Someone I know wanted a vegan cake for their birthday, so I finally had a chance to order one of PPMD's 6" cakes. No, these cakes are not health food, and neither are the cakes you'd get from a non-vegan bakery. No, you shouldn't feed them to your diabetic relatives. That said, it's great to find cruelty-free treats that don't require you to support the dairy or poultry industries. I put the order in on a Friday and heard back the following Monday -- pretty prompt, considering they don't answer emails on weekends. The pickup was easy and pleasant. We got the chocolate-covered strawberry cake. It was better than any non-vegan cake I've ever tried. You could taste the fresh strawberries in the buttercream frosting, and that went well with the moist dark chocolate cake. The birthday person, a chocoholic, was thrilled--said the cake looked elegant, loved the chocolate chips sprinkled on top and around the perimeter, etc. All agreed the cake was not overpoweringly sweet. We had the most incredible experience with Pie, Pie My Darling for our wedding! We have been long time fans of Pie Pie my Darling and they are truly one of the best vegan bakeries in Chicago. Their high quality creations are vegan and most important outstanding. Highly respected and all about not loosing that touch. I think we have tried most of their creation most recent we picked up a trifecta of creations from one of the restaurant partners that they have built out. Raspberry Lemonade 2.0- A new creation which has a good zesty lemon pop with smooth and silky raspberry tones. Moist and amazing ... love this for spring and summer! Hard to find as it's new but if you get the opportunity it's a must! Confetti- I personally really like this cake. It's classic and balanced well. It's a classic cake, vegan and freakin amazing Cookie Dough- my family favorite... it's a 10 out 10 cookie dough explosion topped with chocolate chip cookies. It's seriously amazing. When it comes to vegan goods - scratch that - when it comes to any dessert, this IS the spot! Let me start by saying that it is currently an extremely hard working team of three that is holding down the fort. Due to COVID, the store front is not open and orders must be placed in advance and picked up on specific days of the week to get the best treats in Chicago. If you're on Instagram, head there for more details. Now on to the moist stuff. Yeah, I said it. We typically get our slices of cake at Handlebar or Upton's whenever a new enticing flavor comes out - which is about every 3-4 weeks haha. Trust me, it's worth setting alerts and alarms for as a reminder because their goods sell out QUICKLY. Some of my favorite flavors are: Thin Mint - I think I could eat an entire cake in a sitting. I couldn't, but I'd try. Double Chocolate - three layers of chocolate cake and the most perfectly decadent chocolate frosting between. S'mores - need I say s'more? Snickers - yes, they even perfect some of the best candy bars and turn it into cake form. I now prefer a slice over the candy bar. Cookies & Cream - always the fastest seller at Handlebar and Upton's so don't sleep. This is more of my partners favorite, but the chocolate cake between the cream frosting is on point. Nutter Butter - quite easily the most perfect PB flavor. It even converted a friend of mine who HATES PB. Pumpkin Snickerdoodle - a new babe for me that I didn't realized I loved so much until I bought the cupcake flavor pack before Thanksgiving. They also make different pies, but those seem to be more limited to the holiday during the pandemic at least. Now my head is spinning in circles thinking and remembering all of their cake flavors. I can't believe I haven't left a review for PPMD yet! I've been absolutely in love with PPMD for so many years, back when she did pop-ups around Chicago. I am so glad she now has a store front. I cannot recommend this place enough - whether or not you're vegan, you will love these baked goods. The cakes are absolutely outstanding. I've tried several cake slice flavors at restaurants they're served at, plus ordered cakes (and other goodies) here a few times. It's really hard to go wrong with anything - it's just based on your flavor profile preference. The pre-order process is easy to go through to guarantee yourself some goodies. During these times, this small gem and baker found a way to create such a unique way of bringing together cake and a classic cookie in Nutter Butter. The cake is light and fluffy and the cream filling is the perfect amount of sweet. This cake melted in my mouth and the consistency of the cake was also on point with no cake falling apart. Customer service: I was due to pick up my birthday cake on February 2, the day mother nature dumped a boatload of snow on Chicago. The bakery reached out to me to let me know that if I wanted to pick up my cake I could but I could also reschedule my pick up. Love that customer service!! Hands down the best vegan cake!!! I first discovered PPMD via Instagram. Heather (the owner) is very engaged with her customers and you can tell how much love she puts into her baking. So far I've tried the banana split, lemon, peanut butter pretzel, biscoff, strawberry funfetti cake slices or cake cups (not cupcakes but a small container with a mini cakes inside). I can't honestly tell you which one I prefer over the other because they are all delicious and moist (I have found most vegan cake to be dry before PPMD). Now you can't walk in to get a slice, you can only order on their website once a week from a certain time. Currently, the only day you can pick up your preorder is on Saturday. They do accept cake orders with at minimum of 7 days notice. The menu switches flavors monthly for the cake slices and weekly for the cake cups. Slices are about $9 and the cake cups are $6.50. Also, PPMD donates a portion of their profits each month for organizations that provide help and support for communities such as LGBTQ+, Indigenous, African American, mental health, Ukrainian humanitarian aid, etc. So you get a tasty treat and also help organizations that are making a difference. read more

