This is a bakery I happened across while I was in the area for something else. The store is huge cases of pastries. There are signs above the cases, but I am uncultured and could not read them as they are not in my language. It's kind of unclear in my opinion that you're supposed to get a tray and tongs and then they bag it for you so I looked like a big dummy when I did wrong. The staff were talking amongst themselves and didn't really care that I was struggling. The in person experience was difficult for me, but due to my shortcomings and knowledge. The pastries were delicious although I can't tell you what any of them are. This would be a great spot for any time you needed to grab a variety of goodies to take to meet people or to work. We came here to take some pan dulce home. The interior was very spacious and clean. The staff was also very friendly and welcoming. They don't offer a lot, but everything I took home was delicious and tasted fresh. They were also missing some of my favorites. We took home some conchas, "novias", "pan de Nuez" and some other goodies that I don't know the name of, but they were all perfect. Some panederias, like to over due it with their cinnamon in the bread, but not here. Even though I'm making and know my pan, Mexicans make a lot of bread so it's impossible to know the name of all of them. It would be nice if panederias would label their damn pan. I wouldn't mind returning when in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. Wicker Park is definitely lucky to have local panederia though. read more

No frills Mexican bakery in Wicker Park! Definitely not like all the newer shops you see popping up in the area. I stopped by on a Saturday morning because it was right next door to my workout class. It is a family owned business and the decor is nothing fancy inside. You pick up a tray and tongs, and get what you want from each area. They have a variety of fresh breads, cookies, and cakes too. This was my first time in a Mexican bakery so I wasn't familiar with a lot of the offerings. It would have been nice if they had labels for each item so I knew what I was picking. I ended up picking a handful of random pastries for less than $7. Most other places at Wicker, for $7, you can can probably get 1 or maybe 2 pastries at most, so this is a great deal. My favorite was the Conchas. You can tell everything is super fresh, so if you are a fan of Mexican pastries - definitely come here! I would love to come back to try the cookies next time. read more

Kudos to the other reviewers for sharing good details. I was down the street at Pint over the weekend, getting my beer garden swagger on with a buddy. Took a breather to refresh his parking sticker and decided dessert was necessary before the next round of beers. Scoped the aisles a few times, I had no idea what to get. Pulled out the droid and started scanning reviews on Yelp. Tres leches popped up a few times and that's what I ordered. They sell singles slices in the refrigerator. I think it was less than three dollars. No churros? No one mentions churros in reviews and when I inquired, they responded "no". So I'm not sure if that means they were out or they don't offer them at all. The bakery is filled with these plastic, see through cabinets full of Easter colored baked goods. Not the most appetizing looking or it's not that, it's rather the plastic bins just look junky over time. Wear and tear has started to show. It'd be wiser if they had wooden bins with glass covers, easy to maintain and looks timeless. Don't expect typical on their toes bakery service. People come in, walk around, grab some stuff, pay minimal amount of pesos and exit. The goods are inexpensive. No one entrance or exit greets. People are doing their own things. You won't be bothered about not buying anything or just coming in to look. The Tres leches slice was perfect. Served in a plastic container on a doily. Once we took spoon fulls the sweet milk started to flow. At one point our server came out and said " so this is where you wondered off to!" She took a bite as well and agreed it was good stuff. I've been all kinds of bar hopping in this area for years and never once, paid attention to this little bakery. The stars are mostly for the slice, I would probably grab another the next time I'm spending an afternoon in Bucktown / WP. read more

Lovely Bakery! The room is filled with cabinets showcasing the pastries- protecting them from the elements and providing a glimpse into a secret world of goodies. The pastries are priced anywhere from 25¢ to $2.00 and are So Worth It! I wanted to purchase the whole store, but settled on four for now :) They have cookies and cakes of all sizes and flavors- I Loved their Carrot Cake by the (HUGE) slice the most, and will Definitely Be Back! My little sister loves to itd bread every morning. Since our cookies in containers are empty already, I decided to come to this shop since it was near our house. It is also my first time coming here. When I enter there are 2 customers inside. I can see on their glass that there are different kinds of bread. But some of it was not inviting to it. It was a brown pain. It also looks hard to eat. I ask the staff if they have soft bread and they point out the bread. It is a glazed bread and it looks sweet. I only bought a pack of it. As I went home my little sister was happy when she saw I had bread for him. She likes and enjoys eating it. read more

For the prices, it's a deal but the bread and pastries are really dry. There's a vast difference between the quality but if you want something cheap and filling and a little desserty with a dry aftertaste, come here. You can get 3 pastries at the price of one. The young lady behind the counter was too involved in a conversation with her friend, that when I asked for a some recommendations...she just said "everything is good" and went back to her conversation. I bought these to snack on as I walk around Damen and North (Wicker Park shopping district). Maybe I didn't get the right cookies, but these were a disappointment. I broke a small piece of both to try, and then threw the rest away. I like to support local businesses, but I'm not sure if I'll have the urge to give them another shot. read more

