In town to catch a Tigers game and wanted pizza with both Vegan and Gluten Free options. Pie Sci to the rescue! They have your traditional choices along with Vegan and Gluten Free. It is a very clean and homey dinning area! The staff makes you feel welcomed from the get go! Our visit to Detroit was in the 90's with very high humidity which kept us indoors. They also have a garden patio out back which would have been my preference if the temperature was a bit lower. My family and I all had small square pizzas. We had a Veggie D on gluten free and made vegan with the cashew cheese. My daughter was in a happy place with her choice. We also had a Pep Squad made vegan with the follow your heart cheese. Another hit. I had Hawaiian 5-0 on gluten free along with the jalapeño bbq sauce. My pizza was great! They serve Faygo soda which is great. Their homemade version of the Choco Taco was great! As hot as it was. I was going to ask if I could get it out of their walk-in freezer myself!
Pretty good pizza I ordered the veggie pizza with beef pepperoni, crust had cujin and sesame the pizza was completely covered with toppings which I loved and full of flavor but unfortunately their were a few slices that had a few bites that the dough was not completely cooked. But the rest was yummy
This is one of the best gluten free dairy free pizzas I've ever had! I didn't know there was such a thing of GF thick crust, and when I finally found a spot with GF thick crust and DF cheese, I was over the moon to try it. The pizza went beyond my expectations. The crust was soft and tasty. The cheese was plentiful and actually melted. The toppings were also plentiful. The staff were also really helpful. My only disappointment was that I didn't buy another pizza to take home to freeze. Not sure what cheese or crust they use, but I will be back every time I visit Detroit no matter what. I wish all GF DF pizza could taste like this!
Heard great things about this place and finally stopped in. It is much smaller inside than I was expecting. We got two small pizzas, a pepperoni and supreme square. Nice outside crisp cheese on crust, crust was really nice, I was expecting a much more dense crust but it was airy, which was great! Flavor of the toppings was great and sauce was nice. Would for sure come back!
Yummy! I only like thin crust pizza, and this hit the spot. I had the BLT, which was delicious in the future. I'll get it with even more tomatoes. My daughter had the Keegan Michael gnocchi, two thumbs up. My sister-in-law had the Hawaii Five-0, another two thumbs up.
Pie Sci is a staple local pizza joint serving both classic and imaginative pies in traditional Detroit style (or round, if that's your thing!) Both times I've dined in was for a collaboration pizza between Pie Sci and Khana, the "Butter Chicken" pizza. It's truly a masterpiece. We got there early on a Monday evening and snagged a table, and watch them get progressively busier the whole night. There's never not a pizza in the oven. You order at the counter, grab your seat, and one of the workers calls your name at the counter in a sing-songy fashion that prompts you to want to respond in the same way. Nice to see them having fun with it! Pictured: Cheese bread, Butter Chicken pizza (speciality, not usually available) we made this disappear quickly!
Visiting from Indiana. We needed some legit Detroit style pizza and, boy, did we find it. Employee's were nice and helped us quickly. Cute little shop. Unique toppings with plenty of vegetarian options. Crust was well made. Clever food combinations. I had the devastator and that curry ketchup really sealed the deal! Definitely coming back
I recently went here and I have to say that it was alright. I did enjoy the pizza although the texture of cheese not so much. The dough is the kind where you need a drink with it! My boyfriend who is not a vegan enjoyed the cheese bread the most and had no complaints about the pizza! I'm not too sure what the inside of the restaurant looked like or how good the service was, although my boyfriend went into the place and I heard no complaints from him. I ordered the pizza online and it was done in about 20 minutes! I'd like to add that I would definitely come here again. The pizza is very filling and I like that we can customize our pizza with a bunch of different toppings. I can appreciate this being a vegan place because there's not many near my area!!
I am a fiend for Detroit style pizza. I so wanted to love Pie Sci, but I can't say anything really stood out. The menu itself is quite creative. With options like Hawaii 5-0, pickle rich, and even Alfredo. I went for the fennel sausage, Which sounds wonderful in theory. Technically speaking, it falls short. I'm looking for the distinctive crispy outer crust I've come to love and the chewy thickness of the crust itself. The pizza itself would could have really benefited from a sauce to top it off(as often you find on this style), or even a drizzle of some sort. I wish I could say more, but it's all just subtle and underwhelming. Since the very first encounter I had with Detroit style pizza, I've been shouting its praises from the rooftops. I've now had it all over the country, and some absolutely incredible pies to say the least. But one thing that continues to mystify me is why I simply cannot find a great Detroit style in.....Detroit! The search continues....
I'm always on the lookout for delicious gluten free pizza, and my husband and I were in the area, so we decided to give Pie Sci a chance. Goodness! I am so glad that we did. The pizza was large and delicious. The staff were very friendly. There aren't a lot of tables to sit at, but that wasn't a big deal to us. The gluten free crust is thin and crispy, somewhat like a thick cracker. We got the Pickle Rick. My husband, who eats gluten, even said it was one of the best pizzas he's had. There is street parking, and as it's across the street from a university, I'd imagine it's quite popular among college students. We will definitely be back.
One of the best Detroit Style pies, and with that responsibility everything is divine from the crust crispness and flavor to the crazy flavors. And crazy isn't that crazy, I had a strawberry balsamic pie that still makes my mouth water. Pie Sci isn't afraid to try new things and that's what makes it so great - when you go (because you have to) try the weekly flavor it's usually worth the risk! With any Detroit style pie, it does take a while in the oven, but it is better fresh. They do have seating, but it is minimal.
i've had SO many recommendations to try pie sci! did not disappoint!! i got the 8x10 square fig lebowski, it was sweet and savory and crispy and just all around so delicious:) i love the vibe in the shop too and the staff is so so nice! will definitely be coming here again!!

