Still the best value and most nutritious meal you can get in Baton Rouge for an affordable price. Okay, so I'm old. When I was a teenager and young adult there were several cafeterias successfully operating in the greater New Orleans area where I lived at the time. A&G cafeteria and Piccadilly or the two primary ones that come to mind but I know there were others as well in some parts of the city. As someone who likes to eat out without spending too much money, and often dining alone, I crave a balanced meal with REAL vegetables (no in my opinion potatoes do not count as they are mostly carbs and starch)... I really enjoy a cafeteria setup where you have options and know you can always count on them having several choices of healthy vegetables not drowning in sauce or butter. If you decide to try the Piccadilly cafeteria based on this review keep in mind timing is everything. Although they are open from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 7 days a week excluding legal holidays, the best time to go for the freshest options on a steam line is around lunch time or dinner time. Like any other restaurant they want to minimize food waste, and although the types of items they serve keep fairly well on a steam line for a while... It's not as appetizing when you're viewing the line to choose your selection if the food item has been there for over an hour. Although the prices have gone up at the Piccadilly, so have prices everywhere else and the Piccadilly is still by far the best value for the money considering all that you get. I usually go to the Piccadilly cafeteria on Sherwood Forest as that is the one closest to me, but I'll occasionally stop at the one on Florida Boulevard too. Both restaurants are VERY dated in decor and could definitely use a renovation. However, the staff do a very good job keeping the facilities clean which is no easy feat when furniture and carpet are old. The wait staff are very attentive. As with most wait staff they are dependent on giving good service in order to get tips and make a living wage. I really appreciate the waitresses checking in a couple of times during the meal just in case I'd forgotten to ask for something. They do it in a friendly and non-intrusive way not two interrupt your meal but still make sure that you're not lacking for a sauce, or cup of coffee to finish your meal. It's sad to me that every time I go to the Piccadilly I almost always see people that are 50 plus years old. It's rare to see anyone in their 20s or 30s eating there. I think the younger generation could take a page from our old book and appreciate a well-balanced home cook styled meal without having to depend on all the razzle dazzle decor that newer restaurants offer for higher prices. It's not uncommon for me to go there to dine in for lunch or dinner, and because the food is filling and nutritious I often take nearly half of it home to eat the following day. That stretches my dollars even more. Yes, it's true that Piccadilly does not serve any alcohol. So I get that for some patrons seeking a place to eat, especially in the evening that's a mark against them since many younger patrons would like a beer or glass of wine or cocktail with their meal. But, a good well balanced meal for a fair price without an alcoholic a drink accompanying could be considered by the young crowd as a healthy alternative as well. read more

I used to love the food here but today it was garbage. As you can the Mac n cheese had absolutely no sauce it was plain dry elbow macaroni. I couldn't even eat it. I also got a chicken fried steak with cram gravy and although the gravy tasted good the steak itself was almost absent because it was all breading. We found this place by following the signs for food off the highway. We were hungry and cranky and had been on the road forever! So despite having a craving for fried chicken, we just wanted to find the fastest place to eat and get the rest of the trip over with! I guess we got fed up with the car at the right time because the signs off the highway listed a lot of food options. One of those places was called Piccadilly and we figured, what the hell, let's try something new. We don't have a Piccadilly where we live, or any chain like it, so we had no idea it was a cafeteria. We entered, and it still wasn't obvious- kind of upscale decor for a cafeteria. I mean, I have been to a Luby's once, about 20 years ago, and it didn't look anything like this... We finally found the line and signs and it all became clear. It seems like a good concept! I do wish they would have some helpful signage closer to the entrance though. There are a lot of places to veer off before you get to the line itself. $8.99 will get you an entree of your choice with two sides and bread. Drinks and desserts are separate. Side portions are a little small, but entree portions are large. Considering the array of options and how little time is involved in getting your meal, it's a better deal than your average lunch place. They had a variety of dishes including salmon, shrimp, meatloaf, roast beef, steak, roasted chicken and... fried chicken! There were others of