We finally checked out Pittsfield Cafe. I'd heard about it a few times but always forgot, mostly because I'd never just stumble onto this place, it's tucked inside the building in a way that you kinda have to know it's there. Total hidden gem. The whole "outdoor seating but indoors" thing is pretty cool. Feels real old-school, like a little golden-era corner that somehow survived. It was packed, but we still got seated right away, and the staff was super welcoming. I ordered the French toast combo. Two sunny-side-up eggs, two big sausage links, and two thick slices of French toast. I thought it would be just a normal breakfast, nothing crazy, but man... those sausage links stole the show. Came for breakfast. I was looking for a spot open on Memorial Day for breakfast after 11am near my hotel on Michigan and Washington. This was 1.5blocks away. I'm pretty simple. Scrambled eggs, bacon and hash browns. The food was hot and served super fast. I think they might use lard for cooking, not 100% sure on that but my eggs were slightly greasy which I'm not used to. They were fine though. The service was fast, waiter checked in to make sure the food was good and also to refill beverages. The menu is very large for a little cafe. Wish they had waffles but I knew they didn't before going (looked at the menu online). read more

Not worth the wait. The service was ok, but slow and inattentive. The food was...not great. My "bacon creamy cheesy" grits...were DRY and just had some shredded cheese thrown in to it. My extra crispy hash browns in my skillet heap...limp. Not in a hurry to come back and definitely would not wait in any line to try it again. read more

At first glance I loved this building and its art deco vibe. It is visually beautiful. Long wait to be seated. We noticed that after we ordered several people around us got who were seated well after us got their food before ours came out. I'm not sure why that happened but our server came and said they were backed up in the kitchen. When the food came out it was a HUGE serving size. Then I noticed on closer inspection that my hash browns ordered extra crispy were soggy and not even a little crispy. My omelette was loaded with jalapeño peppers but very little cheese. Nothing was seasoned at all. The guy filling/refilling the coffee was great. He kept our cups full the entire time which was great because the water here tastes like it came out of a moldy hose. With so many options in the area I would be hesitant to come back. Maybe an off day??? However, they were so busy so maybe people are into what they get here. read more

I had heard about the Pittsfield Cafe and decided to seek it out when we were recently downtown. The restaurant is inside an office building off of Jewelers Row so unless you know about it you probably wouldn't come across it. The restaurant is a small diner but they have a nice seating area in the lobby of the building which has a lot of gothic revival architecture. The menu is full of your usual breakfast place options. My meal came out pretty fast and was very tasty. With tax my total was around $16.00. Located in the lower lobby of the Pittsfield apartments, the location is close to millennium park and Michigan avenue. The architecture of the building itself is gorgeous and if you can get seating in the 'patio' seating you can enjoy it. The servers were friendly and accommodating. It was very busy throughout the duration of our meal but we got just the right amount of attention. We ordered a Bacon Blue Burger and Eggs Benedict. Both were great, fresh, and delicious. The menu is large and they serve breakfast for their entire service (7am-3pm). read more

Decent place. Good prices, fast service, food is decent. Main problems are it smells out in the lobby. Also, they never bring out bread rolls unless you ask for them, and even then they are cheap and only bring you one, sometimes they charge you for it. Most greek-owned diners give you bread with your meal. Finally, the old man owner has disappeared after Covid. Apparently spends time in Florida. His son, who runs the place, keeps him away from there so he "doesn't get sick". Bring back the old man!!! It gives the customer comfort that everything is good. This is a great place to have breakfast downtown, particularly on a weekend. Although busy, service was prompt, thanks to the kitchen and Angela's efforts. Sat at my usual stool two years after my last visit. I just love this place. The exterior looks like a condemned building, but Pittsfield Diner is inside and tucked into a bright, lively corner of a dark, austere atrium. French toast and three slices of bacon with orange juice. Just right for a Sunday breakfast. Total came to over $25. And that's too much for two bread slices frenched and three thin slices of bacon, but it was the glass of orange juice that broke me at $6.29. Ouch. I've got to fill a star for that. I do remember it being overwhelmingly spicy but I could never find the name of it until my parents reminded me what was nearby. While in Chicago, our hotel did not have very good breakfast. So we looked for alternatives. Nearby, there are few small little coffee/pastry shops. And the one we tried, I won't even spend time reviewing. So this morning, we walked a little farther, and decided to try Pittsfield Cafe. To be honest, it looked like a standard diner, but it was in a really cool building and I'm an architect, so, why not? Since we had such mediocre breakfasts, I didn't bother to take a picture. But we ordered the South of the Border omelette. It was actually quite good. The jalapeños gave it a good kick and it was very tasty. The wheat toast was decent. The coffee mediocre (when asked if we want cream in our coffee, we often say "not if it's good". We used cream). But we are coffee snobs, so temper that remark with that piece of information. The service was excellent. Our server was friendly, attentive, but not overbearing. Overall, it was a nice breakfast. We would recommend going here. read more

