I've been a customer of this place for a while, and honestly, I used to really like their food. But my experience with their service has become extremely frustrating and disappointing. A couple of years ago, I wasn't able to pick up an order due to a situation I couldn't control. Ever since then, they've refused to let me place orders. Every time I call, I'm told I'm not allowed to order or have food delivered to my house because of that one cancellation. It feels unfair to be permanently blocked over a single incident from two years ago. What makes this even more upsetting is that I've stayed loyal despite some serious issues. At one point, I even found a cockroach in my food. While I did report it at the time, I chose not to leave a public review because I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. They only replaced the food and didn't offer a refund or any real apology. I tried to continue supporting this place, but being denied service over and over again has made it clear that customer loyalty doesn't matter to them. It doesn't look like much from outside but, the inside is cozy. It wasn't very busy when I arrived and I was seated right away. There were a few tables when I arrived and it it continued to fill up. I was brought great chips and salsa to start - they were delicious. I ordered the Pollo a La Mexicana as my main dish. I was pleasantly surprised by the portion size. It was more than ample for one person. The only negative I can really say is that the sauce on the chicken was a little watery on the plate and somewhat over took the salad. BASURA. I'd give zero stars if I could. So many things ruined our experience here. The second our food was served, a random woman walked into the restaurant and walked up to our table and showed us a very old and worn picture of her "cousin in the hospital". She asked us for money and we had to say "no sorry" because we didn't have any cash. She persisted on asking us until we ignored her. I looked over to the servers for help and no one came over to help us. They were so careless, it almost seemed as if they knew her. Moments later, the lady finally left with an attitude. I was SO confused. What was happening was truly unbelievable. We usually give money to people when we have it but this time we truly didn't have any cash and she didn't even seem like she needed help. The picture looked like it was from 1895 and her energy was completely off. I wouldn't be surprised if it was some sort of sorcery. I rebuke it! SECOND! Our plates were hot but the meat in ALL of our tacos were cold? Someone explain please. We kindly asked the waiter to take back our food and she brought us back the same tacos but microwaved. Mi Pequeño México helped to spice up our Valentine's Day with a beautiful heart tray of tacos. We got steak and chicken tacos that came with guacamole, salsa verde, hot sauce and sour cream. The Valentine's Day package also came with a half gallon of horchata. My only qualm was that the steak was a little too tough. I've also come here on a regular days and had various dinner dishes. This has become our local Mexican spot since the closing of El Rancho Grande a.k.a. El Bandito in Orange (*tears*). At first it was hard, but the good food and relaxed/homey feeling of Mi Pequeño Mexico has made it easier to make the transition. The restaurant is on Ferry Street and within walking distance of Newark Penn. If you are taking a car, street parking is the way to go (though there are a few parking lots close by). From the sidewalk, you'll see a vestibule enclosure and then the restaurant door. There are tables when you enter at the front of the eatery, but also a few booths towards the back. The food is really good. I liked the pork chop (when I ate meat). Enchiladas are great and those salsas are amazing! I would also recommend getting the guacamole as a starter, too. The waitresses are nice and definitely pass the refill-your-water test (you know, how you can correlate your level of service with the frequency of how often they refill your class). This was the first Mexican restaurant I found in the Ironbound. Since then, Mexican Food at Spicy Brazil has opened and I generally prefer the food there. But Mi Pequeno Mexico is a pretty good option. The location is also good, right on Ferry St. Usually it is somewhat busy (no wait but at least a few tables filled) and just has a nice atmosphere/feel to it. Plus BYOB! Support the many wine shops in the Ironbound and bring some wine! (I don't think they open it though so you may need a corkscrew fyi) The food here is pretty good. I've tried a bunch of stuff on the menu. I have especially enjoyed the fajitas (ridiculous portions, even for seafood... so generous!), rice and beans (I normally don't like either), and tamales. Other dishes did not really do it for me- I was pretty disappointed with my steamed goat- it had kind of an odd smell/taste to it and was mostly bones. The meat in dishes is usually pretty good though sometimes it can be tough. The menu covers most of the standard Mexican dishes that you would probably order. I definitely plan to come back and try their tacos and their chile relleno. Enchiladas are pretty good, not the best I have had by any means but definitely solid. One thing I absolutely do not get: their burritos have mozzarella cheese. Their food is pretty authentic for the most part. But mozzarella and Mexican food? Oh hells no. The horchata is really good. Chips and salsa are brought out before your meal along with 3 other sauces (one is a tomato based hot sauce, one I think tomatillos not sure, the 3rd is either the same as the first or something I can't identify) that are all tasty. In terms of menu options and atmosphere, I think this is really good option. The food is not the best Mexican food but all in all, A-OK so 3 stars. read more

