While attending Covington's MainStrasse Oktoberfest over the weekend, we stopped into Piper's Cafe for ice cream. They have a walk up window and feature 24 flavors of soft serve ice cream in addition to hot dogs, burgers, and breakfast served all day. All of their flavors start out as vanilla, flavor extracts are added and mixed in, then the newly flavored ice cream is pressed out into a cone. You can combine up to three flavors, or we found that the $1 kid's cone was a great way to give multiple flavors a try without mixing. Piper's is located near Goebel Park and with so many festivals taking place in the MainStrasse Village I'm sure we will be back for more. read more

I am so glad to have found this spot, every one calling it a little gem is absolutely right. Tucked away on a side street, you'll literally miss it driving right by if you don't know to look. But stop, check it out, and you'll be so happy you did. Food is great, outdoor seating (in appropriate weather) is so very pleasant, and the local, healthy, options abound. What a cute, price reasonable and unique place to eat. Very limited space for seating outside, right across from a park and in a very antique street. The food was soooooo good! Best veggie burger I had ever had! They take pride in the produce used as well as the recyclable utensils. I had the sweet baby watermelon salad ( red/yellow watermelon with chopped mint) with my veggie burger. For dessert, a cone of coconut ice cream mixed with green tea. Great location, nice looking place and the food is delicious, hands down. That said, I did not feel welcome, at all. I asked for menu recommendations and got zero feedback, worker appeared frustrated over such simple question. I took a menu with me, sat down to study it for a few minutes. I then decided, upon taking my order he asked what I'd like to drink, I asked what they had, and again he became irritated. I had to open a menu just to pick a drink. Do they serve alcohol, teas, coffee, special juices, fountain drinks, shakes (?) Je ne sais pas. So rather than picking up the menu again to search for a drink I told him I would make it easy for him and to just give me water. There's a really cool giant ice cream cone in front of the business, I took dozens of pictures from different angles for social media purposes, in other words, to promote THEIR business on FB, Instagram, Twitter, etc. Well that didn't go very well. A snarky remark came quickly about taking too many pictures, I stopped. I was SO craving an ice cream (or froyo) after the meal but decided to bypass, I felt uncomfortable having to engage with this worker again. I had the tower platter for breakfast - meat, eggs, hashbrowns, toast for $8. Price fits the quality of meal. It just wasn't that great but I do cook a mean breakfast myself. Wanted it to be sooo good & think if we could've ate lunch vs breakfast, it may have been better. Unfortunately for us, the timing wasn't great. We were out of town on mini vacation & coronavirus hit - making it difficult to find restaurant with accomodations. This cute, quaint, lil house is in walking distance of Radisson Hotel in downtown Covington. If we were to redo this trip, I would choose Waffle House for breakfast & try Piper's for lunch/dessert. read more

Love this place- My boyfriend and I recently tried it for the first time for ice cream. They have an unbelievable amount of flavors. My boyfriend got strawberry cheesecake and every single bite tasted of both flavors. Not like usual ice creams where you get one flavor. They also have non-dairy options. I am not a big fan of dairy and got a glacier freeze and it was just as delicious!! As crazy as it sounds, I now prefer this over Greaters! They have breakfast/lunch/dinner foods as well. This is my favorite place in Mainstrasse. The staff are beyond amazing and kind, the food is phenomenal (and completely home made) and the ice cream is just incredible. To start, when I moved to the location, I discovered the little ice cream joint and found the number of flavors for ice cream was huge! I decided to try something simple, banana and custard and I fell I love, enough to but a pint of it. Since then I bring every person I know and meet to lunch or to get ice cream there. The staff are always so friendly and kind and every single time I go I get to talk and laugh and joke with the staff. They just radiate kindness! I only recently tried the food, I got a grilled cheese with their fries, and I could eat that every day. The fries are home made, they are much skinnier than regular fries (aka why they are called rat tail fries) but I could sit there and eat them until the sun goes down. The flavors complement each other beautifully. Even the ketchup is made from scratch! They didn't have to flex that hard on us but they did that. Not to mention the prices. Most places with food and ice cream home made like that would charge more but they keep the prices low, which is so amazing. Anyway, TLDR: Piper's is an incredible place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and there's no doubt I'll be back again and again. read more