This is an OK breakfast place and it's close to Michigan Avenue to the location is very convenient. The service is quick and the food is so so. The omelette was nice and tasty but pretty light on the gyro meat. It definitely needed salt. The avocado toast wasn't the greatest, but it wasn't terrible. They use Ryebread and it was not toasted so it was kind of soggy and soft. It also needed salt. As far as eggs, what is there to? Eggs are eggs, but the presentation wasn't the greatest, especially when they popped the yolk before it was delivered. The location and setup of Pittsfield Cafe is awesome, it brings me back to Europe and also Hong Kong indoor-multi-use urban work and play spaces. Definitely worth a visit to enjoy the building and be taken back to a different age. People were lounging on the cafe seats, reading, studying, and enjoying their lunches. My co-worker enjoyed his lunch omelette, with a generous portion of hash browns and toast. I ordered a pastrami Reuben, which came with a good-sized portion of crispy crinkle fries and a tiny container of coleslaw. My sandwich was sort of disappointing, with a barely adequate cross-section of meat, cheese, and sour-kraut. The meat itself was pretty bland, and may have been mistaken for Jewel roast beef, instead of thick-cut or thin-cut, well-seasoned pastrami one might find at a deli. The grilled rye bread was decent enough, and I left full. The Russian dressing was also served in a small plastic cup, not on the sandwich. Our bill came out to $50 for two items, including a normally generous tip, which stung. Service was decent, I may come back to try some other items, but I really had high hopes for the Reuben. read more

The "Pittsfield Cafe," as the name suggests, locates in the Pittsfield Building. However, where is it at? My co-worker and I were looking for a "sit-down" type of breakfast join but an inexpensive one. We googled it and found this one on the map. We were trying to find the place along Lake St. and almost missed it! The building itself was surrounded by scaffold. It didn't look abandoned yet it was quite inconspicuous. "Pittsfield Cafe," nevertheless, was legit. Perhaps this would be a hold-in-the-wall for some people. I wouldn't say it was for me because everything was held together just fine. Their menu was beyond "extensive," from typical western breakfast items to burgers and to pasta. Everything was priced fairly for the city standard. I kept it simple and ordered "steak and eggs." It was done correctly in my opinion. The steak was somewhat chewy. I expected that since it wasn't anything fancy and I just wanted some hearty protein in my diet. My co-worker received a generous amount of cheesy grits. It was a side order! The server and busser continued to top off our coffee, iced tea, and water. For those who would like to sit in the "patio," there was none outside. It was extended to the actual restaurant and at the open space inside the building atrium. That area had too much echo, so it would be good for solo diners. My co-worker and I talked a lot (gossip??), so we made a right choice to sit near the kitchen. For those want to be economical yet love to enjoy some unlimited diner coffee and breakfast like a good American does, check "Pittsfield Cafe" out. I won't recommend driving and coming from anywhere far. If one happens to be in downtown Chicago and feels hungry, I believe it will be a pleasurable experience by coming here. read more

I got a Reuben and the corned beef was way too fatty for me. So that was a real disappointment. The soup was cream of chicken rice, and it was clearly milk based but also kind of thin. Like they didn't add flour or cornstarch or some other thickening agent. There may well be folks who like it that way, but unfortunately I'm not one so that too was disappointing. Most of the meal ended up abandoned. I might be willing to try it again and get something else, or do breakfast. If I was in the area, that is. I do work a few blocks away but with so many dining options it's pretty unlikely I'll stop in here again anytime soon. read more

I feel like this is a hidden gem restaurant in Chicago's Loop. It's inside of the Pittsfield Building, so there's no overt storefront for people to realize there's a restaurant there. Portions are large and the food is quite good. It's also a nice atmosphere and a chance to see inside of one of the historic skyscrapers in the Loop. read more

From the burger being hard as a hockey puck, to the fries no longer being crinkle cut (despite the images of such everywhere on the menu) and then eggs being poorly cooked. The food was great! Nothing pretentious, but you feel like you're going back in time, to the late 1920's. We had a Reuben sandwich and a bagel and lox platter. They were both reasonably priced and delicious. The location is right across the street from the Chicago cultural Center (was the Chicago Public Library, which is free and has an INCREDIBLE interior, complete with a Tiffany glass dome. Do not even waste your time coming to this place. Unless you actually have horrible taste or just enjoy food that sucks, keep walking past this place. We waited about an hour total for this experience to be OVER. Once I saw the biscuits with gravy, I knew that it was going to be some of the worst food that I've ever eaten. Cold, canned biscuits. Lifeless gravy. My man ordered a grilled cheese and I'm not kidding... I was making better grilled cheeses when I was 3 years old. Thanks for the white bread and slices of Kraft cheese Sh*tsfield Cafe. Clearly they haven't updated the quality of their food since the place opened in 1920 or whatever.
