This was one of my favorite places to go while I was in college at Penn State and now every time I visit I have to go back. I love getting the rice place with falafel and then picking from the wide variety of veggie toppings that they have! It is a great option for vegans and non vegans! Did delivery last night. Prompt delivery. VERY Generous portions. Very nicely marinated and properly cooked chicken. Shredded lettuce under the Falafel patties was pretty gross (brown and slimy) - threw out the lettuce immediately. Falafel was suppose to come with tahini, but came with nothing. Shishtawook platter was supposed to come with hummus, but came with tahini instead - so we used that tahini for the falafel. I actually didn't hate the food. My husband came for lunch a few days ago and was appreciating the hummus so much that I wanted to try this place before I leave state college. We went their for dinner and there was one other couple eating apart from us. My husband was disappointed from the hummus as he felt it didn't have the same flavors. Probably, it was fresh that day or somebody else made it. Anyways, I would have liked the place if the person making my falafel sandwich wasn't angry and throwing my food every time on the table. We happened upon Pita Cabana a couple of years ago. I was nervous about finding something I'd like, but WOW, do they have wonderful choices! They're sandwiches are customizable with so many great choices! I love their chicken, and my husband loves their lamb. They have very reasonable prices for the amount of food you get. Its like a chipotle but middle eastern/Mediterranean. Instead of a tortilla wrap you can use a pita wrap. The meats and the veggies are all marinated differently but the concept is the same. You can get a pita for 8 bux and it comes out pretty huge enough for a meal and a half for sure. I didnt like the lamb so much but the sojuk was bomb. The WORST customer service I have ever received. The person upfront was rude, unhelpful, and argumentative to us from the second we walked in. Argued about what came with our meal (claimed that pita didn't come with the platter when it says so on online). We ordered two platters (chicken satay and shishook) and falafel. The falafel was BURNT and the satay platter was drenched in hummus and tahini sauce. The satay platter's chicken was bland/dry and had no satay whatsoever on it. I called the store after we left to see if I could get my order fixed and spoke with the same person as we did in store. They were extremely rude and argued about my order and told me that they did it right and was extremely argumentative and dismissive. I used to order from here a lot but I will never go back because I have never received such terrible treatment while ordering food/ trying to fix an order. Tucked away in an alley downtown it's not particularly visible if you're not looking for it but for someone just walking by as I was it's not a bad spot to stop. The place didn't seem to have ac so it was pretty warm inside but they were quick and friendly with service. The food was surprisingly good. I had the Arabic style shawarma and if you know what to request in it it's really good. The chicken seems of good quality and the bread is a thin tortilla so not overbearing the inside of the sandwich. Get the chicken shawarma Arabic style with garlic mayo, cabbage, pickles, and onions - nothing else. You won't be disappointed. Get a side of some sauces as well. I'd recommend the lemon tahini and tsaziki. They cut it up and top it with tons of seasoned fries, and the fries are really good. Very filling for 12 bucks. read more

The only place downtown to get an authentic falafel sandwich. Their 3C salad/topping can make anything you order taste amazing. I'd give another star if the portions and quality were consistent. It all depends on who is working for the quality and size of your sandwich. Obviously, with 4 stars, it's good food, but inconsistent - sometimes it's huge and they will give me extra toppings that I ask for, other times it's not as big and skimpy with some toppings. We eat a lot of mediterranean food. Most of it's good. Sometimes it's very good and sometimes mediocre. But this place... this place is THE WORST. Wow. Where to begin? We stayed the night in State College on our way back to Connecticut and ordered some take out to the hotel. Just from looking at it, I knew it wasn't going to be very good. Both the tahini and the hummus had been thinned out and were quite watery (ostensibly to make them go further?). The fattoush was just chopped romaine, tomato and cucumber topped with *soggy* pita and some mystery-mayo dressing. The falafel was so-so. Not warmed all the way through. These things are minuses in my book, but not the worst. The ATROCITIES of the meal were the baba, the grape leaves and the tabbouleh. I'm not being facetious when I say the baba tasted like a cow patty smells. It was horrible. Like a dirty barnyard in your mouth. The worst. And gobs of liquid smoke, which still didn't cover the cow patty flavor. I'm not exaggerating. The grape leaves tasted like whatever can they came out of. Old, falling apart, with a bland flavor and metallic aftertaste. They even retained the crammed-in shape of canned grape leaves. Not good. The tabbouleh was a wreck. Parsley was barely chopped and some pieces were mushy. Clearly not fresh. Dressed in some cheap salad oil, not olive oil, and canned lemon juice, not fresh lemon juice. And the container that held the grape leaves and tabbouleh was filled with some brown liquid that smelled bad. Just awful! It's a real disservice for people trying middle eastern food for the first time, because this is shit is inedible. Even drunk college kids deserve better than this. We choked down the falafel, hummus and the green salad (because that is NOT fattoush). The rest went in the trash. Where it belongs. read more