course, but I was too excited about the huge, juicy pieces of fried chicken to tell you any of the others. A majority of it is comfort food, which is my jam, so I am pretty sure I would have been just as happy had I not been craving fried chicken. I ended up with two big pieces of fried chicken, a side of mac & cheese, a side of broccoli rice casserole and a dinner roll. My sweet tea was around $2 and I can't exactly recall, but the desserts seemed to range $3-4. Yeah, couldn't help myself, got some yellow cake with chocolate frosting! The place was crowded, but we found a table pretty easily and Rene was the server for our section. She was very efficient and helpful and kept us supplied with napkins. The volume was a little louder than I prefer when dining in somewhere, but it was manageable. The portions were really good for the price, I barely finished more than half of mine. The quality of everything was a little above average. My chicken was tasty and my mac was cheesy, and you have to be a little evil to not enjoy chocolate frosting. This was actually better than I expected for the price we paid and the cafeteria style setting. They did a good job of keeping everything hot without drying it out and everything tasted pretty good. I like variety, so to me the biggest appeal is that you get a big selection that is ready immediately and it doesn't affect your price. The friendly service and big portions don't hurt either. I also like that they are smart enough to separate their to go orders so it doesn't bog the line down. Towards the back of the building they have a Piccadilly Express entrance that has no seating and a smaller line of options, so you can get in and out immediately. I've been to two different cafeterias in two different cities in the last two weeks. I don't know if it's standard practice for the future but the food was not even hot in either location. First time dining here. Not impressed. Being that it was Thanksgiving day, I let alot slide. But I will def not be back. Our waitress was just rude and slow. I kept trying to get her attention as I was waiting on my turkey (which I really should've just skipped) and she was absolutely avoiding me. Meat was properly cooked a juicy. The must have brined their chicken. Only complaint is that I used to get a breast and a thigh. The set up is very user friendly as one approaches the dining area one is greeted by a person at the register. Once paid there is a bountiful variety of breakfast foods available plus an area where specialty items are prepared. Items such as omelettes, French toast, waffles, toast, fried eggs, etc. The buffet section consists of two varieties of scrambled eggs, two varieties of grits, bacon, sausage patties and link sausage, mixed fruits, cinnamon rolls, a variety of muffins, varieties of jelly, coffee and juices. This is a bargain for breakfast eaters. More than likely the best value in town. The food quality is very good, the wait staff are often checking to see if the patron needs anything, and the place is clean. Today they indicate it ends at 10:30 am ---previously it ended at 11:00 am--and at 10:30 am they promptly began to dismantle the buffet offerings but other than that change, everything else is as it was or better, the buffet price is $7.99 and includes drink. The offerings now require 2 islands as opposed to 1 island from my visits earlier in the year. Plus you still have the chefs to provide you a freshly made waffle, pancakes, or French toast and of course, eggs--sunny side up, omelette or even scrambled, The islands offer eggs, grits ( regular or cheese) , bacon, sausage, chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy, poached egg biscuit, various rolls and honey buns, fruits, and I think bread pudding. This is a lot to offer. The staff is courteous , polite and generally attentive. Will be back. read more

Not as cheap as you think it would be, especially since we went on kids eat for $1.99 night. Our family of four's bill was $27 with just two basic kids' dinners, two adults with one meat and two sides each, one extra drink, and no desserts. Not sure how the price was so high, but that seems to always be the mystery at the cash register dilemma with Picadilly. Of note, I learned a very valuable lesson. A Picadilly type "faux-buffet" I shall call it is the worst possible idea for children, such as our 6 & 3 year old girls. Everything looks delicious and so tempting, so they're begging for everything then us telling them no as they'd already made their choices led to numerous meltdowns. Overall, a very stressful series of events for both parents and the kids. The service however was great. Those in the line were informative about the price for extra items our girls were asking for, so I could easily tell them no. Our server was very attentive and polite. There was also a balloon guy that our server made sure to send to our table to distract our girls from further meltdowns. My chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy was delish, but my husband said that the roast was dry and overcooked. Their mango tea was so delicious tea that I wish I could have bought a