Highly recommend the Pie Boss. Great pies - all of them, you can't go wrong! I live out of town, and whenever I'm in Chicago, I make sure I swing by and get various frozen pies that I can bring back with me. Ty is always friendly and accommodating. read more

This place is SO beyond deserving of all the Yelp accolades. LA girl here visiting my family in Aurora. This place caught my eye right away. Picked up the pies and had a wonderful conversation with him too and connected on our passions for food! The food certainly didn't disappoint and in fact exceeded my expectations. The steak was tender and the pie crust was both flaky and soft. Together they made a perfect team. The pies were so comforting- like putting on a soft and warm blanket. Thank you for the care and attention you put into your food! Def a food highlight of my trip here. read more

The food is amazing and you could even take some home and make it there. The service is good for one person. And the inside is a little dirty but not that dirty. read more

This place is amazing! Found it grazing through Yelp one day as my husband was dropping off styrofoam for recycling and we go there now every time we drop that off as we are an hour away. It has yet to disappoint. Our favorites are the pepper steak and the spicy chicken! Must haves for sure! read more

We love the spicy veg. The other pies are are great. It's amazing what they do with pot pies

Really nice guy who runs this place. The food is great. The Chocolate pie is the best!

Pie Boss has a very unassuming exterior and interior, but man are those pies tasty! We found it by chance yelping restaurants near Sci-tech. There were four pies left in the hot case, and we ordered all of them. The owner recommended pre-ordering in the future. The kids loved the cheeseburger pie, and the grownup enjoyed sharing the spicy vegetable, buffalo, and southwest chicken pies. The curry spice was so good with the vegetables, and all the flavors were perfect. The pie crust was buttery, flaky perfection. We ordered four more pies from the freezer to take home! Don't miss out on these pies! read more

I had this place on my mind for quite a few days. So this Friday I reached this place 15 mins before its closing time. (Note: This place closes at 7 and is closed on Sundays.). I was welcomed by a nice aroma of freshly baked pies. Now how it works here is slightly different so read carefully You can order your favorite pie 20-30 minutes before you arrive here and they will freshly bake the pie for you. You can also choose to pick a pie from the small selection of already baked pies or take a frozen pie home and bake it yourself. Since I dint know how this worked beforehand, I only had the option of selecting something from their already baked options. I chose the peri peri chicken and chocolate custard pie. Both the pies were fresh and delicious. I was slightly disappointed by the Peri Peri pie, partially because i had the Nando's peri peri chicken in mind, which tastes very different. So don't compare it with that. Enjoy your pies!!!!!!! read more

I foolishly had ignored my sister-in-law's recommendation to try this unusually structured restaurant for at least a year. I had a beef pasty that was excellent -- the crust was, I'd have to say, perfect. There's a broad selection of savory pies. Though the restaurant is set up like a fast food/carry out joint, it's best to call your order in ahead so they'll make it fresh. The staff was very friendly to boot. read more

Pie Boss - A pasty. - South African Near Me - Aurora, Illinois

I was on my way to a garage sale when I drove past...I'd been playing on coming for a while but life gets busy. I'd fallen in love with pasties in Australia and I was *delighted* to find them here. (Guiltily, I will say I snarfed it down on the ride home because I was so excited and it was so tasty!) Being hungry and impatient is usually a problem but they had some pies baked, and warming on hand. I ordered the pepper steak and ham & cheese. My intention was to split them with my friend. She's in her 70s and has been having a hard time getting out and around. I *almost* didn't make good on my intentions because I tried a bite of each after cutting them in half! I really liked both... Having something baked with deliciousness to deliver on a rainy day gave me a smile and she was so appreciative! I'm sure I will be back...and I promise I will share ;) read more

Well that was amazing. Had a bite of flakey, buttery, greasy sausage roll. A vegetable curry pie. Ate half and put it down. Spicy and savory, not many savory pies to be found in these parts. Took a bite of each little dessert pie. The peach, cherry, and vanilla custard are fantastic but are more of a small coffee cake. Had to go back to the vegetable curry pie and finish it off. Wrapped up the sasage roll for later. Ate it for dinner. My kids tore up the mini fruit pies about 30 seconds after I dropped them on the kitchen table. I am in a happy pie haze. Today was a pie day. read more

