So much fun! The first skating rink I took them too was a bust. After coming to Playland they are officially in love with roller skating.

That place is so nice and like if you play like you have some fun and relaxing dance when you're skating over there bye. It's so fun.

Just not for us but kids might really enjoy. Seems like a safe place to take your kids for a little skating fun.

Me and my family have visited this place a few times because we love skating. One thing I've noticed is they allow inexperienced skaters a lot of access to the main floor when they have a section specifically for that type of skater. This can become very dangerous in my opinion as it can lead to serious injures. They yell about sitting and standing on the wall but don't acknowledge the fact that someone can get hurt. Also, the music seemed to be catered to the European culture instead of a healthy mix. Please add some 90s tracks of r&b and pop. Everyone loved that music era you can't go wrong with it. Also, where is the couple skate?? There used to be races, Hokey Pokey, limbo and couples skate!! Please consider these changes. read more

Had a mostly fun deja vu night here on Tuesday for a friend's retro birthday bash. All the other reviews have covered what's awesome about Playland for grownups (home of the Texas Rollergirls; cheaper-than-a-movie $7 entertainment combined with a bit of exercise; flashback to childhood for the Carter/Reagan-era set; exceptional people-watching; no rugrats on adult night; etc). What's not so awesome: no concessions except vending machines (bottled Pepsi - blecch - for $1.75!!) and outside beverages are not allowed. My dreams of reliving my 5th grade soda fountain specialty, the Suicide, were cruelly dashed. No Frito-pie, giant dill pickles, or nachos!? Since it was adult night, we assumed there would be beer, but nooooooo, that's only during roller derby nights. Boo. They *did* at least let us bring in our own cake & have pizza delivered. One pleasant surprise was free wi-fi and computer rentals (yeah, you heard me; who knows why anyone would do this at a skate rink, but I don't judge). Since I'm a total slave to my iPhone, anyplace with free wi-fi is on my good side. We had a few wusses who refused to put on skates, something about "an expensive recent surgery" or some such whining. They still had a great time between watching our never-skated-before friends defy death and the "we're here every night" pros showing off. Other non-skating fun: a few old school arcade games, claw machines, and an air hockey table. Tips: Cheapskates (heh) can go to the website to print out a $1 off coupon, but it's no good on Tuesday's adult night. Check their Myspace page http://www.myspace.com/playlandskate or call to learn about special events (such as the free beer at the adult Halloween party on 10/28). For the parents, Playland offers a pretty decently priced party package for kids' gatherings ($5.50-$7 per kid, depending on the day of the week). Available times are limited to after school (4-6p) on Tues & Fri, or a 2 hr block on the weekend (between 3 & 9 on Sat, or 2-4 Sun). Keep in mind, this place is OLD; the carpet is filthy and reeks from the smokers on bingo night, so you probably don't want toddlers crawling around on the floor. What a fun date night for people of all ages! Adult night is on Tuesdays from 7-11pm!! They play throwback 90s hiphop and pop songs. There is no disco ball like in roll bounce but there are fun colored lights. This ring is pretty standard size. They have a small beginners area to practice if you need it (but it is quite small). The entry was $18 for 2 of us and that included the rental of the roller skates! They have lockers for your belongings but I recommend just leaving important things in your pockets. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because all of the employees were not the most professional, although some were friendly and it didn't bother me too much. Also, another downside is that a lot of people that come here are very good, like they've been skating there whole lives, so its easy to kind of get intimidated by the fast skaters going around you. BUT, just maintain your space and speed and you should be okay. Overall, this place is great, I can't wait until I go back next Tuesday! read more

