This IS as good as it gets. Visiting Bismarck and found Pirogue on Yelp (and it was our anniversary). Outstanding service and an exceptional dinner. Started with the Potstickers and were the best we ever had. I went with Reggiano-Parmigiano encrusted Walleye and it was very good. Pam had the Grilled filet of beef with pancetta, shallot & herb butter. Absolutely to die for; prepared perfectly and melted in your mouth. The pancetta, shallot & herb butter was an excellent addition to the steak. Vegetables cooked perfectly ... crisp and flavorful. If you are in Bismarck and looking for a higher end restaurant, this is the place. I'd go back in an instant. read more

I was amazed by the best Mahi Mahi ever! I've had o ran side and Chef Trevor had me speechless. They paired it with a great Chardonnay ! Husband had Sirloun and shrimp that was amazing along with a great tap! Must go there! It's close for us and we need to go more! read more

I had the lamb loin and must say ended up a bit disappointed with the portion and how dry it came out. My coworker had the scallops and they were delicious. A must have while here, the Rhubarb Martini. We were a large group but nonetheless, service was not compromised. Our waitress was friendly and was on top of the groups needs. read more

Five stars may seem like a lot, Pirogue is indeed the best Bismarck has to offer. The owners are a great team and the wait staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and seem to know just how long to spend at a table. The menu is full of local flavors and though a bit pricey for Bismarck, I don't mind paying for a dining experience, besides it won't break the bank (unless you throw in a bottle or two of wine, then expect the tab to climb rather quickly). The restaurant is ample sized but we usually stick to the small bar in the front of the house. It certainly shouldn't be considered a bar hopping stop, but for two to four people wanting some great appetizers it is wonderful. I recommend the beet salad, but let the plate warm a bit as the goat cheese need to be warm to really enjoy it with the beets. The bison and corn soup is ok, but a bit bland, so go with the soup du jour. The lamb burger is out of this world great and works great with the cheese plate. read more

Pirogue Grille has provided consistent quality and amazing service for me in the years I have been a customer here. Whether I am dining for a business meeting, or out with family, my experiences have always been nothing short of incredible. From the appetizer options to the desserts, everything on the menu is made from scratch, giving Pirogue a huge advantage over anywhere else in town. My boyfriend's birthday deserved a nice dinner out, and neither of us had been to Pirogue before, as it seemed an extravagance for a "regular" date night. Personally, I didn't find the price off-putting at all. We shared two appetizers, had one soup, one salad, two entrees, and two desserts, and the bill was $100. Completely reasonable. When it comes to the menu, think quality, not quantity. Not a billion options like some chain places, but what they do have is well done. Bison, beef steak, shrimp, scallops, fish...and most of it ND-local from what I understand. Neither of us walked out with room for anything else in our bellies, and we were completely satisfied, from the service to the food to the atmosphere. We'll be back, and maybe not wait for the next special occasion either! read more

Started with pheasant dip (not sure if this is accurate name). It was a little sloppy delivery, but good flavor. Had a steak and mashed sweet potatoes. Cooked ok and all was good here, nothing that stood out. Bread sent to the table wasn't very impressive, soup was ok. Dessert was amazing, quality work on the baked Alaska. Highly recommended. This is one of the best restaurants I experienced during my stay in ND for the summer. As I didnt get out much , it was certainly very nice and afforded a very diverse ample menu.. I was not exactly impressed with most of the state and the cuisine , but this and one other restaurant in Bismark made up for the rest of the state. My husband and I had dinner at the bar at Pirogue last night. I had a Caesar salad and ordered the salmon with the miso citrus vinaigrette which I had not tried before. The salad was one of the best Caesar salads I've had in Bismarck. All the components were just as they should be and the dressing was balanced. I like that Pirogue serves two sides along with the entrees - a vegetable and a choice of starch. I hesitated on a starch and the waitress offered me a double serving of vegetables which I gladly accepted. The vegetables which were fresh and tasty - much better than the typical restaurant flavorless mixed frozen vegetables. The highlight of my dinner was the salmon. The light sauce was the ideal accent to the perfectly cooked salmon without overpowering it or being too sweet. This was a delightful surprise. I do not typically order salmon; it's not my favorite fish. The salmon at Pirogue makes me look forward to ordering it again with their special miso citrus vinaigrette. Best dinner out in a long time. My husband also loved his beet salad and walleye entree. He was a "Clean Plate Guy". read more

Absolutely the best restaurant in Bismarck, maybe even all of North Dakota. The menu isn't large, but you will find a range of options (including fish, lamb, bison, beef, seafood, and chicken), most of which is locally grown/raised. The portions are not oversized, but the food is always the highest quality. I always find something that I've never had before, and many of the dishes will not be found anywhere else in town. The price is a bit higher than some of the other up-scale places (like the Bistro), but not by a lot, and it's completely worth it. A couple can easily spend $150 with drinks, appetizers, and dessert (which isn't all that unreasonable), but most of the entrees are in the $25-30 range. (I highly recommend getting the dessert platter, featuring 5-6 half portion desserts. They are all delicious, but it's too hard to choose just one.) The service is by the far the best I've ever had anywhere, any time. The servers are attentive, knowledgeable, friendly, and well dressed. You will definitely feel welcomed and wanted here! read more

