Picnic is a cute restaurant where you place your food and drink order at the front counter and fetch it when ready. The decor is bright and inviting. Plus, there were plenty of tables both inside and outside of the cafe. When we arrived for breakfast around 8:30 am, it was already busy and crowded with people (sitting a bit too close for my comfort, sans masks) but the line moved along nicely and our order was ready after a short wait. The staff were friendly. But, it would have been nice to have been provided enough flatware and napkins without having to ask. We sat at a wobbly outdoor table and tried the following: - Basic Breakfast. Egg soufflé, bacon, toast, fruit jam. The egg soufflé was... weird. It lacked seasoning, the texture was firmer than expected, and didn't really have an eggy taste. Everything else was great: cripsy bacon, toast, and fruit jam. - Pork and Eggs Toast. Egg soufflé, levain bread, smoked tomato butter, pork shoulder, maple cream sauce, goat cheese, sweet drop peppers. This dish was ok with another weird egg soufflé, the pork was dry & tough, and there was a bit too much cream. I liked the bread and goat cheese though. - Bread Pudding. Croissant bread pudding, fresh berries, lemon curd, maple syrup. This was a delicious French toast dish with a great balance of tender bread, fresh berries, and tasty lemon curd. - Kouign Amann. It was flakey, sugary, tender, and awesome. - A Latte, an Americano, and a drip-coffee. The coffee drinks were fair to good. Overall, it was a bit of a hit or miss situation for us as we liked about half of what we tried. read more

This place fill up quickly so get there early! We stopped at Picnic on a cross country road trip to fuel up before a long hike. The coffees, pastries and jam were definitely the highlight of breakfast. The egg soufflé was nice, but the breakfast sandwich was a little on the heavy/greasy side. The place was cute but didn't have enough seating for the amount of traffic they had. My wife ordered the bread pudding French toast which was served with mixed berries and a lemon curd. It was flavorful and very sweet. Overall this dish was a four out of five. I tried the pork French toast. Sourdough bread, baked egg, pork, maple sauce, goat cheese and peppers, It was just okay in my opinion. I think a different bread would be nice or just toasting the sourdough would help. The egg needed salt, the pork didn't add anything to the dish. They need to have pork belly or something with some flavor, the goat cheese and peppers were very good on top though. But for the price I wouldn't order this dish again. I would rate it a two out of five. Drip coffees were good and the pastries looked very good. read more

Amazing coffee, great menu items and gluten free options at this trendy local joint. I have my coworker grab us coffee all the time and it is a great place to get a latte! I recently ate there twice and was pleased at the eccentric menu items. (I like weird stuff) Beet chips on an egg sandwich? Yes please! The Jackson hippie- made on a gluten free English muffin had a square egg white on it, leafy greens beet and sweet potatoes chips with a great sauce. Next time I'll ask for a side of that sauce or even some salsa. Salmon toast- (everyone in the restaurant had this in front of them) That tells you something! A great rendition of the nova lox. I was extremely pleased. Fresh and flavorful salmon. Had it on my gluten free English muffin of course. I'm a tomato girl so next time I'll ask for extra. Which is insisted it definitely was. They offered 2 gluten free desserts in the window a light lemon pie/cake thing and a dark chocolate walnut cookie. Got the walnut cookie with no regrets! I went back for a follow up visit to this place. I truly wish I could give it negative star rating. Our drink order taker was rude she enjoyed being rude. We ordered two 16 ounce iced coffee drinks and were charged an extra $2.25 for the ice in the drinks to make them cold. This is by far the worst surcharge we have ever seen. Offering a wide selection of bread and baked goods that are absolutely scrumptious. Their food is mostly a heal array of sandwiches and salads. A favorite of mine is the Caprese salad with salmon. This is a mixed review of likes and dislikes. First off, the place has gluten free options which is great. That's why we came here actually. Sadly, the menu mentions you cannot make changes so only one item was listed as gluten free so that made it difficult to have choices for people with allergies. Second, I ordered the burrito which I thought I would like but the goat cheese was too strong so I wasn't able to finish it. Yes, I ordered it knowing there was goat cheese, but due to no substitutions allowed, I wasn't able to remove that. Again, I'm sure they'd make exceptions but writing that on your menu just makes people feel bad if they ask for a change especially for vegans or vegetarians. Third, we were given a number for the table but the coffee was called out so I didn't know that until I went to ask because it had been too long. The staff said they called my name already, but I hadn't gotten the drink, they looked at me like it was my fault. They didn't offer to make another, this man gave me his since he took mine by accident. It just felt disorganized. The ordering line was where people were eating so you had to squeeze through. Honestly, I debated even writing this review because I hate posting a bad experience when it could just have been an off day for them, but I just wanted to warn out of town guests. read more

Lovely place for breakfast. It took me several minutes to determine what I wanted because everything looked just so delicious - and that's without seeing the food! The menu is scrumptious. Presentation can be everything, and Picnic knocks it out of the park. A) Everything looks prettier with watermelon radishes, b) artfully arranging on colored plates can go a long way, and c) if it tastes better than it looks, that's saying something. We had avocado toast, and herbed egg sandwich, and a pork and egg sandwich, and they were so pretty I barely wanted to eat it. The one minor complaint I hear/read is that it's spendy. Okay, so maybe it's about a buck or two more than it should be, but it's Jackson, and it was the height of summer. And $14/breakfast plate was about what I had expected anyway. Came here based on the reviews! This was close to my hotel and on the way for a nice walk to downtown Jackson. Was immediately struck by the amazing looking pastries in the window as I walked up to the display. You order at the counter and they give you a number, and you just seat yourself. The place was packed but I was able to find a nice seat and the window counter. Had to try one of the FAT croissants! Pillowy, incredibly fresh, and really flakey, with a ton of butter flavor! Still got a couple of extra pats and ordered a nice blackberry jam to top it off! Man! So good!! Next up I had the smoked salmon and cucumber toast. Generous portion of smoked salmon, on toasted rye with a cherry tomato and cucumber salad, capers and herbs. The flavors were light and well dressed with just the right amount of acid. It's initially a little unclear that you're supposed to order up front and then sit down, so when we found some chairs to sit at and anticipated some attention (and got none), we eventually figured it out. Staff could've come over and mentioned how it worked instead of letting us sit there, but whatever. The food is excellent! Really excellent. I got the Caprese sandwich with a side salad--the side salad was so refreshing--buttery greens with a light dressing. Yum. I loved it. My mom ordered the Smoked Salmon & Cucumber Toast which was just such a beautiful presentation and so delicious. I reserve 5 stars for groundbreaking, over-the-top incredible, but this one is a solid 4.5 (if it was possible that's how I would've rated). Beautiful, healthy meals. Can't go wrong. Very cute cafe on the outskirts of Jackson's downtown area. It's not right smack dab in the middle of everything, which means it's a coffee and breakfast spot for locals. And tourists who use Yelp :) It's definitely got the IG/Pinterest charm going on inside. Lots of photo worthy corners and the plates of food are also looking camera ready. Even better is that it tastes about as good as it looks. It's worth noting that they're open early on Sundays which was very important if you need to hit the road before 10 am.
