What to do on a lazy afternoon? Nachos & margaritas ! Ole! Saw this place & decided to stop by & try it. Wasn't disappointed. We ordered a pitcher of margarita & it was so yum! Perfect blend of Tequila & sour mix. They gave us the expected complimentary chips & salsa too. We wanted chorizo in our nachos but our server said they couldn't do it (choices were steak & chicken- but they do have chorizo on the menu...) oh well, the nachos were good- lots of toppings . We also tried the fish & chips just because and glad we did. They were awesome! 3 nice sized beer battered filets & crispy fries. We were in an outdoor seating area so I guess the reason for the paper plates? All in all a good place for lunch. Attentive service & clean restaurant. read more

My husband and I have been on a mission to try all of the restaurants in our area. Although we have lived close for over four years we never stopped here. In fact, we never travelled that far down Mountain Road before! We were pleasantly surprised with this restaurant and wish we had tried it sooner. It is a quaint Mexican/American restaurant with a very large food and drink menu. We ordered a pitcher of margarita, a cup of the corn chorizo chowder and two orders of chicken/shrimp fajitas. The portion of shrimp was huge but there really wasn't that much chicken at all. Other than that, everything was cooked perfectly and tasted great. The server was very friendly and attentive. Either this place is slipping or they were having unusually good days when we first started coming here that are now long gone. The past 2 visits have been disappointing. I stopped by after a visit to downs park. I walked in, went to the front table, and saw two people at the bar. It turned out one was a waitress and the other was a customer sitting at the bar. They were looking through pictures on his phone. I stood around for between 5 and 10 minutes before the waitress acknowledged my presence. I thought maybe the wait person was in the kitchen helping with orders. Instead she was too busy looking at photos to help me get situated. Not exactly warm and inviting, especially considering she could have went back to looking at the phone while I was deciding what to order. Our most recent visit was not up to snuff either. There were maybe 5 tables and 1 waitress. Not horrible odds, but still enough to make things hectic. Our waitress barely stopped by to check on us. Drinks went empty, chips were devoured and not replenished, and service went slow overall. The food finally arrived after almost an hour and my dish wasn't ready. The waitress asks for a reminder of what i ordered and places another order. By the time I FINALLY get my food everyone is finished. No mention of comping my entree or offering a free dessert for the inconvenience. After finishing my food we ask for boxes, pack things up and wait. And wait. And wait. Again, waitress ignoring us. After nearly 30 minutes she finally stops by and asks if we want something else. We ask for the check, which should have been cashed out a while ago. She finally brings it, we pay, and leave. For a while we were stuck in restaurant limbo, not having the check and being unable to leave. They should consider hiring an extra set of hand during rushes. With 5 tables things were overwhelmed and balls were dropped. I can't imagine what a half full room would look like. Pure chaos. read more

Eating at the Picantillo is always a wonderful experience. Whenever my husband and I visit my parents, this is one of our favorite spots to eat with them. The food is always great (my favorites being the smothered burrito and the chimichanga) and the service is always excellent. read more

I'd love to give this place a higher rating as it is my go to local restaurant (it's only 4 blocks away!)... I find most of the food to be pretty decent and clean. It's not setting the world on fire, but what the menu says, you get and its pretty tasty. My go to is the burrito bowl with chicken or steak and shrimp. I also like the chimichangas and chile rellenos (although there are definitely better chile rellenos out there). BF likes the Tacos al Pastor or Cali Burrito! Surf & Turf is surprisingly good and kind of a steal at $19. I like most of the apps I have tried here, but queso fundido and quesadillas are the best. Skip the Taquitos, they're bland and oily. I find your experience here with the staff can vary greatly--thus the three star rating. The red head, slender bartender is very hit or miss as far as personability. Sometimes she is very nice to me and other days she's a choice word that I won't write on here. If I order a House Margarita then she's plenty friendly, but god forbid I order a Margarita she has to make fresh. The House Margarita is premixed and has a concentrate sour mix that I absolutely dislike. I have had other bartenders there make fresh margs with a smile, and one bartender who had to get the manager to make a "Skinny" margarita (that's what they call a REAL margarita with fresh juice) because she did not know how... hmmm. As a former bartender, I think the could use some more talent behind the bar, but by Pasadena Standards they are better than most. The Weekend Buffet is a pretty great deal, but they have some unique breakfast menu options that shouldn't be overlooked. read more

Went here for a group dinner with a number of friends on a busy Saturday night. The restaurant was PACKED, but we were still seated promptly, since we called ahead. Our server brought out our drinks quickly and accurately, and even wrote down our orders as she took them. The queso dip appetizer came out fast as well. After what seemed like a bit of a longer wait than expected in the noisy dining room, our meals came out. Mine was not quite as ordered. I am a picky eater and can't stand guac or sour cream, but both were on my plate and touching my food, though I had requested neither, which left my burrito with a funny taste. The tortilla on the burrito was a tad mushy as well. I'd like to go back when the restaurant is not quite as busy to give them another try, especially since my friends love this place. read more