Ok i have been wanting to come here for two years and always have something come up or I'm in the area way to early in the day. BUT it finally happened! Some beautiful Michigan weather so took the trek to Detroit and grabbed this pizza and headed to belle isle to enjoy! Pulled up and ordered, I def recommend ordering ahead and coming bc there isn't a lot to park but street parking, the cars move quickly tho! After a long debate because I wanted one slice of everything lol I decided on the jerky boys pizza. It was so garlicky which in my book is a HUGE win! (garlic is one my favorite things) Mozzarella, jerk chicken, onion, pineapple and roasted jalapeño bbq was delicately and strategically placed so every bite was flavor packed. Def gonna ask for more sauce next time it is was the perfect addition to compliment the chicken and esp the pineapple! Can't wait to explore the rest of the menu! read more

We had someone recommend this place so we decided to check it out. This place is definitely worth the five star rating! They are so many flavorful and interesting topping options. It was a group of three of us and we decided to build our own pie. They have small and large options for the pie and they also offer either round or deep dish options. All of the ingredients tasted super fresh and it is hands down one of the best pizzas I've had in a while. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere of the place is very chill! So many options for regular and specialty pizzas but if you cannot decide then definitely build your own because it's worth it! If you are a visual person, I've included a picture of our pizzas for proof of how delicious they looked when they were brought out. The restaurant has indoor seating and and outdoor patio area. If the weather is nice and you like being outside I definitely recommend enjoying your pie outside. The outdoor patio is cute and offers a nice outdoor environment for you to enjoy a delicious meal. Do not eat here if you are gluten sensitive!!!! My husband and I ate here for dinner and now he is very sick from their "gluten free" pizza. It's a risk you take when eating out but he has not been this ill from gluten in so long. I want to add though that the food we had was absolutely delicious and friendly staff so this place gets 5 stars. I wanted my review to be based on how good the food is but wanted to warn others that are gluten sensitive. read more