After visiting Pita Cabana for the second time, I feel pretty comfortable reviewing it. I hesitated visiting this place for a long time, even though I live downtown State College, and tend to eat down here often. Something about the look or setup just wasn't appealing to me. What a mistake though... This place has some of the best food I've eaten in town, and that's coming from someone who went through an undergraduate program here, and is now in grad school. I wish I would have visited this place earlier. The food is fresh, well made, and homemade. It also might be the cheapest meal you can find in town... Both times that I've visited, I've gotten the half-chicken, and it's some of the best chicken I've ever had anywhere. Seasoned rice with fresh organic salad, on top of which they put a deep fried half young whole chicken (which is marinated and baked beforehand.) The food is so fresh, all homemade, with great flavor that isn't too intense. The half chicken plate is less than $10. I split it with a friend and it fed us both. This is quite a meal, and really filling food. I thought this place would be really exotic, which is what turned me off about it. Nothing could be further from the truth. This place is just right. My friend also got the salad with lamb chop meat. The meat was braised, and they put the salad together right there from whatever you want on it. They have things like their own hummus, pickled cabbage, baba ghanoush... All are homemade and exceptional. How silly was I for never checking it out before. I plan on going again and trying the many other things they have, but I'm really going to have trouble not ordering the half-chicken again. 5 stars for this place, and I'd easily give them more if I could. read more

Didn't have the best experience here- my mom looked at the online ordering menu ahead of time and tried ordering something, the person up front said the online menu and in person menu were different and they don't have that. She asked what they do when someone orders it online and they didn't answer, she also asked what was comparable and they just shrugged. I got a falafel wrap and my husband got a lamb wrap. They scooped the lamb right over my open wrap and spilled lamb and meat juices into it, which grossed me out since I'm a vegetarian but the interaction had been so awkward already that I didn't say anything. My mom got the half chicken and rice, the chicken was super dry she only got about two bites worth off the whole half chicken. Came here for a quick lunch downtown and it was good. It's like a Mediterranean chipotle since you can pick your toppings as you go. I ordered the chicken pita, but next time I would get the lamb gyro. To me, the chicken was a bit dry. Tried my friends lamb and it was considerably more tender and flavorful. They are advertising outside for a $3 falafel sandwich, and I as a college student decided to give it a try with limited funds, at only $3 I decided to also get their baklava. Upon going in and ordering the falafel sandwich, I was charged $8. I mentioned that the sign out front had it priced at $3 and was told that was the falafel taco, despite the sign saying sandwich. My dad and I came here after dropping a vehicle off to get serviced. The main reason for coming here is because the online reviews said it was zabiah/halal. He only eats halal meat(s) or seafood so this place being halal was a HUGE plus. I got a custom made lamb pita and can say it was probably one of the best wraps I've ever had! First off the size of it was huge, especially for lunch so I was happy with that. Also since it's customizable I was able to add the things I liked the most while avoiding things I didn't find palatable. Place isn't huge but had seating for about 40 people and a few tables outside. Couldn't spot any messes or stains on the tables.