This is a review of their pre-ordering process, more so than their cakes. Their cakes are phenomenal - which is why I am so sad to leave this kind of review. To Pie Pie: Please, at the very least, consider adding additional detail to your preorder emails. Or perhaps an automated texting system to remind your customers about their orders. I understand that you have more than enough demand, but that doesn't absolve you of trying to notify your customers about orders placed with their hard earned money. They have extremely high demand and have a competitive ordering process. We really wanted to support local Chicago restaurants for Thanksgiving, and decided to splurge on a cake from Pie Pie, and a meal kit from Frontier. To order from Pie Pie, I bookmarked the preorder date (Saturday, 11/14/2020) so we could be sure to refresh the page at the right time. On Saturday, I checked the webpage, and the preorder had been pushed to Monday, 11/16/2020 - during work hours. This was a little frustrating, because it was more difficult to get an order in in between meetings. But between my husband and I, we managed to place an order! Sweet! They sold out very quickly. After placing an order, I received one confirmation email (attached). Note that the is email purely confirms the order, and does not include any details about the order process, when/where to pick up/rules, etc. At the same time, I also placed an order from Frontier (attached). Note that Frontier's email includes specific instructions on when/where to pick up. I marked my calendar for Thanksgiving day, thinking I would pick up both in one fell swoop (my mistake). Additionally, Frontier sent a reminder two days prior with details about pick up. The night before thanksgiving, at around 8 PM, I pulled up my orders to confirm pick up times. It was at that point, that I realized Pie Pie's pick up was that day between 12-6 PM..... all the way at the very bottom of the website, I see that they had a disclaimer about orders being donated if not picked up within the window. I was surprised that they wouldn't give no-shows a call/text to see if they were going to pick up their order. I sent them a question on Instagram immediately and also sent an email, asking if there was any way that I could pick up my cake, or get some sort of partial credit (any amount at all) toward a future purpose. I even said that a guaranteed spot in the next preorder would be great! $44 on a cake is not a trivial amount to spend on a cake - especially during the holidays - ESPECIALLY during the kind of year we've had. My query was met with a cold answer that effectively said 'No, we can't give you anything. Next time, cancel your order if you aren't going to pick it up' I understand that time and effort go into your cakes. I had 0 expectation of a full refund. Even a slot in a future preorder would have been a show of good faith in a loyal customer. read more

On my visit to Chicago to see one of my best friends and his girlfriend and to attend Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo 2019, we ordered and (almost) demolished an entire pie! To celebrate my friend's birthday, his girlfriend ordered a Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzel Pie. It tasted incredible! The presentation, the texture, the flavor, just everything about this pie was amazing! Between the three of us, we almost ate the entire thing in one go. On top of that, the pie is completely Vegan! If they wouldn't have told me, I would never have guessed it. In addition to pies, PPMD makes cakes and what's cool about this is that they take all of the extra cake scraps and shavings and create these mini cake trifles in pack them in mason jars. We ended up trying a Thin Mint Cake trifle and Classic Chocolate Cake trifle. Both were outstanding! It's probably a good thing I don't live in Chicago because I'd be eating these cakes and pies way too much! Okay, let me start off by saying I am not a vegan and I do not typically love cake. Pie, Pie My Darling made me question both of those beliefs. I've now tried their Oreo and Funfetti cakes through Upton's Breakroom and they have LIFTED my quarantine spirit. The cakes are dense, moist (yeah, I said it), and flavorful. The icing has the perfect texture and isn't overly sweet. $9 a slice is worth every penny for something I know is handmade with love, not to mention the slices are enormous and typically end up being three servings (and I have a huge sweet tooth). i had the chocolate hazelnut cake at handlebar and was amazed. the cake itself was moist (not dry at all!) and had a deep chocolate flavor without being too rich. the frosting was also delicious; it was smooth, creamy and flavorful without overpowering or being too sickly sweet. the hazelnuts added the perfect little crunch, and the design was cute tchocolate cake usually isn't my favorite, but this cake is probably one of the best vegan cakes i've ever had. scratch that, one of the best cakes i've had! vegan or not, i recommend trying a slice. read more