...South African Savory Pie Shop... ... are you on your way yet? ... ... ... .... well, what are you waiting for, ya big dummy? ... ... ... Move over Pleasant House! There's a new, more affordable (and IMO, better) savory pie shop in town and in one visit they offer double the veggie variety that you've offered in the last 2 years. I walked into an empty shop during what was damn near an apocalyptic storm and was both warmly and promptly greeted by owner and Chef Tyrell. My immediate question was regarding their veggie options, of which they have two different ones each day, a Spinach and Feta and also Spicy Vegetable mix that they had already sold out of, but I couldn't resist so I purchased a take and bake frozen spicy veggie and a spinach and feta. I knew I should stop there, but I'm really into new and unique local businesses and I wanted to spread the word a bit more and support the cause. So I thought about how my mom is the most boring, eater ever and rarely strays from meat, potatoes and pasta. The most ethnic she gets when it comes to food are pierogis and maybe egg rolls and fried rice. If I told her I was bringing home South African food she'd probably make a cringe-y face and then I'd get mad at her for being so lame and non-adventurous and exactly what everyone thinks of when they talk sh*t about suburban people. But I decided to get her a pie anyway because I know she'll love it if she doesn't know it's origins and just thinks it's a pot pie... which it pretty much is. I ordered her up the chicken and mushroom and also the spicy chicken with traditional South African spices for my Dad. I can't speak for my parents as they had already eaten dinner by the time I'd gotten home so they're making it a lunch-time thing for tomorrow, but my spinach and feta pie was superb. and I have to confess that I've never been much of a pot pie fan, but this was moist and perfect and unlike the pot pies I've had in the past. Me = hooked. After being rained on today while running errands, I needed some comfort food of epic proportions and my pie did just the trick. I gobbled it up, managed to stay awake for about an hour and a half more, and that set the stage for a good cat cuddle/single girl snuggle with a big ole fleece blanket on the couch. It might not be fall yet, but in my head I'm already wearing my drawstring mens sweatpants and gettign ready to carve a out a solid groove on the sectional until spring. All my 4 savory pies came to a total of $22... affordable, savory and my new hot spot for autumn through winter eats. Insider tip: Call 35 minutes ahead with your order and they'll make your pie fresh. The ones I got were just from the warming case but they were all buttery and moist as a mutha, so I can't imagine how good a fresh one would be. Defo going to call in advance next time... or you can do an order of frozen pies... or you can go bulk (totally what I'm doing next time) and order 6 pies for $28.99. That's a meal for 6, for under $30. ... NOW, are you on your way? ... read more

I drove by this place for a few weeks. There is a really weird looking sign of a chef in the window and I just assumed it was a bakery. A friend told me that it was a South African place and the next opportunity I had I stopped in. The place used to be a BBQ place and a Middle Eastern joint, and was pretty smokey and nasty inside. Now it is all cleaned up and super bright and nice. They took some of the big counters away and really opened it up. I didn't know what to expect so I picked up a few of the ready made pies. The owner said to call ahead 35 min and they will bake them fresh next time. I had a cheeseburger pie. I had to try it and it is literally a cheeseburger baked into a pie. It was pretty good. The crust was buttery and crispy. The next pie we tried was a spicy chicken. This was pretty spicy. The taste is pretty mild and the spice creeps up and lingers. Really good. Then I got a sausage roll. It was a mild beef sausage inside of a pastry. Like a giant pig in a blanket. I love different places in the community. I think this place was pretty cool. The menu is short but I want to try the peppersteak one next. I would stop by and check it out, but don't expect apple pies. I think they need to put a flag in the window or explain what they do a lot better. read more

First off thanks to Dr. C for his review pointing me out to Pie Boss. I'm bummed that I found this place just as I'm in the process of relocating but how does that saying go...it's better to have love and lost then never to have loved at all. And yes I absolutely LOVE the pot pies that are made here. I agree with those who say....RUN...don't walk to Pie Boss immediately. Get some pie then come back and read my review...LOL. But seriously the whole process from my initial emails to Ty about the pies to picking up some frozen pot pies and a few tasty dessert pies was on point. Ty was very nice when responding to my emails and when I called to place an order, the lady who answered the phone was equally pleasant. Ty even helped me out when my good old GPS was directing me to the wrong destination. When I went inside the shop, he was very patient explaining the whole pie process to another customer and her daughter. In my mind I was like, hurry hurry, I'm late for a Yelp event, but I couldn't be mad because I was witnessing some excellent customer service. When he did get to me, he gave me that same courtesy and took the time to explain how I go about baking his pies. I ordered the Pepper Steak, Chicken & Mushroom, Spicy Chicken, and the Spinach & Feta Pies. I also ordered one each of his apple, vanilla, chocolate, and cherry pies. I've tried the Chicken & Mushroom and Spicy Chicken so far. The crust is so flaky...so tasty. It's fine whether you add the egg and milk on top or leave it out. The pot pie seems so tiny but it is packed full of goodness. I can't say enough good things about the pies and Ty. I ate all the dessert mini pies within a couple days and loved them all. I will have to put a special order for a full dessert pie. I promised to bring D the Pepper Steak pie to try but I hope I can hold out from eating it before I can get it to him. Yum to the E. P.S... I think Ty thought I was joking when I suggested he open a 2nd location in Northwest Indiana somewhere. But he does offer shipping options for his pies if I'm not inclined to drive the 80 minutes or so needed to get to Pie Boss once I move. So hope is not lost. read more

