but more casual (see photos)
We had a good time here, ceviche with shrimp and octopus was amazing. We shared a variety of items on the menu everything was good.
This restaurant was such a good spot to get good Mexican food with drinks and a nice atmosphere! It was pretty busy on a Saturday night, but we lucked out and didn't have to wait for a table (around 6:30pm). Started off with nachos and some barbacoa tacos- all of it was really tasty- the nachos were simple but super cheesy which I love. My house margarita hit the spot and was well made. I went with the chicken enchiladas for my meal and loved it. The salsa verde was delicious and it was nice, hefty portion of the enchiladas with rice and beans. We shared a piece of flan for dessert which was also really good. This is a great authentic restaurant, friendly staff, good prices overall just a really fun time. I would definitely go back!
Note: I did not expect to find an authentic Mexican restaurant in NJ! Being from California, having been to countless Mexican restaurants, and Mexican families' homes, plus having worked in a taqueria in high school, I know Mexican food. We were WAY early for our flight from Newark back to SF. We were hungry but the last thing I wanted was airport food. So, we took a quick $10 Lyft to this little gem. I really questioned the validity of authentic Mexican food in NJ, so I did not have high expectations. As soon as I walked in, I knew it was legit. The decor is warm, inviting, friendly, and home feeling. It was like stepping into a high end taqueria in my home city. The food was so good. Filling plates, bold flavors. The menu is legit, you have all the staple classics you could want and more. The service was friendly and fast. Our waiter had a Mexican eagle tattoo so you know they're not BS'ing. ;-) As mentioned, the inside decor has a charm. The colors, the tables, the chairs, the art. All created a wonderful ambiance. It is spacious with plenty of room for small to larger groups. There is even a little divide which makes one of the rooms even more private feeling. If I lived in the area, I'd certainly come back. I recommend anyone in the area to check it out. And if you're stuck at Newark airport, don't settle, take a short ride over, you won't be disappointed.

Delicious Mexican restaurant in downtown Elizabeth.... Started it off with some nachos But they were not my typical nachos, they were nacho chips buried in melted cheese... Different but still tasty. I had a strawberry margarita and they brought some condiments for our dinner to the table. I ordered the steak chimichangas. Now I'm accustomed to getting one large chimichanga, but here I was served three smaller chimichangas topped with sour cream again different but still very delicious. They were served with a side of rice and refried beans. My husband ordered the whole red snapper fish that was served with rice and a side salad. My husband always enjoys getting a whole fish and he liked this fish very much. Everything here was very authentic and very delicious. The staff was very welcoming and friendly, and their decorations were very fun and festive and we look forward to returning. read more

This place is a great place to get authentic Mexican good. It has become our go to place for some great guac and ceviche. The guac come with a side of limes and a red sauce that its awesome. We put that sauce on everything. Wish we could take it home. So far everything we have had has been good and each meal has had a great ending with their delicious flan. I absolutely enjoy this Mexican Restaurant. The decor is authentic, beautiful chairs and tables. The service, very good. The waiter was very nice, attentive and welcoming. The food is AMAZING, every morsel was absolutely delicious!! One suggestion, please use real crab meat, not the imitation crab meat, for the ceviche shrimp with crab meat. I dont know how to write the entree en espanol. :-) However, 5 Stars and definitely try the Michelada!! read more

My son and I read the reviews for La Cabana on a recent trip to Elizabeth, and decided to give it a try. The atmosphere is friendly but there was a steady stream of customers constantly coming in. We new this was a great sign about the food. I ordered chimichangas and he ordered chicken burritos. Both were delicious!!! It is now my son's favorite Mexican spot. read more

La Cabana on Elizabeth Ave. is the most popular Mexican restaurant in town, with good reason. It is one of the few put together, not too hole-in-the-wall feel restaurants. It has stylish decorations, a roomy interior, as well as an expansive menu. However, I came for the tacos. The tacos al pastor were $7.50 for an order of 3. They were definitely delicious, but not quite there yet either. The seasoning was good, the meat itself was juicy, but they were lacking any taste of pineapple and the tortillas themselves weren't memorable. 3.5/5 read more

These amigos know sauces!! Fantastic huevos rancheros, eggs on corn tortillas slathered with tomato onion sauce, plus beans & rice on the side, just $7. Steak fajitas had amazing charred & caramelized peppers & tomatoes mixed with fork-tender beef strips, of course refried beans & rice on the side, a pile of steaming soft corn tortillas too, wow just $12. Beef enchiladas had a slightly sweet, mildly spiced sauce instead of the usual tomato-chile powder, a nice touch, a steal at $9. No free chips and salsa, but considering the low prices, I can't hold that against them here. The red salsa is hot, not kidding! Whole crisp fried corn tortillas come with an order of guacamole ($6), break 'em to size. Fresh lime wedges on the table woke my tequila thirst hmm. Vegetarian rating: argh maybe 2 stars. Some options are cactus (nopales) salad, quesadillas, guacamole; only entree I saw is chiles rellenos with cheese. Loved the corn, beans and peas in the Spanish rice. Friendly English-speaking service. Fast too. BYO, all they got is jarritos. La Cabaña finally gives me a reason to look forward to visiting ewr or ikea lol. read more

Love love this place! They never disappoint and the food is very authentic, all the spices to make you sweat if you love spicy. Guac and chips is a must and topped off with a delicious margarita. The only thing here I didn't really like is the tacos, needs like a sauce or something. Everything else is yummy. Staff is friendly and the decor is amazing. read more

Traveling and staying close to the airport so decided to go get some dinner. Had a margarita, chips salsa (salsa is HOT), guacamole (was VERY good) and Carne Asada Plate (really good). Typically, you never get enough tortillas but they gave me more then enough. read more

This is one of the best and most authentic Mexican restaurants I've been to. I have ordered the enchiladas, the beef tacos, beef with onions, the guacamole, the horchata (amazing sweet drink) and everything is just so delicious, never disappointed. Big plates too. The waiters are nice, the place is also very cute. Under-priced if you ask me because it's that good! read more
