    Cavatelli

Cozy and charming little restaurant that serves vegan and is NOT BYOB (outdated yelp description). We reserved seats at the chef's counter and were seated right in front of the door. It wasn't too cold outside but still felt chilly and drafty in our seats. We ordered a bottle of the cider which was tasty but served in freezing cold glasses which wasn't ideal since we were already cold and the bottle was plenty chilled. We really enjoyed the gold beet starter which was super creamy with lots of dill and the sourdough focaccia was good but very oily. The cavatelli main was tasty but I found the raw peppers to not quite fit with the flavors of the dish and they felt like an afterthought. We also got the cauliflower curry which was good. I would've loved to see the chef showcase some more vegan proteins as none of the dishes seemed to have any substantial amount of protein.

Pietramala has been getting some serious press recently, so we knew we wanted to make a trip over. We made late-ish night reservations on a Friday with friends, one of whom is vegetarian / mostly vegan. Pietramala is on a popular street in No Libs, so you can easily make an evening out of a trip by stopping in other nearby stores, etc. We decided to drive, and we easily found parking right outside the restaurant. It's a small spot with pretty limited seating and waiting area, so we were happy to have snagged a res. We were prompt for our reservation, but with some diners ahead of us taking their time, we weren't seated for another 20-30 minutes past our res time. This wasn't a huge deal at all, but the limited space in the restaurant did make waiting challenging (esp since there were others waiting too) and since it was a chilly night, waiting outside wasn't ideal either. The employees were very apologetic for the delay in seating us and quite accommodating (I think they threw in a free dish), which definitely made it a more bearable waiting period! As most readers probably know, Pietramala is a fully vegetarian restaurant. That might turn some people off, but it totally shouldn't. Pietramala is a work of art - the way they work the menu without a lick of meat is amazing. For our table of 4, we debated getting the whole menu vs just a few dishes. After reviewing the menu, we were easily swayed to just get the whole thing, which was a great decision. It was a very reasonable amount of food - we finished nearly all of it without feeling super gross or overly stuffed. Every bite was delectable, again working so creatively with vegetables and accompaniments. Our standout dishes were sourdough focaccia, the murasaki sweet potato, the saku saku cabbage, and the comb tooth mushroom. All bites were unreal and satisfying, pairing so well from both flavor and texture standpoints. We all truly loved every dish! Pietramala is BYOB, so we paired all dishes with a solid red which rounded out the meal. Prices were super reasonable - for getting the entire menu, I was shocked at the final cost for the 4 of us. The BYOB nature and thrown in freebie from the staff of course helps with that :) Service was great, our server helping us figure out the menu and sharing her favorites. I would suggest somehow making the waiting experience better (reserving spots at the bar for waiters) and / or optimizing scheduling reservations to avoid prolonged wait periods. But despite this slight hiccup, we loved our visit to Pietramala - even as a meat eater, I was blown away by this vegetable-forward meal!

When I heard the Michelin Restaurants had been chosen for Philly I had to check out the list for myself. I have never heard of green star for a restaurant but the idea of vegan food sounded amazing. We had Lancaster farm fresh honeynut squash, urban roots farms murasaki sweet potatoes, mycopolitan black pearl mushroom, and Lancaster farm fresh cauliflower. The honeynut squash wasn't my favorite dish. It was a whole squash cut in half with a ton of seed like items on top. The reason I didn't like this dish was because there was tahini all over the dish. I felt like the tahini did not add to the squash. I really liked the sweet potato dish. I felt like the cashew cream tasted amazing and was very creamy. The buffalo sauce was very tasty. The buffalo sauce mixed with the cashew cream sauce tasted amazing. I liked the cauliflower dish as well. It had bok choy and these fingerling potatoes. It was delicious. The mushrooms had mashed potatoes underneath them. The mushrooms were grilled and tasted like steak and mashed potatoes in my opinion.

Have only heard things and finally popped in, would return for the beets and sweet potato alone. Excellent service and helpful staff.

