I really liked this place. Its more on the pricey side from the other bahn mis ives had but it was worth it. I got the pork belly bahn mi and it was so flavorful. The owners are super sweet as well. The food came out pretty quick and they gave us a huge slice of watermelon as well. The only down sode was that theres not many seating besides three on the inside and the two on the outside. My friend introduced me to this deli and I'll say that I wished I lived closer to Picnix Bistro so I can visit more often. It is a very small deli with some options for seating. I ordered the Chicken Banh Mi and it was delicious. The bread tasted extremely fresh and had a great crunch to it. The chicken was a bit on the drier side but the sauce helped fill that gap. I was surprised to see that it came with a watermelon slice and it was quite the refreshing pairing with the sandwich - definitely a highlight of the meal. I also had the Vietnamese coffee which was very strong and sweet but great if you are looking for a jolt of energy. For years this place was my lunch spot on most days during the work week when CPMC CAL Campus was open. Truly a Mom and Pop spot and the love they put into the food is evident. I crave it often and sometimes our department, that is now at the Davies Campus, will get a big order together and someone will pick it up. It's always a treat. Some of my earliest memories in SF were sitting in this cafe. It's truly a nostalgic place for me. Most days the Salmon plate sells out, so if you see that they have salmon available- order it! You can't go wrong with any soup or sandwich or salad and never skip the opportunity for their fried rolls! If you make this a destination for lunch, it'll be worth it. I was looking for a place to buy lunch while waiting for my dad at SF Endoscopy. Parking is very hard here. Busy streets and busy businesses. Meter parking if you don't mind paying. Residential parking is 1-2 hours. It's a really cute and simple cafe/sandwich shop. The lady asked if I want to come back or wait. I told her I'll wait. I'm not in a rush and take her time. When she was done with my sandwiches, she called out for me. She was really sweet. I order 3 sandwiches- -pork bahn mi -chicken bahn mi -tuna melt Pork bahn mi had a lot of meat, juicy, tender and a bit fatty which was perfect balance for bread condiment meat portion, just a bit salty. Love they use an Italian toasted bread. I do not like the regular French baguette bread. Chicken bahn mi was perfect! Literally perfect! Tuna melt was kind of disappointing. There wasn't much flavor. Huge chunks of meat but no flavor. My dad mixed half the tuna with his chicken sandwich and said it was much better together. I've eaten here for years and usually I love it. A few days ago however everything was off. I got my favorite, the salmon which comes with soup or salad, and rice. The salmon this time was very disappointing, very tasteless and very tough. The salad that is usually good was just sad and the rice was hard. I stopped by for takeout after a visit to the nearby medical building. Very convenient with no crowd to fight with. I ordered the pork belly bahn mi which was indeed delicious. It was a good authentic representatation of a modern bahn mi, but the star of the show was their Vietnamese chicken soup. Similar to Arroz Caldo (Filipino chicken soup) I actually enjoyed this version much more (and I am Filipino LOL). Yes, I would hella come back just for this! Sadly we will be moving into another neighborhood for our office, and I will miss having Picnix for lunch. My regular items here are the veggie egg roll salad and the chicken Vietnamese sandwich. The egg roll salad is served Wednesday through Friday. The salad contains noodles, fresh mint, cilantro, butter lettuce and fried egg rolls on top. The sandwich is served on a toasted baguette with cilantro, carrots, cucumber, daikon, mayonnaise, and chili spice. However, if you are judging it solely as a Vietnamese restaurant, it's overpriced compared to what you can get on Clement St. I tried the "egg roll salad" (egg roll bun). The egg rolls were very good. The bun was good too, with very traditional flavors. It was $11.95, which is inexpensive for a lunch in the Presidio but a lot for bun. I also tried the grilled chicken sandwich, which was very similar to chicken banh mi. It was very good, although maybe a little too heavy on the mayo. Apparently I got a huge yapping from another business owner from another review telling me that I gave all one stars to small businesses. That I was being unfair or something blah blah blah boring like that. Well..I