We found Pita Stop when we had to be in Birmingham for a medical appointment. The food was so delicious on that first visit that we have been to eat there every appointment since then which I think is about five times. Everything, and I mean everything, is outstanding. We are working our way through the appetizer list and, so far, the mushrooms are the favorite, just ahead of the combination plate. We have tried the vegetable kabob platter, falafel platter, rack of lamb, salmon platter, Beirut omelette, vegetable omelet, seafood omelette, seafood kabob platter and we have not been disappointed once. We have also had the Turkish coffee and baklava. We probably will not get through the entire menu before our appointments finish but Pita Stop will be top of our eating places when we are in Birmingham. The service is great, the staff are attentive but do not hover. On our first visit we were seated in an area with a large, very loud group. That would have been ok until one of the guests at the table kept coughing. I was very uncomfortable and stood up to ask to be reseated. I didn't even need to ask. The waiter picked up our menus and reseated us in a much quieter, more private area. I was quite impressed with that and appreciated it. read more

I love Mediterranean food whether it be Al's or Purple Onion. All three are within a 0.5 mile radius. The Pita Stop is a more upscale version of these other two places as the inside promotes finer dining, silverware, and a wait staff. My friend and I weren't too hungry so we shared the grilled chicken plate with humus and a salad. It was tasty. If you are going on a date, or having a rather nice dinner with parents/friends then you should come to the Pita Stop. If you're eating alone, grabbing a quick bite, or in pajamas, I would say go to Al's. read more

I rarely give 5 stars. You have to earn 5 stars, and Pita Stop does just that. I have loved this place from the first time I've walked in. They are warm and welcoming, and that's before you even taste the food! My favorite is the grouper, but I love the chicken and the various kabobs also. Most of their dishes come out in a pyrex dish which is pretty unique. And they have a homemade dressing for their salad that is so good you could probably eat it by itself with a spoon. Haha. Mo, one of the servers, will remember your name, and your favorite dish, and always checks to make sure you have everything you need. This is my first time eating at Pita stop. I went with some co-workers to try this location for some Mediterranean food. They have a lunch special and I decided to try their chicken special (also, many reviews raving about the chicken) . It comes with marinated chicken, wild pilaf rice, side salad, pita bread and Hummus. I was a little disappointed on my chicken, because it was sort of dry and not a lot of seasoning to it, especially for being chicken tenderloin, that can be a hit or miss. I really loved the hummus, which is nothing compared to the store bought, it was very creamy and had just enough amount of seasoning to it, and it was not bland nor had an overpowering ingredient. I would definitely come back to get me some hummus with pita bread. Overall the meal was generous and filling. As for my dessert, I ordered the Baklava. For those that don't know what a Baklava is, it is a pastry layered with chopped nuts and covered with a syrup. I really liked that it was not fully covered in syrup, which did not make it overly sweet. It did not seem very busy during lunch hour, and did not take long to get our plates. At first the name throws you off and almost makes you think pita sandwich shop. However this is anything but. The food is served to you in Pyrex dishes and it goes end to end. The hummus may be the best I've ever had. It was smooth and creamy and dreamy. Our table got the Blacken Redfish, Beef Kebabs, and Seafood Omelette. Everything was outstanding. They have a full bar, signature drinks and the martinis were served perfectly. The place still is casual but the food is upscale. When in Birmingham make sure to give this place a try. So ate here due to all I had heard about it. So my wife and I ate here before I went to work. It is a quiet candle lit restaurant with a slight cafe feel. We started with a order of hummus and soft pita. The hummus was smooth and delicious some of the best I've had. I had a beef kabob plate and my wife got the seafood kabob plate. Each plate comes with Mediterranean rice, salad, small serving of hummus, soft pita, and fruit. The beef kabob tasted so good!!!! Blast to your mouth with flavor as was the seafood kabob. The seafood kabob came with some scallops, amberjack, grouper, and shrimp. The beef kabob came with what seem to be chuck roast beef, onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes. We finished with a slice of chocolate cake and slice of cheesecake which was good but a little to rich. My only complaint was the serving size of meat for the price isn't great. I really do hate sharing this horrible experience. We tried to get dinner before a 7:00 performance at the Aly Stevens Center, but we walked out before we received our food! We waited a full 45 minutes after placing our order, and our food never arrived. Two parties (larger than us) arrived well after we had placed our order. Those parties were seated, ordered, and served while we were still waiting on our ham and cheese omelet and a beef kabob plate. The restaurant was busy, but not full and it was obvious that everyone was trying to make the same show. What made this situation worst was the lack of any attention or communication from our waiter. I had to stop him several times, and literally stick my head into the kitchen to try to get an update. I got to sample Pita Stop's version of Chicken Kabob yesterday. I got the green salad, the hummus with pita bread, the rice pilaf, and the fruit, with baklava for dessert. Overall impression: excellent! Specifics follow... -the chicken was moist and tender, seasoned nicely and grilled perfectly -the onion, mushroom, cherry tomato, and bell pepper on the skewer were grilled just right -the rice pilaf was moist -the salad had a nice variety of ingredients, beyond the usual seen in other similar restaurants , and was fresh -the fruit was sweet and fresh and varied -the hummus was creamy and very tasty...yummy! -the pita was moist and invited hummus-dipping -the baklava was flaky, sweet, and delicious! You can eat very well here with the basic steak kabob or seafood kabob, or if you want something a little nicer, there are options that way as well. The hostess also comes by each table to ensure all your expectations were met. The entree sizes are humongous and are served in giant glass dishware meant for baking a casserole. My Greek salad was pretty pathetic with wilted greens, ONE olive, ONE cube of feta, a tomato slice, and some red onions. Not very impressive haha! This is a good local Mediterranean restaurant. As one reviewer said, it is unpretentious and affordable. The portions are large and you can come out from lunch for under $10. The place is larger than one might imagine, and there was plenty of seating at lunch time. I like the servers and staff. They were attentive and helpful. One should also note that there is sufficient free parking. I had the pita (falafel) sandwich, which came with a little side of hummus and tabouli. The Pita Stop Cafe is an excellent place to get some authentic Mediterranean/Lebanese food at a reasonable price and great environment. The name of the establishment really doesn't do the place justice. It's a very nice/clean restaurant with plenty of space (I'm sure it's busy during the day with UAB nearby) and attentive wait staff. All the plates come with a salad, rice pilaf, pita and hummus, and fruit. The falafel was very well prepared and was definitely worth the cost. The chicken kabob was some of the best I've tasted. The dinner menu is a little pricey for college students (over $10 easy per person), but considering how much food you get and how good it is, it's definitely worth it. I don't know if it's always like this, but it was quite cool inside, so consider bringing a jacket! read more