This place is an unexpected gem. Glad to know they're still in business during the covid crisis. First stumbled on them when we moved to Aurora a few years ago. They do the best sausage rolls and pasties, but their peri peri will blow you away. Their crust is the most flaky, tender thing - a bite of heaven. For busy nights, they have frozen items. Even though we moved out of the area a year ago, hubby still has to go out that way for work, so every once in a while, we can stock up. Go there. You won't be sorry. read more

First off, let me say the Pepper Steak pie is to die for!!! The only complaint I have is this place is Wayyyy overpriced. Simply put, the pies are quite a bit smaller than your standard supermarket boxed pot pie. Yet the cost is more than triple of a supermarket pot pie. $10.27 is a little out of hand. I would come here more often if I didn't feel I was being bent over. Really tired of getting "Bidened". Lol read more

This place is great! I went in there with my daughter last week. We were greeted by a friendly (family) staff who explained the menu and all of our options. I forget the gentleman's name, but he was the owner's brother? Anyway, he got us sorted out with some savory pies. We went the frozen route - taking them home to reheat in our oven. They were fantastic. We had a beef stroganoff type pie, the spicy perri chicken, and 2 desserts - apple crumble and a chocolate mousse. All were fantastic and we'll definitely be heading back. I'd recommend this to ANYONE looking for a good (non-chain restaurant) meal. The prices were very reasonable as well. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESSES! nb read more

Pie Boss - South African Near Me - Aurora, Illinois

I have been waiting a while to try this restaurant since I read about it on Yelp, and it did not disappoint. First of all, the service was wonderful and everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. There were pies of every variety pre-cooked, but I chose to order frozen pies to bake later that night. Each pie was clearly labeled and they provided baking instructions My husband and I split three pies. One would have been fine for me, but he would have preferred two. First we tried the Spicy Chicken which was fantastic. The Pepper Steak was my least favorite, but still good. I just don't like gravy that much. The big surprise of the night was the Cheeseburger pie. I was skeptical about a pie with ketchup inside, but it was our favorite of the three. There is something about the flavor of a good cheeseburger, combined with the fluffy, flaky goodness of pie crust that just can't be beat! I will definitely be returning soon! read more

Thanks for another winner, Yelp! :9 AFAIK, there's only one place around that recycles #6 styrofoam -- the Dart Container facility in North Aurora. I don't live nearby, so when we have enough styrofoam to take a trip over there, we usually like to look up somewhere that looks good for lunch. (45 minute - 1 hour drive, yo.) I...just...where do I begin? The reviews made it seem like this place was completely up my street. I'm happy enough when someone does good homemade pastries, but I'm even happier when I get to try new foods that I haven't tried before. And who doesn't love a good savory pie? Also, SAUSAGE ROLLS. :9 I knew from Yelp that you could call and order ahead of time to get exactly what you want...but how could I know what I wanted without having previously been there? Instead, I decided to just stop in after dropping off my recycling, and trust whatever they had freshly baked in their case. One of the owners and chefs, Tyrell Naidoo, greeted me warmly and told me about their pies. He also told me that they have two new pies that aren't on their menu yet: spicy steak and spicy lamb. He explained that they're both in a South African curry that's very traditional to Durban, the city in South Africa from whence these two wonderful restauranteurs came. I asked which was his favorite, and he immediately told me the spicy lamb. I took his advice and had one of those and a sausage roll (hey, I was starving). The sausage roll is light, flaky, and flavorful. Very good. But that spicy lamb pie? That, my friend, is the stuff that dreams are made of. Delicious curry dreams. So much depth. Such tender chunks of lamb that almost melt in your mouth. The chef informed me that they use only leg of lamb in their pies, because the quality of the meat is so much nicer. He also told me that they make their own pastry, but I already knew that part. Once you taste one of their pies, you'll have no idea how you survived so long without trying one. You'll also never eat a terrible frozen pot pie from the grocery store again (at least, not without weeping and wondering why you didn't just go to Pie Boss and have something a million times better instead). They also sell their pies frozen, so you can bake them at home and have one fresh anytime. I brought home a chicken and mushroom pie, a steak pie, a sausage roll, and one of each of the dessert tarts (apple crumble and milk custard) to share with my SO, since we don't get over to Aurora very often. I'll update my review once we've tried those. Oh, and the chef started telling me about how they sometimes offer bunny chow -- a Durban specialty consisting of that same delightful lamb curry that was in my pie, only served inside a homemade loaf of bread, like a bread bowl. They make their bread there, like everything else, because they weren't satisfied with anyone else's bread. If you follow them on Facebook, you can find out when they're offering bunny chow as a special. (I did ask why it's called "bunny chow," since there's no way my two bunnies would ever touch lamb. The chef said he wasn't sure; it's just always been called that. I definitely want to try it, though!) I do also want to try the veggie pies. But there are only so many pies I can fit in a day, Pie Boss. I'll be back. Oh yes, I'll be back. As I told the owners, I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing that I don't live closer. I'm going to say it's a good thing, since I'd probably eat far too many pies if I did live closer. :O They may be individually sized, but there is still such a thing as too much pie, lol. read more

