If you are looking for a super late night spot for Spanish style burgers then this spot will be your main bet. Tiny indoor with table seating in the middle of nowhere (the hood). At least it's made fresh to order.
If u don't eat steak or pork this is not the place for you or If u don't speak Spanish or Portuguese just keep walking. I stopped by this restaurant because my co worker wanted a chicken sandwich from here. Apparently they are known for their unique sandwich's that has the small potato sticks in it . But in his opinion the chicken sandwich was just mediocre. I ordered the veggie Brazilian wrap which is actually a pancake with sautéed veggies it in . But the taste pattern is very weird and there were barely any veggies in the pancake. The staff is rude and barely speaks and understands English. They were struggling trying to take my order! Waste of my time & $10.
Amazing, visited NJ/NY for my birthday from Houston. This was my last meal before I flew back and all I can say is that's it's been my favorite out of everything I've tried. It's always the hole in the wall looking places that hit the most. Everyone was nice and the food was delicious. Would love to have this back in my hometown.
Casual 24/7 eatery with good quality and fairly nutritious options for how casual it is. Very good portion sizes for the price. Quality is consistent. Limited seating inside (pre-COVID) and seating outside (is appropriately socially-distanced during COVID). -16. Da Hora sandwich: egg, bacon, ham, hamburger, chicken breast (unbreaded) and steak. Very good portion for the price. Will fill any gal and even guy even with a large appetite. -Bolo de nozes: white/vanilla cake with thick pudding-type filling with walnuts and lots of fluffy frosting (a little more than my liking as it was quite sweet after a while). Very good. Would def recommend. Would feed 2 or more (or 1 dessert lover like myself slowly paced, lol) -french fries: too skinny for my liking (McDonald's thickness) and initially came out cold but the waitress did not hesitate to exchange them when we told her. Would highly recommend for a casual meal when you have a large appetite or after a night out.

The food is always amazing no matter what Brazilian salgado you end up getting you'll never be disappointed wether it's the coxinha, kibe , esfiha, pastels it'll always been good! The staff is always super friendly and very attentive, always making sure you're taken care of and satisfied. It's a really good environment overall! Best place in the ironbound to get Brazilian salgados hands down!
This is a staple for the local students. It's cheap food that is quick, generous in portions, and cheap. They're open late night so naturally it is popular with the students. As someone who is no longer a student, I'm not sure I'd come out of my way. I'm not knocking the classics but I think once it's definitely more of quantity over quality situation. They have a variety of latin-style burgers and fries and drinks. The restaurant is located in the heart of Newark so be careful with where you park. Tip: They are well known for their banana slices in their sandwiches.
I enjoyed the sweets at Altas Horas! The Brigadeiro cake was my favorite. I visited Altas Horas a few weeks ago about an hour & a half before Newark's curfew (8 PM) went into effect so they were wrapping up for the evening. Luckily everything I ordered was already made and sitting behind the glass. I ordered a slice of Brigadeiro cake, a slice of Carrot Cake, 2 Brigadeiros, and 1 Coxinha (breaded cone-shaped fried chicken) all for about $17. They did not have any Pão de Queijo left which is understandable given the time but they did have other Salgados (savory fried foods) available. Brigadeiro cake- It was my favorite. It's a chocolate cake with layers of chocolate condensed milk and chocolate sprinkle icing. The slice of cake was huge! It took me 3 occasions to eat it all. The cake was moist and a little wet which reminded me of Tres Leches. I recommend! Carrot Cake- I'm a big fan of Brazilian Carrot Cake especially because of its liquid chocolate icing but this cake was not good. The cake was so hard. It had the consistency of cornbread- super dense and pretty dry. I ended up throwing my slice away. Brigadeiros- Very good! Brigadeiros are balls of condensed milk and cocoa powder rolled in Chocolate sprinkles. The ones at this bakery are huge so 1 Brigadeiro is plenty. Coxinha- Another Brazilian delicacy. My husband really enjoyed it.
The 24-hour Altas Horas offers the hugest, craziest Brazilian sandwiches around the clock! Our server at this local, casual restaurant only spoke Portuguese, but it was immediately clear what we wanted to order. The Da Hora sandwich was labeled on the menu as "The Biggest of Altas Horas" and came with a hamburger patty, grilled steak, grilled chicken breast, a fried egg, and bacon and mozzarella cheese wrapped in ham, along with lettuce, tomato, corn, and potato sticks, all in a soft bun. This was an incredible-looking monster of a sandwich, but disappointingly, all the grilled meats were rather dry and flavorless. However, the server brought over several housemade sauces, including a creamy molho verde (green) and molho rojo (red), which added nice flavors to the sandwich. We also ordered the Salada de Frango, a salad of lettuce, tomato, onion, olives, and hearts of palm, all topped with a generous portion of grilled chicken. Again, the meat was rather dry and flavorless, and the vegetables weren't as fresh as they could be, but everything here made for an incredible value meal nonetheless!
I was craving this certain type of sandwich so I found myself here. The place itself is small so don't expect a lot of seating. It sits on the corner and is in the ironbound section of Newark. My waitress was bilingual but my friend who is Brazilian ordered for me because she speaks Portuguese. The food came out very fast and tasted extremely fresh. They also have cakes and desserts on display. I was too full to try any but they looked good. The only downside to coming here is the parking situation . Street parking is hard to come by especially on the weekend. Expect to walk a little while.
Always a good meal when you eat here. Have been going there for years & when it's not too packed after a night out it's a must go to spot. All their burgers are delicious & so are the shakes. Service is good & you'll always leave extra full.