think she needs to mind her own business to be honest in my opinion. So here is a small business that is an excellent example of what good heart and genuinely nice mean. This small business that runs by a small family. The mom and pops are always in the kitchen. Their sons help out a lot and I been coming here since 2010. A family I worked for introduced me to this place. They made so many great dishes and I adore the family and their shop. There are a few small business that have integrity and still honest in their job. They take pride in going to work over 15 hours everyday and never bitch to me once about putting in those hours. It's because it's THEIR BUSINESS! They put heart and hours in and all of their good nature and heart work will only go back to them. They never hiked up their price that high since I know them. With covid making business hard for everyone but they took it in hard time means it will pass. They don't put that kind of crap on their customers. They honestly love doing what they do and they love their customers. Now for their dishes that I love. The pork belly and rice, it comes with salad and sweet sauce that you can either dip the pork in or pour it on the rice. The salad also have this sweet awesome dressing. My other favorite is their five spice chicken over rice. Same idea as a pork but chicken. I tend to eat the same since I am a creature of habits. They used to make chop up chicken teriyaki over rice and that was my fave. I been going there when they are not making any as a special or they are out completely. So that bummed me out a bit. Another is Saigon Chicken salad. No nuts or noodles with extra dressing on the side. I usually take that home and add two boiled egg in it....yum! Their shop are in the quieter area off of all the shops on Sacramento street. Parking is tricky but you won't be disappointed or dissatisfied with their food and price. Mmmm. I just started working in the area and have already been by twice. That's saying something, because I tend to float to a few places before I decide where my go-to is. That...and Picnix is walking distance AND affordable. Which is saying a lot in the Laurel Heights area. I've mostly stuck with their Vietnamese flavors. The first time I was here, I saw that the staff behind the counter were speaking in Vietnamese (or I guess Vietnamese, based on general sounds), so my friend and I were convinced they knew what's up with the Asian flavors. We had a bun mi and the 5 spice chicken, and both were bomb. I think my friend would have had a plate full of the chicken skin. Yum. Staff here are super cool and quick. It's not a great place to go to for dining out, as they really only have about 7 tables for 2, and two of those are outside. It gets pretty tight. I'd recommend on a sunny day to walk over and get food to-go and find a park or something nearby to eat. read more

The only place in this part of town where you can get banh mi. Yes, it's Vietnamese owned. They have "bistro" sandwiches, soups and salads (e.g., Cobb salad, tuna melt, Thanksgiving inspired turkey sandwich) and a few Vietnamese items (five spice chicken rice plate, grilled chicken banh mi, Vietnamese coffee, Vietnamese egg rolls). The grilled banh mi was $6.35 (double what I'm used to paying)...so I went with the five spice chicken rice plate ($8.95) which comes with your choice of soup (they had three kinds, homemade) or salad (they had a nice variety of deli salads in the case like green beans with walnuts, pasta with veggies, tuna salad). * Five spice chicken rice plate with chao ga soup. They heated up the rice and chicken from the deli case. It reminded me of something someone's mom (who is a good cook) would make. The chicken (thigh and leg) didn't have that much five spice flavor but it was fall off the bone with any effort tender with a slightly sweet marinade that I really enjoyed. The rice had bits of cilantro throughout - different in a good way. The dipping sauce was quite salty - I think it was additional five spice sauce? I would have preferred nuoc cham for sure and some slices of cucumber. The chao ga was the Vietnamese version of chicken with rice soup - piping hot, deep flavor but slightly sour (didn't like the sourness). I wish the Vietnamese items were more authentic and that they had more than one type of banh mi. Plus the price is too high for banh mi unless they're using gourmet or organic ingredients. read more

