I have to update my review since my last one because, since then, I have tried so many more items. Defloured is a gluten-free dream come true. A real blessing to the Chicago gluten-free food scene. Previously, I had only tried items stocked at Whole Foods. I've now tried SO many of their goodies directly from their bakery, local cafés, and retailers. No matter where I've purchased their goodies from, the items are always fresh. I've never purchased a stale item. It always amazes me that despite their large selection, they are able to maintain freshness of all of their items. It's hard to pick favorites, but some of my favorite items are the brownies, with the Cosmic Brownie being my number one. It's so rich and fudgy, and everyone I've had taste it has had the same wide-eyed reaction. It's amazing. The cookies are phenomenal. I love the standard chocolate chip cookies. Also, the oatmeal peanut chocolate chip cookies are seriously addictive and a favorite of mine. They're crispy on the edges with the perfect chew, have actual whole peanuts in the batter, and the perfect peanut butter flavor. The cookie sandwiches are one of my top choices and a must-try! The chocolate chip with peanut butter buttercream is amazing, as is the peanut butter s'mores. I also love everything lemon from here. The lemon mini loaves and the lemon poppy seed loaf slice are absolutely perfect. Some of the other items I've really enjoyed are the pecan blondie, magic bar, peanut butter bar, cupcakes, whoopie pie, cake pops, cinnamon crumb cake, Pucks of Love (which reminds me of MOD Pizza's No Name Cake, which I love), and the Earl Grey mini loaf. The cake slices of the week are always a great pick too. They always have fun and delicious combinations, and they always keep me wanting to pop in and try the latest one. I know there are two types of people: people who LOVE sugar and prefer a thick, sweet buttercream, and people who scrape off the frosting and only eat the cake. Their frosting is definitely for the sugar lovers out there--I personally love it! Don't snooze on Defloured. Give it a try--you won't be disappointed. read more

Ordered over the phone an the staff were super nice. They offer delivery with a fee and a minimum purchase order. Both the person I spoke to on the phone and the delivery person were very nice and kind. The baked good here were amazing. The cosmic brownie was delicious and reminded me of a fudge bar. If you are gluten free (or not), this is a must-visit bakery. The variety of baked goodies is incredible with lots of fun flavor combinations. Cookies, bars, cake pops, and more. We were most impressed by the fluffy consistency of the cake pops. The bars were rich and fun. The lemon poppy seed loaf was super lemony and again, the consistency was fantastic. As part of planning our friends' baby shower, finding a gluten free bakery was a must. Thankfully, one of them had stumbled upon Defloured when exploring Andersonville. We filled out a thorough form and reached out to their team a couple of months before the shower. Kelly emailed us back confirming our vision and what they could do for us and everything was confirmed within days. Fast forward to our delivery day, we were contacted via text with an estimated delivery time and not only were they on time, they gave us pro tips to ensure our baked goods remained fresh for our guests later that day. Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie with Peanut Butter Buttercream 4/5. This was very good desert the cookie was a little too sweet for me but the buttercream was not which I thought would be. This has been my go to bakery for several years in the city. As someone with celiacs it's always so disheartening to have bare bones desserts or ones that are so hard and crumbly that they're barely appetizing. Defloured is simply THE BEST. I don't feel that I have to sacrifice or compromise anything when ordering sweets, here, and all of my non-celiac's family and friends who I have brought desserts to have also said that it is some of the best desserts they've ever had. Recently I had a red velvet whopee which was so light and airy and delicious that I wish I had more of them. They have more savory options if you're looking for that as well and we've gotten holiday orders from them over the years that have all turned out spectacular. Heaven. Actually Nirvana. Options for gf and df pastries are few and far between, but then finding gf and df and even vegan pastries that are insanely delicious may single-handedly be the reason I need to move Chicago. I had the earl grey bundt cake at Ridman's coffee and had to visit the bakery itself (just 0.5 miles up the street). I savored every dense delectable crumb. It was a perfect earl grey flavor light and slightly herbal but very subtle and the cake intensely was moist and flecked with tea. At the bakery I got the lemon poppyseed loaf (DF and gf), a thick slice that was more similar to bread texture than cake. It was so good and the hint of icing around the edge was a perfect lemony compliment. The oatmeal cookie sandwich was too sweet for me however the texture of the cookie was cinnamony and chewy so I can see why it is a popular choice. The lemon blueberry pound cake was okay (comparatively, but it was still so good I wolfed it down so fast). I wish it had more blueberries. I would get the lemon poppyseed loaf over that. Then the vegan slutty brookie. I figured this was a good way to try more baked goods at once and WOW. So many textures and flavors that change with each bite. The brownie was exquisite with a crystallized crisp exterior with a rich chocolate flavor and chips. There was a chocolate chip cookie and Oreo woven in there with all the flavors of nostalgia and comfort all in one treat. 