Cozy little restaurant with a warm touch at any time of the day. I had came here before and ordered the philly cheesesteak. This time I ordered the margharitaville pizza. I had no knowledge prior to coming how this pizza was supposed to look so i went off what the menu read. The pizza alone didn't come with anything but red sauce, oregano and cheese. It's insane that i had to pay an extra of $4 for pepperoni on top of the $18 pizza and 20% service charge. Once i received my pizza it left a bitter tase in my mouth... the pizza was so burnt from the bottom it was so hard to taste anything but the burnt crust. I had to call the server over because I felt that paying $30 for a pizza, with 5 little slices, burnt all over just didn't seem right. She had the cooks redo it for me and this time it was a bit better. The tall server wasn't too friendly given her stares of dislike towards me and my partner after we called for her service (service that was paid for before hand... involuntarily). As we left the restaurant we turned to her to say thank you and she completely disregarded our gratitude. The server with the glasses was very kind and even offered to take our dirty plate away. Came here to try a new place. Very hip vibe, a modest selection of foods, nothing I would think of as a particularly "typical" pizza. I was interested in one of the specials but was told it was sold out. Later I saw at least one person order and receive it, so not sure what that was about. Sitting directly under the green frog light made all my food look brown and gross, so I suggest if visuals are important to you, sit somewhere else. The young woman that helped me was SUPER, but the restaurant seemed short-staffed during my visit. This woman was doing the best she could, and had a positive attitude, but was the only one taking orders, delivering food and usually the one cleaning and prepping tables too. There were other people I saw who were not cooking, but weren't helping enough out front. At some point the young lady came by to ask how my food was and I wondered where my dessert was. She said they usually bring that at the end of the meal, but would I like it now? I was close to done eating so I said yes please. Even so, I had to wait at least 10-15 min after I finished eating and my left-overs boxed up for my dessert to arrive. In fact the restaurant was literally closed before my dessert was served to me. All the food was great. I was surprised by my custom-order mushroom & olive pizza because the mushrooms were more "artisan" than I'm used to and the olives were green, which I generally do not like. That said, the flavors were extremely good and the green olives had just enough bite to be a really nice compliment overall, and were not strong or offensive to my taste buds the way greens usually are. Best part was the hearth bread, which I could eat all day. I literally ate the entire loaf, and one slice of pizza just to taste it fresh, then took the rest of the pizza home. Appreciated the option of canned water, but my taste buds were too sensitive and it tasted too metallic for my preference. I would recommend coming here if you can find a time it's not busy. Overall very enjoyable experience. Just needs a little better pacing/staffing. :) read more

I previously reviewed pinyon giving it 5 stars, the food is great. But I feel I must warn about how I believe they scam you with an automatic tip/ service charge of incredible percentage. My son's bill was around $37 and all of a sudden went up a whooping $45. Even at 18% that they self entitled themselves. Is not the amount they charge. Another thing is not a sit down place, you order at the cashier, pay and wait for food, my son got a tea that was never refilled. That lamb bacon was the absolute hit of our pizza party! A real gem of a restaurant in Ojai!!! Truly some of the best pizza I have ever had in my life. We have eaten there on our last two times in town and everything we have tried has been phenomenal. Had the smoky goat cheese pizza today (incredible) and margheritaville (so good, even my picky 4 year old loved it). The dough/crust is especially good. Bought some baked goodies to take home too. Great vibes, super nice employees, loved the yacht rock soundtrack playing. Wish this was our local spot but will look forward to returning on every trip to Ojai! read more

The pretzel was stale and the orange juice came in the smallest cup I have ever seen. It measured about 5 ounces and was woefully indequate. And to make matters worse it was $6. Are you kidding me? I have never seen a cup of orange juice in such a small container. It definitely wasn't worth $6. Here is the icing on the cake - this establishment charges a 30% gratuity on top of the bill that cannot be declined. Went to Pinyon to order and wait for take out. Automatic 20% service fee added to all bills whether you dine in or take out. What? So if I ordered a bottle of wine to go, I'd pay 20% more for it because you handed it to me at the register? The young woman at the register said that if I order online, that only a 10% fee would be added, to which I responded "I tried ordering online. It wasn't available" Response.. "That's because we're running low on pizza dough." Okaaaay.. 20% was added anyway. Food was okay.. nothing special and overpriced overall. I love what they are doing at Pinyon. It's high quality and interesting food at at accessible ambiance and price-point. We went for dinner and the food was exceptional. I highly recommend the cheesesteak on Monday nights. I worked in the restaurant industry through college and their philosophy of caring for their employees through offering full benefits and opportunities is the company is unheard of. I understand people's complaints with the service charge, but for me, it's worth it to support this company trying to do the right thing and take care of their employees.