Great for lunch or a quiet dinner. I have been eating at the Pita Stop since 1981, and recently my husband and I decided to in to Birmingham to celebrate our 37th Anniversary at our favorite Mediterranean restaurant. We had a great meal and it reminded me that in all the years we have gone there we have never had a bad meal. The Pita Stop is usually crowded at lunch with folks from the nearby hospital and the rest of UAB, but the food is just as good at night, when things may seem slow if an event is not going on nearby. Although the Pita Stop has tripled in size from when we first started eating there, the decor is simple, but the staff is excellent. This is a place to go for great food, in a comfortable atmosphere. I joined a friend at The Pita Stop recently after many, many years since my last visit. We had the daily special. I had the kafta and my friend had the falafel. It came with a greek salad (loads of feta, yum!), rice pilaf, pita wedges, and hummus. The rice was okay, but nothing special. The pita was very fresh and tasty. The hummus was creamy, but there was not a discernable tahini taste. They placed a ramiken of dressing on the table for the salad, but it was impossible to combine the oil floating on top and the good stuff at the bottom. The result? A mostly oily mess. Why not provide a shaker bottle on the table? Now on to the main event. The falafel balls were crispy and done very well (according to my friend). The kafta was a mixture of beef & lamb balls which were smashed a bit and cooked on a skewer. The smashed balls were topped with what tasted and looked like provolone. WTF? They were a bit dry and would have benefited from a bit of tsaziki sauce. The place was packed and it's bigger than it looks from the outside. Parking is minimal so probably most of the customers walk from the surrounding UAB area. All in all, it was a serviceable meal, but not so memorable that I'm dying to go back anytime soon. read more