Loved trying all of the local flavors and meats here. My boyfriend and I split 3 appetizers, salad and an entree. With a bottle of wine, we had a very yummy night out. We tried the walleye trio (smoked, fish cake, and wrapped in prosciutto), smoked venison sausage, and the rabbit spaetzel for appetizers. Our favorite by far was the VENISON - it was bursting with flavor, and you could really taste the smokiness. The walleye was also really flavorful, and we liked trying the different preparations. The rabbit dish was a little too oily for our liking - we could have passed on that one. We split the bison for an entree, which was also solid -- although we still liked the venison app more. We drank a bottle of the Educated Guess cab - which paired excellently with our food and went down easily, very smooth. Great service the whole evening. Our table also came with crayons, which I enjoyed using even though I'm not a small child. For a fancier dinner out on the town - would definitely come back. read more

Ah, the power of Yelp. We chose this place because a fellow Yelper recommended it, and we were not disappointed. Our party split a few dishes, and tried the prixe fixe 3 course special, celebrating their 3rd or 4th year in business. Not to be missed are the Scillian fried rice balls; who knew you could that with rice! And it's such a pleasure to have pork tenderloin cooked to your specification: so many establishments just over do it. Also worth mentioning and, I mgiht say worth ordering, are the rhubarb martinis, a tasty malbec, and the chokecherry-chocolate ice cream. Pirogue is somewhat priciey, but well worth it. read more

I'd been wanting to try Pirogue but was forewarned that it's a place you go for special occasions so we went there for my birthday. We were seated on July 30 without a reservation at what I assume was the very last table available. We went with a game meat-themed meal: house made venison sausage, BBQ rabbit on a wild rice potato pancake, a house salad, corn and bison soup and bison medallions as an entree. Our server was very accommodating in splitting our entree onto two plates. The wait staff is also very attentive, well-coordinated. Our water glasses never remained empty; we were brought new silverware after every course. I ordered their raspberry cheesecake for dessert and much like everything else we devoured, the cheesecake also was phenomenal. I can't wait for another "special occasion" to come around to dine here again. read more

I've been here twice. I have to say the food is outstanding for such a small town. I really don't think there is anything that comes close within like a 200 mile radius! If I'm traveling through ND this is going to be my stop. I usually go for the chicken pot stickers, these are amazing. And most recently I had the salmon for my main. Yum, yum. Pirogue is my favorite restaurant in Bismarck. This is the best place to bring out of town visitors- especially those from large cities who are not easily impressed. The food is regional fare, prepared very well. The walleye trio for an appetizer is the best. Better get one for each of you- the portions are small, and you will want more. But at $10..... Perhaps you should save some appetite for entree and dessert. You can come dressed up or casual. There is paper over the white linen table cloths so you can doodle while you visit. You could put this place in any large city, and the line would be out the door. I wish more people could enjoy our little gem. read more

Was at Pirogue last night for my son's birthday. It was our first time. I must say the atmosphere was fantastic! The food however was even better! My wife had the BBQ quail, I had a flat iron steak, one son had rainbow trout while the other had lamb. We all tried each other's and every single dish was delicious! Each dish was accompanied with butternut squash mashed potatoes. The best potato salad I've had EVER! The desserts followed and were as fabulous as the main course! Appetizers I'd recommend are the chicken and peanut pot stickers or the venison, both were scrumptious. The service was top notch! I don't think any of our drinks were out for more then 30 seconds before our waitress snapped them up for a refill. It is a bit pricey but when you finally bite into that food you will understand why. Honestly it's maybe the best restaurant in Bismarck. read more

Being from Vegas, I don't many chances to try interesting types of meat like rabbit and bison so I figured I'd try this place out. Overall it was not a bad place. I had the BBQ wild rabbit and Bison medallions. BBQ wild rabbit was a little gamey but the sauce was great. Bison medallions were not bad. Semi-tender but it was kind of bland. Also, maybe it was packed but it took an awfully long time for the medallions. I'd say I waited a half an hour for the medallions. Overall, great place to try if you don't have rabbit and bison back home, but this was probably a one shot deal for me. read more

My wife and I went here for our anniversary. We had heard many good things about this establishment. We started with the walleye trio as an appetizer. It was a walleye cake (which was OK), smoked walleye with lemon aioli (was good) and prosciutto wrapped walleye which was awful. The fish tasted old and the prosciutto didn't work well with it. I had a cup of their soup of the day. It was a Spanish soup with lentils and tomatoes and was good, in fact one of the best parts of my meal. My wife had the hearts of romaine Caesar salad and I had the bacon, cranberry and blue cheese salad. Both were OK. Her Caesar dressing had a slight fishy taste to it, which we found odd. My wife has the filet which was fairly good and I had the New York steak which was OK. There was far too much sauce on my New York steak and it overpowered the steak. My wife has the creme brûlée which was very good for dessert, I had the chocolate tart for dessert and it was excellent. The prices were fair and the service was friendly and good. Overall, a decent experience but didn't measure up to what we had heard. read more