I used to come here all the time& the food/service was always great! I dont know what happened, but I will not be going back. The first thing was the extremely nasty server (the cashier was a sweetie). She didn't smile not once in the hour we were there, gave me an attitude when I waited 30 minutes for my food& my french fries came out cold, & was trying to raise her voice to me in front of my kids. I was rang up before I ate (which was fine), but they charged me a 20% gratuity (for tip) and that ridiculous, especially when the server was beyond nasty, I had to get up to get my own sauces, straws,& sodas. When I got up to ask for my sodas (that I paid for& did not get) she gave me an attitude again!! Someone needs to train her or get rid of her, horrible for business! (Also asked for very well done bacon& as you can see it was very fatty) read more
I went back to this location and their burger is still delicious. My most recent order included a Cheese Egg Bacon which was huge and very tasty. I also ordered their chicken pie (empadão de frango) which is also very decent. Staff is friendly. They don't have a parking lot but there's street parking nearby. read more

I have traversed this good realm for a good moment, and I'm proud to say that I found an establishment that understands how to make good steak in this area. For the price, this place gives you an outstanding burger with enough contents between its buns to slay an average coyote. When I ordered my "X-Fominha", I was immediately in Wolverine mode. Any word that is preceded with an "X", I know you have to be X-Men ready. So, there I was in my yellow spandex, and I realized that I had taken the "X" too literally. I did not care, I spent three hours donning an outfit that was two sizes too small for me. I'm dressed for the occasion damn it, I ain't leaving without my burger. Now, I waited for a few minutes to get to the front of the line and Sabertooth decides to crash through the front window, it must have been confused by the mirror wall, so he charges at what he thought was me, and ended up knocking himself out. I offered a slight pause of concern, then ordered my X-Fominha. Now, let me describe this to you, if there was a Beast, and not like X-Men Beast, this thing was it. When they handed me my burger, I knew I was dressed for the occasion. A lady looked over and offered her sympathies, BUT SHE DOES NOT KNOW WHO I AM. This burger had Bacon, Ham, Egg, Potato Stick Fries, Sirloin Steak, Corn, Tomatoes, and enough lettuce to count for a cheating vegan. The Sirloin Steak was handled professionally, it was not hard to chew into it and the mountain of other ingredients I named previously. They also provided some special sauce which corresponded brilliantly with the sandwich. At this point, Sabertooth became jealous and attacked me in a rage. I smote his ass and finished my burger on his body. I left satisfied and still had money left over for some late night festivities. Even the woman in the establishment who cast me a look of sympathy, now looked at me with respect that I know I deserved. 4 stars for my Brazilian brothers and sisters. You guys made me feel like a hero. read more

