    Philly cheesesteak soup
    Steve A.

Piston Diner has been where it is for ages. You can see from some of the old reviews that this place used to be a rather leaky piston (engine analogy). New ownership, from what I can tell, has remade it greatly. We were a party of ten, called ahead and were instantly told "yes, this is fine". When we got there, the tables were all set up in the side room for us. Excellent service. A couple of the meals arrived a little late, they ran out of Pepsi partway through, and they were out of their signature soup, but these were not unusual problems overall. Drinks were refilled quite well, good service. The main room includes the dessert tower and the salad bar, no foods on display in our little room, but the place feels surprisingly more like a diner inside than I thought from the outside. Speaking of food... I would say "typical diner". There are some excellent offerings on the menu, but when they come out, you realize the ingredients and preparation are fairly plain. The Philly cheesesteak soup was interesting and I'm glad several of us tried that. The salad bar seems quite small, but you may load your plate with what they have there and I feel like I did fairly well with the limited selection. I was rather jealous of the seafood alfredo, and as I dug into the special Louisiana cajun pasta, I was struck by a few things: * The raw peppers are kinda jarring. Should have been cooked (and probably red, not green, for flavor). * The sauce has not a hint of Cajun in it. Nice and creamy, like an alfredo, but no spice. * The chicken was fairly plain without the sauce. But there was enough sauce. And just about everyone either finished their food or brought home what they couldn't finish. And they honored my coupon. So in the end, all the positives of this place bump it up in my opinion. It's not gourmet, but if you want to visit a Jersey diner or, as a regular, go for some diner food, Piston's worthy.

Piston Diner - Westville - You won't hear "No soup for you!" In this local diner! You will hear "soup flights!". Every soup homemade with passion and flavor! Their potatoe leek is award winning, creamy and delicious. The Pennsylvania Dutch soup was just as good. The fav among our group was the chicken pasta. So many selections! We also hit up some of the comfort food this warm and welcoming diner offers. Tuna melt, chicken wrap, and a carved turkey melt all hot the spot. Every meal comes with a cup of soup so you can taste at least one! Or get the flights they offer to taste them all. Awesome staff and service. #soup #homemade #diner #soupflight #hashtagstevej #foodie #supportlocal #comfortfood

I have been meaning to provide a post-Covid review of everyone at my church's go-to-diner and today as I shared breakfast with a group of 20 people, I realized today was the day! First the good stuff ... the people who own, manage and work at The Piston Diner all seem to care about everyone who eats here. Friendliness and a desire to "know your story" has been a mark reflective of this diner since it opened. When you take a glance around the walls of this diner you will see accolades from a wide variety of community organizations, and I know that the diner regularly gives back to the church I am part of as well as to other faith-based organizations. The food is TOP NOTCH diner food! There is a classic diner's menu that seems to have everything but the kitchen sink on it and who knows maybe one of their vast options of omelets just might be called that. There breakfasts are great, but the sandwiches will cover two meals in one unless you have a really huge appetite! Freshly made soup is always on the menu and I love soup, so I regularly enjoy many of their offerings. When you watch the interactions with customers it is clear that many are repeat customers ordering up their favorite Piston choices! Now, the bad is just a reality of the times we live in. You might have to wait a little bit longer than you did in 2018 or 2019 to be taken care of. There are signs looking for wait staff, but it seems all restaurants are in the same predicament. Today, we came as a group of 20 (We did make reservations ahead of time.); we were seated right away but understandably the service was a bit slow, but our group understands the times we are in ... however, if you are an inpatient individual who demands immediate service perhaps the comfy feeling of The Piston might not be for you. I just smile when I hear people say 'they are going to the Piston' because I know they will leave happy!

Supposed to be a Greek salad, this is no Greek salad I've ever seen, waste of money.