Totally walked by while trying to go to another place. As soon I saw baked goods outside the window I decided to go in. The price are unbeatable. Around 60 cents for most of the goods, accept for cupcakes and few other items. I love their cheese Danish. Soft and great. They have many selections. You get a tray and grab what you want and then go pay. It's great! The woman took care of me didn't really know how to speak English so another Spanish speaker had to translate for her. We heard good things and are huge fans of Mexican bakeries, so we stopped in around 6:45 am on a Saturday on our way out of town. Unfortunately, the taste of the pastries we tried didn't match the enticing smells and visual appeal. In fact, our experience on 2 of the items was lackluster enough that we wondered if we were eating day-old pastries (perhaps because it was so early?). We tried 3 pastries: + Vanilla concha (bun with patterned "cookie" design on top) - best of the 3, about average for a concha + Apple turnover - kinda stale and pretty gloopy filling + Orejas (Elephant ear / panniers) - not crispy at all We'll try again at a different time of day. read more

Artemio's Bakery is a gem! It's been a fixture on Milwaukee and I hope it's here to stay. Artemio's has a vast selection of pastries, cookies, cakes, flan, you name it. I don't know of a type of baked good that they don't have. They're handling quarantine regulations exceptionally. You can expect masks, clean trays, stickers on floor for social distancing, etc. They accept cash and cards - which is convenient. Artemio's goodies are so so delicious, detailed, and affordable. These are the kind of baked goods that someone spends an entire day baking, making jams, etc. It's such a treat to stop by, fill up a tray, and close out for a steal. I personally didn't like sugar cookies and Artemio's changed that. Picked a giant one up with m&ms on the last trip and it was the best decision of the week! I always stock up on something different each time, picking a handful of pastries that I've never tried and are unrecognizable to me. I really need to stop telling myself I'm just going to window shop at the bakery, just never seems to work out that way. Giving in was worth it this time though. I can't believe how cheap everything was. I was shocked when she gave me my total. Since we now live in a time where everyone thinks their cookies and croissants are worth $4. p.s. They are not! And they take credit cards. I got some croissant type stuff with pineapple, cream cheese, and cherry fillings. All really good. And the sugar cookies are good. This place is pretty nondescript inside, but it feels authentic and homemade. We shared a little flaky pineapple pastry and it was pretty delicious, and only cost $1. I saw a sign for coffee that was really cheap so definitely a good place to keep in mind for when you just need to grab a cup or coffee. The pastries aren't labeled but there are lists at the top of each case that say the names and they're prices. The woman behind the counter was nice and answered my many questions about which pastry was which since I was unfamiliar with many of them and there are a ton of different options. My wife and I decided to stop by the bakery for their butter cookies, on 7/2/17, as they remind me of the Chicago public school version, from many years ago. As my wife and I entered the shop there was no one at the counter but it did not stop us from surveying the pastries in the showcases. An hispanic female employee came from the back, to take over the front counter, we were not greeted with a hello, good afternoon, etc. (not in Spanish or English) I said hello to the young lady, with no reply. As I bought my selected pasties to the front counter for payment, the young lady began to tabulate my purchase, just as she did this, an older hispanic female customer came in and immediately, the female employee of the bakery greeted her with a verbal good afternoon and a cheerful smile. (in both Spanish and English) My wife looked at me in disgust, as this was clearly not the case for our introduction. Artemio Bakery, clearly some of your employees are culturally biased and because of this, we will no longer purchase pastries from either of your shops and will make sure to pass the word along about the encounter. read more

If Spanish is not your first language, take someone who speaks fluent Sanish with you. I had ordered a tres leches cake well before I needed it. I spoke with the person, who originally asked me to call back later that day, and I did. I carefully made my request, and ordered a cake to be picked up at 7 AM on the party day. When I arrived, I was told the cake was not ready. "It will be another 20 minutes". I returned again in the 20 minute time frame. This time, I stayed in the bakery. 15 minutes later, two people arrived, with three cake boxes. I assumed one of them was for me. The woman said you have this one, and it was decorated with blue coloring, which I said when I ordered that I did not want! I only wanted the strawberries and the peaches. Fortunately, one of the cakes had that. So, I did get my cake, it was good, not fabulous, but I will never go back.It was not worth the wait, I was very late to work, and I am still aggravated by the lack of acknowledgement of their error. read more

