I do not write reviews but this, this warranted a review. This was and still is insane to me.Theres literal pieces of food containing not a little bit of mold but A LOT OF IT. I am not even interested in eating the other things I purchased, selling mold to customers is incredibly reckless and honestly, since you can sell mold, I definitely don't think your food handling to avoid cross contamination is up to standard. I will not be eating anything I got cause I'm not trying to puke my guts out today or worse. Even though I'd like to be reimbursed for the bag of mold I received, I know I won't but so to repay the mold I will loudly tell whoever is reading this DO NOT GO THERE. This is my first and last time ordering a cake from this specific place. This is the very first time I've experienced this in my life. I placed an order at least a week in advance. I came in and the lady took my order very nice and everything went pretty well on this first visit. The real problem was when I came to pick up the cake now this was very stressing because I was already running kind of late to the place where I was supposed to be so I came in and waited in line and finally after 2-4 minutes waiting in line the lady took care of me, she greeted me nice and she asked me if I was coming for a pick up since I had the receipt in my hand. She took the paper and went to the back and waited in the back another 2 minutes or so. She came back and told me that my cake was at the Milwaukee location which I'm assuming that a different location they have I've never been to that location before. I asked how was that possible that they sent my order to be picked up at this location on Clark if I didn't request anything or don't even know where this place was so she asked me again to hold on while she went to the back to make another phone call. She called the lady to whom took my order and asked her why she place a note for them for me to pick up the cake to that "Milwaukee" place, but the lady to whom she was talking to said that she didn't remember because of all the orders she took over the week. Now you have to understand that if you pay in full and planing a good party you have to try to figure out asap how to handle the situation since you have a crowd of people waiting for you. This situation was so stressful and I ended up leaving without a cake since I didn't have an option. I had to go to a different place to get "cup cakes" for my guests. read more

This place is so great !! We've been ordering their 'tres leches' cake for many years and it's a total go-to celebration cake in our family. It's such a favorite I even drove it a few hours away to my daughter in college for her birthday!! (Remarkably held up, too!) This last time I goofed though and accidentally ordered the wrong cake (!) But, when I realized my mistake and called back, they graciously helped me right things (even though the wrong cake had already been begun !) Really wonderful neighborhood bakery - I love to stop by on the weekend to get some pastries while I go for a walk Delicious assortment of items from donuts to pan dulce. Recently the donuts have been amazing - so perfectly light, not greasy, and they just melt in your mouth. Love their conchas and orejas de elefante. I have also placed orders (usually for pan de muerto) over the years and things are always done on time. Very friendly staff and service which is the sugar on top of an already sweet experience. Second Update: probably the best bakery in Andersonville right now. Lost Larson is the only other sweet bakery and their products aren't that great considering the price. (Middle Eastern bakery has some sweets but they mostly bake savory things and flat breads.) Lost Larson tries really hard but I've even had croissants that are under baked there because they focus so much on trying to make things look nice or combing too many flavors etc that they fail on the basics. Update: customer service is really stupendous - if they don't have something you like in the cases just ask, if you're lucky maybe it's fresh out of the oven or fryer in back and you'll get something so fresh and delicious it will make your day. read more

I am a huge concha fan, and this place has the best conchas I have had in Chicago, perhaps anywhere. Last week, hubs got some corn bread for my amazing vegetarian chili, and it was delicious--super rich and buttery, practically like pound cake, so if you like the crumbly stuff, this is not going to be your jam. I like to stop by when I am having brunch nearby; i.e. those long waits for M.Henry's breakfast, the wait is TEDIOUS. So, I pop over here in the meanwhile for coffee and a freshly made churros($.65 cents!) or other bakery item. Actually I buy a medley of stuff for myself and the group, so we can all enjoy while waiting. Service is different every time. Sometimes they are attentive and other times, your looking around wondering who can help you. If you need help don't just wait, say something and keep talking. There is so much color everywhere, sweet smells and baked goodness drawing your attention all about. Many kinds of breads and cakes, cakes with fresh fruit, decorated "theme" cakes: like Nascar or Disney inspired ones. Its not very expensive for the baked items, i.e. breads, those with creams or cheese. You can definitely walk out of there with an assorted bag full of goodies for not very much. Let's hear it for the panaderias! Let's hear it for the rows of freshly baked breads that usually are unfamiliar to me, but look so inviting. What is that pink bread thing with the puffy top? I don't know, but it looks and smells good! What I really like about this specific panaderia was that I was able to service myself for the most part. Two rows of cabinets filled with trays of baked yummies, their delicious aroma escaping out to delight the air. Next thing you know, you'll find yourself with a metal tray in one hand and tongs in the other already having two items on your tray without even knowing how you got that way. Bread-wise, I can honestly say, I don't know what I got. Not by name, anyhow. I just grabbed what looked good and convinced my nose was worthy, and hoped for the best. My nose did not disappoint. Clever nose, it is. I DO know that I got a chocolate chip cannoli and a choco-covered strawberry. Both were just a $1.50ea. Read that again... mmmn hmmn, yep! You know places usually charge like $4 for choco-covered strawberries. Regardless of how great the chocolate is. The chocolate on these wasn't anything to rave about, but it was well worth the price. The cannoli, however --bliss. Who would've thunk??? I certainly didn't expect the enchantment I experienced when I took my first bite. And, then... $1.50! The staff is very pleasant and helpful. So last Saturday I was having some quests over for dinner, instead of slaving in the kitchen all day I made a very short trip to La Baguette Bakery. It's really not much to look at but it has been in this location for many years. They have 11 locations throughout Chicago and the burbs. Inside, there is a wall of window cased shelves filled with assorted cookies, cakes, Spanish breads and pastries. Everything looked so good, I wanted to take a bite out of each item (I swear that lady was watching me so I didn't). I will say that was expecting something a little grander but overall based on the cheap prices and the quality, I was happy. A couple Mini bolillos, some chocolate strawberries, and a raspberry filled soft pastry; I was good to go. My guests were quite pleased as well. read more