Two vegan friends of ours brought a Pie Pie cake to a house party this past weekend, and even though the cake itself was a little dense for my tastes, the frosting was pretty tasty (I guess sugar isn't vegan, LOL) and the sprinkles were not too crunchy, one of my sprinkles pet peeves. $35 sounds like a lot for a full pie, but then again I'm used to dropping Costco/grocery store money for my store-bought pies, so don't take my word for it. She's a "one woman show" n has a couple of assistants n has finally hired some more help due to her fast growing business. Cakes looked so good I had to travel 45 mins. (or more) in heat, rain or snow to her pop ups! She finally got a permanent kitchen to do special orders off her website. Cakes are beautiful and delicious! We've tried almost all of her items from rice crispy treats, cookies, brownies, cake jars, cupcakes, cakes and PIES! She started the business off making pies n her pie crust is AMAZING! I really, REALLY wished the cake I ordered was as amazing as it seemed on "Chicago's Best"! This was beyond a disappointment for several reasons. 1. The bakery makes it's seem your are "lucky" for them agreeing to make your cake. Look at their language on the website- it's rather insulting....... I don't care who you are.... their baking a cake that I'm paying top dollar for! You should appreciate my business and not make it seem I'm the "lucky one" for being able to pay you $66 for a subpar cake! Who do you think you are? To say that customer service is lacking is an understatement. 2. This shop that you pick up the cake from has tremendously limited hours. In my opinion, if I'm paying top dollar for a premium cake- please don't tell me I have 2 hours to pick it up over the weekend! Covid or not, give me a break. I'm tired of that excuse. People work their asses off.... you can keep your fake, high end bakery open longer . For the price you pay, it can easily be delivered and make everyone happy. Over all a BAD BUSINESS MODEL. They don't even have a published phone #! I don't think this will last. 3. The cake itself is beyond and I mean BEYOND sweet! I think they are trying to mask the vegan nightmare cake with extra sugar and it RUINS the cake. This is a primary example of over using sugar! Please use dairy and cut the sugar! Your customers will thank you! Not all dairy is bad! 4. Finally- this cake is dry. No other explanation is needed. Just a dry, sugar loaf that is overpriced. Have you ever eaten something SO delicious that you came straight to Yelp to add a business just so you could scream your elation from the rooftops? Yeah, that's me. Right here & right now. Literally just licked the last taste of frosting from my lips and here I am, speechless. And if you've read any of my other novella-length reviews, you know "speechless" isn't exactly my modus operandi. I've been wanting to try some PPMD baked goods since I started following the IG account (@piepiemydarling) & fell in LOVE with the beautiful (all vegan!) creations showcased on said account. So I pounced on a six pack of cupcakes from today's Thanksgiving pop-up because, I mean, I *had* to try them. At the time of my order, I briefly entertained ordering a 12 pack, but worried they'd go to waste. So I figured a six pack was a safe bet. And now I hate myself for not ordering *at least* a 12 pack of cupcakes and one of every pie available. Listen, I don't eat eggs (lacto-vegetarian working my way back to veganism here), so vegan desserts are my JAM. I've tried every possible vegan dessert/cupcake made available in the fair city of Chicago. Some hits, some misses. But nothing--NOTHING--holds a candle to Heather's cupcakes. My kids claimed they were the best cupcakes they've ever eaten and honestly--truly--I couldn't agree more. Pause, rewind: they are the best cupcakes I have ever eaten in 38 years of life. There were three flavors in the multipack and I kindly & generously offered up 50% of my cupcakes to be sliced into nibble-sized bites. So we all tasted, we all swooned, and I hid the other three like a squirrel hiding away nuts for winter because NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO TOUCH THOSE LAST THREE CUPCAKES. Period. The end. THEY ARE MIIIIIIINE. I'm serious, you guys. These cupcakes are the single most amazing dessert I have ever tasted. Ever. I considered myself more than a novice baker, and I consider my baked goods--vegan and not--more than merely passable. But these cupcakes were GAME CHANGERS. I'm not kidding. I'm floored. Heather, in addition to being sweet as can be (& I don't even know her personally, for the record), is the most amazing baker. She has a true gift. The cake was ready for pickup at the scheduled time and packaged nicely so that it wasn't ruined during transport. During our wedding cake cutting, we couldn't help but take a second and third bite because it was irresistibly delicious! I absolutely adore Heather; they are an amazing person who gives back to the community whenever they can. My review is strictly on the cake cups/ cakes after trying them for over three years: The frosting is ridiculously sweet -- like the type of sweet that makes you drink a glass of milk right after each and every bite. It's so sweet, it upsets my stomach after finishing just half the slice/ cup. The cake itself is amazing! The bread is moist and soft. It does have a chalky after-taste, but milk usually helps with that. I'd love if the frosting wasn't so sweet, that the frosting didn't make up more than half of the cake cups, and to see the nutritional value + ingredients for all sweets since it hasn't been included yet.