I haven't much been a huge fan of panaderias in the past. From my experience, they're usually pretty stark, sort of bleak and utterly charmless. I mean, yeah, you can pick up an 'a-ok' cookie or something but who wants to eat sweets whilst being sung a dirge? Not I, saith the fatty. So, I found myself on Milwaukee about to pass out with hunger. I am trying this new supermodel diet of coke and cigarettes and it's working really well, except I get irritable, stabby and, a lot of times, I pass out and wake up with some creepy old guy taking pictures of me. Is that normal? Oh yeah. Milwaukee. So's, I'm stumbling down the street with hunger pains in my belly and I look up to see the awning. "Balls, I'll eat Arby's at this point," I thought to myself. I staggered in and the decor matched my crackedoutness. We made a great pair. I was strung out. The panaderia was strung out. There were few options in the case even though it was yet still morning. The lady behind the counter gave me a side-eye. I made a note to self to regain some strength so I could come back here and give her a side-eye. At the time, I was too weak to do so. After a quick sweep of the perimeter, I decided upon this apple/nut turnover thing and some oj. Now, I don't know whether it was because I was hanging out with the Olsen Twins or what, but that turnover was about the best thing I had had in a while. It was bursting with apple & cinnamon and the nuts gave a nice texture to the pastry. And, as ravenous as I was, it took me some time to eat it. This wasn't a turnover that you could gulp down in a few bites. This was a substantial breakfast pastry. Well done, Artemio! Your environs may be a little drab and sad and your options few (at the time I was there), but what you're serving up is pretty rad. I understand, now, why there were few options. What seems like ages ago, I was groomed to be the perfect Spanish housewife. This meant Abuela spent hours with me in the kitchen and I learned the art of making empanadas, bizcocho, Tarta Santiago - essentially a whole array of baked goods, among other things. [1] Although Artemio does not specialize in sweets from Spain (the cookies and cakes are more of a Mexican/ Central American style), I sauntered in because I was craving bizcocho to go with my afternoon coffee. [2] Artemio had only the standard lemon-based variety, so I bought a slice. The bizcocho looked incredibly appetizing, but turned out to be very dry and bland. The hint of lemon was almost undetectable and the cake itself was very crumbly. (Pro tip to remedy the dryness: add a little bit of olive oil to the recipe.) I ate just enough to go with my coffee but couldn't compel myself to finish the behemoth slice. Everything is ridiculously cheap; I'm still in disbelief that I got such a huge slice of cake for under $1. [1] Whatever I lack for a dowry I can compensate for with my cooking prowess. I love the Food Network. There is nothing better than turning on that late night, steamy episode of Iron Chef or catching the mouth-watering concoctions on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives. The food network is like porn, but probably twice as addictive. That's why when I started watching a show on donuts last weekend, I had to have a donut. I'm not even sure why I needed one, but I needed one. Bad. So after reviewing all of the places that sold donuts in my head, I realized that I don't have a whole lot of options in my neighborhood (that I knew about anyways.) I racked my brain to think up a place that might have donuts (without even letting Dunkin' Donuts enter my mind) and that's when I came up with Artemio Bakery. I have walked passed their yellow sign more times than one, and always thought to myself, "I wonder what they bake?" Of course, my first thought was those huge loaves of bread from the movie Aladdin. I guess that's why I never stopped in before. I mean, I like bread but I wouldn't make a special trip to pick up a ginormous loaf of bread to snack on whilst strolling down the street. But I wanted a freakin' donut. So I figured if they did in fact sell anything sweet whatsoever besides giant loaves of bread, it had to be donuts. I mean that seems like such an obvious choice of inventory for a bakery. And boy was I right. The shop is pretty small, but there are cabinets full of tasty treats on every wall. You'll find pastries, cupcakes, brownies, cookies, breads and, of course, donuts lining the trays spread throughout the store. When I went, everything was Halloween-themed so it was perfect for the kiddies to come in and pick out a festive sugar bomb to celebrate the holidays. The best part was, everything was crazy cheap. I got two homemade donuts for $2. Booyah. The food is nothing totally extravagant, but it is a great local shop filled with great buys. They earn extra points for being friendly, keeping everything homemade and keeping it cheap. I'd be happy to stop in for a donut again soon. Thank God this place hasn't left Wicker Park. It seems to sort of stick out against all the other businesses along that stretch of MKE Ave, but good grief, I love this place. 1. It's fresh everyday. 2. There's no beating around the bush nonsense, no cutting corners. It tastes like the stuff mom or grandma used to make. 3. They have a million different kinds of everything you could think of. 4. It is (esp. in Wicker Park)...SO CHEAP. $0.75 for most single pasteries or cookies, $1 for a huge cup of coffee, $1 for a bottle of gatorade. The baked goods are made w butter and sugar, no crappy attempts to make stuff healthy in any way whatsoever. I"m pretty hungover right now or I'd have more to say. This morning my roommates and I drove all the way up to Wicker Park, just to introduce two more people to the joys of Artemio. We ran around putting apple-filled, creme-filled, disappointingly-non-filled, gingerbread, sugar-covered, pineapple, fluffy, crispy, flaky, delicious pastries on our trays. We spent 7.80 for way more pastries than we were able to eat, for 4 people. In addition, they open at 6 am. Ok, so they don't label anything. It just adds to the joy of the hunt. In addition, even if you get a sortof bland one, it was only 50cents, so you can count that a success too. Our new converts, as they covered the backseat with pastry crumbs, moaned orgasmically and made plans to return (tomorrow morning?) with $20. Our only regret? That we didn't buy more (especially of the apple-filled, walnut-and-icing-covered pastry). Artemio's is bliss. read more
