    Pollo a la Mexicana
    Cara F.

It doesn't look like much from outside but, the inside is cozy. It wasn't very busy when I arrived and I was seated right away. There were a few tables when I arrived and it it continued to fill up. I was brought great chips and salsa to start - they were delicious. I ordered the Pollo a La Mexicana as my main dish. I was pleasantly surprised by the portion size. It was more than ample for one person. The only negative I can really say is that the sauce on the chicken was a little watery on the plate and somewhat over took the salad. I will definitely come back to give something else a try.

    Meat was cold - GROSS

BASURA. I'd give zero stars if I could. So many things ruined our experience here. The second our food was served, a random woman walked into the restaurant and walked up to our table and showed us a very old and worn picture of her "cousin in the hospital". She asked us for money and we had to say "no sorry" because we didn't have any cash. She persisted on asking us until we ignored her. I looked over to the servers for help and no one came over to help us. They were so careless, it almost seemed as if they knew her. Moments later, the lady finally left with an attitude. I was SO confused. What was happening was truly unbelievable. We usually give money to people when we have it but this time we truly didn't have any cash and she didn't even seem like she needed help. The picture looked like it was from 1895 and her energy was completely off. I wouldn't be surprised if it was some sort of sorcery. I rebuke it! SECOND! Our plates were hot but the meat in ALL of our tacos were cold? Someone explain please. We kindly asked the waiter to take back our food and she brought us back the same tacos but microwaved. That's gross. I don't even use a microwave at home. Our dinner cost us $45, I don't believe we deserved to pay considering our shitty experience. We were so annoyed and hungry at that point that we just kindly asked for the check, paid, and left. They didn't even offer us any remedy. Just gross ugh. Horrible experience. Yuck.

Who would have thought that in the midst of Portuguese/Brazilian occupied Ironbound you would find such a great Mexican restaurant. My chilaquiles were delicious. Everyone in our group was happy with their choices. They happily complied with the few minor changes/substitution that we had. Byob.

    Steak and Chicken Tacos

Mi Pequeño México helped to spice up our Valentine's Day with a beautiful heart tray of tacos. We got steak and chicken tacos that came with guacamole, salsa verde, hot sauce and sour cream. The Valentine's Day package also came with a half gallon of horchata. My only qualm was that the steak was a little too tough. I've also come here on a regular days and had various dinner dishes. All of which we're definitely tasty and flavorful. I have to say the chicken fajitas are my favorite. They recently opened up for indoor dining so definitely stop in if you're in the area.

    Chips & Salsa

I used to be a regular here. I became obsessed with their chimichangas lol. I would come like every week sometimes twice a week. I haven't been here in about 3 years! Glad I can say the food is still good! The staff is very attentive. I visited on Sunday & got the beef tacos! Delicious! They also give you chips & salsa as you wait for your order. They make their own chips (tastes so much better than store bought) & I think they make the salsa too (I'm not 100%) sure. I Always recommend this place when it comes to some good Mexican food!

Chips and Salsa and Chips (bland and hard)

I really wanted to give this place a higher rating, but the food was bland unfortunately. I had to force myself to swallow it. It tasted frozen, not fresh. It lacked that authentic Mexican touch, and tasted like any ordinary microwave meal. It was very stale, old, and oily. The service was excellent, however, and the wait staff were very attentive and friendly. The atmosphere and ambiance is lovely as well.

Arrived at 7:56 pm on a Friday night and they wanted to sit us right by the front door, tried to rush us because the kitchen was "closing", they claimed they closed at 9 although the hours outside are lit and say say 10:00pm. End it of it all didn't eat there and went a block away to Sabor Unido for a better dinner and customer service. Overall glad I didn't have dinner there.