Open at 5am, in case you are wandering Edgewater/Andersonville super early on a Sunday morning (don't ask) looking for baked goods. The opening time is the only thing keeping them from two stars, because otherwise, it's definitely "Meh, I've experienced better." Despite the "La Baguette" title, this is a panaderia, so they have 76 variations of six distinct pastries just like every other Mexican bakery. I had read about their churros and that's what I really craved after eating a greasy Mexican breakfast (don't ask) but there were NO CHURROS. Damnit, I should have walked right out, but I still wanted a pastry. I got a cinnamon/raisin/pecan roll and one of those pig-shaped molasses(?) flavored cookies like they have at Morse Fruit and Meat Market. C+ and C-, respectively. I had also read favorable comments about their breads, but they had NO BREADS except for those bolillo rolls (just like every other panaderia...). I got a couple to eat with my lunch today, but I took a few nibbles for testing purposes. Thumbs down. Apparently they do fancy cakes (unlike most other panaderias) but based on the quality of everything else, caveat emptor. Nice people, though, especially for the crack of dawn on a Sunday. I am not sure why Yelp has this bakery listed as closed. This bakery was remodeled a few years back and is currently up and running pumping out some delicious and fresh cakes. In particular, I am a huge fan of the Tres Leeches, also known as pan tres leches ("three milks bread"), which is a sponge cake--in some recipes, a butter cake--soaked in three kinds of milk: evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream. I have yet to find any other bakery in Chicago that makes the Tres Leeches cake as good as these folks do. Some may find the experience of going into a Mexican style bakery where the attendant speaks very little english but being a second generation immigrant my self, I have no issues with having a little extra patience. They also serve fresh cookies, pastries, muffins and other Mexican baked goodies but Tres Leches cakes is a MUST HAVE. Oh and did I mentioned chocolate dipped strawberries. read more