So Pyper wanted her seventh birthday to be a skate party. We used the online application to put a deposit down and reserve the party. Upon arrival the guest were brought in and stamped or had wristbands put on. Everyone got their skates quick and easy. They brought pitchers of water and soda and made sure that we had cups and forks. They were very attentive and made sure that whatever we needed we had. The kids had a great time and her birthday party was announced over the loudspeaker. The only complaint I have is the little pipe things plastic pipe things that they use for the people who aren't really good skaters skating aids were five dollars apiece. Anyone in my party who wanted one went up and they charged my party. $30 of my bill where these plastic skate training things that I didn't know people were checking out. Maybe there was some confusion but I don't remember being explained that I'd have to pay for them. All in all it was a good day and the birthday girl had a great time. I would suggest that they put on the website or tell the people prior to showing up that each plastic skate trainer is five extra dollars added on top of their bill. That way the host of the party can control or get the parents to pay for their kids skate trainer. My children can skate without them so I had to pay for somebody else's children who didn't. That is a cost that can be passed on to the parent if we knew prior to. Maybe a little nitpicky on my part but like I said overall the birthday girl had a good time and enjoyed herself. I go here pretty much every Tuesday with my friends. My only complaint is that there NEEDS to be policing on the rink. So many times the "expert" skaters have whizzed past me causing me to fall, hitting me, tripping me, or getting so close to me that I lose my balance or wobble a ton. I'm not a bad skater, but I'm pretty new. So many times I've been hurt or run into like this and have fallen and looked for a referee or staff member and I usually only see around two, not paying attention to what's happening on the floor or not caring. They've never stopped to see if I'm okay and they've never intervened or made sure these skaters take it down a notch. I get that they're proud of their skills and they're talented, but why must they insist on cutting people off every second? Most of them don't even turn around if they cause someone to fall. I don't go as often anymore because I don't feel like being pushed around or having an anxiety inducing experience when I'm coming to chill and have a fun skate. The worst is this pack of guys that one after the other whizz past me (and others) and I nearly fall or have to kind of stop so I don't lose my balance. It's gotten so bad that I'm considering customizing a t-shirt saying "new skater, give me space please" or something like that because I'm tired of the staff not helping and these other skaters basically bullying everyone else. I'm just asking that there be policing on the rink so the beginners like me can actually enjoy ourselves. I do NOT recommend Tuesday nights for new skaters trying to learn. You and your kids are NOT SAFE here during COVID. They are not enforcing the mask mandate. The skate ref, the manager, a wall of adults all with masks under their chin or under their nose. This is the second time I've been to the rink and seen the same behavior. I left after only 20 minutes because it's obvious they do not care about anyone's health and safety. I've been coming to this rink for years and can tell their under new management that are careless and are not paying attention to this incredibly important manner. I took my 14 year old for her birthday but didn't reserve a table because there were only 5 kids. Brought a small box of cupcakes and they said no food unless we'd reserved a party, and offered to put them in their refrigerator. When it was time to leave, I asked to get them back and they'd been dropped on the ground. They'd tried scooping the frosting back on with a spoon, but it was not good. I'm sure they felt bad, the birthday girl hand made and decorated those for her friends and cried in the car. My own fault for not knowing the rules, I get it, but still a bummer of a party. read more

Had no idea this place existed! I go to the Pluckers around the corner weekly and this place has been here the whole time (behind the Nissan dealership)! Oh goodness, it brought the child out of me! It is so much fun! The rink is in great shape considering how old this place is, the skates are also in great shape. It's $8 per person and you can rent rollerblades for an extra $3. You are also able to bring you own skates as well and they also sell some if you would like to purchase your own. There are walker rentals for those who are new to skating so that is nice for the little kids just learning. There are lockers to keep your items in, for 50 cents per use, also a $25 lost key fee too. I left my shoes out though and no one took them so that is nice. It seems that a lot of people tend to do that as well. There is seating by the skate rental area as well as seating around the rink. There is a small snack bar there with a few items, but I'm not sure what they have to offer. I haven't gotten anything there yet. There are a lot of parties there as well too. Back on skates after a 10 yr hiatus. Now have a 5yr old and took her to see how it goes. We've been going 2-3 times a week now for the last month and this is an absolutely fantastic rink! My 10 year old and I came here for a girls night and it was fabulous! I hadn't been on skates in decades and I was instantly transported back in time - the fun lights and music helped :-) When my girl got tired, there was a little arcade area to play our favorites Down the Clown and Skee-ball. There is a climbing thing and air hockey too. $9 for admission which includes skate rental is a great deal. The snack bar could definitely use an overhaul, next time we'll eat a full meal before. Every staff member with whom we interacted was polite and wonderful. The ref who swooped over when my daughter fell was so sweet to her. We will absolutely come here again, again again! read more

I went here for my husbands work party and man was it a hit! I felt like I was walking back into middle school. The nostalgia hit everyone hard. I can't tell you how it would be during normal business hours since it was shut down just for us, but we thoroughly enjoyed our time. They have the four wheel skates as well as blades so it works for all types of users. There is even a walker looking thing if you aren't used to skating. The decorations are top notch. They played 80's and 90's jams, which kept everyone excited for the next song. All the staff was very nice and accommodating. I really want to love this place but I always leave having less fun than I hoped for. Two things would really make this place awesome: play better music (I think the whole world can go without hearing "Baby Got Back" for the rest of our lives and it has played EVERY time I've gone), less one hit wonders from the 90s and 00s and more stuff people can groove to! Disco, r&b, whatever! Anything but the cheesy stuff they play, sing after song after song. Second: Adopt and enforce some kind of system like slower and new skaters in the middle and fast skaters on the outer rink. It's a free for all, and the fast skaters are mixed in with the super slow skaters who can't balance. It's unnerving and not fun. The staff is always VERY friendly and positive and the floor is always super clean, so I certainly commend them for that. I wish it were more like the Rollercade in San Antonio. read more