I have no qualms about giving five stars. Just a small shop in Mainstrasse village selling fast food and soft serve, but you can't go wrong with the prices and the fact that you can combine soft serve flavors. On my first visit, I combined vanilla, blueberry, mango, and cantaloupe soft serve flavors and the hodgepodge of flavors actually worked for me. Cheap better than McDonald's and Burger King fast food and a soft serve? I would totally comeback to Covington for that. This is one of the places in Covington you should stop at! read more

Even though I go to Pipers primarily for soft serve (an abundance of flavor combinations) they have excellent food options too, specifically breakfast... and... GOETTA! It's just a small place with a window you walk up to and order your food, but then they have this fantastic outdoor seating area with plenty of seating. I usually grab a soft serve cone and take a walk around the neighborhood because I love the area. The staff is friendly and efficient. I have never waited long for anything here. I ordered the Hamelin burger and rat tail fries. The hamburger was Delicious!!!! The rat tail fries I won't order again. I loved all the options on how you want you beef cooked. Loved the seasons you can get for the fries. The company I work for ordered take out and everyone could find something to get with a couple dietary preferences. One person got a fruit cup which had a different kinds of fruit than ur normal berries or cock tail. I would recommend this to anyone. Many gluten free options that are delish and they are very careful during food prep if you tell them you have an allergy/are Celiac. One of my favorite places to eat but do Not get their potatoes. My friends and I used to come just for the potatoes you'd get with your breakfast but they switched them to these shredded ones and they always taste really plain and undercooked. 4/5: this review I find is difficult to give the full 4 stars that I gave, this is why: I went for breakfast after reading compelling reviews. I've had soft serve ice-cream here before, but this was a first for actual food. I asked for help on what to order while ordering, and unfortunately the man who's name I wasn't told said, "Everything's good, you just have to decide what to get." Absolutely no help to me. So I went with one of my favorites and a classic: biscuits and gravy with a side of their hash. If my review was on this alone I'd give them only 1 star. The biscuits resembled dense corn bread, like a scone but without any moisture. The gravy, I had with pork sausage was full of onion which is fine in moderation, but I'd have preferred without them. I thought maybe the gravy would soak into the biscuits and the over all taste would be better, not at all. The hash was so peppered it was in my opinion not worth finishing. I had even asked if I needed salt and pepper to which the man said they likely might, because they went light in that area as to leave room for the guest to apply. My dish, not so. Throwing away 3/4 of my dish and being disappointed I got French toast to go... HALLELUJAH! I mean this brought this review from a 1 star to a 4. Imagine if I'd had it right off the skillet!! The French toast is AMAZING! Nothing less than a short stack is enough (3 pieces) topped with maple syrup and powdered sugar! So so so good! Coffee: I wasn't given a choice on the blend if there's is one.. but the one I got was dark. Super dark, and honestly just not my favorite. I'm really glad I chose to grab the French toast to go... otherwise I probably wouldn't be in a hurry to go back. But I did! Now I'm so ready! Maybe I'll just grab coffee before at the Bean Haus right around the corner on Main St. Then breakfast would be a full 5.. There's tons of potential here, with just a few small corrections there would be a huge difference. WORTH THE TRIP! read more