All though their food is bomb their costumer service is not. I called for a specific order hours prior to pickup because it is a holiday. I wanted it to be ready by 3:15. I'm get there ON TIME, and the lady is confused about my order. I said I called hours for this to be ready when I got here since I come over 40 mins away. They didn't even start making it. She told me I had to wait another 20mins, very rudely. Mind you the place was empty read more
Food is ORGASMIC ! sheesh ! Service is very disappointing and the cleanliness is tragic. We waited 17 mins to be served, counting from the second we sat down. Once the waitress acknowledged us the food was tendered pretty quickly! So I was happy about that since I was starving, and I usually get hangry. To eat, I had the X California burger and my oh my, I literally cried when I took my first bite. Everything tasted so fresh and clean I enjoyed every single bite. Although it's questionable and maybe frozen "burgers" .. it's still good. As far as the cleaning, they need to hire a professional company to come and help them clean. When you can see chunks of dirt and scum on the table ...... that makes me question the kitchen for sanitary purposes. Granted, I know this is in the heart of Newark.. but man !!! Sometimes Fox's reviews really BORE US He'll recommend something, insist and EMPLORE US We'll tell him it sucked, then he'll simply IGNORE US Whenever we try a new place he's been there BEFORE US But now we realize that Fox must ADORE US As he writes flowery food reviews to LURE US Because we tried the food & drinks at ATLAS HORAS And it's so good that I think we need a CHORUS Atlas Horas, Atlas Horas, the greatest Brazilian food in the land Atlas Horas, Atlas Horas, until you try it, you'll never understand Atlas Horas, Atlas Horas, drink Abacaxi while you eat an X-Tudo Atlas Horas, Atlas Horas, I wonder if this song will be as good as Sussudio. What to get: X-Tudo (brazilian burger w/ everything) and an Abaxaci Com Hortela drink What else: I hate to say this is better than your fave Brazilian spot... but it's trudo. Anything else: Tudo de mis Xs love the X-Tudo. Also: The Caldo De Cana is awful. Stick to the one at Oasis of Boston. It's fresh squeezed sugar cane juice. Also their X-Banana is an X-Tudo with added banana. I doubt I'll like it but omg, if you're one of those Brooklyn types, you must order it, right? I first found this restaurant using the ALTASvista search engine. I didn't drive here, nor did I taxi. Instead I rode in here on my HORAS. True story. Sort of. Did you know that Ironbound in Newark, NJ is basically a mini Portugal-meets-Brazil? It really is, and you'll find some of the best Portuguese-speaking deliciousness here, and I'm not just talking about the girls and boys. Altas Horas is a 24 hours restaurant with some of the best Brazilian treats in the US. Only Oasis in Boston ranks higher on my mental list. The X-Tudos here are taller than the Altas Mountains of North West Arfica. It's literally one of the biggest burgers you'll find anywhere, and it's under $10, and is exactly like some of the better ones you'll find in Brazil. It's served at a bunch of other places all over the oh-so-friendly Ironbound District of Newark (the friendly part was sarcastic), but Atlas probably has one of the best ones, although the rolls they are served on are occasionally, regrettably, stale. But certainly out of the half dozen I've had, it wins. Even better than this crazy Brazilian burger is the Abacaxi Com Hortela drink. So delicious! It's basically blended up pineapple and mint. I'm in heaven. I could swim in this stuff. In fact I think I will. Let's fill the pool, people. Usually when a pool turns bright yellow it's a bad thing. But not anymore. OK, still sometimes a bad thing. Like if it's the YMCA Pool. But anyway. The other fruit drinks are great too, with a lot of tropical options. Prices aren't awful, especially considering some of the prices of other Brazilian sit down places nearby. And how good this stuff is. Lots of other options on the menu, and when you sit in, they sometimes bring you heated up Pao De Queijo, which are cheap, so order some anyway. Melty, delicious, Brazilian cheesy bread. Heaven. The Pao (as I said) is good here, and they have Sumol cans, which are Portuguese and fantastic, especially the Orange one. Forget American Orange Soda. Try this and you'll never go back. Tastes of real oranges. Service is phenomenal, which is unusual in these parts, because Ironbound has, on the whole, some of the most brisk and unfriendly service I've had anywhere. I think a couple of the boys here fancy me, and flirting with them while waiting for my food is always fun. I think it makes any female companion jealous because they're usually cute young Brazilian guys in ridiculously good shape. Not everything I've had here has been good. Skip the Acai completely. You'll have to go to Boston for that. Also if you want custard tarts, then it's all about the bakeries nearby, especially at Teixeira Bakery. OMG such amazing custard tarts. I love tarts in general and usually there is custard involved when it's me and a tart. So anyway. Make sure you stop by Altas Horas, surely one of the best 24 hour restaurants you will ever find. Now I have to press ALT-ctrl-delete and shut down my computer. ALTernatively I could write another review... Nah. I think that's enough for today... for this week... for this month... for this year! (This Lifetime) Oh and if you feel the need to go to church after this meal to worship the Lord for giving you such delicious food (Jesus Cristo!) then make sure you kneel at the ALTAS. Me and my brother traveled from Bloomfield to Newark on my quest to find the highlights of Newark gastronomical delights, and Altas Horas sure was worth the drive! The burgers here are out of this world. I don't think I've had anything as unique and delicious as this insanely outfitted steak sandwich; I'm not even sure you could call it just a steak sandwich- it was like a Rodizio on a delicious soft roll. Steak seasoned perfectly, with chicken, hamburger, canadian bacon, an egg, corn and potato sticks, with romaine lettuce, fresh ripe tomato on the most fantastic roll. When I ordered it, I couldn't imagine why anyone would put so many ingredients on one sandwich, but after the first bite, I was hooked. And every sandwich seems to come with an egg, and bacon, and corn... SO freakin yummy. THe fries we shared were in a huge basket, definitely not a single serving, and we also ordered fresh mango juice squeezed on demand it seems- with no added sugar, a steal at $3 a pint. I asked this sinewy young waiter with the size 28 waist if he ever even ate this stuff- judging by his 2% body fat I cant imagine how- he smiled and laughed, but after seeing the flow of beautiful brazilian people coming in and out of this 24 hour spot, they must be hiding the secrets from the west on how they can eat like this and not be 500lbs. THis place is so great, so cheap and 24hrs, I am lucky its not closer- I am saving myself for a few days to return, but return I will. Writing this at 1:35am, I am rationalizing the trip to try the X-banana burger...I read here, its awesome. read more