10/10 bakery! Great gifts for anyone with dietary restrictions and does a wonderful job providing a way for all to participate in the delicious joy of sharing a sweet treat. Thank you Defloured. Defloured is a GF bakery that offers cakes, bars, cupcakes, cookies, sandwich cookies, whoopie pies, scones, breads, cake pops, bundts, cream puffs, and event bake-at-home chicken pot pies. I tried their Raspberry Bar, and it was pretty good - there was a food ratio of the crunch and the raspberry filling. This was refrigerated, so it was a little hard - not sure if one could 'thaw' it out or warm it up a bit, which I'm sure it would have been better. I don't know if I got overcharged but I paid $39.72 for one baguette and two 4 inch pies (one apple and one pecan). To me, that is outrageous! The whole bakery is gluten-free so it's not like they have to dedicate a special space for gluten-free or need to ensure no cross-contamination. The pies were good enough. It's a bakery... the pies were bakery quality. Not amazing, but good. The baguette was not so good. I understand its gluten-free so you cannot compare it to a traditional baguette. For those that don't have gluten, you know what I mean when I say they were almost too good where you're questioning life and if you just got glutened! Glad to say that did not happen. After a year of walking past Defloured I finally decided to try out the bakery and I was highly disappointed. Anytime that I have walked past Defloured there was always a mini crowd of people so I thought that meant it was going to be good. I randomly decided since it was the holiday time I would grab a view treats to bring home and try out. I purchased a brownie and a peanut butter bar. The two items were what I would expect to cost in this area and with inflation occurring. The staff member that took my order and the other person that checked to make sure I was served were very friendly. I will say the desserts are beautifully displayed in the window. You cannot enter the shop, staff will take your order and bring out your items. I am aware that Defloured offers vegan and gluten free options but I didn't realize that means the flavor is taken out of the dessert. I am still in awe of how terrible the items I purchased were. The peanut butter bar tasted like they used peanut butter flavored protein powder. The chocolate at the bottom of the peanut butter bar was flavorless. The brownie was dry and not memorable. You normally cannot go wrong with a chocolate cake item but they beat the odds. The brownie was crumbling apart (as you can see in my photo). Unfortunately I couldn't finish the items and ended up tossing them which says a lot because I'm a sucker for sweets. Someone comes out to take your order (served with the midwestern friendliness I love). The tags are color coded by dairy free (pink) and vegan (green), and everything is gluten free! They also put a helpful list in the window to help you navigate. I bought 4 treats and wish I would have bought more. I split everything with my partner, who has no dietary restrictions. The verdict? + lemon and blueberry loaf - SO good. So fluffy. My partner couldn't believe it was gluten free. + vegan strawberry streusel bar - messy, topping crumbles off, a little dry, but still tasty + the slutty brookie - yaaasss! Like brownie batter, chocolate chip cookie, and Oreos mixed together. Couldn't stop mmmm-ing while eating. + oatmeal cream pie - nostalgic, satisfying, solid. It was a trek from our River North hotel but a worthwhile use of our zip car. It also looks easy to access by public transport and the neighborhood is cute to spend some time in. Service was perfect. My wife ended up being very happy with how the cake turned out. As I said earlier, we both loved it. I won't lie either. We ended up finishing the whole thing in 2 days. I don't regret this. My waste might but it went down so easy. I 100% recommend and I will definitely be back, probably for other delicious treats too. Updating to report the pineapple upside-down cake is fabulous! The slutty brookie remains a stable item for us it's just perfect every time as is that vegan oatmeal cream pie cookie. The challah was a bit eggy for me so idk that I'll grab that again but I will say it was nice texture wise. I'll finish the loaf for sure but just not my favorite personally. read more

I found Defloured a couple of years ago when my husband was hospitalized. He was taken great care of by his nurse. My husband, when ill, is not easy to please and can be very high strung. I know his nurse had to put up with a lot so I wanted to show my gratitude by getting her a dessert. I asked her if she liked sweets but later discovered she has a gluten allergy. Knowing this I was challenged to find a gluten free bakery. Yelp came to the rescue and led me to Defloured. It hit all the marks and it was close to home. I made the 15 minute ride to Andersonville to check out the goods and place an order. I ended up finding the perfect set of cupcakes to gift her. Unfortunately when it came time to my husband's discharge she was off but before leaving we asked his discharge nurse to give them to her when she returned. I don't have gluten allergies however I was curious to know how gluten free treats taste. Weeks later, I made a return visit to the shop to try out their goods. I've returned many times since then and I have to say what I've purchased from them so far is absolutely delicious! Their cupcakes are so good and I just love their whoopee pies. Weekend parking is a little bit of a challenge along Clark and Balmoral but it appears parking eases up during the weekdays. Thankfully I no longer need to drive out to Andersonville to get my Defloured fix in. Luckily they have a tent at the Evanston outdoor farmer's market where I make occasional visits to satisfy my sweet tooth. I recently placed a pre-order for cupcakes to pick up at the farmer's market in person and when it came time for pick up the morning of they didn't have my order ready. In fact, my order wasn't on their truck! I already pre-paid a week prior and was bummed. The lady managing the tent sensed my disappointment and she did her best to make it right by having me speak to the owner Johanna. Johanna asked when I would return home and made an effort to get one of her employees to deliver what I had ordered within the hour. It was her quick thinking and willingness to correct the situation that turned it around for me. Regardless of my experience their desserts are consistently top notch with customer service to match.