gallon to take home. Unfortunately, we won't be returning to a "faux-buffet" type place with our young kids, but instead will choose a real deal buffet or ordering from a menu. Was very excited to come visit this restaurant as this was one of my childhood favorites growing up. Growing up the staff was nice and incredibly accommodating! Im not sure if this is still the corporate restaurant anymore but I feel like something has changed. The store was very clean but the staff seemed really off. Several people on the line were cursing openly in front of guest, my fathers food was sloppily plated on a very tiny plate and the cashier had zero urgency when ringing my families meals while continuing a conversation with another employee. The staff just didnt seem to care for the guest. The food was fine but I didnt get the warm and fuzzies that me and my family loved when I was younger and still lived in the area. Really disappointed. Maybe if I wait another 10 years they can figure out how to bring this back to the old restaurants standards of service. read more

I rarely give a 1 star rating, but this time I think that it is generous. It's been several months since this dining experience with my 12 year old daughter. We were visiting my sister in Baton Rouge, and wanted a cafeteria style meal with lots of options. My daughter was craving mac and cheese. We have a Luby's near us in Houston, and thought that this would be comparable. It was around 7:45 p.m. and the place was not busy. Walking in, we passed by the dining area. Almost every table was empty, but still covered with dirty dishes. I looked to see if they were short-staffed, but noticed at least 3 waiters just standing around. We went through the line and I noticed that the mac and cheese tray was almost completely empty so I asked if they would be putting more out. I was told it would be out shortly so we went ahead and made our orders. I got the red beans and rice, and my daughter ordered the mac and cheese (which was not ready yet) and some bread. While I paid my daughter went to find a table. I found her sitting in a booth, which was dirty and had a used glass still on it. I looked around and that had been her cleanest option!! I asked a waiter (one of the 3 standing around) to come and help us. They reluctantly came by and wiped our table. No apology or anything, even though there was not one option for a clean table in the entire restaurant! Then they went back to the side and stood around some more, still not attempting to clean any other tables. I went back to check on the mac and cheese, which was still not ready. I noticed several other people standing and waiting for mac and cheese as well. Took about 10 minutes and when I finally got it, it was disgusting and cold. My daughter would not eat it. It had something red sprinkled over the top as well, I assume was paprika, but even had it not been cold it tasted very weird. Being too frustrated, tired, and hungry, we left without talking to a manager and found another restaurant before it was too late and everything was closed. We humorously have renamed this restaurant "Puke-adilly Barfeteria" OR "Barfadilly Puketeria". Both names make us giggle and accurately describe our experience. I guess that's a plus! read more

Piccadilly is normally a good place to have a nice meal. Today we came in and ended up on the wrong side of a Very Unhappy young lady. Because of handicaps two of us were unable to carry our trays. The girl who carried our trays slid them across the table. Where she sat us was in a booth in a crowded area so we decided to move down two booths where it was less crowded. We moved to another booth and we unloaded all our food, she left and as she was walking away she said "it's ok I'll run a marathon". Now they were all on the same side, all in a row, and when you are working with the public you help the customer, you don't talk like that. She proceeded to go behind the food isle and tell the cashier what we had done "so wrong" , then the cashier decided it would be fun to lean over he counter and look at us as we are. So dear Beth when you wonder why you don't get a good tip, or Piccadilly lowers your salary or you loose your job. We usually get food from the Piccadilly Express because a lot of times it seems like its faster but other times you walk in and there's a line. Lakeisha was there the last time we went so she helped us and she was very friendly and nice. The prices have definitely gone up it's not as cheap as it used to be. I was really impressed with the crawfish etouffee though, it was delicious. It was spiced really well and they put a lot of crawfish in it so now I get it everytime. If you're super nice and if they're in a good mood they'll give you a good bit of it too. The hamburger steak, mashed potatoes & gravy, broccoli rice, mac n cheese, rolls and carrot souffle are just a couple of my favorites. The cod is also good but you need to look at it first and make sure it's fresh, if it's not fresh don't get it. (The tartar sauce is really good too.) Overall the food I've had has been good and the girls at the Piccadilly Express are usually nice.