Wow- that was amazing. I went there yesterday just b/c i read so many great reviews and i wanted to try it. I just tried the x banana burger, and all the reviews are right. Who would have ever thought that the combination of burger and banana would go- WELL it does! The burger, bananas, corn, potato stix, mayo sauce combination was great. You just dont want to be done with the meal. it is a small little place, very casual. The waitress brought us the wrong check first, and then added a drink onto our bill that we didnt get, but they fixed it no problem. Overall tip- MUST EAT BANANA X BURGER read more

1) I imagined the sandwiches would be bigger, but I barely could eat half! I ordered the grilled chicken, corn and mozzarella cheese. So good. A little bit too much mayo and I would of preferred their homemade mayo instead because it was more flavorful. 2) They did not have the Brazilian soda I wanted but the boy/mesero taking our order suggested another that was okay. 3) On that note the wait was bad and there was obvious preference to those who spoke Portuguese. My group of 5 were really understanding. Even when people glared at us for our seats. 4) Tried their chocolate pudding. Nom nom. I would get so fat trying their food and I do not even care. Too bad I live in NY and was just here by chance. Eat their sandwiches. Or desserts. And bring me some. :) read more

Looking for a late night spot Sunday night, I remembered a friend's recommendation to check out Altas Horas in Newark. Place is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Can't beat those hours. The menu is monstrous. So many things to choose from. But i was here for what was described to me as "a good sandwich with a ton of sh*t in it." Go big or go home. Ordered "Da Hora", advertised as the biggest sandwich on the menu. It was gigantic. Da Hora had a chicken breast, sirloin steak, hamburger, bacon, egg, cheese, 2 slices of ham, mozzarella, potato sticks, lettuce, tomato, and corn mixed with mayo. The meats were all cooked well done, but the other things in the sandwich hid any dryness to them. The corn mayo mixture was excellent, I feel like it tied everything together. They also have 3 bottles of sauce, one is ketchup the other 2 i think are chipotle ranch and some sort of spinach ranch mix. I like the 2 ranch based sauces. UPDATE** OMG THEIR SMOOTHIES ARE DELICIOUS! Perfect consistency, not too thick, not too thin. Great flavor, not artificial tasting at all. read more
Good prices, authentic food, cool neighborhood We would definitely come back here. There are several cool spots in this neighborhood for food and drinks and Atlas has a nice spot outdoors to enjoy the weather. The food was good, particularly the sandwiches. Everything reminded me of the food you'd find around Rio, good flavors and plenty of meat. read more