Literally I could eat from here everyday! Currently I'm obsessed with the Vegan Nacho Mama, I actually like the square better & the Shell Raiser square! I've never had their non vegan options so I can't speak on that BUT BOY OH BOY! These vegan pizzas are incredible! Even down to the crust! I hope this place stays around for forever bc I haven't had vegan pizza done this well! It's a bonus that they are still open during quarantine, they have curbside pickup where they bring it right out to your car! I love it! read more
First time here since, 4 years ago when they were in the bar next door. Cute little spot with limited seating. They have some pizzas by the slice if you're just stopping in. You can call ahead or order when you arrive. We ordered 2 pizzas, the one with tabbouli and one with mushrooms . Flavors were on-point. Crust is really crunch on the bottom. If someone ever asks me if being vegan makes me feel deprived of delicious food (especially pizza), I'll kindly point them in Pie Sci's direction. Not only do they have an ever-changing menu full of creative and delicious-sounding pizza, but almost all of them can be made vegan and vegetarian and they're honestly the best people in the world for that. Two of us split two smalls (and had leftovers, in addition to being so full we hated ourselves for a little while). Not bad for $24 -- including the $1 sticker I bought because stickers. The vegan Nacho Mama is absolutely loaded with toppings and I really don't think anyone would be able to tell it's vegan. The lettuce + tomatoes were fresh and healthy-looking and the rest of the toppings were great, as well. My boyfriend felt the Tamale G needed a bit of sweetness in the hot sauce (it presumably uses regular Valentina while the non-vegan uses honey Valentina), but I didn't think it was missing anything. It had lots of Masa bits and seasoned seitan -- would recommend. I wanted to come back as soon as we walked out the door. I can't recommend this place enough. read more

Coming from Chicago, I'd like to say we have the best pizza. Let me tell ya, I was wrong. Pie Sci was hands down the best pizza I've ever had. I ordered take out and didn't get a chance to see the inside of the place so this review is purely for the food experience. We bought a large ($15) "Are you Alfredo the dark?" (Creamy Alfredo sauce, mozzarella, chicken, fresh mushroom and shaved parmesan cheese) and a small ($9) "Jerky boys" (White pizza with garlic oil, mozzarella, jerk chicken, red onion, pineapple, and roasted jalapeño BBQ drizzle.). They were both fantastic but the winner was definitely the Detroit style Alfredo pizza. With the crispy corners and perfect balance of creamy Alfredo sauce...you literally couldn't ask for more. I so badly wish they had a location in Chicago. If I'm ever back in Detroit this will be my first stop. read more

I have heard about Pie Sci from a few different people and Yelp suggested it as a top spot in Detroit, so I had to check it out This place is fantastic ! Came with a small group and we each ordered a small pizza so we could sample the eclectic menu. We had the Poblano Picasso, the Meat Lovers, Hani Depp, the Al Pastor pizza and their special ( a white pizza with anchovies, capers and roasted peppers. Each pizza pie was so unique and flavor it really surprised us! The crust is an immediate stand-out, slightly crisp on the outside with a pillowy softness on the inside that really blew my mind. Each pizza was so different but they all had one thing in common, high quality ingredients! My favorite was the Al Pastor pizza, it was the best non traditional pizza of ever had. The Mexican pork Taco turned pizza was next level pie!!! I will be back, I still need to try the rest of the menu read more

Good place for pizza! I found about this place while looking in Google for places to eat, it has great reviews. Went there for dinner, their menu was overwhelming. It has so many options to choose and different combination of all kinds of foods. I liked their interior, nice decorations and creativity. It was a not so crowded when I went there but later it started to filling up. They don't have a lot of tables to dine in, most of them are to go. Ordered a small Jerky Boys, it was a weird combination of flavors. It had bbq sauce, jerk chicken and pineapple. This mix of flavors made my pizza taste no good. Overall, good place to try something new, will definitely come back to try other stuff and check more on their popular items. read more