If you're looking for a small time, mom and pop type, soft serve ice cream shop, then look no further. Our tradition of ice cream on the last day of school continued despite the covid-19 pandemic. Service was great, and soft serve was the best I've ever had. Considering I got 4, and paid $14, I'd say it was a steal. Location right down from goodfellas, will make for great future visits. When I spend $30 for two breakfast platters and an oj I expect it to be phenomenal. Definitely not what I got! The pork sausage taste like a poorly seasoned and dry hamburger and the hash browns and eggs were mediocre at best. I could've saved my money and went to the store and cooked my own breakfast for the crap that I got. I'm not sure who's in the kitchen but they need to be retrained and or removed from that position because they're using absolutely no seasoning while they're cooking. I mean this is porkopolis and you guys can't get better seasoned sausage than that cmon. And with this pandemic going on and all these restaurants out here suffering and going out of business and you guys are pushing out gourmet dog food; pitiful at best. Had such a great experience here! Some friends and I came for ice cream over the weekend and our expectations were exceeded. It is so refreshing to be greeted in such a welcoming manner, the owner was great and explained how the place worked, some of their specialties and was patient while we chose which flavor combo to choose. There are 40+ flavors with a million different combo options. They blend the different flavors fully versus a twist appearance. The German chocolate ice cream was amazing. All their flavors are lactose free as an added bonus. We also got the chili cheese fries which were fantastic--tons of cheese options as well. If I could give Piper's ten stars, I would! Everything about this cafe was basically perfect. The fact that 95% of their products are from local resources is what made me want to go here. And on top of that, the food was delicious and the man working was the friendliest! I had seen an advertisement on a car and it just caught my attention. My mom and I came here for breakfast and they had great choices for everyone! And great vegan choices which makes my heart happy. Ice cream is soft serve with tons of different flavor options (which you can mix together to create a unique combination). The man working was able to suggest many good combinations. Husband did a chocolate and tiramisu combination. He liked it but thought maybe a vanilla flavor would better compliment the tiramisu without being to overpowering. I did a brownie and peanut butter combination, which was awesome! We both got the soft serve in waffle cones. For $3.50 or so a piece, it was a good serving for the price. Some pretty tasty soft serve. They have over 40 flavor and you can mix them. Love the variety but the flavored didn't blow me away. I can't believe this place has been right under my nose this whole time! A walk up window with outside seating. Saturdays they have all you can eat pancakes for $7 and breakfast served all day. I got the scrambler which was alright, and tried a little bit of my boyfriends Guinness goetta chili--which was hearty and very very delicious (recommended so long as your not anticipating "cincy style chili")My favorite was the soft serve- over 40 flavors which you can mix (up to three) and glaciers which are soft serve mixed with traditional ice cream. On my most recent trip down to Northern Kentucky, I stopped by here with my friend for lunch. I got the Grilled Cheese with Tomato Basil Cheddar - it was PHENOMENAL. It came with a side of "Rat Tail" fries with a homemade ketchup which is delicious. Everything is fresh and locally sourced, and they have vegan options on the menu. They also have a great selection of drinks - instead of Diet Coke or Sprite, they have Switch Soda, Jones Soda, Arizona Ice Tea, etc. There are picnic tables set up right outside to make for a nice charming little lunch. Next time I head down I definitely want to try the breakfast and then come back later for the ice cream! This is the best little place in Covington for casual dining. We walked over to Main Strauss from downtown just for their blueberry cheesecake ice cream because it sounded so good, and it was worth the walk. Seriously, go try that stuff! The staff were so inviting and chatted with us for a few minutes while we ordered and waited. It gave me a real Andy Griffith vibe which was really nice. The setup itself is different; you walk up to an outside counter, order, and sit down outside. The clerk brings you the food or ice cream you ordered when it's ready. You can see into the place and it's quaint and small but they seemingly have enough kitchen to fulfill the orders. It looked like only three guys were running the place when we went. There are benches and tables in this lovely little sitting area surrounded by trees and rod iron fencing. Honestly, this place is too adorable. I loved being there. It's a pleasant little small town diner with great ice cream, a lovely seating area, super nice people running it, and a great location in Covington. Bring the kids, bring your significant other, bring the parents and grand parents. Everyone should try this place. read more

All of the food is homemade and I cannot recommend enough to try their pumpkin butter. Their pancakes are not like any other pancakes, they are thick, but very light and fluffy. Stopped by their takeout window for one of their 24 FLAVORS OF SOFT SERVE ICE CREAM!!!! Yes, its true. And you can mix and 2 flavors together! For $2.25 you can get a cup. For $2.50 a cake cone. For a little more, you can get a waffle cone. Amazing! I found success with a butter pecan and caramel. Also good was the maple nut and strawberry cheesecake. Not so successful was the strawberry peanut butter or the amaretto. The possibilities seem endless! They do have to individually make each cone because of the personalized flavors. This means you may have to wait about 5 minutes for your cone. Completely worth it in my book. Checked out their food menu, which looks very interesting. Came here for soft serve with my family on a Sunday afternoon. It's a walk up window with lots of outdoor seating available. Their soft serve ice cream is lactose free, and they have over 60 flavors to choose from. Prices are great: just $2.50 for a cup or sugar cone, $3 for a waffle cone, or only $1 for a kids cone (WOW!). I got pistachio soft serve in a sugar cone, and the portion was really big, so I think next time I will get the kids cone. The ice cream was good, but a little icey in my opinion, and I wish the pistachio flavor was a little stronger. But service was excellent and fast. I'll come back to try the other flavors the next time I'm in Covington. read more
