Back in my delivery days, I was always impressed with the freshness and variety of ingredients, toppings & dressings. The service also was always super-friendly and speedy. Today was the first time I finally got to try their salad myself: got my "Own It" bowl for lunch, and it was just about as good as I'd expected. Everything was fresh (no slimy lettuce or brown avocado or other icky stuff), the portion is *ginormous*, i.e. could easily feed two adults for lunch, and the dressing tasty. My only criticisms would be that the 'roasted corn' was decidedly not - just your regular ole corn, and the kale needs to be treated to a spa day or at least a massage. It was like chewing lawn trimmings. However, those are two minor issues that won't prevent me from getting another salad in the future (minus the lawn trimmings, perhaps), as there are several other combos & dressings waiting to be tasted. Fiddlehead offers salads and grain bowls. It's in a great location on College Ave. near the State Theatre and Snap Pizza. The salads are huge and if you finish one you're stuffed. I typically opt for the "Backyard BBQ" chicken salad and it's delicous. They have several other pre determined options or you can build your own. They also allow substitutions of their ingredients. I've never tried the grain bowls here as I believe that's a fairly new addition to their menu. The restaurant is small with some outside seating but ambiance is limited -- more of an eat and go kind of spot. Pricing is comparable to Mezeh, Roots, Playa bowls and other similar "healthy" options. Most menu items range from $12-14/each. read more

Walking around State College looking for an alternative to burgers and brews, we stopped at this salad shop. Not a big shop, but has decent indoor seating (plus seating outside), with a modern but not uninviting interior. You have a choice of salad mixes or create your own, bottled drinks, and so far this is pretty typical of a place like this. What impressed me was how efficient the salad production was and how friendly the help was considering they were busy. My Backyard BBQ chicken salad had plenty of chicken and cheese and other items with a just right dressing. This was not only a good value for the sizes of the salad, but it was really good and overall very satisfying. They say good things in small packages, so I strongly recommend you give them a try while you are in town. read more