I researched this spot and read tons of reviews before actually ordering. Recently I was in the area so i decided to give them a try especially since they had vegan options to accommodate my recent lifestyle change. I called my order in for carry-out, stopped in picked up my order and was only way. I went for the Shell Raiser pizza, it was delicious! The actual building reminds me of the typical pizza shop in any college town of America. Extremely cool nostalgic ambiance. The employees were friendly my order was ready when promised. The pricing was typical for made to order pizzas. I only wish I were eating the normal style pizzas I'm sure they would be awesome as well! I was totally satisfied with my pizza and experience and plan on returning when I get that pizza crave. It's definitely worth the drive. Came here for the first time during lunch break with a friend. I'd have to say, I was very pleased with the reviews that I had read on yelp prior to arriving. This is a relatively small spot, nice and cozy with pretty cool artwork on the walls. As for the pies, they are delicious. We went with two personal pizzas 10" each, and around $9-11. Pretty good deal. I had the Notorious P.I.G. since i love pork. It had pulled pork, bacon, ham, pepperoni and drizzled with sweet baby ray's bbq sauce. The pizza came out hot, crispy, and burnt my tongue and palate every time I took a bite. But it was totally worth it. Overall, loved the pizza there. Glad I came in before it got crowded later in mid-day. Will be back to try the other pizza options (white sauce). read more

I'm not a vegan but my friend has tons of food restrictions and suggested we try a vegan "pizza" from Pie Sci for lunch....I was less than enthused by the description but was blown away by how delicious it was!!! If their vegan pies are this good, I can't wait to taste their regular pizzas!!! read more
Very good pizza joint hidden just outside Wayne State University. The inside is bright and colorful and the menu is quite unique with interesting names for pizzas. I got the "So Fresco, So Clean". They do round or 4 corners pizza. Definitely will recommend to others read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while. The challenge of course is that I'm not a Detroiter currently (though I was born and raised) and I'm only in town a half dozen or so times a year to visit family. But the stars aligned during my last visit and I had a chance to give this place a try. It just so happened sis#1 and I were accompanying my Dad for a doctor's appointment that thankfully went well. While waiting for my Dad's prescriptions, I called my Mom to give her a status. She wasn't in the mood to cook so asked me to pick up something to eat. I saw my opportunity and gave them a call. The guy answering the phone was very cordial and patient as I gave my order. I chose to do two large BYO Pies. I did one red with pepperoni, mushroom, and basil. The other one I did white with just mozzarella. It wound up being great timing when we finally left the hospital to pick it up. Street parking was plentiful once I arrived there. The place itself was pretty chill, reminded me of a college type eatery. I recognized the guy who answered the phone and he helped me get my order continuing to be pleasant. The pizza smelled great and I couldn't wait to try it. So Pie Sci really knows how to cook a great pizza. It got rave reviews from the family. I liked the chewy crust with a hint of crunch in it. My favorite pie of the two wound up being the mozzarella pizza. I'm really glad I finally had a chance to give them a try and introduce myself to another style of pizza. Usually get decent "3 star pizza" from this place, but today I ordered 3 pies that were totally burnt, and when I called to have them re-done they wanted pictures from multiple angles to prove my complaint, then said the burnt stale pies I waited 45 minutes for were "medium well" and that some people prefer that, even though it is not consistent with any other normally baked pie I've got here. After going back and forth with the worst attempt at customer service I've seen in a while, they offered me a discount on 1 pie for my next order, I told him to shove it. read more

This place was recommended to me because of their vegan options. When I say delicious? This pizza was on point! I got the build your own with vegetables and pineapples. Everything sbout it was great! I am so excited bout this place! My co-workers who are not vegan couldn't believe that it tasted so good. Mine was a carry out but there is a seating area. Pie Sci is one of the most interesting pizza shops I've been to. I strongly prefer it over Supino's as the pizza tastes better and they are open later as well. They have seasonal pizzas that combine toppings and ingredients from other types of food and put in on a pizza. For instance, the Mack Attack is a cheeseburger/Big Mac re-imagined on a pizza and the Jimmy Pesto is a pesto chicken pasta on pizza. There is moderate seating for groups up to 4 and the price and portions are reasonable. For $10 a person, you can enjoy 3-4 slices as well as get a drink. They also have local Detroit City soda for $2.50. The staff is very friendly and there is 1 Hour Street Parking around the corner. The pizza was not overly greasy and was freshly baked.
