Ironbound in Newark. It's my favorite place to grab a bite to eat - great flavors, generous portions, and so off the beaten path that unless you are a native, you'll have to make an effort to go there. Seabras Marisqueria is an excellent place to get seafood (well made good octopus salad), McWhorters or Ferry Street barbecue have great Portuguese ribs, and whenever I want lots of decent quality steak inexpensively, I instinctly reach for multiple cyrobags of Picanha (priced $5.95/pound, which is cheaper than most places in NY) at A&J Seabras Supermarket on Lafayette, walk it to the butcher's counter or ask for it to be cut onto generous strips for broiling in a barbecue (or we can sous-vide it in garlic butter, then seared). If I want great Pasteis de nata, well, that's Alvaro's bakery. Now, if I want a great burger or steak sandwich, that's... Okay, so first, let's figure something important out. If you flip through a menu at a Brazilian sandwich joint (such as Pao de Queijo in Astoria or Hamburgao in Ironbound), you will see a common term - X-Tudo, as in X-Ham-Egg-burger or X-Tudo burger. What the hell does that mean? Well, in English, the letter X is pronounced "ecks". In Portuguese it's "chi-ss", which is close to " cheese", so you could abbreviate the pronunciation of cheeseburger (pronounce chiss-bore-gare in Portuguese) as x-burger. As for tudo, oh, that's the magic term that brings joy to the heart of any sandwich geek, since that's the term for everything, or throw in the kitchen sink and Dagwood it up. If you order a Mexican torta it's usually tomatoes, avocados, Oaxaca cheese, jalapeños, beans, then the protein. In a Brazilian "tudo" it usually contains lettuce, tomatoes, ham, egg, corn (milho) and little crispy potato sticks. Now, you might think "that doesn't seem like a challenge at all, I'll just go to the local Bareburger and shove all kinds of toppings into the offerings, why should I schleppe out to Ironbound, and for that matter, Altas Horas?" Well, see, it's all about balance and avoidance of what I could call the baseball glove syndrome. Imagine a standard Burger patty on a standard bun, and you keep piling it up with toppings. After cooking most normal patty will swell up (if you want it juicy) about the 5th topping your standard bun will become saturated with the toppings, and the entire thing will resemble a pair of soggy baseball gloves holding a baseball of hamburger meat, and with things flying off the edge. In that sense, you are no longer eating a burger. So, how is it different at Altas Horas? First, if you plan to eat something that intense, you will no doubt need something refreshing - at the very least you should have a tropical juice, preferably half-frozen. Altas has a large menu of that. If not, order a Sumol, which is one of the best sodas out there (that is, if you find an overabundance of sugar in other products to be disgusting and would prefer a slight bitterness of sucralose, at least it's lower in calories). If not, get a Guarana soda. Next, you might want to give the appetizers a pass, unless you really like coxinhas (little fried drumsticks of chicken and potato that are frankly delicious, but will ruin your ability to finish the burger). You'll notice that the burgers are quite large. Not thick per se, but large. See, to contain the awesomeness of the tudo, you'll need square footage, and while each layer of food strata might not be thick, it's the overall package that brings awe to your eyes. Next, it's the freshness - the burger patty is fresh, the produce is fresh, as are the corn (not canned) and the potato sticks. And then there is the green sauce, which is downright addictive. Now, I like their X-tudo burger, but the one that has my heart is the X-tudo picanha, which features the sirloin rump cap, known in Brazil as the Queen of the grilled meats. Cut into thick steaks, rubbed with sea salt, and broil until medium rare. Or have it sliced into strips then griddled. It contains some connective tissue, so when you bite into it, it bites back. And as you chew down on every juicy, meaty fatty morsel, you are pelted with corn, crispy potato sticks, the eggs the ham and the cheese - I would say that this is far superior to your run-of-the-mill Philly cheesesteak. I can't think of anything better than that in Ironbound, maybe except...barbecue. Or the pastesis de natas. Or the octopus salad. Well, look, let's just say that when I am in Ironbound, it's one of the many places in my dining repertoire. And for good reason. read more

Great hamburgaos every single time. The bread is soft and gigantic and the chicken is cooked perfectly. This cute little spot is open 24/7 to satisfy your cravings at any hour. My husband and I love the food here. Would also recommend their coxinhas, carrot cake and maracuja juice. Definitely go there over ordering delivery. This is the closest to a Brazilian burger I've ever had in the United States. Since this place is out of the way for me, I've looked for comparable places and no place has come close. The prices here are beyond reasonable, it's open late, and the food is amazing. I definitely make a trip here whenever I'm in NJ. The sweets are great too! I'm glad Steve S. told me about this place. When I first saw the menu, I was skeptical. The only time I've ever seen a banana on a burger is when Ron Swanson was attempting to obey his doctor's orders by eating more potassium. (I only expect you Parks and Rec fans to get that). Because I was intrigued, and because Steve S. ordered it, I went with the banana x-burger. What a creative concoction. I would never cook something like this for myself, but it worked. Between the size of the roll, the meat, the corn, mayo, bananas, and lettuce, all the ingredients synchronized and made for a heavenly taste. And it was just under $6! I also recommend the chicken ball for an appetizer. Only $2. The chicken was a little dry, but if you throw some spinach sauce or Russian dressing on there, that spruces things up a bit. They used a non toasted soft buns, was only my disappointment, but the beef patty and especially the potato chips inside, shredded into pieces and fried as a layer, were thumbs up! I love this place, especially after a night of partying and drinking. It is a great alternative to the usual diner situation. It is usually packed after midnight so seating is super limited. While in Newark for work purposes, I walked around aimlessly looking for some breakfast. I happened to see this place and decided to give them a shot. Small cramped place but clean. I ordered the bacon omelette and an espresso. Eggs were a little over done for my liking but it was still good. There was plenty of bacon as well. The espresso however was great. I would definitely return here anytime I'm craving an espresso. Overall, 4 stars. Their service is good, food is good, and after looking at their menu I'm curious in trying their Brazilian sandwiches. They take cards as well so no need to search for an ATM. They double charge late night clients. Our bill was 94 gratuity was included. We paid in cash and the server says our cash was missing 10 dollars (two people counted it before we gave it to him). No problem we gave a card for the alleged difference. The server charges us 10 dollars plus 3 for gratuity (what!). This place is was gross. Mozzarella sticks so undercooked the bread fell off the block of cheese and no marinara sauce. The fries were not salted. The only good thing was the chocolate ball. I got three of the chicken and cream cheese balls, I've had them in Brazil and they were amazing. There used to be a place on downtown Jersey City that made them good too but that place shut down. I haven't been to this place for probably over 2 years. I don't remember it being not so great. I was kinda disappointed. I had the chicken and egg sandwich. Most of their sandwiches comes with potato sticks lettuce tomato and mayo. The bread was just super dry that it was falling apart. This is a great spot after late night drinking or if you're just simply craving great comfort food late at night because it's open 24 hours! Staffs are very friendly, at least the ones working at the time when I go. I usually park at the lot across the street.