Came here with two of my girlfriends for a quick lunch. I had the broiled Vietnamese five spice marinaded chicken over rice and it came with a side of salad and bread. The chicken was tender and flavorful throughout as you would expect with the five spice seasoning. The portion size of this dish was a little short for it's price so, you may want to add a side dish to snack on to fill your tummy. Great express spot for folks on the go. Do the restaurant choices in Laurel Village remind you of a food court? Yeah, me too. Very depressing. So imagine my delight when I spotted Picnix, a tiny cafe on Sacramento behind the hospital. I saw it, circled the block 3 times, eyed someone leaving and did a 3-point turn that would have brought my drivers' ed teacher to tears. It was textbook perfect, if I do say so myself. It was mid-afternoon, so I had missed the lunch rush. I settled in at a sunny table (you can sit inside or outside), and decided to try soup and a sandwich. There were 4 soups available today, and I chose the Tomato Cumin Curry. Really excellent, one of the best variations on tomato soup that I have had. The flavor was spicy and rich, but not heavy at all. For my sandwich, I had the Provencal, which is ham, brie, and watercress on a baguette. It was very good, and I liked the peppery crunch of the cress. I am curious to try the Daryl Hannah next time, their version of a tuna salad sammie. Vietnamese specials are offered here, so for a sampling of that I had the Vietnamese iced coffee to drink. Prices were reasonable at around $11 for all of that. I'll definitely be back again when in the neighborhood. The salads looked great and I would try a boxed lunch to take to the park if the tables are unavailable. I was looking for a little spot to grab a lunch solo and a friend recommended Picnix. - Five Spice Chicken Rice Plate. It comes with cilantro rice and a side salad with dressing of your choice. YUM! Don't worry the rice is not over powered by the cilantro. I THOUGHT I was going to have leftovers to take home but it was so good I had to stop myself from finishing the entire plate (felt a little guilty if I were to waste the to go box). - Arnold Palmer: half fresh lemonade + half ice tea. This one is a LOT sweeter than the orange version but I love how there is pulp in the juice. So refreshing. - Orange version of the Arnold Palmer: half ORANGE juice + half ice tea. Found this drink to be very unique. I may have to try making this drink at home one day. (Bought during second visit. Came by just for drinks with friends.) Great customer service: - I place my order to go but told the cashier I planning to eat part of my meal there. He told me to take a seat and brought my order out to me. - I thought I ordered the orange version of the Arnold Palmer (I asked for orange ice tea) not knowing that they had an orange tea. I work right across the street, so it's the best place for a quick bite. Not only that but it's gooood. I believe it is owned by Vietnamese, not sure if there is any Chinese in them. I don't think so. Anyways, the couple is cute and nice. The menu is written out in chalk, kind of hard to read so just go for the hard copy of the menu. Don't look at the prices on that menu though, I don't think it's up to date. The sandwich that I always get is the Grace Kelly. Moist chicken (I usually hate white meat), bacon, avacado, and parsley with mayonnaise. Great sandwich with a lot of the right flavor combo. The only thing I'm sad about is that they raised their prices. They also cater a lot to my work place. They provide a sandwich, little cup of pasta and a cup of (pickled?) veggies, and a cookie. I have no idea how much it costs to cater but it comes in a nice box and they have stickers on the outside telling you what is in the box so you don't have to guess or pick through all of them. Yesterday I just had their Vietnamese sandwich in the catered box. I've had others from other places. This sandwich was alright. The good thing about it that I do remember was the baguette that they used. Not hard. The baguette was toasted just right, the chicken tender, the carrots/radish a perfect sour-sweet mix, and it had all the familiar banh mi flavors. But I have to echo many a post here on Yelp -- it's banh mi and its $7! Ayayay! Friendly staff! My only complaint is that they need to re-do their chalk board menu -- it's hard to read. Ok, my other complaint which has nothing to do with the restaurant itself is that the hospital workers come in wearing their scrubs, hair nets, and lab coats. Either they are bringing germs in, or taking germs back to their sick patients. One doctor, when she got up to talk to her friend, even threw her lab coat on one of the tables, and then when she went to sit back down, was coughing without covering her mouth.