Customer service goes a long way for me. Long way. I was impressed from the moment I called to place my order to when I had the order that I placed dancing around my taste buds. Super friendly service... and their pies are orgasim in your mouth delicious. Yesterday was my first time eating food from here and guess what!!! It was so good that I'm having my girlfriend pick up some more today so I can have more for dinner. So happy my gf lives about a mile from this place ....I live over 50 miles! Yaay for me. So yesterday we literally ordered almost everything on the menu. We also had some frozen so we can experience what it's like to bake at home. We got the spinach and feta as well as the samosa frozen. We baked both for dinner and they were so scrumptious ... The filling along with the buttery crust made for a heavenly marriage. No joke. We ordered the cheeseburger, mushroom and chicken pies, and the sausage roll fresh. My tummy is pleading for more as I type this. You can't go wrong with either. Trust me. Please trust me. It's such good food and for the price why wouldn't you go? It's way more of a better option than any fast food drive thru establishment. Go try it. I'm pretty sure you'll love it.. The ham & cheese pie was a big hit with the grownups and the kids. Seriously, simply perfect. The pepper beef, chicken & mushroom, and sausage roll were all delicious. Moreover, "the peach cobbler was the best!" (Direct quote from my 5-year-old, and we all agree). The pies were so filling (pun intended), and we still had leftovers. This place is no-frills, mainly carryout or call ahead. You can also buy the pies frozen and make them later. There isn't anything not to like; the prices are very reasonable. Pure bliss. You walk in and that is how you feel due to the smell of greatness. I ordered ahead and then picked up an order for the whole family. We had the spicy lamb, peppered steak, spicy chicken and chicken with mushrooms. Everyone's pie was delicious. The crust is so buttery and light. The steak was incredibly tender and the flavor of the gravy was spot on. The pepper wasn't really spicy just added flavor. We also had the sausage rolls and they were delicious. Very light and crisply. It was easy to handle like a giant egg roll. The garlic and onion add a ton of flavor to it but in no way overpower the sausage. My wife had the custard pie and claimed it was "heavenly". Service was great, everything was correct and the price is very reasonable. It is a must try place. Especially this winter, nothing is more comforting than a hot savory pie. read more

So lately I have been craving a good meat pie. After doing some searching on the interwebs I discovered this place. Let me tell you...this place is indeed a hidden gem. It looks very unassuming but it holds some delicious items. I tried their steak pie and sausage roll. Both had an incredibly flaky crust. The steak was tender and swimming in a delicious gravy. The sausage roll was basically a flaky croissant with a yummy sausage stuffing. Both were so good I managed to chomp down on them within minutes. But I took my time eating the flaky crust. The staff were very friendly and they explained everything they made was in-house. It really tasted like it was. Very fresh. Like eating homemade pie. The whole place smelled like a bakery. I decided to even take home one of their custard pies for dessert. A bit small but very yummy. Like eating rice pudding pie. My only complaint is its selection. Though varied and with different specialties made each week I would like to see some more options...like a pizza pie...or a gyro pie for example. Something a bit more extreme or experimental. Overall this place was yummy and unique. A bit out of the way for me to drive but definitely worth it. If you ever feel like eating a tummy-warming meal then come to Pie Boss. read more