Vegetables are extremely fresh and Grown with a nutritious soul! Service was well nurtured with a respectful banter. Had a wonderful ambiance and light soulful music in the background. Was so focused on food that took only 1 picture of main course . Will be back again.

I've been wanting to check out Pietramala for quite some time now and am so glad I got to try it out. I came in a group of 4 for dinner on a Saturday night and we had a lovely experience. The atmosphere is so cozy and homey. Service was great throughout our meal with plenty of water refills. To drink, we all had a Pomelo Paloma (pomelo, lime, agave) which was nice and refreshing. We all split 7 of the menu items. Here's a ranking (from favorite to least favorite): Fried Chicken of the Woods with preserved jimmy nardello jelly - crispy and not too heavy, and the jelly was delicious Sourdough Focaccia with tomato XO - seems silly to rate bread so highly but it was incredible! Grilled Oyster Mushrooms with sweet corn, shishito, shelling beans - the oyster mushroom-corn combo gave it such a nice balance of earthiness to creaminess Golden Beet Salad with beet tamari aioli, sour chard, crispy sunchoke - the crispy sunchoke especially was so delicious Smashed Murasaki Sweet Potato with yuzu koshō buffalo, sour cashew cream, chives - sweet potato melted in your mouth; the sauce kind of gave a creamsicle vibe which was interesting Honeynut Squash with husk cherry, habanero, pumpkin seed tahini - the squash was creamy and the tahini was delicious - definitely spicy from the habanero! Pappardelle with wild mushroom ragù, spigarello, bird's beak peppers - mushroom ragu was great, the bird's beak peppers were a little off-putting (not from spice, perhaps from acidity?) Overall, we had a fantastic experience and I'm happy to have another high-end vegan restaurant in Philly!

Incredibly fresh, flavorful food! Highly recommend Pietramala! Ambiance & Service: Dimly lit and intimate--perfect for a date. Our server was friendly and gave excellent recommendations. The food takes time, so it's not ideal for a quick meal. Food: We had the Focaccia, Beefsteak Tomatoes, Roasted Beans, Shitake Mushrooms, and Harissa Eggplant. Every dish was bursting with flavor, and the produce was exceptionally fresh. We left feeling full, but not overly stuffed. TL;DR: Amazing fresh food in a cozy, intimate setting. Try the beans and shitake mushrooms!

I've been wanting to go to Pietramala for ages, and we finally had the opportuntiy to celebrate our anniversary here. It is a small, intimate vegan BYOB ($10 corkage fee) restaurant. The food and service were excellent. Our server gave us incredible recommendations since we were stuck wanting to eat the whole menu, a good problem to have. I loved every dish, but my absolute favorite was the focaccia! The bread was perfect, and that xo sauce was wild, almost had a hint of pepperoni style flavor. I've wanted to try chicken of the wood mushrooms forever, and I really loved them in their play on 'chicken nuggets'. The texture was perfect, fried truly perfectly, not oily or greasy at all, and the sweet and sour sauce was authentic - what a treat for those that may miss fried breaded chicken! My least favorite was the pasta dish, not that I didn't like it - I just loved the others so much more. I'm not a huge squash fan, but I very much enjoyed that dish with the habanero sauce. My next favorite dish was the creamy corn and grilled oyster mushrooms. They got a great char on the mushrooms, adding to the texture and taste of them - contrasting the creaminess of the corn - ** chefs kiss ** We had a fantastic meal, and cannot wait to come back to try some of the other dishes. This was hands down, the best vegan food I've had in my life thus far. I left incredibly happy, and incredibly inspired to try to recreate some of these in my vegan home. Thank you so much to the entire team for a meal to remember for a lifetime.

My partner found this place when looking up date night spots in Philly, especially since I'm a vegetarian - I can't believe I hadn't heard of Pietramala before we dined here! Service was good - despite being 40 minutes late because of traffic, an Uber that took a wrong turn, and other variables, we were seated as soon as we arrived. The restaurant had a nice lowlight, cozy ambiance and felt quite intimate. We tried a couple of dishes but the standout and memorable item was the sourdough focaccia with tomato XO. The tomato XO had a slight kick, and was the perfect pair for the crusty focaccia. There were also some dishes with elements that did not seem vegan, they were so well-made - like a vegan creme fraiche, with the perfect creamy texture. I would try Pietramala again as they change their menus frequently, even though it is super pricey for the portions in each dish - would say about 7/10 for our first visit!