This review is overdue and overthought, but before now it wasn't probably a fair assessment for me to give one. I've been skating here on and off for about 6 months. I was an avid skater as a kid, and as a middle age woman decided to give it another whirl, and hubby and I have continued to go. We only go to the Adult Skate nights, which are on Tuesdays and Saturdays. So as far as the rink itself goes, this one is fine. It's pretty big, the floor is kept in good condition, and it's clean. Right there, that gives them a BIG advantage over a lot of other area rinks. They seem to bring in pretty good DJs and the music is a good volume, unlike some of the other places where my already deaf self leaves with worse hearing than when I arrived. However, they need to do better - A LOT BETTER - to control what goes on inside the rink. Skating is dangerous on its own, but to ignore many of the issues I see weekly just feels, well, negligent. For example: -Why are people vaping pot INSIDE the rink?! Don't tell me this doesn't happen, I see them and smell them doing it. And then one night, after seeing someone do this, saw him cause an EPIC crash with two beginners that I myself almost got tangled up in. -People skating around on their fucking cell phones. Please put a stop to this! This is a very crowded, fast moving skate floor of all different levels with some VERY aggressive and fast skaters. Someone weaving around in front of us with their nose buried in their phone is NOT GOOD. -Speaking of aggressive skaters, there is so much poor ettiquette that goes on that is NOT addressed. For example, they will do a beginnner skate song, but assholes still speed around. STOP THEM. Can't we just have one song where maybe we can like, IDK, practice our backward skating (or whatever) without feeling like we have to risk our lives? The funny thing is, this rink is one of the better ones, so this is kind of hard to lay all this out here. I hope that the mission of this rink is for people to show up and have a good time, but when you see these types of things, it really makes me question it. I will keep coming back because overall, it's the better place to skate but this all makes me just want to stop skating altogether, and I really don't want to do that. So please pay attention to this review and see what you can do ok? read more

All I gotta say is Playland is a money maker! I didn't think roller skating was still a thing with the kids. The facility is a throwback to better days of teen angst and killer tunes. There isn't much of a beginner section, but they offer (for a price) training wheels, which is basically an old lady's walker with wheels. Brought my daughter here for her 11th birthday on Tuesday. She loves skating and we had the best time! My brother was miserable at first because he had never skated in his life, and was having the hardest time trying to figure it out and the employee in the middle of the rink came over and helped him and soon enough my brother was out there not falling anymore. Clean facility, great prices and all the employees had great attitudes. Over all we had a great experience here. Thanks so much for a good time. We will be coming back! I love playland roller skating center! Sure there is other skating rinks in Austin, but they pale in comparison to this local classic. The skate floor is recently redone so it is in excellent condition. The people who work here are great too! Very friendly! My six year old son is just learning to skate and the Skate Mates have been a huge blessing in helping him learn and actually have fun doing it. Skating at Playland is always a fun time, no matter when you go. They play great music and its fun to watch the regulars dance around the rink. I have been coming to Playland regularly for the past few years and I will continue to come here as long as possible. My kids love to skate here and so do I. And dont worry about the admission price. It is not expensive. Go skate your butt off at Playland and have some fun already. read more

They do have a small area to practice in, but it stays crowded, so my husband and I just jumped right out onto the floor. Plenty of seating, snack bar, and a few video games as well. We had a blast there on NYE. It was our first time visiting we brought my 8yr old daughter and 2yr old daughter. My 8yr old got a pair of skates last year and loves to ride around our complex so this was long over due for her. She had a smile on her face the whole time we stayed about 2 hours and did the ballon drop which was awesome NYE fun for kids. Best place to skate ever I've been going since I was 7 with my parents and it's just a great place to go with friends and family.

One of my kids attended a birthday party here on a Saturday afternoon. Very busy time. I dropped her off and came back to pick her up later. Upon picking her up, I had to bring my other two children, one of which was 6. The person at the front said I had to leave them at the front door, they couldn't go inside, which was a bit unnerving because you know the front desk person isn't keeping an eye on my child and the door is left wide open. Anything could happen to a 6 year old. Also, if you haven't been in this place, it is dark and hard to find your child skating around in a huge crowd of people. It's not like a 1 minute pickup, I was in there for probably 10 minutes trying to get my child out of there. I'm not sure why they stamp your hand if it isn't to see who can be skating or picking up skates to skate with. Anyways, if you are picking up a child from a party, don't bring your other children because they will be left outside alone while you go in to find your other one(s). read more