NO ES BUENO!!!! Yelp needs to add ZERO STARS to the ratings because this place was Garbage. They handle their food in a very lazy manner. I was excited to try out some tacos and their enchiladas. I ended up leaving still hungry and disappointed. The taco meats were cold and when it was brought to their attention they seemed careless and just took them and microwaved them over. Im honestly disgusted that they are even comfortable to serve food in this manner. If you're going to microwave food do it right where I don't even know. I kindly asked for the check, paid and went about my way. Please don't even bother coming here unless you're into cold meat. I'm appalled

This has become our local Mexican spot since the closing of El Rancho Grande a.k.a. El Bandito in Orange (*tears*). At first it was hard, but the good food and relaxed/homey feeling of Mi Pequeño Mexico has made it easier to make the transition. The restaurant is on Ferry Street and within walking distance of Newark Penn. If you are taking a car, street parking is the way to go (though there are a few parking lots close by). From the sidewalk, you'll see a vestibule enclosure and then the restaurant door. There are tables when you enter at the front of the eatery, but also a few booths towards the back. The food is really good. I liked the pork chop (when I ate meat). Enchiladas are great and those salsas are amazing! I would also recommend getting the guacamole as a starter, too. The waitresses are nice and definitely pass the refill-your-water test (you know, how you can correlate your level of service with the frequency of how often they refill your class). I recommend this place definitely!

I can only imagine that the negative reviews are from people who (1) were actually eating at a different restaurant or (2) are competitors trying to besmirch one of the best restaurants in the Ironbound. I'm not above giving negative reviews where warranted, but I have eaten here at least 100 times over the past 10 years (no exaggeration) and I have never had a meal where the food was cold or where the service was anything other than gracious and attentive. The guac is terrific, the al pastor is the best around, and the food is always fresh. And the pozole is the best I've ever had!

    Al Pastor Tacos

In an area that is predominantly known for its Portuguese food, I stumbled upon this Mexican restaurant and was not disappointed! I ordered Al Pastor tacos and they were delicious, they were so flavorful and the portion was great. My friend ordered chicken quesadillas and she didn't leave one behind from how good they were. I highly recommend stopping in for a bite if you're in the area.

Decor: pretty dated mexican decor. This place has been around since the 90s and they haven't really updated. 2 stars Service: friendly staff but slow service. 3 stars Food: I got the big bowl of meat. It was huge and pretty good. I'll say 3.5 stars There are better Mexican restaurants in the ironbound, but in a pinch it's ok

    Tacos with chicken

Surprisingly few people in this place on the Friday night that my wife and I chose to go. Our waiter was extremely nice and helpful, bringing out some chips and salsa to start. The chips were oven baked and the salsa had just a little kick to it, a solid homemade feel. Portions of the entrees were exactly what you'd hope for: generous and well sized. My wife ordered a chimichanga, which came with rice, beans, sour cream and guacamole. Everything was done well. My chicken tacos came out in excellent display, rolled into wax paper to contain the 3 dipping sauces that were served on the side. The most spicy sauce made me cry like a dove in Prince's house, which was somewhat unexpected. The price was nice and dried my tears right up. The one thing holding this back from a 5 star? Drinks. The selection was a bit limited and there was no water with an option to refill. Overall a wonderful place, though.

The food is probably the closest you can get to actual Spanish tapas but what i love most about this place is that everythings got flavorrrrr For our table of 4 we got CROQUETAS with their house cured chorizo- very good POLLO FIORENTINA- chicken was so tender and packeddd with flavor! BARRIGUITA- plentiful serving for a tapa, we loved the potatoes it came with too CHICHARRON DE POLLO- flavorful chicken and easier to eat than you think TARTAR- delish but small Chipirones- sooo delicately breaded you can barely tell, was great COSTILLA A LA PLANCHA- plentiful for a tapa, we recommend cooking for longer since its traditionally a tough cut of beef SAUTED VEGETABLES- tastey and not mushy thankfully! MILLIONAIRE CAIPIRINHA for my drink. was soooo good, not too sweet and not quite as sour as a margarita, was perfect for me!

The food was absolutely amazing really flavorful and well done. Just be a little prepared that most dishes come in smaller portions. But the quality definitely makes up for it. I ordered the paella, and it's easily enough for two or even three people and it was well worth it. Really delicious. The drinks were also definitely worth trying while you're there. The only thing I wasn't big on was the desserts they didn't quite live up to the rest of the meal. But overall, great atmosphere, excellent food, and a fun experience. I'd definitely come back.
