First impression was that the color scheme, decorations, and menu all seemed to be dated and uninspired. The staff were polite and attentive. I ordered the salad and Salmon Oscar. The salad was good and the blue cheese dressing I chose was house-made. It was good. My girlfriend got the wedge salad which I think was a bit expensive since it was a $6 up charge for a wedge of iceberg lettuce from the standard salad that came with the entrees. My Salmon Oscar with asparagus was very good. I enjoyed every bite of the salmon and crab. My daughter's chicken parm came with a ton of linguini. My girlfriend got the signature crab cakes which she said were mostly crab and not filler. So while I thought the menu was dated when reading it the food was well executed.

My wedding soup and my husband's French onion soup were delicious. The wedding soup was loaded with meatballs and chicken. My husband has a thing for French onion soup and tries it every chance he gets. He said this may have been the best ever. We split a Reuben sandwich and upgraded to onion rings. The waitress brought us each a half portion so we didn't have to divide it ourselves, which was nice. There was plenty of meat on the sandwich, making it acceptable, not great but good enough. Onion rings were very good. Dessert sounded tempting, a cherry crème brûlée. It was okay, kind of like cherry jello with a sugar crust on top. A bit disappointing to say the least. Our waitress was on top of filling the water glasses and was very nice. Now for the bad news and why I'm only giving 3 stars. I went to the ladies room before eating and there was no hot water to wash my hands. I asked my husband if the men's room had hot water and he said no. We both let it run but it never got hot, not even warm. Then I noticed (after drinking several glasses of water unfortunately) that there was a crack in my water glass. I mentioned it to my husband and he said, "you should see the chips in the glass tabletop over her on my side". I get it that wear and tear happens, but these things should be caught before serving guests. And as far as the hot water...how do servers and kitchen workers properly clean their hands after using the toilet without hot water? So the food is fairly solid and reasonably priced. But be on the lookout for chipped glassware and table tops. And use your own hand sanitizer if you have it!

We happen to be in the area so after about three years of avoiding them, I said why not give them another try. The food was absolutely fantastic and the service was exceptional. It had a pleasant ambiance you could actually have a great conversation without excessive noise. I ordered the fish dinner and did they ever redeem themselves. It was no longer like Mrs. Paul's frozen fish, two very nice meaty breaded filet served with French fries that were hot and crispy cooked just right. Great snap when you crunched them. The breading on the fish was not overpowering and the fish itself was large and robust with the flavor of fresh caught cod. I was very impressed. Our waitress Caleigh who was wonderful. She was very attentive and checked on us regularly. I think Max & Erma's finally got it right. I certainly give them a standing ovation on this one.

Max & Erma's went from a quaint downtown restaurant to a decent regional chain with pretty reasonable prices. This location was convenient for a bunch of people coming from different directions. They make a great Long Island Iced Tea (not as good as Carl's Tavern, but who does?) and also has some pretty good food. We got some of their fried pickles as an appetizer and wow, they were really good. They could have been bigger pieces of pickle, but they were crispy and not soggy at all. I ordered the Pittsburgh Salad with Grilled Chicken and ranch dressing and it was delicious. Everyone else enjoyed their meals, the service was good and the final bill for all of us didn't break the bank. I'd go back!

It is great to have a place that serves upscale food but isn't stuffy and pretentious. Service is always friendly and efficient. I love that they have a rotating seasonal menu. It is on the higher end price wise, but you get what you pay for. And that means nice portions, quality ingredients and excellent taste. If you are looking for a place for a great date night or a special occasion, this is a perfect place.

Got a Pinot noir wine and waters Starter=soup of the day: tomato w/ chickpea and chorizo- bold tomato flavor and lots of arugula in it. Not so much chorio but flavor was very good, not overly salty. 10/10 After the soup we put our nit-picking goggles on as we knew this was a pretty sophisticated meal. Daily special- pan seared mahi mahi with asparagus fennel kohlabi and arugula salad citrus buerre Blanc. Light citrus flavor is found thru the mahi mahi, its sauce and the salad. Very congruent. Asparagus was a neutral addition. Not flowing with or against the mahi. Fish was cooked well. Just lots of raw red onion on the salad was a little overpowering. 7/10 Red wine braised short rib- didn't ask how well done, so seems chefs choice. We have a preference towards med rare. This was cooked well done making it a tad tough-stringy. Mashed potatoes with some larger pieces of potato, but very neutral plain flavor, great with the beef sauce. Carrots cooked well, just neutral, natural flavor. Overall a very classic flavor combo that works.7/10. Would stop by again to try more dishes. Ps- when paying we noticed final bill to sign was more than first bill at table. When we asked why the difference we were told it's the credit card fee of $3. This was really the first time I've seen this at a restaurant, yet alone at a decent place like one. Would have been best for them to tell us this upfront.

It has stood up through the test of time and I'm glad to see the business continues to flourish. Their food is tasty and beer is cold but what makes this place stand out from the rest is the people. The staff who works there is always polite and attentive. You can find the two brothers who manage the place often times laughing and conversing with patrons at the bar whenever they are not hustling and helping out with running orders to tables. The atmosphere feels like you're getting a hug from a friendly neighbor as a familiar face is not far away. While getting a spot at the bar on a Friday or Saturday night can be tough, don't fret because there is ample seating in the back room or on the open/closed porch (depending on the weather). The location is clutch. There is a Shop N Save across the street if you decide to get groceries. Need gas? There's a gas station two buildings up. Need more beer for after the bar? There's a beer distributor attached to the gas station! Need your car worked on? There's an auto shop next door! Drop your vehicle off and stop in to Carl's while you wait! Simply put, the place is a classic!
