After seeing a matinee show at Proctor's Theater in Schenectady, we walked down Jay Street and saw Pizza King at the corner of Jay and Franklin Streets. Having been there a few years ago, we were interested in four slices to take home. Where else can you get so many choices of pizza? At least 15 different pizzas with meat or cheese were available as slices today. Even though, the Pizza with Ziti fascinated me, I passed. Garlic Knots were available, and people I know love them. Not our taste -- too greasy. We got the Chicken Marsala and deep dish broccoli slices. Bravo -- Crisp bottom crusts. However, the Chicken slice crust was too thin for the heavy topping -- too much cheese and too little chicken in my opinion. The thicker broccoli pizza was better. But the amount of garlic powder on it overwhelmed the flavor. This review is based on the two varieties of pizza we sampled; consequently, three stars were given. I have heard that Pizza King is a popular downtown place because of the variety of pizzas available by slice. Service is quick and efficient. I just don't get it. This place is usually highly recommended but my experiences are very hit or miss. Last Saturday night at dinner time (6PM), I came here with a friend to get some pizza before an event at Proctors. When we walked in, there were 13 pizzas lined up in the case. Some were brand new, several were down to their last slice, and most were somewhere in between. Normally, this would be a great situation. Not that night! Out of the 13 pizzas, only two had red sauce. One was a meat lovers pizza, and the other was a single slice of their thick crust (perhaps a take on deep dish) meat lovers pizza. That's it. Oh, they had plenty of white pizza: garlic broccoli; white ziti alfredo; spinach; three cheese; a pizza with ricotta and slices of whole tomatoes; etc. Some were regular thin crust, many were that thick crust/deep dish I mentioned earlier. Some were down to their last slice, and others were brand new. Now, I will eat white pizza now and then, but to have 85% of your offerings during dinner time be white is stupid. I got a slice of the meat lovers and it was decent. Not great, not bad. However, either the cook really needs to rethink the variety of pizzas they are going to put out or else Schenectady has gone "all white" for pizza and I missed the memo. read more

We were pretty pleasantly surprised by Pizza King. Judging purely from the appearance when we walked into the store, our expectations were low. And although the pizza was pretty good, the establishment was definitely lacking. It was really kind of eerily quiet. There was no TV or music playing for background noise, and it felt very awkward in the store because of it. Also of the 5 tables we walked past to eat at, only one of them was cleaned off (and they weren't very busy at all). There were flies buzzing around the establishment which I can't blame them too much for as it is summertime, but it just had a kind of "icky" vibe. That's unfortunately the best way I can put it. Despite all of that though, I give them props for their pizzq. The dough was like fresh baked bread and the crust held up pretty well with the weight of the toppings -which is hard to find! We've only ever ordered by the slice here, and then for emergency snacks for the kids when on Jay Street during odd hours. The plus here is they have 15 or 16 types of pizza ready for slices. It's New York style with an array of toppings, and it's all pretty standard. Drink options are limited to fountain plus some bottled stuff. They have a full range of sandwiches and pasta dishes, but I haven't had the stomach to try them, in part because, yes (see picture) the menu has been literally spattered with somebody's dinner both times we went in. Very good pizza place even if the quality has gone down a little since the original Pizza King ran the show. My biggest complaint is that at lunch they seem to almost never have the staple pizza slices like pepperoni, pepperoni and sausage, etc but have an abundance of the more "exotic" ones featuring shrimp and other toppings you wouldn't typically see on a pizza.
