This place was a recommendation from my coworkers while working out of Newark Penn Station. For a Friday the place wasn't busy but heard it can get crazy in there. So I ordered one of their tortas with steak, jalapeño, onions and cheese. I was expecting a simple sandwich to hold me until I got home. What I was served was the biggest torta I had ever seen. And it was delicious! Fresh ingredients all around, loved everything especially the bread. The house made green and red hot sauces are amazing. Love the flavor and heat. The jalapeño in the torta kicked as well, I was a happy camper. Few tables to seat and eat, staff very friendly and helpful. Prices are moderate and worth it for the good quality food served. Loved how the place was nicely decorated for FIFA and gave a relaxing atmosphere with the games playing on TV. Can be a cool date spot as well. It's goood most of the time when they have their menu in stock. I especially like their taco Tuesdays when tacos are $2 each! Seems they run out of some like the chicken often but don't update their menu. Also the other day i ordered online through their preferred method, however when I arrived to the restaurant I discovered it was closed! What a disappointment! Disappointing Experience -- Please Check Your Card Transactions I'm very disappointed with my experience at Tortas Lokas in Newark. I ordered two steak burritos with French fries. The receipt clearly shows: - Food: $30.00 - Fries: $2.00 - Subtotal: $32.00 - Tax: $2.12 - Tip: $6.40 - Total: $40.52 I paid using Google Pay. However, when I received my order and checked my account, I noticed a pending charge of $48.62, which is $8.10 more than the total printed on my receipt. I immediately brought this to the young lady's attention. She contacted her boss and took pictures of both my receipt and the transaction. After speaking with her, she told me that the difference was because of the tip. I explained that the receipt already clearly shows a $6.40 tip and a final total of $40.52. The numbers simply do not add up to $48.62. What made the situation even more frustrating was being told that I should contact my bank to resolve it. If there is an issue with the restaurant's POS system or the amount being processed, I don't believe the customer should be left responsible for correcting it. I even asked her, "If you were in my shoes and I was in yours, and you were charged more than what your receipt showed, how would you feel?" She admitted she would be highly upset. That is exactly how I felt. I've been supporting businesses in the Newark community for the past 15 years, including this establishment, and I believe customers deserve to be treated fairly. Mistakes can happen, but what matters is how a business handles the mistake. Unfortunately, I did not receive an apology, a clear explanation, or a refund for the discrepancy. If you order takeout from here, especially when paying by card or Google Pay, please check your transaction carefully against your receipt before leaving. I hope management takes this seriously and looks into the POS transaction because $40.52 on the receipt should not turn into a $48.62 charge without a clear explanation or authorization. read more

We were staying at the Hilton near Penn Station and found this spot nearby and were so glad we did! It's a small restaurant nicely decorated and very friendly service which was nice to experience because the service we had in NYC was not very friendly. I live in LA and have been to Mexico several times, and let me tell you, this place is authentic. The horchata is one of the most delicious I've had. Not too sweet or thick and great flavor balance. I had the quesabirria tacos and they were very delicious with the consome. My family had tortas and they couldn't finish them because they were huge, but they enjoyed every bite. I'm staying at the hotel near Penn Station. And was craving some flatten food. I found this on yelp and people were raving about the tortas. I ended grabbing a torta and some flan to take back to my hotel room. Sandwich was so big that I had some for lunch the next day. The flan was so-so. I still ate it. I came back a week later with my coworker and we ended up getting a signature sandwich. It was huge and delicious. This location is very friendly staff and it's also BYOB. If you love Tortas as much as I do then RUN don't walk to Tortas loca. They have a huge selection of intresting Tortas here, these are alot different ingredients than the ones I am used to. Many contain ham or hot dogs, but I skipped to the end of the menu and ordered the Mananyera. It was huge, sloppy and delicious, about the size of a football on fresh bread, loaded with breaded steak, chiliquiles, salsa, cheese, avocado and tomato. The sandwich quickly devolved into a squishy mess, and I would up finishing the soggy chips with a spoon. A month ago I was supposed to meet some friends at the bar next door before a show at Prudential Center, but the bar was packed so we ended up here instead. What a happy accident! They brought me a ham and egg sandwich as big as my head! With avocado, tomato....the works. It was so delicious I fantasized about it until I had a chance to return last week. Price is right, too. Wouldnt rate a star at all. Very unprofessional. I made an order a few weeks ago online but then quickly called to cancel the order right after placing the order because the order was going to take over an hour for delivery. I was told my money would be reimbursed. 2 weeks go by and i called and they asked for proof that I made the order because i guess they forgot to reimburse. They said they'll call back but a whole week goes by and i have yet to receive any type of help. The food might be good but the staff is very unprofessional. Wish I found this place sooner. Ingredients are super fresh. I think they bake their own bread or they get if from a local bakery. It's super soft and fluffy. It's a big hot sandwich but it doesn't fall apart when you bite into it. Not one bite was dry. I tried the pernil and two tacos. Tacos are super cheap yet filling. I added crema and guac. Just get the torta Loka it's like a torta cubana and taste just as good. It's a huge portion and you'll prolly eat the other half for dinner or a midnight snack. The tacos were good too, but I'll have to be back soon because they were out of tripas, which are my favorite. read more