The vibes are "cozy, coffee snob but they're cool about." We decide to go with an Americano for me, a cappuccino for the misses, two breakfast sandwiches and a peanut butter chocolate muffin for The Little One. Meh. My Americano tasted like TEA. Like straight up Earl Gray. I let The Misses try before I told her what I ordered, and she said, "why did you order TEA?" By that point, it was busy and I didn't feel like making a fuss about it, but if you dilute my DOUBLE espresso so much it tastes like tea, or you just straight up gave me the wrong drink, we are off to a bad start. The misses Cappuccino cup was half full, and half of that half was foam. And the part that wasn't foam wasn't even good. I'm sensing that you just shouldn't get anything involving espresso from the ol Brown Dog Cafe. The breakfast sandwiches were also.....meh. They worked, but absolutely nothing you couldn't get microwaved from Starbucks or Dunkin. Now the muffin was an absolute winner. I'll give Mimi her credit here. Maybe they should turn into a bakery and forego the coffee stuff. ANYwho...I don't see a reason to go back. Our table was dirty where we sat, and we actually just cleaned it ourselves with wipes before sitting down. We cleaned it ourselves after for whomever would come in after us, since it was clear the staff weren't going to do it. It's a cozy place to settle in and eat a muffin and maybe a regular coffee, but I certainly wouldn't be ordering another Americano from them anytime soon.

This wasn't my first time at Sabrina's, so I already knew the service would probably be a little different with the Mother's Day rush -- and understandably so. Overall, the food was still good! We started with their Blueberry Lavender Lemonade, made with blueberry and lavender, then garnished with fresh blueberries and lemon. It was so refreshing and honestly one of my favorite parts of the meal. For our entrées, I ordered the Shrimp & Grits and added salmon, while my daughter got the Teriyaki Salmon Bowl. For appetizers, we tried one of their "Heated Rivalry" May specials: Shane Hollander's Jambalaya Benedict. It came with shredded potato waffles, two poached eggs, fried shrimp, Creole sauce, smoked beef andouille sausage, pico de gallo, and green onions. Now listen... it looked AMAZING on the menu and had so much potential, but the taste was a little underwhelming for me. The dish came out room temperature, almost like it had been sitting for a while, and I really think it would've hit differently if it had been served hot -- especially the potato waffles. Still, I understand they were extremely busy and trying to accommodate everyone during the holiday rush. Sabrina's is definitely still a local favorite that I'll continue to support. Overall rating for this visit: 8/10

My young son really enjoyed this. The fried buttermilk chicken was so on point that we ordered a second one as a side dish. Likewise the buttermilk chicken sandwich was great. I added bacon which was a good call. I would have liked the bacon a bit crispier and I think raw spinach rather than sautéd spinach would have helped the chicken stay crispier. We also order pancakes. The pancakes were super big. I'm talking dinner plate big. Unfortunately the taste did not live up to the big size. The texture was off putting and the flavor was strange. As for ambiance, it can get a bit loud since it is essentially and empty room with only a little decoration. They do have a small outside eating area which was quieter and could be quite nice on a day with comfy temperatures. All in all it was a good experience and we would go back again.

The food never disappoints, though sometimes the multigrain toast can be a bit tough. On Saturday we had Divorced Eggs and I'm still thinking about it. The over easy eggs were perfect and the crunchy tortilla underneath was the perfect size. First, the place is very nice on the inside; spacious, clean, relatively quiet. The servers were nice, (a little awkward, but nice...), and the food was delicious. I decided to go with the chicharrones mofongo, and the Misses got the salmon. We got a side of fried plantains to split. I was a little worried watching other peoples mofongos coming out, because although beautifully plated, the helping looked small. But, it was more than enough food. The plantains were more than a little over, (aka burnt,) but they tasted ok nevertheless. The Misses enjoyed her salmon, but was QUITE upset that the meal came with white rice instead of yellow. She says that she specifically asked for yellow, but I can't remember, AND, as is the custom now a days, the waitress didn't write the order down, instead trying to remember everything. Hate that practice, I really do. The MEALS were reasonably priced, but the sides and drinks were astronomical. The side of plaintains was TEN dollars. I ordered a coffee at the end of the meal, (that took FOR.EVER. to come out by the way,) and it was like an espresso sized cup of coffee that costed almost $5. The iced teas, over $4. They make up the difference of the meals on the other shit. Our bill for the mofongo, the salmon, an iced tea, a side of plantains, and the worlds slowest, smallest coffee was JUST under $100. It was good, but it wasn't THAT good. As I mentioned, the server was awkward, and would come by the table and then just stand there, or walk away and then walk IMMEDIATELY back, so it was just a little weird. YMMV. Again, even with all that, I would absolutely go back here. They have a LOT of mofongo options, and I'd love to try another protein.
