I have never written a bad review, ever, but I have to here. My wife and I and young daughter ate here. Eggplant Parmesan appetizer barely larger than a deck of cards - $14. My daughter's spaghetti and meatballs from the KIDS menu - $12. I had fettucini Alfredo. I honestly thought the waiter either dropped most of it or it was a leftover from another table - serving was tiny - $18. l added sausage, and if I stacked the quarter-sized sausage slices on top of each other it would have been less than an inch tall - i.e. literally one bite size - $5.50 additional. We ordered garlic bread at the last moment because the servings were so small. Most Italian restaurants bring bread out for free. Not Pistarro's - add'l $7. I had a domestic beer, my wife had a Coke. Bill total - shocking $88.16 before tip. I left 25% for a tip as the waiter did a good job - although I'm convinced he ate half our food back in the kitchen. We used to go to Pistarro's all the time, pre- and post-pandemic, but after a long hiatus, I remembered why we stopped coming here... It wasn't because of the food, which is still very good. But it was because of the service. Not telling us how long the wait would be, taking forever to have the waiter come take our drink order, then our food order, then to check on us, then to bring the check, then to come back with the receipt for me to sign (and then informing me he had accidentally swiped my card for a different table; voided, but still). This is not a problem i have been having at other restaurants, even ones that are busy on a Saturday night. I don't know how much of this can be attributed to not having enough servers, but given the size of the tips that one can make at a place like Pistarro's, if they still have a staffing problem, there's something else going on. I hope that this is something that they can get fixed, but it'll be a long while before we go back to find out. read more

This was a wonderful find in Frederick for delicious, comforting Italian food. 4.5 stars for the food, 5 for the ambiance, and 5+ stars for service! Our server Wesley was an absolute gem -- friendly, helpful, and attentive without being overbearing. We really appreciated him and he made us feel so welcomed on our first visit! They have ample and very cute outdoor seating which we appreciated since we had our pup with us. The standouts food wise would be the penne alla vodka (with and without chicken) and the fungi pizza. That vodka sauce Is good enough to lick off the plate and the fungi pizza had a great charred crust and was actually filled with mushrooms rather than the skimpy scattering you see some places. The crust on the pizza is excellent; we were dipping it in the olive oil and balsamic they gave us for the napoletana bread. The trofie pesto pasta was very good but just a bit dry -- could use some more sauce to make the flavors pop. I forget what it was called but the gin, basil, and cucumber drink was a group favorite -- very light and refreshing which was so nice on such a hot day. Cannoli was good but not stellar, a solid 4. We would 100% come back for more penne alla vodka and I have my eye on some more pizzas from the menu! read more

Amazing Gluten-free pizza!! Several people had told me to come here for the GF pizza and now I understand why. It was so good! The crust is thin and crunchy, which I prefer. My parents got regular pizzas and they also loved it, especially the crust. All of the toppings (arugula, cheese, sausages, onions) were went very well together. I also ordered a watermelon "sugar" drink which was very refreshing on a hot summer day. We sat outside in the front patio. During the summer I would recommend sitting in the front or back patio or inside. The tented area to the side was a bit stuffy for summer since you don't get much of a breeze so we ended up moving. The bathrooms were very clean and spacious which is always nice. I will definitely be back for some more GF pizza. read more

My family held a day-after-the-wedding Sunday breakfast at Pistarro's in early July. I investigated several downtown restaurants for this event, so glad I chose Pistarro's! The service and food were tops. All our guests praised the hot breakfast buffet, fruit and pastry table, and coffee bar with other drinks . The food choices were very similar to the Sunday buffet breakfast available in the restaurant dining area - but we were in The Amalfi Room, just family and friends. Attentive and cheerful servers did a great job for us. There are seven tables in that room, each for 6 or 8 people, set with tableware, napkins, water glasses when we arrived at 11. We added some simple centerpieces but the tables looked festive even before that. Thanks to Event Coordinator Donna, Chef and staff at Pistarro's for a happy party! After years upon years of passing this place and saying the usual 'we must try it someday' we finally decided what the heck let's really go this time! Warmly greeted at the door, and immediately brought back to a table. Our server appeared as if by magic to take any questions we had. Taylor was her name, she recognized me, I recognized her. She is a client of mine. The food came quickly, but you can tell that it was freshly made. And not stuck upon a heat lamp like other places. Somewhat on the expensive side for the price. But it was good and hit the spot. I have the truffle pasta, the wife... I can't remember... dang old age... The desert was Affogato. And here you could detect ice crystals in the ice cream. But the espresso part was wonderful. I wouldn't hesitate to get a double shot here any day. The place feels kinda divey, just like the other two restaurants owned by Fountain Rock. I met up with a friend at this restaurant and we got carryout to eat in my car since it was rainy and outdoor dining was not an option. They did not include utensils (so if you're doing carry out, make sure you ask for some), but luckily I had a few utensils from a previous carryout I did. *TROFI AL PESTO* I have not had pesto in a long time so I was super excited to try this dish. I loved the shapes of the pasta and it made it fun to eat. The pasta dish was a little plain to me, I wished there were more sauce to enhance the flavor. The sun dried tomatoes and pine nuts did add more flavor, but you had to have a perfect mouthful of all three to have a burst of flavor. This was difficult to do because of the ratio given. Hopefully more sauce will be provided in the future. I can't comment on the service since my friend picked up our order, but she didn't rant about anything to me, so I'm sure it was fine. All of our dishes were correct, so that's a plus! Not sure I would come again since I do not visit Frederick frequently and was not that impressed by the dish I got. read more