Over the years my roommates and I have probably spent hundreds of dollars at this place we love it so much. I honestly think they're the best salads in State College. Much better than Panera! Definitely more expensive, about $12-14 for a salad but they're HUGE! most of the time I can get 2 meals out of it. I always order the Kale Caesar and then customize it to what I like. Decided against the soup since the 2 listed were not that interesting to me. Fantastic service, the girl who made my salad was super nice and HEAPED so many toppings onto my Kale Caesar, which btw, was super delicious minus the fact that the kale was not super fresh, and included the stems which were blackened and kind of gross. Lets talk rabbit food. Sike, I actually love a good salad. I was in State College for the day and needed something somewhat healthy before heading to the creamery to ruin everything healthy I ate. We walked in and stared at the menu boards. It wasn't too busy at dinner time on a Thursday. Both my mom and I decided on the "Bob Cobb". Romaine lettuce, hardboiled egg, bacon, cherry tomatoes, chicken, red onion. It was suppose to come with a blue cheese dressing, but i opted for BBQ ranch. My mom also switched the dressing to balsamic parm. We were both happy with our dressing switches. Now, can i just say... these salads are huge! It seriously takes me a lot to get full, especially on a salad. Wow. They also have some serious weight to them. I liked the shape of the bowl/container they come in. Toppings do tend to float to the bottom of the container but you just gotta stir it up every once in a while. The girl who made my salad failed to ask me if I wanted Salt and Pepper, after i saw it go on my mothers salad. I really wish she would have asked me, because that really would have made the salad. Overall, the salads were very tasty and when in State College i'd eat here again. However, i was less than impressed with the employees. Obviously they are college students, so i get that. Butttt, it is super annoying to try to get a workers attention when they are hiding in the back room. If they were out front, they were glued to their phones. I understand, but as a customer it is annoying to see. Also, while we were eating we could hear the employees screaming about how they wished they closed at 7pm.. yada yada why can't they just close th doors next now..yada yada... they don't even wanna be here...yada yada. it just kinda made the experience a downer. This is one of my go-to lunch spots in State College. The greens are always fresh and the other fixings (dressing, croutons, Parmesan crisps, etc.) are all tasty. Portions are large, usually enough for 1.5 to 2 meals. My complaints are that the kale is a bit tough (could use a massage and stem removal) and I've sometimes been overwhelmed by the high ratio of dressing/croutons to greens. Sure, it's a $10 salad, but I feel that you actually get your money's worth thanks to their generosity, both in lettuce and in toppings. Every time I go to this restaurant, I find it full. They have really good prices and great deal of variety. They offer three main meals: wraps, salads and soups. Perhaps they have other offerings but, mostly, this is what I order and seen ordered. Salads: you can choose from a list of types; caesar salad, spinach salad, and other bunch pf options. They limit the ingredients but it is a fixed price, which is not really a "but." You can order, however, a customized salad, but the prices will vary according to the number of ingredients you add to it. My Favorite thing is that the options are plenty in both protein and veggies. The wraps are under the same system of the salads, it is just that at the end, they will put it in a tortilla and wrap it. The soups: they have a couple of choices per day, and day vary too. If this place wasn't so pricey, it would be my go-to lunch spot in State College. The dressing on the Oh So Salmon was perfection on a salad; however, the salmon itself was a little dry. All the ingredients are fresh and clean, so you can really trust what you're putting in your mouth. Although the price is high, the portion is basically two salads. It is worth it, but I don't have $12-17 to shell out everyday, so for now, this will be on days I want to treat myself. Like most things related to the Irving's family of restaurants, this is overpriced and inconsistent. Sometimes you walk in and get a really great salad that is actually worth the money, with helpful/generous servers. Sometimes you get the total opposite, with an underwhelming salad that is absolutely not worth what you paid for it, and completely apathetic people behind the counter. I've been going here on and off over the past three years, and while I do think Fiddlehead has the capability of being a delicious, filling meal, there are plenty of other more consistent, less expensive options in downtown SC. read more

The menu consists of about 5 signature salads or you can select a build your own and choose from the multitude ingredients to make your dream salad. This evening we selected from the signature salads, ordering the Latin Flavored (I can't remember the exact name) and the Gaucho salad. The first consisted of mixed greens, black beans, tortilla strips avocado, and others items then topped with a chipotle -lime dressing. The gaucho had seared strip steak, caramel onions, croutons, etc. Both salads were very tasty and were enough to make two meals out of for each of us! I am a regular at Fiddlehead and their salad menu is amazing. I love going there but the portion differs significantly based on who is making your salad. Today I got a salad and the salad bowl was 3/4th filled. Not worth $13! I would recommend the management to train their staff so that they make salad that fills the bowl. I absolutely love what Fiddlehead is doing for the community by offering fresh and delicious foods! There are healthy options for all diets and lifestyles. The tomato basil soup was absolutely wonderful! You could taste the fresh ingredients and no flavor dominated another. It's nice to have some great homemade style soup (that I didn't have to cook haha) I would recommend Fiddlehead to anyone who is concerned about weight loss, maintaining weight or just looking for a fresh and delicious salad/soup etc. The owner and workers were very friendly and helpful when I asked about the ingredients in the soup to make sure it was vegan! Well, for foodies striving to find this "impossible triangle" I have good news: Fiddlehead comes pretty close. Fiddlehead has a range of fresh ingredients for you to enjoy through either one of their standard menu salads or a "build your own" concoction (which includes greens, 4 toppings, and a dressing). I decided to build my own, going with spinach, hard-boiled eggs, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes, and sun-dried tomato dressing. The combination of sun-dried tomatoes and the very thick sun-dried tomato dressing (which the worker added some oil to so as to make it just a little runnier) was excellent--I highly recommend it. I was surprised how huge it was, too! They definitely don't skimp on any of the ingredients, making for a massive salad that barely fits in the large serving-bowl-sized dishes.