I love a wood floor rink. Being a fab child of 80's, this was totally my jam.. Every weekend you could find us at the local rink, and it was beautiful wood planked flooring. The rinks with rubber floors drive me mad. It's almost like you don't have to really work to get anywhere, because they are too smooth. So when I found Playland-- I was pretty excited to say the least. The rink is massive. Probably one of the bigger facilities I've ever seen. This is great for skating, but that also means they can allow more people in. We went on a Saturday, and it was packed to the brim with parties. Lots of trying not to trip over little kids, but you will have that cause they are just learning how to skate. :) They have a playscape at the back which is a great idea to keep toddlers busy. There is an arcade, a pro shop, a section for kids practice and snack shop inside. One of the setbacks of the rink is the railing is very short, so no dragging yourself along to learn or stopping with a wall here. You are going to have to learn proper stopping! They rent out little PVC pipes helpers, which are all over the rink during a family day. Excellent little helpers. My one tiny complaint -- cause there has to be one is the parents who don't skate, and walk their kids around the rink. That's a bad hazard for all the moving parts, cause they tend to be smack dab in the middle of the rink where all the better skaters are (no not the inner circle middle). And they stop. A lot. They are harder to avoid than the kids who fall. Overall-- we enjoyed it and look forward to returning. 1 star taken away for the crowds-- but more money with more people.. I get it! read more

Omigod y'all! Adult Skate Night is where it's at! Get a bunch of your friends together on a Tuesday night, don your knee-high socks and favorite 80's hair band t-shirt, pay $8 to rent a pair of vintage beige skates, and go relive your childhood (or the childhood you wish you had). It's 18+ only, so you don't have to worry about any youngsters reminding you just how old you really are. The DJ plays requests and randomly declares songs as ladies only, men only, couples skate, and reverse direction, just to keep you on your toes. The snack bar serves up pizza, nachos, hot dogs, sodas, and candy - all of which seem overpriced initially, but after a few hours of skating, you'll gladly pay any price for a slice of pizza. I only wish they also sold alcohol - or at least allowed BYOB - but I guess I can see how that would be a little bit dangerous. So... see you there next Tuesday? read more

Went to a birthday party for a friend's 8 yr. old this past weekend, and OMG, y'all. UTTER chaos. Here's the deal--they oversell the place, big time. They crowd the parents and kids in there until there is, literally, no room to move (except on the rink itself). I've been to plenty of other big party places like this (bouncy house places, bowling alleys, etc.), and they stagger the party times. At Playland, it seemed like every party that was happening was crammed in to the same 1:00 - 3:00 timeframe. It was pretty miserable. Also, in those other party places there is usually a staff member assigned to each party to help, answer questions, etc. If there was someone assigned to our party, they must've also been assigned to 5 other parties because I never saw them. First off, if you have a party of say 10 kids, you actually need TWO tables: One for the kids, cake, presents, plates, etc. and one for the parents. We were crammed on to one table and there was simply no room to move with another party crammed up against us at the next table, and two other parties occuring just across the (very crowded) walkway area. It was madness. Second, do you REALLY need to require someone to leave their driver's license to rent one of those skate mate things (which are ridiculous, btw). It's not like anyone's going to roll out the front door with one of those goofy things. Finally--either tokens or cash for your games. Pick one. As we left, my daughter said, "I want to have MY birthday party there!!" And as much as I'd like to have a roller skating party for her, there's no way I'd do it at Playland based on my experience this past weekend. read more

So i spent many a jr. high party in a place called FantasyLand skate center -- eating free hot dogs, mini sodas, buying invisible ink and glow sticks. We'd skate, play mortal kombat (blancaaaaaaaaaa!) and wait with bated breath until the limbo was announced. As a result, I've always had a soft spot for skating places. This is no exception. Tuesday night adult skate night is about the best exercise you can get. For $7, strap on a pair of quads and enjoy three hours of thigh building, butt lifting, heart pumping skating. Or if you are more of a people watcher, please realize that this is your mecca. It might not get better than this. There's a skate mafia, michael jackson tunes, a giant disco ball in the shape of a skate, old dudes in cut offs, young show offs riding the rails and you know, me, behind all of them, just trying to stay upright. If you're into alternative forms of exercise (goodbye treadmill!) drop in and take a lap. It feels just as good as it did when you were a kid -- except this time you don't have to worry about who's gonna win the limbo rock. read more

It's a hard time for everyone right now with a lot of people stuck in their homes, so when I saw online that Playland was currently offering discounted/super reasonably priced small private parties for 10 people or less I jumped at the opportunity. It was a great way for me and a couple of friends to be able to skate and enjoy eachothers company and have our nerves at ease because we had all the room to social distance and didn't have to worry about telling strangers to cover their nose with their mask too. I would like to say a special thank you to Wilber, who was the supervisor working our party and not only took all of our ridiculous music requests, but made my two friends whose birthdays are this week have the best night out they've been able to have in a long time.