I can only imagine that the negative reviews are from people who (1) were actually eating at a different restaurant or (2) are competitors trying to besmirch one of the best restaurants in the Ironbound. I'm not above giving negative reviews where warranted, but I have eaten here at least 100 times over the past 10 years (no exaggeration) and I have never had a meal where the food was cold or where the service was anything other than gracious and attentive. Surprisingly few people in this place on the Friday night that my wife and I chose to go. Our waiter was extremely nice and helpful, bringing out some chips and salsa to start. The chips were oven baked and the salsa had just a little kick to it, a solid homemade feel. Portions of the entrees were exactly what you'd hope for: generous and well sized. My wife ordered a chimichanga, which came with rice, beans, sour cream and guacamole. Everything was done well. My chicken tacos came out in excellent display, rolled into wax paper to contain the 3 dipping sauces that were served on the side. The most spicy sauce made me cry like a dove in Prince's house, which was somewhat unexpected. The price was nice and dried my tears right up. The one thing holding this back from a 5 star? Drinks. Tortilla chips made on the premise that HAVE to be paired with their rich guacamole. We ordered with a 5 de Mayo hangover and I'm so happy to say that none of my 6 coworkers had 1 complaint. We had the tamales, pork chops, nachos, mi pequeno mexico enchiladas, mole poblano and spinach burrito. Each one got better with the next - so we all ended up sharing! The meals are very large, def enough for two. The only thing is the delivery did take about 40 minutes (so order ahead if it's a large order at lunch) and the prices of their stuff online is off by like a $1 or $2 a plate, so if you're tight on cash, just make a note to ask for the total ahead. read more

I started up a good conversation in Spanish with one woman, who informed that the restaurant was family operated and the menu was inspired by the cuisine in Puebla. At one point, her son (or cousin or nephew) came out and shook our hand and thanked us for coming. It was rare to see that, especially from a kid who looked like he was 15 and barely old enough to work (legally, that is). The food is another story. I like that they offered a mixed taco option so I could try the chorizo, res, and carnitas tacos. They all seemed to have contained fresh ingredients, to include fresh cilantro, but they lacked flavor overall. It was as if the meat was unseasoned in all three tacos, which forced me to drown each of them in their sauces, some of which contained a lot of heat, but no flavor. I came here for lunch on a Friday with coworkers because we missed Taco Tuesday at Hell's Kitchen. So we made that day or taco Tuesday Friday! I can't tenderness what I had but I definitely had tacos. The tortillas were fresh and doubled. The complimentary salsa was great. A little spicy but that's how I like it. Can't complain. 4 tacos $8. This is a pretty great authentic Mexican restaurant. I have dinner here a few times a month. The food is always the same, love consistency. It's never smothered in cheese, every sauce I have tried is flavorful. Each dish has a nice mix of flavors. I really enjoy the three sauces they bring out when your order tacos. They use crema, not sour cream. Thick, crunchy chips. Some of my favorites: The pork carnitas tacos are delicious, very flavorful and moist. The enchiladas with green sauce(salsa verde). The group I work with enjoys going out for Taco Nights and what better place to go then Mi Pequeno Mexico? It's not fancy food, but seemingly home cooked goodness from Mexico in Newark! You get a lot for what you pay for - free chips and salsa in the beginning then a nice order of what you have. There's so much, enchiladas, plate of 3 tacos, burritos, fajitas... I've ordered tacos which were fresh and good for what you pay for ($7-8) and another time I ordered a burrito that came as more like a tortilla with your choice of meat (chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp) and beans with lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, rice, and beans on the dish for you to scoop up and eat with the burrito. My coworkers have ordered enchiladas too which seemed like an interesting mix of the same side dishes of a burrito but with saucy corn tortillas instead. They have reopened after a fire and the place is nicer and brighter inside after the some repair. The restaurant serves a wide variety of mexican food to appeal to most people's taste. Plus the place is extremely cheap and portions are a good size. Six of went for dinner and our bill was 80 bucks for some apps and dinner all around. Some of the cost savings comes from the the fact they are BYOB, which is nice plus there is liquor store just down on Ferry street about a block away. The food is great I have had a number of dishes and all are freshly prepared I personally love the tripe soup and mole poblano but the tacos, and other dishes are wonderful. The services is great, quick and responsive even if there is small language barrier if you don't speak spanish but it is not a problem in the least. I rather go for the steak or chorizo. Gauc and chips are pricey but also good.
