Not great. The sampler was super greasy, clearly from frozen, and just a hot mess in a basket. The fleishkuechle was interesting. We heard it was a specialty to North Dakota and tried it. We were not impressed. It almost seemed undercooked... The shining star of the night was the knoephla soup. It was delicious and my husband and I had wished we had only ordered that. Another specialty of North Dakota. You could taste that it was homemade. I would come back only for that, but I don't think I will be coming back. I'm not sure about anything else on the menu is worth having. I could be wrong though. The burgers and breakfast might be better. The service was probably as bad as the sampler though. No friendly greeting and our server never checked on us. Our drinks never got refilled. It was a ghost town in there at this time, so he could've at the very least refilled our drinks. I looked for review for a good breakfast place as we drove through this area and spent the night. Found this place and it lived up to the reviews. It's in a truck stop/ gas station but it was packed with locals and truckers! I ordered the rolling hills omelet with hash browns and sourdough toast! Toast was perfect toasted and buttered. The omelet was huge and I couldn't even finish it. It was loaded with the fillings heavily! They didn't cheap out on the fillings of ham, bacon, sausage, green peppers, onion and mushrooms! The only bad thing was I didn't care for the hashbrowns as I like mine a little golden brown and these were barely cooked or colored. But each to their own liking! My buddy loved it! We stopped here on the way to Montana. This place caught my eye because of the homemade Knoephla soup which is a North Dakota staple! It's like a dumpling cream soup. Phenomenal! I had the ham and cheese omelet and hashbrowns. Is was soooo good! Nice portion, nice and hot, and great flavor! Service is wonderful. Our waitress was so kind. This place is attached to a truck stop buy don't let that stop you please! These small town restaurants are always the best! Plenty of parking since it's attached to a truck stop. Just had a great breakfast here...They have homemade sausage patties that were quite good...No funny textured things in there either if you know what I mean...The rye bread was out of this world...Maybe the best rye bread I've ever had ? It was fresh, thick, chewy, and hearty....Everything was cooked perfectly...Clean and friendly workers....They also sell some to go food that they make in the store section...Next time I'll try the cheesy hashbrowns, or maybe some hashbrown with gravy. read more

It was great to find this old school truck stop diner! Open 24 hours, breakfast any time. Old school waitress who was nothing short of amazing. Usually, you get a tiny mug of coffee and hope that she'll come by once in a while for refills. Here, you get a whole pot of fresh, hot coffee! While I didn't set out to come here I came here just the same. I was eastbound in the 94 towards St Paul when my gut started to raising heck like my throat had been cut. Luckily I looked left just in time to see the sign which included the two most important words, "Truck Parking" so I did. Attached to an independent Flying J Truckstop is the Rolling Hills Restaurant an apparent local favorite and rightfully so. It's a seat yourself kind of afternoon around hear so I did. A sassy young lady, Carol, brought the menu and took my drink order,quickly returned with my Pepsi and asked if I was ready. It became very apparent that she could handle anything I threw at her. I asked her to pronounce the name of the soup that they are famous for and she did. I still can't pronounce the name of the soup but she made sound so good I was about ready to order enough of it to bathe in. Carol brought me a bowl of the Knoephla Soup as I perused the menu. I quickly found another item that I definitely wasn't gonna attempt. I decided not to try that Fleischkuechle sandwich and ordered the Liver and Onions instead. Even a great cook can mess up some liver real quick. I asked that it be medium and it was, I asked for extra onions and there was, I asked for a baked potato with butter and sour cream. I got everything I asked for and even more. I was really excited about my extra onions, yeah I know that's strange. But they were very nicely grilled, the liver cooked to perfection very tender and really well seasoned and the baked potato was done with no hard spots in it. I'm a fatter and happier guy for sure now. Being as I done such a great job of eating everything on my plates Carol determined that I was worthy of some desert I chose the coconut cream pie. I must admit I made a great choice I was rewarded with a good slice and some whipped cream. I'm gonna continue to be a good boy and willingly take a nap in the parking lot! Stopped by on a Sunday morning for breakfast. Place was busy with locals as the Sunday special is a buffet breakfast. We ordered Chicken fried steak and Sausage & Eggs off the menu. Eggs were cooked perfectly but brought barely warm to the table. Wife's sausage patties were tasty, but my chicken fried steak was not; the meat was okay and a generous portion, but the gravy was bland despite having bits of sausage. Hashbrowns were very good, crunchy outside and tender inside. Wife's sourdough tasted like white bread and my wheat toast was a bit burnt. Coffee was okay and an urn was left on the table, so refills weren't a problem. Would probably give them another try, on a weekday, if I was in the area. Lots of food, so if you aren't a "big eater", order a single plate with an extra side of toast and share! read more

My reviews may seem like a broken record, but enough can't be said about my wife and my experience at this restaurant. From our "good morning, how are you" greeting from each and every employee, to the exceptionally large portions for our meal. Probably the best truck stop breakfast food there is. The have their own hand made sausage that is truly outstanding. Service is very fast. I have eaten here several times and every time they were fast. Their hash browns are spot on. I asked if they fresh cut their fries, but they do not, so I have no opinion on their lunch. read more

Listen, (aside from my mother's) there is a Holy Trifecta of Knoephla and it is like this: Frieds--Kroll's--Rolling Hills. Each has its own merits, yes, with Kroll's having the best noodles and Frieds having the best texture, but Rolling Hills has the best flavor. I don't drive 20 minutes out of my way for just any old soup. Actually, I probably would, but you need to believe me when I tell you this soup is great.