ordered a pokemon cake which they have in their book with 4 Pokémon characters in their store and received only pikachu on the cake. the little figurine they used wasn't even the real pikachu you can tell it was a knock off. they make you pay upfront (most other bakeries have you pay half when you order and half when you pick up) and now I see why. I didn't pick this cake up so I didn't see it until it was time to cut the cake. the time before this I grabbed a cake from the window and as soon as we took a bite you could tell it was old ! I love this place! Aside from the annoyed look I received from the woman behind the counter when I asked for two separate bags for my six pastries, I have no complaints. Is it annoying that the pastries aren't marked? Yes. But all Mexican bakeries that I have visited have been similar. Though, I wish I was aware of the tasty delights that may never be uncovered. Though La Baguette is a chain, it's nice because this location in particular felt extremely clean and somewhat upscale. Oh, and the pastries were delicious. It's a Sunday afternoon and Sundays are usually my days to splurge calorie-wise: a big breakfast/brunch or a big dessert, etc. This Sunday, I was jonesin' for some pastries and my original intent was to go into M. Henry to see what baked goods they had. Well, I guess it was too late in the day because their selection was pretty poor. So instead, I went across the street to La Baguette. I have to admit that the name of the place confused me; it says "Baguette" but they have cakes in the window... WTF? However, inside, there are rows of pastries--I've found the right place. I must first say that there is absolutely NO indication of how things are supposed to work and there are NO signs describing what pastry/baked good is what (except for about 3 things). So unless you've been in a similar panaderia before or you grew up eating this stuff, you'll have no clue what any of the items are or how to pull out items you want to buy. Eventually, I figured out that you are supposed to grab a metal tray and a pair of tongs that are neatly lined up at the counter and use those to collect your pastries. I chose three small cookies and three large pastries: I could identify a couple of the cookies and I know one of the pastries was a cinnamon roll with raisins, but other than that, I had no idea what I was about to consume. I went up to the counter to pay and I was sure that everything was going to cost at least $8.00 (oh, and there are no prices listed, either), but I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that my collection was less than $4.00! And the woman behind the counter was very polite and nice to me; no real complaints about the service, except that no one helped me when I came in. When I got home, I decided to try half of each of the three big pastries. The cinnamon roll was awesome; a lot better than the most recent one I've had at Flourish. The sugar-cover croissant-thing was pretty good. The last thing, which was pretty plain from the outside, was interesting; it was filled with a sweet potato mixture--like a sweet potato pie that's been turned inside-out. I think I could have done without that one. This place seems great for picking up some sweets for a large group breakfast or a dinner party, since it's so cheap. I just wish I knew what was inside all the pastries beforehand so I'd be more likely to pull something that I will actually like. I'm also guessing that they do most of their business through custom cakes, which is totally cool, but I'll never be ordering one (I hate icing). I'll definitely try La Baguette in the future and possibly adjust my rating accordingly, hopefully for the better. P.S. Just had the cookies... They're really good. Not too sweet with a really delicate texture. I may buy a bunch of these the next time I throw a dinner party! read more

The baked goods looked great. I love Mexican baked goods. We almost ordered a cake here but opted for somewhere else instead. I tried the bread and the tres leches w flan. I though the latter was an inspired idea but somehow it wasn't the best tres leches or the best flan and it fell a bit flat. It was more like dos leches as there wasn't enough milk and the cake was a bit dry. The flan component was okay but should have been coco flavored for more complexity. Something was just missing...it tastes like something your mom or a aunty makes if they are not the best cook but at least it's homemade? The breads were pretty great though. If I go back I'd try the cookies but with all the bakeries around I think I'd skip it and maybe just go back for Mexican bread cause it's hard to find really good ones. read more

I worked for a Hispanic marketing agency and it was a co-worker's birthday. I didn't want to get him anything because he was a huge ass to me, but I'm a nice person... I've never been a Tres Leches. (I'm committed to chocolate cake.) To be fair, I've never had a good slice of it. I ordered an extra large cake for less than $50. (Technically I shouldn't had spent money during budget cuts but shhhhh...) The cake was so moist that I worried that it'd leak through the box. Everyone in my department loved it, even those unfortunate souls who didn't like desserts. There was not a single slice left. It was eaten so quickly that I felt like I wasted $50. Absolutely love this place and their cakes, desserts and breads. It is one of my favorite bakeries in Chicago. We had ordered a safari themed cake for our son's second birthday and it was such a hit among our guests and kids. The outside of the cake was made up of whipped cream and the inside layers were made up of chocolate vanilla marble cake with vanilla mousse filling. It was so airy, light and melt-in-the-mouth. The design of the cake was perfectly made as per the request and they made it ready for us on time. Many of our guests came to us and asked for the details of the cake and the bakery and said it was one of the best cakes they have eaten in their life. In fact quite a few people took some of the leftover cake with them, it was so amazing. Craziness I say Craziness This spot is not to far from my house, and it is wonderful! I read all the reviews, I was so surprised as I began to delve into them and realize that may of these yelpers are simply expecting too much! Or expecting a traditional bakery which this truly is anything but! Panaderia baked goods should be simple, not too sweet, and not too expensive... They have mamoth quantities of fresh treats... To compare the panaderia to a more traditional bakery is like comparing apples to oranges you just can't do it... The sweetness factor is one huge factor these baked goods are decidedly not as sweet as the treats at traditional bakeries and for me thats a plus! I love subtle homey flavors! Many of these treats find themselves in a sort of purgatory between sweet treat and yeasty bread preparation, which again makes them unique... having said that, this place rocks my world! I have been several times, I have never been disappointed! Most recently I filled up two huge boxes and a bag full of amazing baked goods for around thirty dollars, this was for a huge Super Bowl party, and to say that these sweet treats were a hit is an understatement! They were beautiful and quite tasty, slowly the room kept coming back to grab more and more, and one really special quality is size; these already decidedly cheap treats are all quite large, all large enough to share, so at a party with so many cool people the panaderia goods can become yet another social focal point! No expectations No disappointments, this is a cultural diversion from your traditional yuppie bakeries, take the diversion and you will be happy you did!