Best pizza in Frederick in my opinion. I've made it a goal to support local businesses during the recent Covid-19 pandemic. I know these fellow Fredericktonians- yes that's a thing....have bills to pay and families to take care of just as I do. My most recent visit to Pistarro's was just as good as others. This was my first takeout experience. The $18 2 entree, salad, 2 cookies, 2 soda deal was too hard to pass up on a Friday night after working all week. The pizza is handmade with homemade ingredients. You can almost taste the love and pride baked into the crust. It was my first time having cookies from Pistarro's and they were the perfect crunchy rim with a soft center. Pistarro's is certainly the place for Pizza in Frederick. read more

I had high hopes based on some of the reviews and the delicious sounding menu, but maybe we caught them on an off night? First, the good - the space is adorable, the staff was incredibly kind and welcoming, the menu had lots of options, and my cocktail was delicious. Also, our appetizer of eggplant fries was really tasty. Where it went downhill - I ordered the mussels special, which was cooked in a white wine sauce. However, what they meant to say was cooked in an entire BOTTLE of white wine. I actually got tipsy from this entree - it was so damn strong. It burned, and not in a good way. The kids all ordered basic small pepperoni pizzas...that took about 30 minutes to come out. We were nearly done with our adult entrees before the kids pizzas came out, and they were soggy. They're kids, they didn't care, but I was annoyed. All in all, it was nice to try something new, but I don't think we'll be back. read more

Props for a very authentic menu; not your typical chicken parmigiana and baked ziti rendition of Italian cuisine, but, for me way too much emphasis on pizza. Worth noting I've never found a place that does a true lasagna with lots of layers and bolognese and béchamel as opposed to the typical red sauce beef and mozzarella that is so typical, and that was a real treat! That being said my total dining experience was good, nothing disappointed, yet nothing really sang either; sort of Pizzaria ambiance and upscale restaurant prices. Not only were the pies sloppy and not great looking, the flavor was only so-so. Not great; especially considering the price point. Our service was only mediocre also. Very nice people here, we brought our dog and were seated outside next to the park. Sunny but the server put out the umbrella for shade. My wife got the white pizza, and I got the personal peperino pizza, and man was it good. You can tell the dough is fresh. I'm not a big crust guy but I ate the whole pizza. Portion is good. The sauce was also tasty. I would say it was balanced but for me I would add extra cheese, but this is just a small complaint. I am curious to try the other items on the menu. Stopped by for dinner prior to a movie on Sunday night. Dining room was not very busy, so we were seated immediately. We waited for about 20 minutes prior to leaving. In that time no employee greeted us or even made eye contact. We were seated in the main bar area right in front of the window, so it's not like our table was hidden in the back. First, the good: the regular entree portions are huge so it's a good value. The baby artichoke appetizer was great but the portion could have been larger (it's only 2 pieces). I didn't order pizza but the pizza ovens looked legit. The bad: service here is lacking, to say the least. Compared to other reviewers I guess I'm lucky in that it was mainly inattentive instead of rude. The place wasn't busy when I went, lots of open tables. Despite this, we were shown to the 2nd to last table in the back, right next to the kitchen. Lopsided and having the distinction of being the only one without fresh flowers on it, I had to wonder if it was purposeful to give us their worst table? It took a while for anyone to acknowledge us, but when our server did come over he was friendly and kept on top of our drink refills. That's it, that was the service. This place....first off, for a place as popular and full as it was when me and my party of 9 went, the service was AWFUL. Our server was an absolute mess! First he took our order for appetizers instead of asking for our drinks. Normally this wouldn't be a problem at all but this is only the tip of the iceberg. We ordered calamari which came out before our waiter asked for our drinks still, and was the most bland,unsalted,and dry calamari I have EVER seen OR consumed. Came here on a busy Friday night. We had a small group so we called ahead and were told to come on in. When we got there we were told it would be a 45 minute wait. They ended up seating us at the bar which did have a cool view of the pizza making and brick oven but the compromise was that it made it a little difficult to socialize with the people I came with. The crust is really the best part of the pizza and it is fluffy and warm. Also tried the eggplant parm. It looked like a lasagna when it first came out--the sauce was really the all-star here packed with flavor. Also got a cannoli to go which was a nice treat afterwards. Something else to think about: I would use caution especially if you're unvaccinated--I did not look up what their safety precautions were so I am unsure what their policies are but none of the staff were wearing masks. read more

I ordered the signature sandwich (Pistarros sub). For $17 I got lettuce, tomato, a few dots of dressing and 3 laser thin scraps of cold cuts) on a sub roll. When I say scraps, I am not exaggerating, literally a fraction of an ounce. The fries that came with it were OK. The best Napoletan pizza in the area, coming from someone who loves Naples and its food. We drive the 30 minutes for Pistarrro's when the "best" Napoletan pizza in the area (per the Post etc.) is walking distance from our house. How's that for a review?
