Aiello's Pizza in Shadyside finally got checked off my list after a friend who regularly goes to…read moretheir Allison Park location recommended it - and after going in I can see why he considers it one of his favorite pizza spots around Pittsburgh. The location on Murray Avenue has this storefront that is beautifully lit at night. Walking in, the first thing you notice is the incredible smell of the pizza. There was also plenty of seating with lots of clean tables, a large TV, surround sound music, and an impressive selection of bottled beverages, including a few nonalcoholic options along with an impressively larger selection of alcoholic drinks. Another big plus for me is that they sell pizza by the slice since I usually only want one slice instead of ordering a whole pie. One thing to know before you go is that they're cash only. They do have an ATM inside, but it charges a $3 fee. If you'd rather avoid that, there's also a PNC ATM about a six minute walk away. Since we went the day after Pickles-burgh we had to try the specialty pickle pizza for that day. It was topped with provolone, cheddar, ranch, bacon, dill, and, of course, pickles. As someone who absolutely loves pickles, I actually thought they used a little more pickle than the pizza needed, which is saying something. I ended up taking a few off and eating them separately. That said, the perfectly crispy bacon more than made up for it. The combination of the bacon, cheese, ranch, and pickle flavor was still fantastic. I really hope they continue offering pizzas with that perfectly crispy bacon because they absolutely nailed it. Another thing Aiello's really gets right is the texture of the pizza. When they reheat the slices, the cheese becomes beautifully crisp around the edges, and the crust strikes a great balance. It has just the right amount of oil, not greasy but not dry either, with a slight chew, a little sponginess from the yeast dough, and an overall texture that I really enjoyed. The ranch deserves its own mention. It definitely didn't taste like bottled ranch, which I'm usually not a fan of. It tasted homemade and paired really well with the pizza. I also had a taste of the traditional cheese, the white pizza, and the double stuffed meat slice. My favorite was easily the double stuffed meat because it was loaded with flavor and appeared the most filling. My second favorite was the pickle pizza because the crispy bacon and cheese paired so well with the pickle flavor. The white pizza came in third with its nice garlic flavor, while the traditional cheese was solid but didn't stand out quite as much as the specialty slices. Overall, Aiello's definitely lived up to the recommendation of my friend. If you're in the mood for specialty pizzas with a great crust and enjoy being able to grab a slice instead of committing to a whole pie, this is absolutely a place worth stopping by.

Let me say this is a really good pizza, depending on what you get. I would give the crispness of…read morethe crust a 4/5 stars; especially on the stuffed meat pizza. The pizza had a really nice crunch and cris. The crust was, also, seasoned for one or more of my slices; that was really good. I was not a fan of their white pizza; maybe it was the cheese but it had a "dank" flavor (2/5). Their Margherita was good, but not great (3/5). Their stuffed meat pizza was delicious...it was the favorite of all the slices we got (4/5). The pizza came out really hot and they were fast (5/5). They have been on my list for a while and we finally got to try them. I would still put Mineos ahead

Expansive Pittsburgh pizza dynasty with the maximum cheese allowed for proper pizza proportions…read more I love Mineo's. Big member of their fan club. We drive out from Monroeville just to grab their pies. Located in Squirrel Hill, parking can be a bit of a challenge, but there is a pay-to-park lot across the street tucked behind the businesses. Also, with old school class, Mineo's is cash only. They do have an ATM right in the store - in case you forgot. Dynasty loading - as they now have 4 shops including one directly in the Pittsburgh Airport (check their updated box logos with an airplane flying around!) All day. All year. Always- I would think to give Mineo's five stars, but this order was disappointing. The crust was over floured and lifeless, the cheese was missing the signature flavor pack of herbs, and the toppings were very clumped together under the cheese... but even these nitpicks- this place is a must go to! We ordered three large (and yes, that's a large large) pizzas - mushroom, extra cheese, and pepperoni. They are renowned for their thick layer of cheese with the toppings buried beneath. And this time, all of the pieces were well cut - which is rare. Service was quick. They know how to move through the takeout orders and even if they don't, pull up a seat and enjoy the theater of pizza making that you can witness in the expansive dining area.

Last night my brother and I, along with a friend, made my obligatory visit. It wasn't hard to convince them to go for a pizza; they're also fans of the place. (They are both locals.) We ordered a small pizza with half pepperoni and half onions. Unfortunately, after waiting the typical 20 minutes, they got the order wrong. Instead of onions, they added mushrooms. My brother went up to the counter to report the topping error. They were so amenable to making things right, they agreed to add the onions. In addition, they offered him two complimentary Orange Crush sodas. The pizza was great as usual, and we all enjoyed the experience. For the first time, they started accepting credit cards, with a 15% fee. (I had already taken out some cash to pay for the pizza, since they previously had a cash-only policy. Now it's more convenient.) It's not a fancy place, but they have both counter and booth seating.