From start to finish... amazing! If you are vegan, if you are not vegan, it doesn't matter. Make a reservation and dine here. Please start with the focaccia. It is so delicious and you will also want it for every sauce that comes from any dish. The primordia cremini carpacccio is so delicious! The Meyer lemon takes it over the top with freshness. We also ordered the green meadow durum tortellini with cultured cashew ricotta. The menu is seasonal and there's no guarantee this will be on next weekends menu but if it is, you should order it. The sweet potato with the buffalo sauce was a perfect invention and the beet salad with the crispy sunchokes was a texture explosion! This place is special and the food that is coming from the kitchen is special. Trust me. It's also a wonderful place with great atmosphere, wonderful service and sexy lighting. We celebrated a birthday and such a sweet touch with a candle at the end. (Along with a decadent chocolate dessert with bay, sesame, mesquite.) Make a reservation and bring wine and enjoy this incomparable place. You will not be sorry.

Gotta give props to Pietramala...not only a great destination for vegans, but for omnivores alike. If you are not a vegetarian or vegan, I would still highly recommend trying this spot out. It's a cozy & quaint, storefront-esk type of dining experience. We had the pleasure of sitting at one of the booths, which comfortably sat 4 of us, right at the front window. We had great views of the entire restaurant, open-air kitchen, and plenty of opportunity for people watching on busy 2nd street. Their menu is pretty impressive - nice variety and creative offerings. They tout a focus on seasonality, fermentation, and preservation - and that is easy to see. While the food itself was good, I was most impressed by the appearance. It felt like each plate had vibrant color combinations and overall eye catching plating techniques. They recommend 2-3 plates per person, so as a party of 4, we just ordered one of everything + dessert. We found that it was the perfect amount of food for your group. Some of my favorite bites: - Honeynut Squash: I thought their pumpkin seed tahini was really innovative, and really matched two earthy flavors together nicely. The touch of habanero was the kicker here - gave it a great level of spice. - Golden Beets: Loved the sweet and sour combination - Sweet Potato: Their house hot sauce was delicious! - Tagliatelle: the "ragu" of the woods was tender and did a great job of holding the tomato miso sauce. The only real hang up we had was on their corkage fee...a little funny that they are a BYO and then charge people to open the wine. To be fair, I think we had them in a bit of bind by bringing multiple bottles (some of them pre-opened and a mix of wine/liquor) so they just charged us $20 for the table. I would just inquire about this before heading in - they made it seem like it only applies to wine (& perhaps just one bottle.) All-in-all...solid dinner!! Don't hesitate to try it out.

Shiitake mushrooms with creamy corn base and shisito peppers
    Gabrielle B.

The food was really lovely and tasted earthy! I appreciated that they didn't try to make fake "tastes-like-chicken" dishes and just let the vegetables and pasta speak for themselves. The corn base of the Shiitake dish was the best part.

At first, I was worried we would only be able to get bar seating since neither of us put in a reservation. Luckily, the wait staff was able to seat us at a booth as long as we finished by 8pm---perfect! We weren't super hungry, but we were able to share one of the appetizers and get dishes for each of us. The appetizer we got was the rutabaga fondue, with pretzel bread and pickled veggies. It was an intriguing dish and the pickled veggies added an interesting tang. For my entree, I got the grilled tofu with kanzuri glaze, okinawa potato, sunchoke miso butter, fancy radishes, and shiso. The presentation was very much on point! For the two of us, our entire meal was around $80. A great experience from start to finish!

I enjoyed the spicy dan dan noodles, made with delicious mushrooms. Everything else was just fine or too smoky for my tastes. I had a really nice glass of wine with my meal.