While the food is good at Picantillo, they will try to over charge you. Our server quoted us $8 dollars for happy hour Margaritas, so we indulged and ordered 6 total for four of us. They insisted on charging us $12 for each despite our servers error. Really pissed us off. Won't return anytime soon, as management is not fair to patrons. read more

It was a "it's Thursday and I don't want to cook or eat at all the normal places or go far from home" kind of night. So, we went back here after a couple year hiatus (for no good reason.) Let me start by saying the salsa was so good. Even the kid-let liked it. I got the chicken soft tacos which were delicious. I don't remember what my husband ate but mostly we were kicking ourselves that we hadn't eaten there more often. Except for the parking lot still being really tiny and Mountain Road traffic staying consistently awful, this will definitely become a go to place for Mexican. I've been going to this wonderful local family friendly restaurant for years and have always been impressed with their great food and service!!! This was our third visit and it has not improved. We went there when they were newly opened and really didn't like the food but figured they would work out The menu and come back after some time. A friend told us she ate there and liked it so we thought we would give it another try. I had a ground beef taco and cheese burrito The taco was watery ground beef and a little cheese. The waiter actually told me to order the pork tacos next time it is much better than the ground beef. I was surprised because I had not complained about the taco. The 2 of us that got Tex-mex both thought it was like canned Mexican food. The other person got a hamburger and French fries she thought it was good. That's the reason for the 2 stars. We love Picantillo! There are very few consistently good, non-franchise chain restaurants in the area but Picantillo is definitely a stand out. First, the service is incredible. Wait staff is attentive, quick, knowledgable and not afraid to make a recommendation. All great in our book! Second, the food is incredible. Tonight's chimichanga's were some of the best we've ever eaten. (One shrimp and one carnitas) The house made salsa and chips are a great start. Oh and don't miss the crab and cheese stuff jalapeños....just the right amount of heat to make them great for anyone's palate. We've tried the tacos, enchiladas and the tortillas; all tasty and perfectly cooked. Margaritas are tasty and good sized. The menu is well priced and pretty cheap compared to the high quality of food and portion size. A little shocked to read other reviews of this restaurant claiming the prices are high. Where else do you get a huge shrimp chimichanga of this quality (over 15 shrimp), chips, salsa, beans and rice for $13 at a sit down restaurant? Umm no where. For those who don't appreciate excellent Mexican food, Taco Bell is just up the street! read more

My review is simple.....I will not be back. We ordered the "Sizzling Chicken Fajitas" and they were not good. To the point we couldn't eat them. They tasted like something a 10 y/o would make. The waitress was nice and saw that the meal had barely been touched. She said that she would talk to her manager to see if she could have it removed from our check. The manager never came out, nor did our lousy dish (I could have fed it to my dog). They offered us $5 off on our next meal. We purchased a $15 meal that we could not eat and they took the liberty to throw away 3/4 of it in the trash. I rarely write a bad review but, this is a cowardly way of running a business. In short, any one that wants to take advantage of my $5 coupon have at it. I will never be back here. This is a shame when people go out of their way to support a local business. We have only dined at Picantillo on a couple of occasions but we were pleasantly surprised each time. They have a nice mix of food on the menu and their margaritas are very good. The first time we went I had the Shrimp Fajita Wrap which was really good but I really wished that it was served with fries instead of more tortilla chips. My husband had the Chimichanga which he really enjoyed. The last time we went I had the Crab Cake Sandwich and I actually liked it quite a bit. It is nice to have a restaurant like Picantillo in Pasadena because they offer something different and they have reasonable prices. read more

A long time customer who was extremely disappointed with the staff and the owner. We finished dinner and had already paid the check. Asked for 2 tortillas to take with our leftovers and were told we would need to resubmit our card. The hostess said rather rudely, "We don't give away free food!" The owner was in the background and refused to speak with me for a long time customer of several years. His response and the bartender said: "You are welcome to go elsewhere. " These are the times when we need to communicate! Sad to me. I will be bringing a bag of tortillas so that this might not happen in the future over such a small matter to anyone else. read more

What a cute little place! I'm going to go back and try more food but this is based on ambiance, service and price. We stopped in for a girls happy hour on a Monday evening. Early. The bar was starting to pick up but the restaurant wasnt' too crowded yet. We opted to sit at the bar. There is an extensive list of happy hour specials (until 6pm). $2 tacos, $5 nacho supreme, guac etc. I definitely ate my fair share of chips and salsa. The nachos were great and a good amount of food (you can get beef or chicken) for just 5 bucks! We also tried the $5 Margaritas. A little sweet for my taste but still had a good kick none the less. The bartender was attentive and nice. The $2 tacos were good, simple, but the meat tasted fresh and for happy hour you can't beat the price.
