I've often walked by Pitsfield Cafe so I decided to stop in this past October. It's located on the first floor lobby of the ornate building which is cool since we sat outside of the tiny restaurant. We both ordered skillets and they were okay - your standard diner style breakfast. There's a charm to the inside of the restaurant and being in an old building is fun. This is genuinely the worst breakfast place I've ever been to - no one came for 25 minutes before the waitress complained about being overwhelmed. Ordered the steak and eggs - steak was supposed to be medium but was well done and so fatty that it could not be cut. Eggs and hash browns were undercooked and the coffee was burnt. For an old school style diner, this one was pretty cool. Our wait person was really sweet and able to make our experience great. You walk into the Pittsfield building and go back in time as you make your way across the room to the diner. A smattering of tables are available outside the actual diner area, adding a romantic ambiance to your meal. I don't mean romance, but it just has a feeling when the ceiling is carved stone and about 80 feet up complete with a chandelier. Food was pretty much what you expect at any good diner, basic and unadorned, but still tasty. We would be back here for sure if we lived in the neighborhood. read more

Perfect classic diner for breakfast. We were seated quickly and staff were nice. Food came quickly, hot and large portions. Menu has everything you would want for breakfast or lunch. Came here after taking an exam for work in the morning simply because I am always passing it but never have had the time to actually stop and get some food. What a shame I never did it sooner. It's your typical breakfast comfort food but a couple of things really stood out: 1. its in a pretty awesome building, lots of fun architecture 2. VERY affordable 3. biting into the pancakes really brought me back when I was a kid and my parents would make me some pancakes in the morning. Very nostolgic. Cute little place between some gorgeous 1800 buildings. They have both indoor and "outdoor" seating (which is really inside but in the lobby between buildings with patio tables so it kinda feels "outside"). It didn't take long to seat us when everything else had a wait. They had a small menu but the food was excellent, as was the service. Prompt without being overbearing. They weren't crowded, so we chatted with our friend for a long time and never felt pushed or rushed. read more

This building has history and was built in the late 1920's I can only speak on the cafe . Great service, the hostess was nice and our waiter was very attentive. Food came out quick and everything was delicious ! Next time I'm in Chicago we'll be coming back . The cafe doesn't have anything fancy or updated . Beautiful little spot inside the mostly empty Pittsfield building. They have a large selection of Benedict dishes, which is my favorite, so that's a plus. The Hollandaise sauce appears to be homemade, and is delicious. The coffee drinks are also quite good. Our server was very helpful when we asked for recommendations and directions. I'm deducting one star for the ghost town like ambiance. A trip to the ladies room in a very deserted part of the building was border line terrifying. read more

What a find!! We were visiting Chicago and this cafe was very close to our hotel and it is in a magnificent old building with so many architectural details and design. The restaurant has seating in the open archway area and in the restaurant itself. They let you seat yourself. Totally casual and very inviting. The service is great! Everyone was very friendly and patient with special orders and requests. The home made hash browns were perfect. Their pancakes were much more than basic, but classic! There are many omelets to choose from and all the food arrives hot, quick and tasty! Great place to linger or get a really quick bite. Reasonable prices and wonderful ambience! A must! In the heart of downtown Chicago, a five minute walk from the Palmer Hotel, this trendy café sits nestled within the atrium of an office building and is a wonderful place for breakfast. Accessing the menu involves an iPhone, suggesting the younger nature of the crowd, but the old world setting in a century old building nicely contrasts the youthful guests. Breakfast for five people, with coffee and tea and every manner of breakfast food, cost $100, which I consider quite reasonable considering the excellent service and great food and unbeatable location. Wandering into this ornate architectural gem for the first time in years, we were delighted to stumble across the café - tucked away in the inner lobby courtyard - and decided to stay for lunch. When I worked downtown years ago, the Pittsfield Building Coffee Shop occupied this space. This plus a restaurant on the lower level (called Doolittle's) were then part of the Faber Restaurant chain. Faber's and Doolittle's are long gone and many of the tenant floors have been vacated for repurposing to residential use. Like its predecessor, the café is a classic old-school diner complete with counter/stool and booth seating. Additional seating spills out into the enclosed courtyard. The reasonably-priced comfort food menu features breakfast and lunch standards. I enjoyed a French dip sandwich and my Missus devoured her tuna melt. Very good, and if you're not in the mood for potatoes, they will gladly substitute cottage cheese or fresh fruit. This spot is a welcome alternative to the fast food and fast-casual chains that dominate Loop-area dining. read more

Hostess was brusk and unhelpful. Sausages with my breakfast were merely lukewarm. Too bad such a charming ambience is ruined by a rude hostess and mediocre food. On the plus side, my waitress was cheerful. I've eaten here several times (it's convenient to my work) and tried to give them multiple chances but always leave disappointed and grumpy. The best thing about this place is their efficiency. Arrived at 10am on a Sunday, waited about 15 mins. The building is hot but there are fans at the tables. Seated and served coffee, water, juice right away. Shortly there after they took the order and probably waited another 15 mins for food. My avocado Benedict was warm but subpar. The English muffin was hardly toasted. Hashbrowns were not fully cooked either. I guess if you're looking for food that's a step above fast food and served quickly then it's a good choice for you. read more

Experience: I've been here a couple years ago with a party of two and it wasn't bad back then. However, this recent visit was absolutely horrible. With a party of three, it took forever to be seated. This would be understandable if it was busy, but the thing is, it wasn't. There was barely anyone there, but yet they refused to acknowledge us. After finally being seated, it took about 35 minutes for someone to take out order. I don't know what happened because I did like this place. Parking: It's downtown Chicago, so parking may be very difficult to find. If you are trying to find free spots, that would be impossible. I suggest paying by meter or spot hero. I would also consider only going here if you are by it. It's not worth just the visit. Worth: Honestly, the food is good and the venue is awesome. It is definitely a gem. I arrived around 11am for some breakfast. It was sort of a busy Saturday & there were literally 2 waitresses. They have inside seating and outside which is super cute. I was told to sit outside. So it took a VERY VERY VERY long time for anyone to even ask me for my drink order. I didn't take it to heart because I asked a waitress and she let me know that she was the only one working the outside seating at the time. So around 30 minutes later, maybe even more I was asked for my order. I ordered French toast and it came with eggs and sausage links. I also ordered their fresh orange juice. The food actually came out quite fast so it sort of made up for the long wait in the beginning. The French toast was quiet delicious tbh and the orange juice was SUPER fresh. It has pulp in it because its literally squeezed from fresh oranges. Overall I would recommend trying Pittsfield Cafe, but go on a not so busy day . This place is neatly tucked inside of a building filled with history. It took us a minute to get served, but once we were finally acknowledged, the food came out rather swiftly. The food was good, hot and reasonable. They do charge a .79 surcharge if you pay with a credit card that they don't tell you about--they kind of just slide it on the the ticket. Food was really good. The pastrami sandwich and the chicken Parmesan had an amazing flavor and was an amazing lunch. Coleslaw and pickle were room temperature instead of cold. Service was quick and our server was extremely kind to us. I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant itself.
